So I understand that this meeting was planned,

Which, of course, I am not agreeing with because,

although I am 94, I am not still working.

94살이기는 하지만, 저는 '아직도' 일을 하지는 않기 때문입니다.

And anybody who asks me, "Are you still doing this or that?"

혹시 누가 저한테 "아직도 이런 일, 저런 일을 하세요?"하고 물으면, 저는 대답을 안합니다.

I don't answer because I'm not doing things still, I'm doing it like I always did.

그 이유는 저는 '아직도' 일을 하는게 아니라, 평소처럼 일을 그냥 계속하고 있기 때문입니다.

I still have -- or did I use the word still? I didn't mean that.

저는 '아직도' 할 일 이라는 글이 적힌.... 아! 방금 제가 "아직도"라는 말을 했나요?.

I have my file which is called To Do. I have my plans.

저는 "앞으로 할일" 이라는 글이 적힌 서류함이 있고, 앞으로 할 일들에 대한 계획을 가지고 있으며

I have my clients. I am doing my work like I always did.

고객도 여러 명 있으며, 평생 해온 일들을 그냥 그대로 계속하고 있습니다.

So this takes care of my age.

이제 제 나이에 대한 이야기는 그만하지요.

I want to show you my work so you know what I am doing and why I am here.

제가 지금 어떤 일을 하고, 제가 왜 이곳에 왔는지를 보여드리기 위해 제 작품들을 몇개 보여 드리겠습니다.

This was about 1925.

이 작품은 1925년경에 제가 만든것입니다.

All of these things were made during the last 75 years.

지금 보여드리는 작품들은 전부 제가 지난 75년 동안에 만든 것들입니다.

But, of course, I'm working since 25,

These were just some of the things I've made.

지금 보시는 것들은 제가 지난 75년 동안에 만든 수백개의

I made hundreds of them for the last 75 years.

작품 중에서 몇 가지 고른 것입니다.

I call myself a maker of things.

저는 저 자신을 사물을 만드는 사람이라고 부릅니다.

I don't call myself an industrial designer because I'm other things.

Industrial designers want to make novel things.

Novelty is a concept of commerce, not an aesthetic concept.

The industrial design magazine, I believe, is called "Innovation."

"이노베이션"이라는 이름의 산업디자인 잡지가 있다는 말을 들은적이 있습니다.

Innovation is not part of the aim of my work.

혁신은 제 작품이 추구하는 목표의 하나가 아닙니다.

Well, makers of things: they make things more beautiful, more elegant,

'사물'을 만드는 사람은, 기능공들이 만드는 것보다는 보다 더 아름답고, 기품있고

more comfortable than just the craftsmen do.

사용하기에 더 편리한 사물을 만드는 사람입니다.

I have so much to say. I have to think what I am going to say.

하고 싶은 말들이 너무 많아서 무슨 말을 해야 할지 생각을 좀 해야겠습니다.

Well, to describe our profession otherwise,

저희의 전문을 달리 표현을 하자면, 도예인들은

we are actually concerned with the playful search for beauty.

장난기 섞인 마음으로, 미(美)를 추구하는 사람들입니다.

That means the playful search for beauty was called the first activity of Man.

아마도, 인류의 첫 행동은 장난스런 미의 추구가 아니었을까 합니다.

Sarah Smith, who was a mathematics professor at MIT, wrote,

MIT 대학에서 수학을 가르쳤던 사라 스미스 교수는

"The playful search for beauty was Man's first activity --

"인류가 처음으로 한 활동은 장난스런 미의 추구였으며

that all useful qualities and all material qualities

인류의 모든 유용한 재능들은 바로 이러한 장난기 많은 미의 추구로부터

were developed from the playful search for beauty."

싹트기 시작했다"는 글을 쓴 적이 있습니다.

These are tiles. The word, "playful" is a necessary aspect of our work

"장난스럽다"하다는 것은 저와 같은 도예인들의 작품 생활에는

because, actually, one of our problems is that we have to make,

중요한 부분입니다. 도예인들은 평생을 걸쳐 아름다운

produce, lovely things throughout all of life, and this for me is now 75 years.

사물들을 만들어야 하는데 저는 이미 75년간 작품 생활을 해오고 있습니다. 장난스러운 요소가 없이는 제가 어떻게 그렇게 오랜동안

So how can you, without drying up,

아이디어가 고갈되지 않고

make things with the same pleasure, as a gift to others, for so long?

창작의 즐거움을 느끼며 남을 위한 선물로 사물들을 만들 수 있었겠습니까?

The playful is therefore an important part of our quality as designer.

따라서, "장난기가 많다"라는 개념은 디자이너들이 가져야 하는 중요한 자질 중의 하나입니다.

Let me tell you some about my life.

이제, 저의 일생에 대해 몇 마디 해드리겠습니다.

As I said, I started to do these things 75 years ago.

앞에서 말씀드린 바와 같이 저는 75년 전에 도예를 시작했습니다..

My first exhibition in the United States

제가 미국에서 처음으로 제 작품을 전시했던 것은

was at the Sesquicentennial exhibition in 1926 --

1926년에 열렸던 미국 독립 기념 150년제 전시회에서 였습니다.

that the Hungarian government sent one of my hand-drawn pieces as part of the exhibit.

그 당시의 헝가리 정부가 헝가리 전시품의 일부로 제가 손으로 빗어서 만든 작품 하나를 그 전시회로 보냈었지요.

My work actually took me through many countries,

저는 제 작품을 통해 많은 나라를 방문해서

and showed me a great part of the world.

세계의 여러 흥미있는 곳들을 볼 수 있는 기회를 주었습니다.

This is not that they took me -- the work didn't take me --

그러나, 제 작품들이 우연히 저를 세계 각국으로 데려간 것은 아닙니다.

I made the things particularly because I wanted to use them to see the world.

저는 세계를 보기 위해서 특별히 작품을 만들었습니다.

I was incredibly curious to see the world, and I made all these things,

저는 세상에 대한 호기심이 무척 강했으며, 그리고 이러한 작품들을 만들었는데,

which then finally did take me to see many countries and many cultures.

결국에는 제 작품들이 제가 여러 나라를 방문하고 그들의 문화를 접할 수 있는 기회를 저한테 준 것입니다.

I started as an apprentice to a Hungarian craftsman,

저는 헝가리인 공예가 밑에서 견습공으로 도예를 시작했습니다.

and this taught me what the guild system was in Middle Ages.

저는 그분 밑에서 일하며 중세시대의 길드 시스템을 접하게 되었습니다.

The guild system: that means when I was an apprentice,

중세의 길드 시스템에 의하면 마스터 도예가가 되려면 반드시 견습공 과정을 걸쳐야 하기 때문에

I had to apprentice myself in order to become a pottery master.

저는 마스터 도예가가 되기 위해 견습공으로 일을 시작을 했습니다.

In my shop where I studied, or learned, there was a traditional hierarchy

그곳에는 마스터, 직공, 숙련공, 견습공과 같은

of master, journeyman and learned worker, and apprentice,

전통적인 직위 서열이 있었는데

and I worked as the apprentice.

저는 견습공으로 일을 시작했습니다.

The work as an apprentice was very primitive.

그 당시에는 견습공으로 일 한다는 것이 쉬운 일이 아니었습니다.

That means I had to actually learn every aspect of making pottery by hand.

저는 도자기를 만드는데 관련되는 모든 것들을 직접 경험을 통해 배워야 했습니다.

We mashed the clay with our feet when it came from the hillside.

저희들은 산기슭에서 소지를 캐와서 그것을 발로 짓이겨야 했습니다.

After that, it had to be kneaded. It had to then go in, kind of, a mangle.

흙밟기 작업이 끝나면, 잘 다져진 흙덩어리를 틀에 넣고 떡가래 처럼 뽑아서

And then finally it was prepared for the throwing.

물레 위에서 도자기를 빗을 수 있게 준비하는 일도 했습니다.

And there I really worked as an apprentice.

저는 견습공들이 하는 일들은 전부 다 했습니다.

My master took me to set ovens

저는 제 마스터가 시키는 대로 가마안에 도자기를 쌓고

because this was part of oven-making, oven-setting, in the time.

불을 지피는 일도 했습니다.

And finally, I had received a document

드디어 저는 견습공 과정을 성공적으로 수료했을 뿐만아니라

that I had accomplished my apprenticeship successfully,

견습공 과정 중 도덕적인 생활도 했다는것도 증명해 주는

that I had behaved morally, and this document was given to me

증명서를 받았는데 그 증명서는 제가 속하던 길드(동업자 조합)에서

by the Guild of Roof-Coverers, Rail-Diggers, Oven-Setters,

기와쟁이, 철로굴착 기술공, 가마 준비공,

Chimney Sweeps and Potters.

굴뚝 청소부, 그리고 도공들에게 주는 것이었습니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I also got at the time a workbook which explained my rights

저는 그때 도공으로서의 저의 권리 및 작업조건이 기재된

and my working conditions, and I still have that workbook.

규정집도 받았는데 지금도 그것을 가지고 있습니다.

First I set up a shop in my own garden,

저는 우선 우리집의 뒷마당에 도자기 작업장을 짓고, 그 곳에서

and made pottery which I sold on the marketplace in Budapest.

만든 도자기들을 부다페스트에 있는 시장에서 팔았습니다.

And there I was sitting, and my then-boyfriend --

저는 그 당시 제 남자친구와 같이 시장 바닥에 앉아서...

I didn't mean it was a boyfriend like it is meant today --

아 - 그런데 그 친구는 요즘 말하는 의미의 남자친구가 아니었습니다.

but my boyfriend and I sat at the market and sold the pots.

하여튼, 저는 그 남자친구와 같이 시장에 앉아서 제가 만든 물건들을 팔았는데

My mother thought that this was not very proper,

제 어머님은 그것이 적절한 행위이 아니라고 생각하시고

so she sat with us to add propriety to this activity.

저의 예의범절을 지켜주기 위해 저희들 옆에 같이 앉아 주셨습니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

However, after a while there was a new factory being built in Budapest,

하여튼, 제가 시장에서 일하기 시작한 얼마후, 부다페스트에서

a pottery factory, a large one.

큰 도자기 공장을 하나 새로 짓고 있었습니다.

And I visited it with several ladies, and asked all sorts of questions of the director.

그래서 저는 여자 몇 명과 함께 그곳을 찾아가 구경 한 후, 그 공장의 공장장에게 여러가지 질문을 했었지요.

Then the director asked me, why do you ask all these questions?

그랬더니 그 공장장이 왜 그렇게 질문을 많이 하냐고 저한테 물었습니다.

I said, I also have a pottery.

그래서 저도 도자기를 만든다고 대답을 했지요.

So he asked me, could he please visit me, and then finally he did,

그랬더니 그 공장장이 언제 한번 제 작업장을 볼 수 있냐고 물어봤어요.

and explained to me that what I did now in my shop was an anachronism,

그 얼마 후에 그 사람이 정말로 제 작업장을 찾아왔었는데 쭉 한번 둘러 보고는

that the industrial revolution had broken out,

제 작업 방식이 너무 구식이고 도자기 산업혁명도 이미 터졌으니

and that I rather should join the factory.

자기 공장에 와서 일하는게 어떻겠냐고 했어요.

There he made an art department for me where I worked for several months.

그 이사는 저를 위해 그 공장에 아트 부서를 새로 만들었고 저는 그곳에서 여러달 일을 했었지요.

However, everybody in the factory spent his time at the art department.

그런데, 그 공장에서 일했던 많은 사람들이 아트 부서에서 시간을 보냈습니다.

The director there said there were several women casting

그 공장장은 여러 여자 도공들이 제 디자인으로 만든 주형을 사용해서

and producing my designs now in molds, and this was sold also to America.

도자기를 만들어서, 그것들을 미국으로 팔고 있다고 말했어요.

I remember that it was quite successful.

그때 제 작품들이 꽤 성공적이었던 것으로 저는 기억합니다.

However, the director, the chemist, model maker -- everybody --

하여튼, 그 공장의 디렉터, 화학자, 모델 메이커 등 모든 사람이 변기를 만드는

concerned himself much more with the art department --

자신들의 일 보다는 데가 있는 아트 부서의 일에 관심을 더 보였습니다.

that means, with my work -- than making toilets,

하여튼, 저희들은 그 당시 저희 공장을 소유헸던 은행으로부터

so finally they got a letter from the center, from the bank who owned the factory,

제 아트 부서 뒷부분에서 변기를 제조하라는 지시를 밨았고

saying, make toilet-setting behind the art department, and that was my end.

그래서 저는 그 공장을 그만둬야 했습니다.

So this gave me the possibility because now I was a journeyman,

저는 그때 그 공장에서 직공으로 일하고 있었기 때문에 저도 다른 직공처럼

and journeymen also take their satchel and go to see the world.

배낭을 둘러메고 세계 여행을 할 수 있었습니다.

So as a journeyman, I put an ad into the paper that I had studied,

그래서 저는 연수 과정을 완료한

that I was a down-to-earth potter's journeyman

진솔하고 현실적인 직공으로서

and I was looking for a job as a journeyman.

직공의 자리를 구하고 있다는 내용의 구직광고를 냈었는데

And I got several answers, and I accepted the one

그 결과 여러곳으로 부터 고용제안을 받았지요.

which was farthest from home and practically, I thought, halfway to America.

그래서 저는 우리집에서 제일 먼 곳이었고, 그 당시엔 미국으로 가는 거리의 절반 정도는 된다고

And that was in Hamburg.

제가 생각했던 곳을 택했는데 그곳이 바로 독일의 햄버그였습니다.

Then I first took this job in Hamburg, at an art pottery

제가 선택했던 햄버그에 있는 도예원은 예술 도예품을 만드는 곳이 었는데

where everything was done on the wheel,

그곳에서는 모든 도예품을 물레를 사용해서 만들었습니다.

and so I worked in a shop where there were several potters.

저는 여러 도공들이 함께 모여서 일하는 작업장에서 일했습니다.

And the first day, I was coming to take my place at the turntable --

그곳에는 도자기를 빚는 물레가 서너개 있었는데 제가 일하는 물레 뒤에

there were three or four turntables -- and one of them, behind where I was sitting,

곱사등의 귀머거리겸 벙어리 아저씨가 한분 일하고 있었는데

was a hunchback, a deaf-mute hunchback, who smelled very bad.

그 아저씨의 몸에서 심한 악취가 나서 첫날 고생을 좀 했었지요.

So I doused him in cologne every day, which he thought was very nice,

그래서 저는 그 다음날 부터 그 아저씨한테 매일 콜론 향수를 뿌려드렸더니

and therefore he brought bread and butter every day,

그 아저씨는 좋아하시며 고맙다는 뜻으로 매일 저에게 빵과 버터를 주셨는데

which I had to eat out of courtesy.

저는 예의상 그걸 매일 먹어야 했어요.

The first day I came to work in this shop

하여튼, 제가 그곳에 일하기 시작한 첫날, 제 일하는 물레 앞에 가서 앉고 보니까

there was on my wheel a surprise for me.

물레 회전판 위에 놀라운 선물들이 있었어요.

My colleagues had thoughtfully put on the wheel where I was supposed to work

그것은 저의 동료들이 정성껏 만든

a very nicely modeled natural man's organs.

매우 자연스럽게 보이는 남자 생식기 조각들이었습니다.

(Laughter)

After I brushed them off with a hand motion, they were very --

저는 그래서 그것을 치워달라고 손으로 제스쳐를 했는데 그 후에는 다들 저한테

I finally was now accepted, and worked there for some six months.

잘해 줬으며, 저는 그곳에서 6개월간 일을 했습니다.

This was my first job.

이것이 저의 첫 직장이었습니다.

If I go on like this, you will be here till midnight.

제가 이런식으로 이야기를 하면 밤새도록 이야기를 해야 될 것 같습니다.

I have to tell you that within five minutes I will talk very fast.

5분 동안 빨리 말을 하겠어요.

And actually, my work took me to many countries

제 일을 통해서 많은 나라를 갈 수 있었는데 사실, 많은 나라를

because I used my work to fill my curiosity.

가보고 싶은 호기심을 만족시키기 위한 수단으로 일을 했습니다.

And among other things, other countries I worked, was in the Soviet Union,

저는 제 일생을 통해 많은 나라를 돌아다니며 일을 했는데 1932년 부터

where I worked from '32 to '37 -- actually, to '36.

1937년까지...아, 사실은 36년까지 소련에 있었습니다.

I was finally there, although I had nothing to do -- I was a foreign expert.

저는 드디어 소련으로 가기는 했지만 저는 외국인 전문가였기 때문에 별로 하는 일이 없었습니다.

I became art director of the china and glass industry,

저는 도자기와 유리 업계에서 아트 디렉터로 일하고 있었습니다.

and eventually under Stalin's purges -- at the beginning of Stalin's purges,

그때는 스탈린의 대숙청이 시작될 때 였습니다.

I didn't know that hundreds of thousands of innocent people were arrested.

저는 그 당시 수십만명의 죄없는 사람들이 구속된 사실을 모르고 있었습니다.

So I was arrested quite early in Stalin's purges,

저는 스탈린이 대숙청을 시작한 초기에 구속돼서

and spent 16 months in a Russian prison.

소련에서 16개월 동안 감옥생활을 했습니다.

The accusation was that I had successfully prepared an Attentat on Stalin's life.

저는 스탈린의 생명을 위롭게 하는 준비를 하고 있었다는 죄명으로 구속되었었는데

This was a very dangerous accusation.

그것은 매우 중대한 죄명이었습니다.

And if this is the end of my five minutes, I want to tell you that

이제 마지막 5분이 다 갔으면, 저는 놀랍게도 그때 죽지 않았다는

I actually did survive, which was a surprise.

말을 여러분께 해드리고 싶습니다.

But since I survived and I'm here,

Moderator: Tell me when your last trip to Russia was.

사회자: 제일 마직막에 간 러시아 행 여행 이야기를 해 주시겠습니까?

Weren't you there recently?

최근에 러시아에 가지 않으셨나요?

EZ: Oh, this summer, in fact,

에바 지젤: 아, 맞아요. 금년 여름에 갔다 왔지요.

the Lomonosov factory was bought by an American company, invited me.

제가 소련에서 일했던 로모노소브 공장을 미국회사가 샀는데

They found out that I had worked in '33 at this factory,

1933년에 제가 그 공장에서 일했다는 사실을 발견하고

and they came to my studio in Rockland County,

록랜드 카운티에 있는 제 스튜디오로로 저를 찾아왔는데

and brought the 15 of their artists to visit me here.

그 회사에서 일하는 15명의 예술가들도 같이 데리고 왔었지요.

And they invited myself to come to the Russian factory last summer,

그랬는데 지난 여름 7월에 저는, 제가 옛날에 일했던 그 러시아 공장으로

in July, to make some dishes, design some dishes.

와서 도자기 접시들을 몇개 디자인해 달라는 초대를 받았습니다.

And since I don't like to travel alone, they also invited my daughter,

그런데 제가 혼자 여행하는 것을 싫어하는 것을 알고

son-in-law and granddaughter,

제 딸, 사위 그리고 손녀도 함께 초대를 했습니다.

so we had a lovely trip to see Russia today,

덕분에 우리 식구는 러시아에서 아주 즐거운 여행을 했지만

which is not a very pleasant and happy view.

오늘의 러시아는 그렇게 즐겁고 행복한 곳이 아니라고 생각합니다.
