Five years ago,

to talk about the relationships between humans and machines.

Today, I'm here to talk only about the relationships between humans.

오늘은 인간들 사이의 관계에 대해서 말하려고 합니다.

I regularly say

인공 지능에 대한 강연에서 자주 말했듯이

in my lectures on artificial intelligence

that humans will always have a monopoly on evil.

오직 악한 것은 언제나 인간이 될 것입니다.

It's not a threat,

이건 위협이 아니라

just a reminder that people choose.

인간들이 선택한다는 걸 상기시켜 주는 겁니다.

We are not algorithms.

우리는 알고리즘이 아니라서

We are not bound by code or commandments or laws or treaties.

규칙이나 명령, 법칙 또는 조약에 묶여 있지 않습니다.

We have them.

그런 게 있기는 하지만

But we choose.

선택할 수 있다는 거예요.

So let us talk now about the choices we make.

그러니 우리가 하는 이러한 선택에 대해 한번 말해보죠.

About things in black and white.

흑백 논리로 설명되는 것에 관련된 것으로써

About Russia's war on Ukraine.

우크라이나를 침공한 러시아의 전쟁에 대해서요.

And about good and evil.

그리고 선과 악에 대해서도 논해보죠.

My life experience prepared me to identify evil at an early age.

저는 살면서 겪은 일들을 통해서

이른 나이에도 악을 구별할 수 있었는데요.

Not my life as the chess player.

체스 선수로서의 삶 덕분은 아니었습니다.

Not even as the youngest world champion in history.

역사상 최연소 세계 챔피언이 됐기 때문도 아니었죠.

No.

아닙니다.

My relevant experience is where I was born and raised,

오히려 제가 나고 자란 곳과 관련이 있는데요.

in what Ronald Reagan accurately called the “evil empire,”

로널드 레이건 대통령이 꼭 집어서 ‘악의 제국’이라 불렀던 곳인

the USSR.

소비에트 연방 때문이었죠.

As a young star in the chess-crazed Soviet Union in the ’70s and ’80s,

70-80년대 당시 불었던 체스 열풍 속 소련의 젊은 스타였던

I had many privileges my compatriots did not.

저는 동포들이 갖지 못했던 많은 특권을 누렸습니다.

I could travel to the West outside of the Iron Curtain,

철의 장막 너머 서방 국가로 여행할 수 있었으니까요.

where it was obvious to me very quickly

그리고 얼마 지나지 않아 깨닫게 된 것이 있었는데

that they were the free world and we were not,

자유세계는 서방 국가라는 거였죠.

despite what communist propaganda told us.

공산주의 선전과 상관없이요.

I eventually got into trouble for sharing these views.

이런 견해를 함께 나누다가 결국 문제에 휘말리게 됐습니다.

What late American civil rights hero and Congressman John Lewis

고인이 된 미국 시민권 운동의 영웅이자 하원 의원인 존 루이스가

would have called “good trouble.”

‘좋은 문제’라고 했던 것인데요.

My criticism of the Soviet system

소련 체제에 대한 제 비판과

and my praise for America was bad enough.

미국에 대한 찬사로 충분히 안 좋은 상황이었는데

But it was even worse because where it was published.

이걸 게재한 매체 때문에 더 안 좋아졌죠.

My comments were almost as [much of] a scandal

제 의견은 거의 엄청난 스캔들에 가까운 것으로

as Soviet movie star Natalya Negoda’s nude photos in “Playboy” in the same year.

같은 해 잡지에 실린 소련 영화 스타 나탈리아 네고다의

누드 사진 만큼이었죠.

I felt I had to speak out

저는 제 명성을 이용해 공개적으로 말할 필요를 느끼게 되면서

to use my fame to push the envelope of free speech

무너지는 고르바초프의 제국 내부의 언론 자유의 한계를 초월하려고 했죠.

in Gorbachev's collapsing empire.

The next year, in October 1990,

그래서 이듬해, 1990년 10월에

in my world championship match against Anatoly Karpov in New York City,

뉴욕에서 열린 아나톨리 카르포프와의 세계 선수권 대회 경기에서

I refused to play under Soviet hammer and sickle

저는 소련의 낫과 망치 아래서 하는 경기를 거부하는 대신

and demanded to play under Russian flag.

러시아 국기 아래서의 경기를 요구했습니다.

The USSR staggered on for another year

그 후, 소련은 1년 동안이나 비틀거리다가

until it disintegrated on Christmas Day, 1991.

Oh, what a great moment in world history.

How we celebrated,

the evil empire had fallen, the future looked bright.

악의 제국은 무너졌고 미래는 아주 밝았습니다.

And yet, eight years later, on December 31, 1999,

그럼에도 불구하고 8년 후, 1999년 12월 31일에

a former lieutenant colonel of the KGB became the president of Russia.

전직 KGB 중령이 러시아의 대통령이 됐는데

His name was Vladimir Putin.

그 이름은 블라디미르 푸틴이었죠.

How this happened

왜 이렇게 됐는지는 길고 고통스러운 얘기입니다.

is a long, painful story.

And in fact, I wrote a book about it in 2015 called "Winter is Coming."

저는 이에 대해서 2015년에 '겨울이 오고 있다'라는 책을 썼어요.

Not an original title, I have to admit.

독창적인 제목 같진 않네요.

(Laughter)

But I'm a fan of "Game of Thrones."

하지만 제가 ‘왕좌의 게임’ 시리즈의 팬이라 그렇습니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And also I felt it was appropriate because it was a warning.

또한 경고를 담고 있는 책이라서 적합한 제목이라 생각했고

The subtitle was more important:

부제가 더 중요했습니다.

"Why Vladimir Putin and the Enemies of the Free World Must Be Stopped."

‘왜 블라디미르 푸틴과 자유세계의 적들을 막아야만 하는가?’였는데

The publisher, by the way, didn't like it.

출판사는 별로 좋아하지 않았죠.

"Enemies."

‘적이라고요? 표현이 너무 과격해요 냉전처럼 들리잖아요’라고 했을 때

It's too harsh.

Sounded like Cold War.

"Absolutely," I said.

‘바로 그거예요’

"Cold War because winter is coming."

‘겨울이 오고 있으니까 냉전이죠’라고 답했죠.

(Laughter)

Well, here we are, 17 years later.

돌이켜보면 7년이나 지난 일이군요.

And if I wrote a sequel,

속편을 쓰게 된다면

it would be called “Winter Is Here.”

‘겨울이 왔다’가 될 겁니다.

And the subtitle would be "I Bleeping Told You So."

그리고 부제는 ‘내가 경고했잖아’가 될 거고요.

(Laughter)

Actually, my first article of warning

사실 제가 처음 경고했던 글은

was published in “The Wall Street Journal”

2001년 1월 4일 '월스트리트 저널'에 실렸습니다.

on January 4, 2001.

I saw evil because I heard evil.

저는 악한 것을 봤는데 악한 것을 들었기 때문에 가능했죠.

Putin was telling us what he was.

푸틴은 자신이 어떤 사람이었는지 말하고 있었고

All we had to do was listen.

듣고 있을 수밖에 없었어요.

When Putin said that there was no such thing as a former KGB agent,

푸틴이 전직 KGB 요원 같은 건 없다고 했을 때

I knew Russia's fragile democracy was in danger.

러시아의 취약한 민주주의가 위태로워진 걸 직감했죠.

When Putin said that the collapse of the Soviet Union

그리고 푸틴이 소비에트 연방의 붕괴를 두고

was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century,

20세기 최대의 지정학적 재앙이라고 했을 때

I knew Russia’s newly independent neighbors were at risk.

러시아 주변의 새로운 독립국들이 위험에 처했다는 걸 깨달았습니다.

And when Putin talked at the Munich Security Conference in 2007

그리고 푸틴이 2007년 뮌헨 안보회의에서

about a return to spheres of influence,

러시아의 세력권으로 돌아가는 것에 대해 얘기했을 때는

I knew he was ready to launch his plan.

자신의 계획을 실행할 준비가 됐다는 걸 알 수 있었습니다.

It was the language from the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, 1939.

1939년 독일-소련 불가침 조약에서 찾아볼 수 있는 말이었으며

The language Hitler and Stalin used to divide Europe.

히틀러와 스탈린이 유럽을 갈라놓으려고 했던 말이었으니까요.

And a year later, in 2008,

그리고 1년 후 2008년에 푸틴은 조지아 공화국을 침공했으며

Putin invaded the Republic of Georgia.

2014, Ukraine.

2014년에는 우크라이나를 침공했죠.

It's a paradox, isn't it?

역설적이지 않나요?

Dictators lie about everything they have done,

독재자들은 그들이 저지른 모든 일에 대해 거짓말을 하지만

but often they tell us exactly what they're going to do.

자신들이 저지르려는 일을 종종 정확하게 말해주기도 하거든요.

Just listen.

그냥 들어보세요.

Anyone who is surprised at Putin's war crimes in Ukraine

우크라이나에 대한 푸틴의 전쟁 범죄에 놀란 사람이 있다면

must not be aware about his long record,

푸틴의 오랜 전과에 대해 모르는 사람일 겁니다.

beginning with the Second Chechen War in Grozny more than two decades ago.

20년보다도 훨씬 더 전에 제2차 체첸 전쟁 당시

그로즈니부터 시작됐거든요.

Vladimir Putin has been a war criminal from the start.

블라디미르 푸틴은 처음부터 전범이었습니다.

So in 2005, still being ranked number one,

제가 세계 1위 자리를 여전히 유지했던 2005년에

I retired from professional chess

프로 체스계에서 은퇴했는데

to form a pro-democracy, anti-Putin movement in Russia.

러시아에서 민주화 및 반 푸틴 운동을 시작하기 위해서였죠.

As you could see, it didn't go so well.

보시다시피 그리 잘 진행되진 않았습니다.

(웃음)

But it was not about winning or losing.

하지만 그건 이기고 지는 문제가 아니었습니다.

I knew it was my moral duty

제 도덕적 의무였으며

in keeping with the slogan of Soviet dissidents:

소비에트 반체제 인사들이 외치던 이 구호를 계속 따르는 것이었죠.

"Do what you must and so be it."

‘해야 할 일을 하라 그렇게 될 것이다.’

Ah, my friends and critics both kept telling me,

그러나 제 친구들과 비평가들은 이 말을 계속했어요.

"Gary, you are a chess player, you're not a politician.

‘가리, 당신은 체스 선수지 정치인이 아니야’

This is not chess.

‘이건 체스가 아니야’

You see everything in black and white.

‘모든 걸 너무 흑백으로 보고 있잖아’

Politics are gray.

‘정치는 회색 지대라서 타협할 수밖에 없어’라고 했죠.

You have to compromise."

Really?

그런가요?

Those who peacefully marched with me for free Russia

자유로운 러시아를 위해 함께 평화롭게 행진했던 사람들은

are either in exile, like me.

저처럼 망명 중이거나

Or in jail, like Alexei Navalny.

알렉세이 나발니처럼 감옥에 있거나

Or even murdered like Boris Nemtsov.

보리스 넴초프처럼 암살되기까지 했습니다.

Compromise?

타협이요?

Not black and white?

흑백이 아니라고요?

Are you sure?

확실해요?

Compromise with this?

이런 일과 타협하라고요?

You cannot look at the images from Ukraine in recent weeks

우크라이나의 최근 몇 주간 사진들을 보고도

and say there is no pure evil.

완전한 악이 없다고 말할 수는 없습니다.

Mariupol destroyed, Bucha slaughtered,

파괴된 마리우폴과 부차에서의 학살 그리고

Kramatorsk train station massacred.

크라마토르스크 기차역 대학살까지

And worse is yet to come.

점점 더 악화될 일만 남았죠.

And these horrors are not from Poland in 1945.

이런 끔찍한 일들은 1945년 폴란드에서 일어난 게 아닙니다.

Not from Rwanda in 1994.

1994년 르완다도 아니에요.

Not Aleppo 2016.

2016년의 알레포도 아니고

This is Europe this week.

바로 이번 주, 유럽에서 벌어진 일입니다.

How could this happen?

어떻게 이런 일이 있을 수 있습니까?

How did we forget what evil can do?

악이 어떤 일까지 할 수 있는지 어떻게 잊을 수 있단 말인가요?

We have lost the generation that saw World War II firsthand.

제2차 세계 대전을 직접 목격한 세대는 거의 남아 있지 않습니다.

Otherwise we reserve absolute evil for fiction.

반면에 허구 속에선 절대 악이 남아있죠.

In fables, they believe in true evil.

가상의 이야기에는 진정한 악이 있습니다.

Good is harder to define.

선한 것은 정의하기가 좀 더 어렵습니다.

There is no pure good.

완전한 선이란 존재하지 않아요.

If anyone says they know what pure good is,

만약에 누가 완전한 선이 무엇인지 안다고 한다면

it's probably evil.

그게 아마 악일 겁니다.

(Laughter)

In fantasy tales of hobbits and elves and dwarves,

호빗과 엘프와 드워프의 이야기에서

there was an idea that good comes in different forms and shapes,

선은 다양한 형태와 모양으로 나타나곤 했습니다.

often in conflict.

많은 경우 갈등 속에서였죠.

But they had to be united when facing absolute evil.

하지만 절대 악을 마주할 때는 연합해야 했습니다.

Good will disagree.

선은 서로 의견 차이가 있겠지만

Evil says, "No more disagreements ever."

악은 더 이상의 의견 차이는 없을 거라고 합니다.

That was life in real Mordor, the Soviet Union.

그게 실제 ‘모르도르’인 소비에트 연방에서의 삶이었으며

That's what Putin wants for Russia and the world.

바로 푸틴이 러시아와 세계에 원하는 것이었죠.

We celebrated the end of the Cold War, but for too long,

우리는 냉전 종식을 너무 오래 축하하기만 했어요.

we forgot that evil doesn’t die.

악은 사라지지 않는다는 사실을 잊었던 거죠.

It can be buried for a while under the rubble of the Berlin Wall,

베를린 장벽의 잔해 아래서 잠시 묻혀 있었을 뿐

but it grows back through the cracks of our apathy.

우리의 무관심이라는 틈을 통해 악이 다시 자라난 겁니다.

우리는 푸틴이...

We called it diplomacy

자유세계 지도자들과 동등하게 받아들여졌을 때 외교라고 불렀습니다.

when Putin was embraced by the leaders of the free world

as equal despite his crimes.

그의 범죄에도 불구하고요.

We called it engagement

우리가 러시아에서

when we bought trillions of dollars in Russian oil and gas,

몇조 달러 가치의 석유와 가스를 샀을 때는 포용이라고 했지만

money that built Putin's police state and his war machine.

결국 푸틴의 경찰 제국 형성과 전쟁 무기를 사들인 돈이 됐죠.

Let us call these things what they are:

이걸 있는 그대로 말합시다.

it was appeasement, it was collaboration.

우리는 양보하고 협력한 겁니다.

These days, we prefer to focus on domestic issues.

요즘 우리들은 대내적 문제에 집중하길 선호합니다.

과거를 가지고 다투고 미래에 대해서는 환상을 품고

We argue about the past,

we fantasize about the future

while ignoring the present.

정작 현재는 무시하면서 말이죠.

Once the move is made

일단 움직임이 시작되면

you cannot change it.

그걸 바꾸기는 어렵습니다.

Acknowledge the wrongdoings of the past,

과거의 잘못을 인정하세요.

but do not pretend it can be fixed.

하지만 그걸 고치려고 하지는 마세요.

It's the present that must be fixed.

고쳐야 할 것은 바로 현재입니다.

The heroes of the past were far from perfect.

과거의 영웅들은 완벽함과는 거리가 멀었습니다.

But the world we live in is better because of them.

하지만 우리가 사는 세상은 그들 덕분에 더 나아졌습니다.

We too cannot be perfect.

우리들도 역시 완벽할 수는 없습니다.

But we must always try to be better.

그러나 항상 더 나아지기 위해 반드시 노력해야 합니다.

As a chess player,

저는 체스 선수로서

I know that strategy is the future impact of present decisions.

제가 아는 전략은 현재의 결정이 미래에 영향을 준다는 것입니다.

However grand our plans are for two, five, even ten moves ahead,

두 수, 다섯 수 심지어 열 수까지 앞서갈 만큼 위대한 전략이라도

it's the move that we make now that determines that future.

그 미래를 결정하는 것은 바로 지금 만드는 변화입니다.

Ukraine is now on the front line of the war,

우크라이나는 현재 전쟁의 최전선에 있습니다.

global war of freedom against tyranny.

독재에 저항하며 자유를 추구하는 세계적 전쟁 말입니다.

The war the free world didn't want to admit existed.

자유세계가 인정하고 싶지 않아 하는 그런 전쟁이죠.

It cannot be ignored any longer.

하지만 더 이상 외면할 순 없습니다.

Brave Ukrainians

용맹한 우크라이나 사람들은

are fighting like hell and dying right now

지금 죽기 살기로 싸우며 죽어가고 있습니다.

to remind us not to take liberty for granted.

자유를 당연히 여기지 말라고 하면서요.

Putin,

이전의 독재자들과 마찬가지로 푸틴은

like every dictator before him,

underestimated the free will of free people.

자유로운 사람들이 가진 자유 의지를 과소평가했습니다.

They deserve every weapon,

그 사람들에겐 모든 무기가 필요합니다.

every resource

모든 자원이 필요합니다.

to win this war.

전쟁에서 승리하기 위해서 말이죠.

Because they're fighting for us.

그들은 우리를 위해 싸우고 있거든요.

Not only for the whole and free Ukraine.

완전하고 자유로운 우크라이나뿐만이 아니라요.

Everyone who told me a decade ago I was wrong,

10년 전에 저한테 제가 틀렸다고 말한 모든 사람이

now is telling I'm right.

이제는 제가 맞다고 합니다.

Unfortunately.

참 안타깝죠.

But we're still repeating the same mistakes

하지만 우리는 여전히 같은 실수를 반복하고 있습니다.

of thinking that we can muddle through

어떻게든 하면 될 거로 생각합니다.

without taking risks, without taking a stand.

위험을 감수하지도 강하게 맞서지도 않고 말이죠.

The price of stopping a dictator always goes up with every delay,

우리가 매일 지체하고 주저하는 동안

독재자를 막는 데 필요한 대가는 계속 커지고 있습니다.

every hesitation.

Meeting evil halfway,

악과 타협하는 것은

it's still a victory for evil.

악에겐 그것도 승리죠.

Evil tempts us with our weakness,

악은 우리의 약점을 가지고 유혹합니다.

with our desire for comfort, being comfortable,

주로 이러한 욕구들을 자극하죠.

편안함과 안락함을 추구하려는 욕구와

cautious, rational, civilized.

신중하며 합리적이고 문명화된 것처럼 보이려는 욕구를 말이죠.

What kind of civilization [are we] fighting for,

우리가 다시금 전쟁 범죄와 집단 학살을 용인한다면

if we allow war crimes and genocide again?

대체 그 어떤 문명을 위해 싸우는 건가요?

What kind of world are we leaving for our children and grandchildren

우리 자식들과 손주들에게 대체 무슨 세상을 물려주는 겁니까?

if we only talk of the past and the future

과거와 미래만 얘기하다가

while ignoring murder and misery in the present?

현재 벌어지는 살인과 고통을 무시한다면요.

This is not chess.

이건 체스가 아닙니다.

This is not a battle between opposite colors,

상반된 색깔들 사이에서 벌어지는 싸움이 아닙니다.

but of opposite values.

상반된 가치를 둔 싸움이죠.

Freedom, life and love

자유, 생명 그리고 사랑과

versus tyranny, death and hatred.

독재, 죽음 그리고 증오의 대결입니다.

This is not chess.

이건 체스가 아닙니다.

But sometimes things are black and white.

하지만 가끔은 흑백 논리로 설명되는 일이 있습니다.

Sometimes you have to fight for what you believe.

가끔은 여러분이 믿는 것을 위해 싸워야 할 때도 있습니다.

Or you lose it.

그렇지 않으면 집니다.

This is not chess.

이건 체스가 아닙니다.

There are no draws, no compromises in our battle with true evil.

진정한 악과의 싸움에서는 무승부도 타협도 없습니다.

It's win or lose.

승리 아니면 패배예요.

And so we must fight.

그래서 반드시 싸워야만 합니다.

And so we must win.

그리고 반드시 승리해야 합니다.
