I was on a long road trip this summer,

This violence, this brutality against black men

has been going on for centuries.

I mean, it's the same story. It's just different names.

It could have been Amadou Diallo.

This violence, this brutality,

is really something that's part of our national psyche.

정말 우리 국민 정서의 일부입니다.

It's part of our collective history.

우리 공동체 역사의 일부입니다.

What are we going to do about it?

우리는 이걸 어떻게 하면 좋을까요?

You know that part of us that still crosses the street,

우리 일부는 아직도 젊은 흑인 남성을 보면

locks the doors,

다른 쪽 길로 비키고

clutches the purses,

문을 잠그고

when we see young black men?

지갑을 움켜쥐죠?

That part.

I mean, I know we're not shooting people down in the street,

but I'm saying that the same stereotypes and prejudices

that fuel those kinds of tragic incidents

똑같은 고정관념과 편견이

are in us.

We've been schooled in them as well.

우리는 그렇게 교육도 받았습니다.

I believe that we can stop these types of incidents,

these Fergusons from happening,

by looking within and being willing to change ourselves.

So I have a call to action for you.

There are three things that I want to offer us today to think about

as ways to stop Ferguson from happening again;

저는 오늘 여러분들께 세 가지 방안을 제시하려 합니다.

three things that I think will help us

이 세가지가 젊은 흑인 남자에 대한

reform our images of young black men;

우리 이미지를 바꾸는데 도움이 될거라 생각합니다.

three things that I'm hoping will not only protect them

세 가지가 그들을 보호할 뿐만 아니라

but will open the world so that they can thrive.

그들이 잘 자랄 수 있는 세상을 열어줄 거라고 희망합니다.

Can you imagine that?

Can you imagine our country embracing young black men,

seeing them as part of our future, giving them that kind of openness,

그들을 미래의 일부로 보고 그런 열린 마음을 그들에게 주고

that kind of grace we give to people we love?

사랑하는 사람한테 주는 은총을 주는 것을 상상할 수 있습니까?

How much better would our lives be? How much better would our country be?

우리 삶은 얼마나 좋아질까요? 우리 나라는 얼마나 좋아질까요?

Let me just start with number one.

첫번째부터 시작하죠.

We gotta get out of denial.

우리는 부정에서 벗어나야 합니다.

Stop trying to be good people.

좋은 사람이 되려고 노력하지 마세요.

We need real people.

우리는 진짜 사람이 필요합니다.

You know, I do a lot of diversity work,

저는 다양성에 관한 일을 많이 합니다.

and people will come up to me at the beginning of the workshop.

사람들이 워크숍이 시작할 때 저한테 와서 말하죠.

They're like, "Oh, Ms. Diversity Lady, we're so glad you're here" --

"오. 미스 다양성, 당신이 여기 와서 기뻐요."

(Laughter) --

"but we don't have a biased bone in our body."

"하지만 우리는 편견을 갖고 있지 않아요."

And I'm like, "Really?

Because I do this work every day, and I see all my biases."

I mean, not too long ago, I was on a plane

얼마전에 비행기를 탔는데

and I heard the voice of a woman pilot coming over the P.A. system,

and I was just so excited, so thrilled.

아주 흥분했고 기분이 좋았어요.

I was like, "Yes, women, we are rocking it.

저는 이랬죠. "예, 여성들이 잘하고 있어.

We are now in the stratosphere."

It was all good, and then it started getting turbulent and bumpy,

다 좋았는데 그 다음에는 난류가 오고 흔들리기 시작했죠.

and I was like,

"I hope she can drive."

I know. Right.

But it's not even like I knew that was a bias

until I was coming back on the other leg and there's always a guy driving

and it's often turbulent and bumpy,

and I've never questioned the confidence of the male driver.

The pilot is good.

Now, here's the problem.

If you ask me explicitly, I would say, "Female pilot: awesome."

But it appears that when things get funky and a little troublesome, a little risky,

I lean on a bias that I didn't even know that I had.

You know, fast-moving planes in the sky,

I want a guy.

That's my default.

I'm going to tell you what we have learned.

The implicit association test, which measures unconscious bias,

you can go online and take it.

Five million people have taken it.

Turns out, our default is white. We like white people.

We prefer white. What do I mean by that?

When people are shown images of black men and white men,

we are more quickly able to associate

that picture with a positive word, that white person with a positive word,

than we are when we are trying to associate

positive with a black face, and vice versa.

When we see a black face,

it is easier for us to connect black with negative

than it is white with negative.

Seventy percent of white people taking that test prefer white.

실험을 한 백인의 70%가 백인을 더 좋아했어요.

Fifty percent of black people taking that test prefer white.

실험을 한 흑인의 50%가 백인을 더 좋아했어요.

You see, we were all outside when the contamination came down.

아시겠죠. 우리는 모두 이러한 편견에 오염되어 있어요.

What do we do about the fact that our brain automatically associates?

뇌가 자동으로 편견을 가지는데 어떻게 해야할까요?

You know, one of the things that you probably are thinking about,

and you're probably like, you know what,

이렇게 생각하는거죠.

I'm just going to double down on my color blindness.

Yes, I'm going to recommit to that.

I'm going to suggest to you, no.

여러분에게 제안을 해보려구요.

We've gone about as far as we can go trying to make a difference

피부색을 보지 않으려고 할 수 있는 한 최대로

trying to not see color.

노력을 해봤습니다.

The problem was never that we saw color. It was what we did when we saw the color.

문제는 우리가 색을 본다는 게 아니라 색을 봤을 때 하는 행동이었습니다.

It's a false ideal.

거짓된 이상향이었죠.

And while we're busy pretending not to see,

우리는 보지 않는 척 하느라 바빠서

we are not being aware of the ways in which racial difference

인종의 차이가 사람의 가능성을 바꾸는 방식을 인지하지 못했습니다.

is changing people's possibilities, that's keeping them from thriving,

이 때문에 발전하지도 못하고

and sometimes it's causing them an early death.

어떤 때는 일찍 사망하기도 합니다.

So in fact, what the scientists are telling us is, no way.

Don't even think about color blindness.

인종차별 금지 얘기를 하기보다는

In fact, what they're suggesting is,

stare at awesome black people.

성공한 흑인들을 보라는 겁니다.

Look at them directly in their faces and memorize them,

그들의 얼굴을 똑바로 쳐다보고 그들의 얼굴을 외우는 겁니다.

because when we look at awesome folks who are black,

왜냐하면 그런 성공한 흑인들을 보면

it helps to dissociate

우리 뇌 속에서 자동적으로 일어나는

the association that happens automatically in our brain.

연상을 끊는데 도움이 되기 때문이죠.

Why do you think I'm showing you these beautiful black men behind me?

제가 왜 이 뒤에 아름다운 흑인들을 보여주고 있다고 생각하셨어요?

There were so many, I had to cut them.

정말 많아서 골라야 했죠.

좋아요. 중요한 건 이거에요.

Okay, so here's the thing:

I'm trying to reset your automatic associations about who black men are.

저는 지금 흑인에 대한 여러분의 자동적인 연상을 지우려고 하는 겁니다.

I'm trying to remind you

저는 여러분에게 강조하고 있습니다.

that young black men grow up to be amazing human beings

젊은 흑인 남성도 자라서 멋진 사람,

who have changed our lives and made them better.

우리의 삶을 바꾸고 더 낫게 해줄 그런 사람이 될 수 있다는 걸요.

So here's the thing.

자, 그렇습니다.

The other possibility in science,

과학적으로 또 가능한 것은

and it's only temporarily changing our automatic assumptions,

비록 자동적으로 추정하는 걸 바꿔주는 건 일시적이지만

but one thing we know

이것도 가능합니다.

is that if you take a white person who is odious that you know,

만약 여러분이 아는 아주 혐오스러운 백인을 놓고

and stick it up next to a person of color,

유색인종인 사람을 옆에 둔다면,

a black person, who is fabulous,

가령 멋있는 흑인을 둔다면,

then that sometimes actually causes us to disassociate too.

이 또한 그런 연상작용을 끊는데에 실제로 도움이 됩니다.

So think Jeffrey Dahmer and Colin Powell.

그러니까 제프리 다머(백인 연쇄살인범)와 콜린 파월(흑인 정치인)을 생각하세요.

Just stare at them, right? (Laughter)

이 둘을 계속 보세요. 알겠죠? (웃음)

But these are the things. So go looking for your bias.

그러니까 중요한 건 여러분의 편견을 직시하는 겁니다.

Please, please, just get out of denial and go looking for disconfirming data

제발, 꼭, 부정만 하지 마시고 반증하는 자료를 찾아보세요.

that will prove that in fact your old stereotypes are wrong.

오래된 고정관념이 틀렸다는 사실을 증명해주는 자료를요.

Okay, so that's number one: number two,

좋아요, 이게 첫번째였구요. 두번째,

what I'm going to say is move toward young black men instead of away from them.

제가 하려는 말은 젊은 흑인 남성들을 배척하지 말고 마주해달라는 겁니다.

It's not the hardest thing to do,

이게 아주 어려운 일은 아닙니다.

but it's also one of these things

하지만 의식적이고 의도적으로 해야하는 일 중 하나죠.

where you have to be conscious and intentional about it.

몇 년 전에 제가 월스트리트 지역을 지나고 있었습니다.

You know, I was in a Wall Street area one time several years ago

when I was with a colleague of mine, and she's really wonderful

제 동료 중 아주 멋진 여성이 있는데 그녀와 함께 있을 때였습니다.

저와 함께 다양성에 대한 일을 하던 그녀는 유색인종 한국인이었습니다.

and she does diversity work with me and she's a woman of color, she's Korean.

And we were outside, it was late at night,

아주 밤 늦은 시간에 우리는 밖에서

and we were sort of wondering where we were going, we were lost.

길을 잃고 주변을 방황하는 중이었습니다.

And I saw this person across the street, and I was thinking, "Oh great, black guy."

저는 길 건너에 있는 이 사람을 보고 '오 잘됐다, 흑인이네' 생각했습니다.

I was going toward him without even thinking about it.

걸어가면서 그런 생각을 하는 줄도 몰랐습니다.

And she was like, "Oh, that's interesting."

그리고 동료였던 그녀는 "오, 이거 흥미롭네" 하더군요.

The guy across the street, he was a black guy.

길 건너에 있던 남자는 흑인이었습니다.

I think black guys generally know where they're going.

저는 흑인들이 일반적으로 길을 더 잘 안다고 생각한 겁니다.

I don't know why exactly I think that, but that's what I think.

왜 그런지는 정확히 모르지만 그게 그냥 제 생각이었어요.

So she was saying, "Oh, you were going, 'Yay, a black guy'?"

제 동료는 "너는 '좋았어, 흑인이군.' 이라고 생각했겠지?

She said, "I was going, 'Ooh, a black guy.'"

근데 난 '어머나, 흑인이야.' 라고 생각했어."라고 말했죠.

Other direction. Same need, same guy, same clothes,

다른 방향이었습니다. 같은 필요, 같은 남자, 같은 옷,

same time, same street, different reaction.

같은 시각, 같은 길에서 다른 반응이 나온거죠.

And she said, "I feel so bad. I'm a diversity consultant.

그리고 그녀는 "아, 어쩌면 좋아. 나는 다양성 상담가인데

I did the black guy thing. I'm a woman of color. Oh my God!"

흑인을 그렇게 봤어! 나도 유색인종인데, 맙소사!"

And I said, "You know what? Please. We really need to relax about this."

그리고 저는 "있잖아, 우리 좀 진정해보자."라고 말했습니다.

I mean, you've got to realize I go way back with black guys.

그러니까 저는, '흑인'을 알고 지낸지는 오래되었단 말이죠.

(Laughter)

My dad is a black guy. You see what I'm saying?

우리 아버지가 흑인이시라구요. 무슨 말인지 아시겠어요?

I've got a 6'5" black guy son. I was married to a black guy.

전 195cm짜리 흑인 아들이 있고 흑인 남자랑 결혼했다구요.

My black guy thing is so wide and so deep

흑인에 관한 제 경험은 꽤 넓고 깊은 것이라

that I can pretty much sort and figure out who that black guy is,

저는 그 흑인이 어떤 사람일지 꽤 잘 알아볼 수 있었고

and he was my black guy.

제 예상이 맞았던 거죠.

He said, "Yes, ladies, I know where you're going. I'll take you there."

그가 말했죠. "네, 숙녀분 거기 잘 알죠. 모셔다 드릴게요."

You know, biases are the stories we make up about people

여러분, 편견이란 우리가 누군가를 미처 알아보기도 전에

before we know who they actually are.

그들에 대해 우리 스스로가 지어내는 이야기입니다.

But how are we going to know who they are

하지만 그들이 누군지 우리가 어떻게 알 수 있을까요?

when we've been told to avoid and be afraid of them?

그들을 피하고, 두려워하라고 배웠는데 말입니다.

So I'm going to tell you to walk toward your discomfort.

당신이 불편함을 느끼는 쪽으로 한 발짝 다가가 보세요.

And I'm not asking you to take any crazy risks.

정신나간 위험을 감수하라는게 아닙니다.

I'm saying, just do an inventory,

제 말은 그저 조사를 좀 해보시고

expand your social and professional circles.

여러분의 사회적, 직업적 집단을 넓혀보세요.

Who's in your circle?

당신의 집단 안엔 누가 있죠?

Who's missing?

누가 없습니까?

How many authentic relationships

흑인 청년, 사람, 남성, 여성들과

do you have with young black people, folks, men, women?

진정한 관계를 얼마나 맺고 계십니까?

Or any other major difference from who you are

혹은 당신과 크게 다르거나

and how you roll, so to speak?

말하자면 당신 스타일과는 다른 사람들과는요?

Because, you know what? Just look around your periphery.

여러분 주변을 한 번 둘러보세요.

There may be somebody at work, in your classroom,

여러분의 직장이나, 교실

in your house of worship, somewhere, there's some black young guy there.

기도드리는 곳이든, 어디든 흑인 청년이 있을겁니다.

And you're nice. You say hi.

여러분은 좋은 사람이니까 인사도 나누시겠죠.

I'm saying go deeper, closer, further, and build the kinds of relationships,

제 말은 더 깊고, 가깝고 한층 더 나아가서

the kinds of friendships that actually cause you to see the holistic person

사람을 전체로 볼 수 있고 고정관념을 거스를 수 있게 하는

그런 관계, 그런 우정을 쌓으라는 겁니다.

and to really go against the stereotypes.

저는 제 백인 친구들 중에 꼭 그런 사람들이 있기 때문에

I know some of you are out there,

여러분들 중 몇 명은 그럴거란 걸 압니다.

"너는 내가 지금 얼마나 이상한지 모르지.

"You have no idea how awkward I am.

Like, I don't think this is going to work for me.

내가 잘 할 수 있을 것 같지 않아.

I'm sure I'm going to blow this."

내가 다 망칠 것 같아."라고 말하죠.

Okay, maybe, but this thing is not about perfection. It's about connection.

어쩌면 그럴지도요.

하지만 이건 완벽에 대한 것이 아니라 관계에 대한 것입니다.

And you're not going to get comfortable before you get uncomfortable.

그리고 불편한 과정을 거치지 않고선 편안해질 수 없습니다.

I mean, you just have to do it.

여러분들은 그냥 해 보셔야 합니다.

And young black men, what I'm saying is

제가 말하고자 하는 것은 어떤 젊은 흑인 남성이

if someone comes your way, genuinely and authentically, take the invitation.

당신 앞에 다가온다면, 진정으로, 진심으로 초대에 응하세요.

Not everyone is out to get you.

모든 사람들을 말하는 것이 아닙니다.

Go looking for those people who can see your humanity.

당신의 인간성을 볼 수 있는 사람을 찾아 나서십시오.

You know, it's the empathy and the compassion

아시다시피, 공감이나 동정심이란

that comes out of having relationships with people who are different from you.

Something really powerful and beautiful happens:

you start to realize that they are you,

that they are part of you, that they are you in your family,

and then we cease to be bystanders

and we become actors, we become advocates,

and we become allies.

So go away from your comfort into a bigger, brighter thing,

because that is how we will stop another Ferguson from happening.

That's how we create a community

where everybody, especially young black men, can thrive.

So this last thing is going to be harder,

and I know it, but I'm just going to put it out there anyway.

When we see something, we have to have the courage to say something,

우리가 뭔가 보았을 땐 말할 용기를 내야만 합니다.

even to the people we love.

그 상대가 우리가 사랑하는 사람이라도 말입니다.

You know, it's holidays and it's going to be a time

휴가 때 식탁에 둘러앉아서

when we're sitting around the table and having a good time.

좋은 시간을 보낼 때 말입니다.

Many of us, anyways, will be in holidays,

대부분의 여러분들이 휴가를 가지겠죠.

and you've got to listen to the conversations around the table.

식탁에서 오가는 대화들을 듣게 되죠.

You start to say things like, "Grandma's a bigot."

당신은 이런 말을 하게 됩니다. "할머니가 혐오주의자였어!"

(Laughter)

"Uncle Joe is racist."

"조 삼촌이 인종 차별주의자라니!"

And you know, we love Grandma and we love Uncle Joe. We do.

We know they're good people, but what they're saying is wrong.

And we need to be able to say something, because you know who else is at the table?

The children are at the table.

And we wonder why these biases don't die, and move from generation to generation?

Because we're not saying anything.

We've got to be willing to say, "Grandma, we don't call people that anymore."

"Uncle Joe, it isn't true that he deserved that.

And we've got to be willing

우리는 아이들이 인종차별의 문제를

to not shelter our children from the ugliness of racism

외면하지 않게 해야 합니다.

when black parents don't have the luxury to do so,

특히 젊은 흑인 아들을 둔 흑인 부모님들은

especially those who have young black sons.

그렇게 할 수도 없을 때 말입니다.

We've got to take our lovely darlings, our future,

우리는 사랑스러운 아이들에게 미래에 대해 말해주어야 합니다.

and we've got to tell them we have an amazing country with incredible ideals,

우린 그들에게 말해줘야 합니다. 우린 놀라운 이상을 가진 나라를 가졌고

we have worked incredibly hard, and we have made some progress,

엄청나게 노력해서 진보를 이룩했지만

but we are not done.

아직 완성된 것이 아니라고 말입니다.

We still have in us this old stuff

우리에게는 구세대의 잔재가 남아있고

about superiority and it is causing us

이것은 우리의 기관과 사회, 세대를

to embed those further into our institutions

물들이고 있으며,

and our society and generations,

우월성을 조장하고,

and it is making for despair

결국은 절망과 불공평한 차이,

and disparities and a devastating devaluing of young black men.

젊은 흑인들에 대한 끔찍한 평가 절하로 이어질 수 있다고요.

We still struggle, you have to tell them,

우리는 아직 싸우고 있다고 말해줘야 합니다.

with seeing both the color

유색인종에 대한 차별, 젊은 흑인 남성에 대한 차별에 대해서

and the character of young black men,

but that you, and you expect them,

그리고 저는 여러분이

흑인이 그들 자체로 보일 수 있는 사회를 만들기 위해서

to be part of the forces of change in this society

부당함에 맞서는,

that will stand against injustice and is willing, above all other things,

사회에 변화를 도모하는 사람이 되길

to make a society where young black men can be seen for all of who they are.

바란다고 말해주어야 합니다.

So many amazing black men,

정말 많은 멋진 흑인들이 있습니다.

those who are the most amazing statesmen that have ever lived,

가장 멋진 정치가,

용감한 군인,

brave soldiers,

awesome, hardworking laborers.

경탄할 만한, 고된 노동을 하는 노동자들.

These are people who are powerful preachers.

이 사람들은 가장 강력한 전도가가 될 것입니다.

They are incredible scientists and artists and writers.

이들은 뛰어난 과학자고, 예술가이며 작가입니다.

They are dynamic comedians.

엄청난 코메디언이죠.

They are doting grandpas,

그들은 맹목적으로 사랑을 주는 할아버지이고

caring sons.

보살피는 손주입니다.

They are strong fathers,

그들은 강인한 아버지이며

and they are young men with dreams of their own.

자신의 꿈을 지닌 청년입니다.
