This time, I'm going to talk about mental illness.

But it has to be technological,

so I'll talk about electroshock therapy.

전기충격요법에 관해 이야기 해보겠습니다. (웃음)

(Laughter)

You know, ever since man had any notion

그러니까...옛날 사람들은

that some of his other people, his colleagues,

주변 사람들이나 동료들 중 누군가가

could be different, could be strange, could be severely depressed

평소와 달리 이상해 보이고, 심한 우울증세를 보이거나

or what we now recognize as schizophrenia,

이른바 정신분열증 증세를 보인다면,

he was certain that this kind of illness had to come from evil spirits

이런 종류의 "질병"의 원인은

몸 속으로 들어간 악령 때문이라고 믿었습니다.

getting into the body.

So the way of treating these diseases in early times

그래서 이 질병에 대한 그 당시 치료방법은

어떻게 해서든지 악령들을 내쫓아버리는 것이었고,

was to, in some way or other, exorcise those evil spirits.

이런 퇴마방법은 아직도 존재합니다.

And this is still going on, as you know.

But it wasn't enough to use the priests.

하지만 성직자들의 도움만으로는 부족했죠.

When medicine became somewhat scientific, in about 450 BC,

의학이 체계성을 띄기 시작한 기원전 450년 정도부터,

with Hippocrates and those boys,

히포크레스와 그 학파 사람들은

they tried to look for herbs, plants

말 그대로 나쁜 기운을 떨쳐버릴 수 있는

that would literally shake the bad spirits out.

약초나 식물들을 찾고 있었습니다

So they found certain plants that could cause convulsions.

결국 그들은 경련을 일으키는 특별한 식물들을 찾아냈습니다

And the herbals,

그리고 중세시대 말의 르네상스 시대까지 나왔던

the botanical books of up to the late Middle Ages, the Renaissance,

are filled with prescriptions for causing convulsions

to shake the evil spirits out.

Finally, in about the 16th century,

a physician whose name was Theophrastus Bombastus Aureolus von Hohenheim --

'테오프라투스 봄바스투스 아우리큘라리스 본 호엔하임'이라는 물리학자는,

called Paracelsus, a name probably familiar to some people here --

'파라셀수스'라는 이름이 여러분들에게는 더 친숙하겠죠.

(Laughter)

good old Paracelsus --

found that he could predict the degree of convulsion

경련을 유발하는 장뇌(켐퍼- 좀약의 재료) 사용량을 조절하면

by using a measured amount of camphor to produce the convulsion.

경련의 정도를 예측할 수 있다는 것을 알아냈습니다

Can you imagine going to your closet, pulling out a mothball

우울할 때 옷장을 열고 좀약을 씹어먹는 장면이

and chewing on it if you're feeling depressed?

상상이 되시나요?

It's better than Prozac, but I wouldn't recommend it.

우울증 치료제 Prozac보단 낫겠지만, 추천하고 싶지는 않네요.

(Laughter)

So, what we see in the 17th, 18th century

그래서, 17세기와 18세기에 들어서는

is the continued search for medications other than camphor that'll do the trick.

사람들은 장뇌를 대신할 만한 약물을 계속 찾아다녔습니다.

Well, along comes Benjamin Franklin,

이제는, 벤자민 프랭클린을 이야기 해 봅시다

and he comes close to convulsing himself

with a bolt of electricity off the end of his kite.

And so people begin thinking in terms of electricity to produce convulsions.

And then we fast-forward to about 1932,

when three Italian psychiatrists who were largely treating depression

began to notice among their patients, who were also epileptics,

that if they had a series of epileptic fits, a lot of them in a row --

the depression would very frequently lift.

Not only would it lift, but it might never return.

So they got very interested in producing convulsions,

measured types of convulsions.

And they thought,

"Well, we've got electricity, we'll plug somebody into the wall.

That always makes hair stand up and people shake a lot."

So they tried it on a few pigs, and none of the pigs were killed.

So they went to the police and they said,

"We know that at the Rome railroad station,

there are all these lost souls wandering around,

Someone who is, as the Italians say, "gagootz."

So they found this "gagootz" guy,

a 39-year-old man who was really hopelessly schizophrenic,

심각한 정신분열증세를 보이는 39세의 이 남성은

who was known, had been known for months,

지난 몇 달간 꽤 알려진 인물이었습니다

to be literally defecating on himself,

옷을 입은 채로 배변을 하고

talking nothing that made any sense,

아무 의미없는 말을 하는 것으로 유명했죠.

and they brought him into the hospital.

그들은 그 남성을 병원으로 데려왔습니다

So these three psychiatrists,

after about two or three weeks of observation,

laid him down on a table,

connected his temples to a very small source of current.

They thought, "Well, we'll try 55 volts, two-tenths of a second.

So they did that.

Well, I have the following from a firsthand observer,

who told me this about 35 years ago,

when I was thinking about these things for some research project of mine.

He said, "This fellow" -- remember, he wasn't even put to sleep --

"after this major grand mal convulsion,

'What the fuck are you assholes trying to do?'"

(Laughter)

If I could only say that in Italian.

이 말을 이태리어로 할 수 있다면 좋았을텐데요.

(Laughter)

Well, they were happy as could be,

아무튼 그 의사들은 기뻤습니다, 왜냐하면 그 환자는

because he hadn't said a rational word in the weeks of observation.

몇 주의 관찰기간 동안, 말이 되는 소리를 한번도 한 적이 없었기 때문입니다

(Laughter)

So they plugged him in again,

and this time, they used 110 volts for half a second.

And to their amazement, after it was over,

he began speaking like he was perfectly well.

He relapsed a little bit, they gave him a series of treatments,

and he was essentially cured.

But of course, having schizophrenia,

within a few months, it returned.

But they wrote a paper about this,

and everybody in the western world began using electricity

to convulse people who were either schizophrenic

or severely depressed.

It didn't work very well on the schizophrenics,

but it was pretty clear in the '30s and by the middle of the '40s

that electroconvulsive therapy was very, very effective

우울증을 치료하는 데에는 전기충격요법이

in the treatment of depression.

And of course, in those days, there were no antidepressant drugs,

and it became very, very popular.

전기충격요법은 각광을 받기 시작했습니다.

They would anesthetize people, convulse them ...

환자를 우선 마취시킨 후에

전기충격을 가하면 되는 거였지만, 가장 어려웠던 점은

But the real difficulty was that there was no way to paralyze muscles.

환자의 근육을 마비시킬 방법이 없다는 것이었죠

So people would have a real grand mal seizure.

그래서 환자들은 심한 발작을 일으키곤 했고

Bones were broken; especially in old, fragile people, you couldn't use it.

특히 노약자나 뼈가 약한 사람들은 뼈가 부러지기도 했기 때문에

전기충격요법을 사용할 수 없었습니다

And then in the late 1950s, the so-called "muscle relaxants"

그 후, 1950년대 말에 이른바 '근육 이완제' 가

were developed by pharmacologists,

약리학자들에 의해 개발되었고,

and it got so that you could induce a complete convulsion,

이를 이용해서 완벽한 경련증상을 일으킬 수 있게 되었습니다.

an electroencephalographic convulsion -- you could see it on the brain waves --

바로 '뇌파계 경련'인데요. 뇌파 측정을 통해서만 관찰할 수 있고

without causing any convulsion in the body

발가락이 움찔하는 것 외에는 몸의 경련은 나타나지 않습니다.

except a little bit of twitching of the toes.

So again, it was very, very popular and very, very useful.

그래서 아주 많이 사용되었고 , 상당히 도움이 되었죠.

Well, you know, in the middle '60s, the first antidepressants came out.

60년대 중반에는 아시다시피

처음으로 우울증치료제가 개발되었습니다. Tofranil말이에요

Tofranil was the first.

In the late '70s, early '80s, there were others,

70년대 말과 80년대 초에는 다른 치료제들도 나왔고

and they were very effective.

그 약들은 아주 효과적이었습니다

And patients' rights groups seemed to get very upset

그리고, 환자 인권단체들이 치료과정에서 목격되는

about the kinds of things that they would witness,

여러 증세들때문에 이 치료법에 반대했습니다.

so the whole idea of electroconvulsive, electroshock therapy disappeared,

결국 이 전기적 경련을 일으키는 전기충격요법은 사라지게 되었죠

but has had a renaissance in the last 10 years.

그러나 최근 10년 사이에 다시 부흥기를 맞이합니다.

And the reason that it has had a renaissance

이렇게 이 치료법이 다시 살아난 이유는

is that probably about 10 percent of the people, severe depressives,

심각한 우울증을 앓고 있는 사람들 중의 약 10% 정도는

do not respond, regardless of what is done for them.

어떤 치료법에도 반응을 보이지 않았기 때문입니다.

Now why am I telling you this story at this meeting?

자, 그럼 왜 제가 이런 이야기들을 하는걸까요?

I'm telling you this story because, actually,

사질 제가 이런 이야기를 하는 이유는

ever since Richard called me and asked me to talk about --

리차드가 저에게 전화해서 말하기를

as he asked all of his speakers --

--그가 강연자들에게 늘 요구하듯이--

to talk about something that would be new to this audience

청중들에게 무언가 새로운 것을 이야기 해달라고 했기 때문입니다

that we had never talked about, never written about.

한번도 이야기 한 적도 없고, 글로 쓴 적도 없는 것말이죠.

I've been planning this moment.

이 기회가 오길 기다렸습니다

This reason really is that I am a man who, almost 30 years ago,

이런 얘기를 하는 진짜 이유는, 제가 바로 대략 30년 전에

두 번의 장기적인 전기충격 치료로 새 삶을 찾은 당사자이기 때문입니다

had his life saved by two long courses of electroshock therapy.

And let me tell you this story.

그 이야기를 해볼까 합니다.

I was, in the 1960s, in a marriage.

제가 결혼생활을 하던 1960년대는 한마디로 "좋지 않았습니다"

To use the word "bad" would be perhaps the understatement of the year.

그게 그 당시에 대한 절제된 표현일겁니다.

It was dreadful.

끔찍했죠

There are, I'm sure, enough divorced people in this room

지금 이 중에는 이혼을 경험했던 분들도 계실텐데요.

to know about the hostility, the anger, who knows what.

그 분들이라면 적개심, 분노가 어떤 건지 아실겁니다.

Being someone who had had a very difficult childhood,

굉장히 어려운 소년기를 보내고

a very difficult adolescence --

굉장히 어려운 사춘기를 보내고

it had to do with not quite poverty, but close.

가난함과는 거리가 약간 있으나 아주 없지는 않고

It had to do with being brought up in a family where no one spoke English,

가족중에 누구도 영어로 말하거나, 영어를 읽거나 쓰지 못하는

no one could read or write English.

그런 가정에서 자랐고

It had to do with death and disease and lots of other things.

죽음과 병 등에 익숙해 있던 저는

I was a little prone to depression.

우울증에 빠지기 쉬운 사람이었습니다.

So, as things got worse, as we really began to hate each other,

그래서 결혼생활이 점점 나빠지고 서로 미워지기 시작하면서

I became progressively depressed over a period of a couple of years

깨질 운명이었던 결혼생활을 회복하려 애쓰던 몇년 동안

trying to save this marriage,

점점 더 우울증을 앓게 되었습니다.

which was inevitably not to be saved.

점점 더 우울증을 앓게 되었습니다.

Finally, I would schedule -- all my major surgical cases,

I was scheduling them for 12, one o'clock in the afternoon,

because I couldn't get out of bed before about 11 o'clock.

Anybody who's been depressed here knows what that's like.

우울증을 앓아 본 적 있는 분이라면 어떤 느낌인지 아실거에요

이불조차 제 손으로 치울 수 없었죠

I couldn't even pull the covers off myself.

Well, you're in a university medical center,

제가 있던 대학병원에서는

where everybody knows everybody.

서로 너무나 잘 알고 있었기 때문에, 동료들에게 숨길 수 없었습니다

And it's perfectly clear to my colleagues, so my referrals began to decrease.

그래서 저에게 외뢰들어오는 환자수가 줄기 시작하죠

As my referrals began to decrease,

진료 의뢰가 줄어들수록

I clearly became increasingly depressed,

저는 더욱 더 우울증에 빠졌습니다

until I thought, "My God, I can't work anymore."

오 주여, 저는 이제 더 이상 일을 할 수 없습니다라고 할 정도로요

And, in fact, it didn't make any difference,

사실은 그런 것도 전혀 소용 없었습니다

because I didn't have any patients anymore.

이미 저는 그 때 환자가 한 명도 없었거든요

So, with the advice of my physician,

그래서 제 의사의 조언에 따라

I had myself admitted to the acute care psychiatric unit

제가 근무하던 대학병원의 정신과에 입원하기로 하죠

of our university hospital.

And my colleagues, who had known me since medical school,

그 때, 의과대학원시절 때부터 저를 알던 동료들은

in that place, said, "Don't worry, Shep.

"걱정하지마, 친구. 6 주만 지나면

Six weeks, you're back in the operating room.

다시 일을 할 수 있을꺼야. 모든 일이 잘 풀릴꺼야"라고 했습니다

Everything's going to be great."

Well, you know what bovine stercus is?

아, "bovine stercus"가 무엇인지 아십니까? (Bovine Stercus : 'bullshit'의 라틴어)

That proved to be a lot of bovine stercus.

그들이 했던 말은 완전히 "bovine stercus(헛소리)"였습니다.

(Laughter)

I know some people who got tenure in that place with lies like that.

그 병원에는 그런 거짓말로 명예교수 자리를 얻은 사람들이 몇 명있죠

(Laughter)

(Laughter and applause)

So I was one of their failures.

저는 그들의 실패한 환자 중 한명이었습니다

But it wasn't that simple,

because by the time I got out of that unit,

I was not functional at all.

I could hardly see five feet in front of myself.

I shuffled when I walked. I was bowed over.

I rarely bathed.

거의 몸을 씻지도 않았고 면도도 하지 않았습니다. 끔찍했죠

I sometimes didn't shave.

It was dreadful.

And it was clear -- not to me,

분명한 사실은

because nothing was clear to me at that time anymore --

- 그때 전 판단력이 흐려져 있어서 몰랐지만 -

that I would need long-term hospitalization

제게는 장기간의 입원치료가 필요하다는 것이었습니다.

in that awful place called a "mental hospital."

정신병원이라는 끔찍한 장소에서 말이죠.

So I was admitted, in the spring of 1973,

그래서 저는 1973년 봄에 입원하게 되었습니다.

to the Institute of Living, which used to be called the Hartford Retreat.

하트포드 요양소라고 불리우던 정신과치료 센터였는데요

It was founded in the 18th century,

18세기에 지어진 곳인데

the largest psychiatric hospital in the state of Connecticut,

그 병원은 아주 큰 국립병원들을 제외하면

other than the huge public hospitals that existed at that time.

그 당시에는 코네티컷에서 가장 큰

정신병원 이었습니다

And they tried everything they had.

그 곳에서 의사들은 모든 치료방법을 시도했었습니다

They tried the usual psychotherapy.

기본적인 심리치료도 하고

They tried every medication available in those days.

그 당시 있던 모든 약을 써보았죠

And they did have Tofranil and other things -- Mellaril, who knows what.

Tofranil이나 잘 알지도 못하는 Mellaril같은 것도 모두 써보았지만

Nothing happened except that I got jaundiced from one of these things.

아무 효과가 없었습니다. 오히려 치료제중 하나 때문에 황달을 앓았죠.

And finally,

그래서 결국에는, 제가 코네티컷에서는 꽤 유명했던 덕분에

because I was well-known in Connecticut,

they decided they better have a meeting of the senior staff.

제 담당의사들은 선임급 의사들과 회의가 필요하다고 생각했습니다

All the senior staff got together, and I later found out what happened.

임원들이 모두 모이고, 저는 나중에 알게 되었지만

They put all their heads together,

그들은 머리를 싸메고 생각해 본 결과

and they decided that there was nothing that could be done

세상과 단절된 의사인 저를

for this surgeon who had essentially separated himself from the world,

who by that time had become so overwhelmed,

not just with depression and feelings of worthlessness and inadequacy,

쓸모없는 인간이라는 느낌,

무력감 뿐만 아니라

but with obsessional thinking,

강박증에 완전히 지배되고 있었습니다.

obsessional thinking about coincidences.

우연함에 대한 강박적인 생각이요.

And there were particular numbers that every time I saw them,

저는 어떤 특정한 숫자들을 볼 때마다

just got me dreadfully upset, all kinds of ritualistic observances ...

극도의 혼란상태에 빠져서 온갖 특정된 행동을 하곤 했습니다.

just awful, awful stuff.

그냥 아주 끔찍한 상황이죠

Remember when you were a kid, and you had to step on every line?

어렸을 때 길에 그려져 있는 모든 선을 밟곤 했던 때가 있죠?

Well, I was a grown man who had all of these rituals,

저는 다큰 어른인데도 그런 특정 행동을 하는 사람이었다고 생각하시면 됩니다

and it got so there was a throbbing, there was a ferocious fear in my head.

심장은 두근거렸고, 머리 속은 극도의 두려움으로 가득차 있었습니다

You've seen this painting by Edvard Munch, "The Scream."

에드바르트 뭉크의 "절규"라는 그림 보신 적 있죠.

"절규"..."비명".. 매 순간은 저에게 절규와 같았습니다

Every moment was a scream; it was impossible.

So they decided there was no therapy, there was no treatment.

모든 것이 불가능 했습니다. 의사들은 더 이상의 치료약이나

But there was one treatment,

치료방법이 없다고 말했죠. 단 하나 유일한 치료법이 있었습니다.

which actually had been pioneered at the Hartford Hospital

이 하트포트 병원에서 1940년대 초에 개발된 방법인데요.

in the early 1940s,

and you can imagine what it was: it was prefrontal lobotomy.

바로 전두엽 절제술이었습니다.

(Imitates a popping sound)

So they decided -- I didn't know this, again, I found this out later --

그래서 그들이 결정하길 -- 전 이때까지도 몰랐죠

나중에 알았지만 --

that the only thing that could be done

43살이나 먹은 저를 위한 유일한 치료법은

was for this 43-year-old man to have a prefrontal lobotomy.

전두엽 절제술을 시술하는 것 뿐이라고

결론지었던 것이었습니다.

Well, as in all hospitals,

모든 병원들이 그렇듯이

there was a resident assigned to my case.

저에게는 27살의 레지던트가 붙어 있었는데요.

He was 27 years old,

and he would meet with me two or three times a week.

그는 저와 일주일에 두 세번 정도 만났고,

And of course, I had been there, what, three or four months at the time.

그 때가 아마 제가 입원하고 서너달 쯤 지났을 때였을 겁니다.

He asked to meet with the senior staff, and they agreed to meet with him,

그는 선임 의사들과의 면담을 요청했고, 그의 요청은 받아들여졌습니다.

because he was very well thought of in that place.

병원 내에선 그에 대한 평판이 좋았고,

장래가 촉망되는 레지던트였거든요.

They thought he had a really extraordinary future.

And he dug in his heels and said,

회의에서 그는 당당하게 말했습니다.

"No. I know this man better than any of you.

"아니요. 저는 이 환자를 당신들보다 훨씬 잘 압니다. 저는 그를 자주 만났지만

I have met with him over and over again.

You've just seen him from time to time. You've read reports and so forth.

I really honestly believe that the basic problem here is pure depression,

제 생각에는 근본적인 문제는 순전히 우울증이고,

and all of the obsessional thinking comes out of it.

And you know, of course, what'll happen if you do a prefrontal lobotomy.

그리고 전두엽 절제술을 사용하면 어떻게 될지 다들 아시잖아요.

Any of the results along the spectrum,

생길 수 있는 많은 결과들 중에

from pretty bad to terrible, terrible, terrible, is going to happen.

아주 나쁜 것 부터 아주 최악의 상황까지

일어날 수 있습니다. 그가 노력만 한다면

If he does the best he can,

he will have no further obsessions,

강박증은 없어질 것이고

probably no depression,

우울증도 없어지겠죠. 하지만 머리는 둔해지고,

but his affect will be dulled,

he will never go back to surgery,

다시는 의사로 돌아가 진료도 할 수 없고,

he will never be the loving father that he was to his two children,

그의 두 아이들을 사랑하던 아빠로 절대 돌아갈 수 없을 것 입니다

his life will be changed.

그의 인생은 바뀌겠죠. 아무리 결과가 좋아봐야

If he has the usual result,

he'll end up like 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.'

"뻐꾸기 둥지 위로 날아간 새"의 주인공같이 인생을 마감할 겁니다.

And you know about that, just essentially in a stupor the rest of his life."

다들 아시죠. 남은 여생동안 인사불성으로 살게 되는거죠.

"Well," he said, "can't we try a course of electroshock therapy?"

그는 이어서 말했죠, "전기충격요법을 사용하면 안됩니까?"

And you know why they agreed?

They agreed to humor him.

다들 동의했는데, 왜 했는지 아세요? 단지 그 레지던트를 얼르기 위해서였습니다.

They just thought, "Well, we'll give a course of 10.

그들은 단순한 생각으로 "10일 동안만 치료를 해 보겠어.

So we'll lose a little time. Big deal. It doesn't make any difference."

So they gave the course of 10,

and the first -- the usual course, incidentally, was six to eight,

plugged me into the wires, put me to sleep, gave me the muscle relaxant.

Six didn't work. Seven didn't work. Eight didn't work.

At nine, I noticed --

놀랍게도 뭔가 느낌이 왔습니다.

it's wonderful that I could notice anything --

I noticed a change.

변화를 느꼈지요. 열번째 날에서는 진정한 변화를 느꼈습니다

And at 10, I noticed a real change.

And he went back to them,

레지던트는 다시 임원들에게 가서 열 흘은 더 해도 된다는 동의를 얻었습니다

and they agreed to do another 10.

Again, not a single one of them --

또 다시, 그 어떤 하나도

I think there are about seven or eight of them --

-- 제 생각으론 일곱번 째나 여덟번 째에선 --

thought this would do any good.

효과가 없었습니다. 이전의 변화는 일시적인 것이 아닐까 생각했었죠.

They thought this was a temporary change.

그러나 열여섯, 열일곱번 째가 될수록

But, lo and behold, by 16, by 17,

there were demonstrable differences in the way I felt.

제가 느낄 수 있는 뚜렷한 변화가 나타났습니다.

By 18 and 19, I was sleeping through the night.

열여덟번째과 열아홉번째 때에 저는 밤에 잠을 잘 수 있었습니다

And by 20, I had the sense, I really had the sense,

스무번째에는 이 우울증을

떨쳐낼 수 있다는 확신이 들었고,

that I could overcome this,

that I was now strong enough that by an act of will,

제 의지대로 활동할 수 있을 만큼 정신력이 강해졌고,

I could blow the obsessional thinking away.

강박증도 떨쳐 버릴 수 있었습니다.

I could blow the depression away.

우울증에서도 벗어날 수 있었습니다.

And I've never forgotten -- I never will forget --

제 병동의 부엌 앞에 서 있을 때를

standing in the kitchen of the unit --

저는 결코 잊을 수 없습니다.

it was a Sunday morning in January of 1974 --

1973년 1월인가. 74년이군요. 일요일 아침 이었는데

standing in the kitchen by myself and thinking,

저는 부엌에 서서 "나는 이걸 이겨낼 자신이 있다"고 생각했죠

"I've got the strength now to do this."

It was as though those tightly coiled wires in my head had been disconnected,

그것은 마치 제 머리를 조이고 있던 철사가 끊어진 듯한 느낌이었고

and I could think clearly.

머리속이 또렷해졌습니다.

But I need a formula.

when I begin thinking obsessionally, obsessively.

Well, the Gilbert and Sullivan fans in this room

will remember "Ruddigore,"

그들의 오페라 "루디 고어"에 나오는 미치광이 마가렛을 아실겁니다.

and they will remember Mad Margaret,

and they will remember that she was married

그리고 그녀가 데스파드 무르가트로이드 경과

to a fella named Sir Despard Murgatroyd.

결혼했다는 것도 아시겠죠.

And she used to go nuts every five minutes or so in the play.

극중에서 그녀는 5분마다 미치곤 했는데요.

And he said to her, "We must have a word to bring you back to reality,

무르가트로이드경은 이런 말을 하죠. "아무래도 당신을 현실세계로 데려오기 위한 주문이 필요해.

and the word, my dear, will be 'Basingstoke.'"

그리고 그 주문은 바로 '베이징스토크(Basingstoke)'야" (Basingstoke : 영국 남부의 마을 지명)

So every time she got a little nuts, he would say, "Basingstoke!"

그래서 그녀가 미칠 때마다

그는 "베이징스토크!"라 외쳤고, 그녀는

And she would say, "Basingstoke, it is!" And she'd be fine for a little while.

"그래. 베이징스토크지..."라며 한동안은 정상으로 돌아오곤 했습니다.

Well, you know, I'm from the Bronx. I can't say "Basingstoke."

그런데 브롱스 출신인 제가 "베이징스토크"라고 할 수는 없구요.

But I had something better.

그러나 좀 더 괜찮은 단어가 있었죠. 아주 간단했습니다.

And it was very simple.

It was, "Ah, fuck it!"

그것은 "아아, 씨발!"

(웃음) '베이징스토크' 보다 훨씬 낫죠.

Much better than "Basingstoke,"

at least for me.

적어도 저에게는 그랬어요. 세상에, 정말 효과가 있었습니다.

And it worked! My God, it worked.

Every time I would begin thinking obsessionally --

스무 번의 전기충격요법 후에도

again, once more, after 20 shock treatments --

강박증이 다시 시작될 때 마다

I would say, "Ah, fuck it."

And things got better and better,

and within three or four months,

I was discharged from that hospital.

I joined a group of surgeons, where I could work with other people,

in a community, not in New Haven, but fairly close by.

I stayed there for three years.

At the end of three years, I went back to New Haven,

had remarried by that time.

I brought my wife with me, actually, to make sure I could get through this.

came back

to live with us.

We had two more children after that.

그러곤 두 명의 아이를 더 가졌죠

Resuscitated the career,

직장도 되찾았고, 오히려 전보다 더 나아졌구요.

even better than it had been before.

Went right back into the university

곧바로 대학으로 복귀해서

and began to write books.

책도 쓰기 시작했습니다.

Well, you know,

제 인생은 아름다웠습니다.

it's been a wonderful life.

It's been, as I said, close to 30 years.

수술대에 선 것이 거의 30년이 되었는데

I stopped doing surgery about six years ago

6년 전에 그만 두었고,

and became a full-time writer, as many people know.

다들 아시다시피 전문적인 작가가 되었습니다

But it's been very exciting. It's been very happy.

그러나 굉장히 흥미로웠고 기뻤습니다.

Every once in a while, I have to say, "Ah, fuck it."

가끔씩 요즘도 "아아, 씨발!"이라고 해야할 때가 있긴 합니다

Every once in a while, I get somewhat depressed and a little obsessional.

가끔씩 저는 우울해지고 약간 강박적으로 될 때도 있습니다

이 병에서 완전히 해방된 건 아니지만, 늘 그렇듯이 이겨냈죠.

So, I'm not free of all of this.

But it's worked. It's always worked.

Why have I chosen,

왜 제가 여태 한번도 한 적 없는, 이런 이야기를 할려고 마음먹었을까요?

after never, ever talking about this,

to talk about it now?

Well, those of you who know some of these books

제 책을 좀 아는 분들은 다들 아시다시피

know that one is about death and dying,

어떤 책은 죽음과 임종의 순간에 관한 것이고,

one is about the human body and the human spirit,

어떤 책은 사람의 신체와 영혼에 관한 것이고,

one is about the way mystical thoughts are constantly in our minds.

또 어떤 책은 어떻게 신비주의가 우리 마음속에 자리잡는가에 관한 것이고,

And they have always to do with my own personal experiences.

그 모든 책들은 제 개인 경험과 관련된 것들입니다.

One might think reading these books --

사람들은 이 책들을 읽으면서 이렇게 생각하겠죠.

and I've gotten thousands of letters about them

-- 사람들로부터 천 통이 넘는 편지를 받았고

by people who do think this --

다들 이런 생각을 하고 있는데요 --

that, based on my life's history as I portray it in the books,

책에 쓰여진 제 인생이야기를 토대로 하여 보면

my early life's history,

사람들은 제가 역경을 딛고 일어난 사람이라 생각할 것 입니다.

I am someone who has overcome adversity,

that I am someone who has drunk -- drank? -- drunk

그리고 제가 재앙에 가까운 유년기의

of the bitter dregs of near-disaster in childhood

쓰디 쓴 앙금을 맛 보았으면서도

and emerged not just unscathed but strengthened.

무너지지 않고 강인하게 딛고 일어섰다고 생각할 것 입니다.

I really have it figured out

저는 이기는 방법을 알았기 때문에 다른 사람에게

so that I can advise people about death and dying,

죽음과 임종에 대한 조언도 하고, 신비주의와 영혼에 대해 이야기 할 수 있습니다.

so that I can talk about mysticism

and the human spirit.

And I've always felt guilty about that.

저는 언제나 그것에 대해 죄책감을 느낍니다.

I've always felt that somehow I was an impostor,

제가 마치 사기꾼같이 느껴졌습니다.

because my readers don't know what I have just told you.

왜냐하면 독자들은 제가 오늘 들려드린 이야기를 모르기 때문이죠.

It's known by some people in New Haven, obviously,

but it is not generally known.

So one of the reasons that I have come here to talk about this today

But more importantly, I think,

is the fact that a very significant proportion of people in this audience

are under 30,

and there are many, of course, who are well over 30.

물론, 30세를 훌쩍 넘기신 분들도 계시지만요

For people under 30,

30세 이하의 사람들은, 제가 보기엔 거의 다가 그런 것 같은데요.

and it looks to me like almost all of you, I would say all of you,

are either on the cusp of a magnificent and exciting career

아주 대단하고 신나는 커리어에 막 들어서는 중이거나

or right into a magnificent and exciting career:

이미 들어서 있을지도 모릅니다.

anything can happen to you.

무슨 일이든 당신에게 일어날 수 있지요. 세상은 변화무쌍합니다.

Things change.

Accidents happen.

사고도 일어날 수 있고요. 유년기의 무언가가 당신 발목을 잡을 수도 있습니다.

Something from childhood comes back to haunt you.

You can be thrown off the track.

정상코스에서 이탈할 위험도 있죠.

I hope it happens to none of you,

이런 일들이 여러분에게 일어나지 않았으면 합니다

but it will probably happen to a small percentage of you.

그러나 여러분 중 일부에게는 일어날 지도 모르는 일이죠.

To those to whom it doesn't happen, there will be adversities.

그런 일이 일어나지 않는 분들은, 역경이 올 것입니다

If I, with the bleakness of spirit -- with no spirit --

만약 제가, 절망적이고

아무 의지도 없었던 그 1970년도에

that I had in the 1970s,

and no possibility of recovery

그 임원 의사들 생각대로

as far as that group of very experienced psychiatrists thought,

회복의 가능성이라고는 찾을 수 없는 상황에서도

if I can find my way back from this,

정상으로 돌아올 수 있는 길을 찾은 것 처럼

저를 믿으세요, 그 누구라도 그런 역경에서

believe me, anybody can find their way back

from any adversity that exists in their lives.

돌아오는 길을 찾을 수 있습니다.

And for those who are older,

who have lived through perhaps not something as bad as this,

그리고 나이가 좀 있으신 분들

제 경험만큼 끔찍하진 않은 역경을 이겨내신 분들

but who have lived through difficult times,

그러나 어려운 시간들을 보내보신 분들

perhaps where they lost everything, as I did,

아니면 저처럼 모든 것을 잃으신 분들

and started out all over again:

그리고 다시 시작하신분들에게는 제 이야기가 본인 경험들과 비슷하게 느껴질 것 입니다

some of these things will seem very familiar.

There is recovery.

회복할 방법은 있습니다

There is redemption.

구원은 있습니다. 그리고 부활도 있습니다.

And there is resurrection.

There are resurrection themes

지금까지 연구되어 왔던 모든 인간문화에는 부활의 테마가 있습니다.

in every society that has ever been studied,

and it is because not just only do we fantasize

이것은 우리가 구원과 부활의 가능성에 대한

about the possibility of resurrection and recovery,

환상을 가지기 때문만이 아니라

but it actually happens.

그것은 실제로 일어나는 일이기 때문입니다. 그리고 자주 일어납니다

And it happens a lot.

Perhaps the most popular resurrection theme,

종교구절들을 제외한

outside of specifically religious ones,

가장 유명한 부활이야기는 아마도

is the one about the phoenix, the ancient story of the phoenix,

불사조의 이야기일겁니다. 불사조에 대한 전설말이죠.

who, every 500 years,

불사조는 500년마다 자신의 재에서 부활하여

resurrects itself from its own ashes

to go on to live a life

그 전보다 더 아름다운 삶을

that is even more beautiful than it was before.

다시 산다고 합니다.
