Eight years ago, I was haunted by an evil spirit.

and I got this really spooky feeling,

kind of the feeling like you're being watched.

But no one was there except my two dogs,

and they were just chewing their feet.

And I looked around. No one was there.

And I thought, OK, it's just my imagination.

"아니야, 단순히 기분탓일거야." 하고 저는 생각했죠.

But the feeling just kept getting worse,

하지만 기분이 나아지기보단

and I started to feel this pressure in my chest,

오히려 가슴이 갑갑해지기 시작했습니다.

sort of like the feeling when you get bad news.

안 좋은 소식을 들었을 때 느끼는 그런 감정이라고 할까요.

But it started to sink lower and lower

계속 가슴이 갑갑해지니까

and almost hurt.

오히려 아픈듯한 느낌을 받았어요.

And over the course of that week, this feeling got worse and worse,

답답한 기분은 일주일간 계속 됐고 심해졌습니다.

and I started to become convinced that something was there

그래서 전 " 나를 괴롭히는 무언가가 이 집에 있구나" 라고

in my little guest house, haunting me.

확신이 들기 시작했죠.

And I started to hear these sounds,

게다가 이젠 환청까지 들리기 시작했답니다.

this "whoosh," kind of whisper, like something passing through me.

"휘익 쉬이" 하는, 무언가가 절 통과해가는 소리 같은 것이요.

I called my best friend, Claire, and said,

저는 친한 친구 클레어한테 전화를 해서 이렇게 말했죠.

"I know this is going to sound crazy,

클레어, "좀 미친 소리 같겠지만

but, um ...

근데, 음....

I think there's a ghost in my house, and I need to get rid of it."

우리집에 유령이 사는 거 같아. 어떻게 쫓아내지?"

And she said -- she's very open-minded -- and she said,

친구가 말하길, 참고로 그녀는 매우 열린 사고를 가진 친구랍니다.

"I don't think you're crazy.

"네가 미친 것 같진 않고

I think you just need to do a cleansing ritual."

그냥 "정화의식" 같은 거 하면 될거 같은데...

(Laughter)

(웃음)

"So get some sage and burn it,

"세이지 허브를 갖다가 태워버려.

and tell it to go away."

그리고 유령아 물러가라고 말해봐.

So I said, "OK," and I went and I bought sage.

"알았어" 하고, 전화 통화 후 저는 바로 세이지를 사러갔죠.

I had never done this before, so I set the sage on fire,

처음이었지만, 세이지에 불을 붙이고

waved it about, and said, "Go away! This is my house! I live here.

한들한들 날아가는 세이지를 향해 저는 "물러가라!" "여긴 우리집이라고!"

You don't live here!"

내가 주인이라고! 넌 나가줘!

But the feeling stayed. Nothing got better.

편안한 기분은 오래가지 않았고, 예전과 별반 다를게 없었죠.

And then I started to think,

그래서 저는 다시 고민하기 시작했습니다.

OK, well now this thing is probably just laughing at me,

because it hasn't left,

아직 나가지 않았거든요.

and I probably just look like this impotent, powerless thing

that couldn't get it to go away.

인간에 불과해 보였습니다.

So every day I'd come home

매일 집에 들어 올 때마다

and you guys, this feeling got so bad that -- I mean, I'm laughing at it now --

여러분, 그 기분은 정말 말로 설명이 안되며 다행히 지금은 웃지만

but I would sit there in bed and cry every night.

잠자리에 앉아, 매일밤 울었습니다.

And the feeling on my chest got worse and worse.

가슴을 누른 듯한 갑갑한 느낌은 더욱 시간이 갈수록 심해졌고

It was physically painful.

육체적으로 매우 힘들었었습니다.

And I even went to a psychiatrist

저는 정신과 상담도 받았습니다.

and tried to get her to prescribe me medicine,

전문의는 그냥 처방전을 주려 했지만

and she wouldn't just because I don't have schizophrenia, OK.

전문의가 말하기를 "정신 분열증은 아니네요", 전 "네 알겠네요" 이랬죠.

(Laughter)

So finally I got on the internet, and I Googled "hauntings."

결국 저는 인터넷으로 "유령출몰" 을 검색해봤죠.

And I came upon this forum of ghost hunters.

그리고 "퇴마사의 토론회"가 눈에 들어왔습니다.

But these were a special kind of ghost hunters --

그들은 조금 특별한 퇴마사들의 모임이었는데

they were skeptics.

회의론자들이었죠.

They believed that every case of ghosts that they had investigated so far

이들은 지금까지 접한 모든 유령의 사건들은

had been explained away by science.

과학으로 설명 가능하다고 하더군요.

And I was like, "OK, smart guys, this is what's happening to me,

그래서 저는 "그래요?" 그럼 저한테 이런 일이 일어났었는데...

and if you have an explanation for me, I would love to hear it."

설명 좀 해주시겠어요? 제가 너무 알고 싶어서 그래요.

And one of them said, "OK.

그 모임의 어느 분이 답변해주겠다고 하더라고요.

Um, have you heard of carbon monoxide poisoning?"

음.. 혹시 일산화탄소 중독이라고 들어보셨나요?

And I said, "Yeah.

그래서 저는 "물론이죠" 라고 말했어요.

Like, gas poisoning?"

가스 중독 같은 것 아닌가요?

Carbon monoxide poisoning is when you have a gas leak

일산화탄소 중독은 집안에 가스 누출이 됐을 때

leaking into your home.

발생하게 되는데요.

I looked it up, and the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning

검색해 보니까, 일산화탄소 중독으로 인한 증상으론

include a pressure on your chest,

가슴 압박과

auditory hallucinations -- whoosh --

환청, 예를 들면 휘익 쉬익 같은

and an unexplained feeling of dread.

그리고 알 수 없는 불안을 호소한다고 하네요.

So that night, I called the gas company.

그래서 전 바로 그날 밤 도시가스 회사에 전화를 했죠.

I said, "I have an emergency. I need you to come out.

그래서 저는 "응급상황이니, 우리집에 방문해달라고" 말을 했습니다.

I don't want to get into the story now, but I need you to come out."

"지금 긴 얘기 할 수 없는 상황이니까, 빨리 오세요"

(Laughter)

They came out. I said, "I suspect a gas leak."

저는 검사나온 가스회사 직원들에게 가스유출이 의심된다고 말했습니다.

They brought their carbon monoxide detector,

그들은 가스검출기를 가지고 왔고, 검사 후

and the man said,

그중에 한 남성분이 말씀하시더군요.

"It's a really good thing that you called us tonight,

because you could have been dead very soon."

Thirty-seven percent of Americans believe in haunted houses,

미국인의 37%는 실제 유령의 집이 있다고 믿고 있습니다.

and I wonder how many of them have been in one

그래서 저는 그중에 정말 유령의 집이 있는지

and how many of them have been in danger.

또 얼마 많은 곳들이 위험에 직면해 있는지 궁금해지더군요.

So that haunting story has led me to my job.

이런 이야기가 지금 저의 직업을 갖게 했습니다.

I'm an investigator, and I'm an investigator in two senses:

저의 직업은 조사관이며 두 가지 성격을 띠고 있습니다.

I'm an investigative journalist,

저는 탐사 언론인이며

and I'm also an investigator of the claims of the paranormal

더불어 불가사의하고 영적인 현상을 찾아다니는

and claims of the spiritual.

And that means a few things.

Sometimes that means that I'm pretending to need an exorcism

so I can get -- yes, that's right! -- so I can go to an exorcist

Sometimes that means I'm going undercover in a fringe group

which I report on for a podcast that I co-host.

And I've done over 70 investigations like this with my co-host, Ross.

I would love to tell you that nine times out of 10, science wins,

saves the day, it's all explained.

That's not true.

The truth is, 10 times out of 10, science wins, it saves the day.

10건 모두 과학으로 증명이 된다고 말씀드리고 싶습니다.

And that doesn't mean there's no such thing as a mystery.

그렇다고 불가사의한 현상이 없다는 건 아닙니다.

Of course there are mysteries, but a mystery is a mystery.

물론 불가사의한 현상은 있지만, 그냥 불가사의한 것일 뿐입니다.

It is not a ghost.

유령은 아니란거죠.

Now, I believe there are two kinds of truth,

현재, 저는 두가지 측면의 진실이 있다고 봅니다.

and it's taken me a while to get to this place, but I think this is right,

어떠한 사실에 도달을 했는데요. 나름 현명한 접근방법이라고 생각됩니다.

so hear me out.

한번 들어보세요.

I think there is outer truth and there's inner truth.

그건 바로 보이는 사실과 보이지 않는 사실이 있다는 겁니다.

So if you say to me,

예를 들면

"There was a man named Jesus and he once existed,"

예수라는 사람이 있었으며 존재했다.

that's outer truth, right?

이건 보이는 진실이죠.

And we can go and look at the historical record.

우리가 역사적 기록들을 보면

We can determine whether that seems to be true.

사실인지 아닌지, 우린 알 수 있습니다.

And I would argue, it does seem to be true.

제 생각에는 사실인 것 같습니다.

If you say, "Jesus rose from the dead," -- ooh, trickier.

그런데, 예수가 죽은 자를 살리셨다. 좀 난해하네...

(Laughter)

I would say that's an outer-truth claim,

이 부분도 저는 보이는 진실 같은데요.

because he physically rose or he didn't.

예수가 부활을 했는지 안했는지 알 수있기 때문이죠.

I'm not going to get into whether he rose or he didn't,

부활을 했는지 안했는지가 지금 중요하지 않고요.

but I would say that's an outer-truth claim.

하지만 이 질문은 보이는 진실이라고 생각됩니다.

It happened or it didn't happen.

일어났든, 일어나지 않았든 말이죠.

But if you say, "I don't care whether he rose from the dead.

만일 여러분이 "예수가 죽은 자를 살렸는지 아닌지는 중요치 않아.

It's symbolically important to me,

중요한건, 예수 자체가 상징적인것 뿐이야.

and that metaphor is so meaningful, so purposeful to me,

그런 비유만으로도 의미가 있어 혹은 목적의식을 갖게 해.

and I'm not going to try to persuade you of it,"

그리고 누군가를 막연히 이해시키고 싶진 않아" 라고 생각하신다면

now you've moved it from outer truth to inner truth,

이런 경우는 보이는 진실에서 보이지 않는 진실로 이동하는 겁니다.

from science to art.

과학에서 예술로 옮겨가는 겁니다.

And I think we have a tendency to not be clear about this,

저의 판단으로는 우리가 그런 부분을 명확히 구분짓지 않는 경향이 있어요.

to try to move our inner truths to outer truths,

보이지 않는 진실에서 보이는 진실로 넘어가는

or to not be fair about it to each other,

혹은 서로가 상충된 의견을 보이거나

and when people are telling us their inner truths,

예를 들면 누군가가 보이지 않는 진실을 말하게 되면

to try to make them defend them by outer-truth standards.

보이는 진실의 기준으로 그 부분들을 반박합니다

So I'm talking here about outer truth, about objective things.

저는 여기서 객관적인 것들과 보이는 진실에 대해서 말할까 합니다.

And there was an objective reality in my haunted house, right?

저의 유령의 집은 분명 객관적인 현실이었습니다.

Now that I've told you about the gas leak,

가스 누출이었다고 말씀 드렸는데

I doubt a single person here would be like,

분명 여러분중에 이렇게 생각하는 사람은 꼭 한 명씩은 있죠?

"I still think there was a ghost, too" --

난 여전히 유령이라고 생각되는데....

(Laughter)

(웃음)

because as soon as we have these scientific explanations,

과학적인 접근방법으로 다가가자

we know to give up the ghost.

유령의 행동이 아니란 걸 알게 됩니다.

We use these things as stopgaps for things that we can't explain.

설명할 수 없으면 우리 무조건 유령이라고 생각하게 됩니다.

We don't believe them because of evidence;

증거가 있기에 우리는 그것들을 믿지 않거나

we believe them because of a lack of evidence.

증거가 충분치 않다고 해서 우리는 객관적인 것들을 믿고 있습니다.

So there is a group in Los Angeles

로스앤젤레스에 한 모임이 있는데요.

called the Independent Investigations Group, or the IIG,

이른바 "자유 연구 모임", 약자로 "IIG"라고 부르는데요.

and they do great work.

그들은 대단한 일을 하고 있습니다.

They'll give a $10,000 prize

누군가가 불가사의한 능력을 보여주면

to anyone who can show, under scientific conditions,

상금으로 만 달러를 수여하는데요.

that they have a paranormal ability.

단, 과학적인 환경에서 그 능력을 보여줘야 합니다.

No one's done it yet,

아직은 아무도 보여주지 못했습니다.

but they've had a couple people who claim that they were clairaudients,

그래도 몇몇분중엔 초인적인 청력을 가졌다는 분들이 있었습니다.

which means that they can hear voices either from the great beyond

가령 사후세계의 목소리를 들을 수 있다거나

or they can read minds.

혹은 사람의 마음을 읽을 수 있다는 능력자도 있었다고 합니다.

And they had one person who was very sincere,

정말 사람의 마음을 읽을 수 있고

who believed that he could read minds.

그렇게 믿는 사람이 있었습니다.

So they set up a test with him, and this is the way it always works.

IIG는 그를 테스트를 했습니다. 그 테스트는 공신력이 있는데요.

The group says, "OK, we have a protocol,

전문 테스트 초안이 있어서, IIG는 그에게 허락을 구했습니다.

we have a way to scientifically test this.

우리는 과학적으로 테스트를 하고 싶은데요.

Do you agree with it?"

동의 하시겠어요?

The person says yes. Then they test it.

그는 동의했고, IIG 테스트를 했습니다.

It's very important that both sides agree.

양쪽 모두 동의를 하는 것이 매우 중요합니다.

They did that, they tested him.

They said, "OK, you know what?

You weren't able to predict what Lisa was thinking.

It matched up about the same as chance.

And that gave them the opportunity

you do hear something in your head."

And that guy got to make the very difficult decision,

but really the life-changing decision about whether to go get help.

We're actually helping people to make these connections

that maybe before seemed like otherworldly explanations,

help draw us into reality and maybe change our lives for the better.

Now, on the other hand, maybe one time it'll turn out to be true.

다른 한편으로는, 언젠가는 우리도 불가사의한 현상을 진실로 마주할 겁니다.

Maybe we'll find out there are ghosts,

그리고 유령의 존재를 알게 될 겁니다.

and holy shit, it will be the best thing!

대박, 그건 분명 최고일 겁니다.

And every time I do one of these investigations,

모든 조사를 할 때

I still get so excited,

지금도 너무 흥분되는데요.

and I'm like 75 into them,

제가 75번째 조사할 때

and still I swear on number 76, I'm going to be like, "This is the one!"

마음속으로 "제발 76번째 조사는 진실이었으면 좋겠다."

Maybe I'm just eternally optimistic, but I hope I never lose this hope,

and I invite you to take this same attitude

여러분이 그런 사람들과 불가사의한 이야기를 나눌 때

when people share their outer beliefs with you.

저와 같은 마음으로 그들을 바라 보셨으면 좋겠습니다.

When talking about testable claims,

검사해 볼 수 있는 주장들을 이야기 할 때

respect them enough to ask these good questions.

그들이 가지고 있는 신념을 평가할 수 있게 충분히 존중해 주세요.

Challenge and see how you can examine them together,

어떻게 하면 그들과 함께 조사하고, 논의를 할 수있지 노력해 주세요.

because there's this idea that you can't respect a belief

물론, 존중 그리고 대화할 수 없는 견해와 마주하기 마련입니다.

and still challenge it, but that's not true.

그렇다고 해서 그것이 사실이 될 수는 없죠.

When we jiggle the lock, when we test the claim,

설득을 해서, 테스트 할 때

we're saying, OK, I respect you, I'm listening to what you're saying,

저희는 "당신을 존중해요, 당신의 말에 귀기울이고 있어요." 라고 말합니다.

I'm going to test it out with you.

저는 당신과 함께 그것을 증명해 보려고 해요.

We've all had that experience where you're telling someone something,

누군가와 대화할 때 이런 경험 한번씩 해보잖아요.

and they're like, "Oh, that's really interesting, yeah,"

"오 참 흥미롭군요..네네"

you know you're being had.

그때 느끼는 기분 다 알잖아요.

But when someone says, "Really? Huh.

또 어떤 사람들은 이런 반응 보이죠, "정말로요? 흠..

Sounds a little sketchy to me, but I'm listening,"

좀 말은 안되지만, 계속 말해봐요"

you at least know you're being engaged and respected.

적어도 상대방이 귀를 기울이는지 존중해주는지 알잖아요.

And that's the kind of attitude we should have with these claims.

그런 주장들을 들을 때도, 앞서 제가 말한 그런 태도를 보여야 합니다.

That's showing someone that you care what they're saying.

비록 그들이 그런 이야기를 해도 경청하는 자세를 보여야 합니다.

That's respect.

그런게 존중이죠.

Now, yes, most of these searches will come up empty,

지금으로선 대부분의 조사는 별소득이 없을 겁니다.

but that's how all of science works.

과학으로 모두 증명된다는 말입니다.

Every cure for cancer so far has not panned out,

현재로써 암을 치유할 수 있는 방법도 더이상 진행하지 못하게 하는 겁니다.

but we don't stop looking,

두 가지 이유 때문에

for two reasons.

우리는 간과할 수 없습니다.

Because number one, the answer matters.

첫 번째는, 해결책이 중요합니다.

Whether it's looking at the afterlife or the paranormal or the cure for cancer,

사후세계나, 불가사의의 현상과 심지어 암 치료법을 찾든지 간에

it all amounts to the same question:

모두 같은 질문에 직면하게 됩니다.

How long will we be here?

언제까지 우리가 살게 될까 입니다.

And two, because looking for the truth,

두 번째는, 진실을 찾는다는 것은

being open-minded,

열린 마음을 갖고 있어야 합니다.

and being willing to be wrong and to change your whole worldview

기꺼이 잘못을 받아들이거나, 본인의 세계관을 변화시키는 것은

is awe-inspiring.

I still get excited at ghost stories every single time.

저는 유령이야기 할 때마다 여전히 흥분을 감출수 없는데요.

I still consider that every group I join might be right,

제가 속해 있는 조직이 다 옳다고 생각되지만

and I hope I never lose that hope.

여전히 불가사의한 현상의 존재를 믿고 싶습니다.

Let's all never lose that hope,

우리 모두 그런 가능성 항상 열어두자고요.

because searching for what's out there

무언가의 존재를 찾는다는 것은

helps us understand what's in here.

우리가 지금 살고 있는 현재를 이해하는데 도움을 주기 때문입니다.

And also, please have a carbon monoxide detector in your home.
