Many parents face tough questions

많은 부모들은 해결하기 어려운 문제들과

곤란한 상황에 직면합니다.

and tough decisions.

Shall we tell our child about the sperm donation?

만약 기증된 정자로 아이를 낳았다면 아이에게 그 사실을 털어놓아야 할까요?

If so, when?

그렇다면, 언제하면 좋을까요?

어떻게 얘기해야 할까요?

What words to use?

Sperm donors are often referred to as "biological fathers,"

사람들은 때때로 정자 기증자를

"생물학적 아버지"라 말합니다.

but should we really be using the word "father?"

그런데 정말 "아버지"라고 말할 수 있을까요?

As a philosopher and social scientist,

저는 철학자이자 사회과학자로서

I have been studying these questions about the concept of parenthood.

오늘은 기증 정자로 임신한 부모와 그 사이에 태어난 자녀들을 면담하며

But today, I will talk to you about what I learned

from talking to parents and children.

알게 된 사실들을 말씀드릴게요.

I will show you that they know what matters most in a family,

참가한 가족들마다 상황은 달랐지만 그들이 가장 소중히 여겼던 가치가

even though their family looks a little different.

무엇이었는지 말씀드리겠습니다.

가족간에 발생한 갈등을 어떻게 극복했는지 알려드리겠습니다.

I will show you their creative ways of dealing with tough questions.

But I will also show you the parents' uncertainties.

또한 참가 부모들이 어떤 불안감을 가지고 있는지 말씀드리려고 해요.

We interviewed couples

저희는 겐트 대학병원에서 불임치료를 받은 부부들을 면담했습니다.

who received fertility treatment at Ghent University Hospital,

기증 정자로 임신한 부부들이었어요.

using sperm from a donor.

In this treatment timeline,

보시는 불임치료 과정에서

you can see two points at which we conducted interviews.

면담은 이들 두 시점에서 이루어졌습니다.

We included heterosexual couples,

실험에 참여한 남녀 부부는

몇몇 이유로 남성의 정자 상태가 좋지 못한 경우였고

where the man for some reason did not have good-quality sperm,

and lesbian couples who obviously needed to find sperm elsewhere.

또한 임신을 위해 정자를 기증받은 레즈비언 커플도 참여했습니다.

We also included children.

물론 참가 부부의 자녀도 면담에 포함시켰습니다.

I wanted to know

제가 알고 싶었던 것은

how those children define concepts like parenthood and family.

그 자녀들이 자신의 부모와 가족의 의미를 어떻게 정의하는가였습니다.

사실 그것이 면담 목적이었지만

In fact, that is what I asked them,

only not in that way.

그렇다고 무턱대고 질문을 하진 않았습니다.

I drew an apple tree instead.

대신에 저는 아이들에게 사과나무를 그려줬어요.

이 방법을 통해서 추상적이고 철학적인 질문을 할 수 있었습니다.

This way, I could ask abstract, philosophical questions

in a way that did not make them run off.

아이들이 면담을 피하지 않도록 하면서도 말이죠.

So as you can see,

보시다시피 사과나무는 비어 있습니다.

the apple tree is empty.

And that illustrates my research approach.

위 그림은 제 연구 접근방식을 여실히 보여주고 있습니다.

By designing techniques like this,

이런 기법을 통해서

I can bring as little meaning and content as possible to the interview,

면담 과정에서 의미있는 답변을 이끌어 낼 수 있었습니다.

because I want to hear that from them.

아이들의 생각을 듣기 위한 것이죠.

I asked them:

먼저 이렇게 질문합니다.

What would your family look like if it were an apple tree?

만일 가족이 사과나무라면 나무는 어떤 모습일까?

And they could take a paper apple for everyone who, in their view,

그럼 그 아이들은 평소에 생각하는 가족 구성원의 수만큼

was a member of the family,

종이로 만든 사과를 고르고

write a name on it and hang it wherever they wanted.

각 사과마다 이름을 적은 뒤에 나무 안 원하는 곳에 매달아 두죠.

And I would ask questions.

그러면 저는 사과의 의미를 물어봅니다.

대부분의 아이들은 부모나 형제를 제일 먼저 설명합니다.

Most children started with a parent or a sibling.

One started with "Boxer,"

조부모가 키우던 강아지 "복서"를 가장 먼저 설명한 아이도 있었습니다.

the dead dog of his grandparents.

At this point, none of the children started mentioning the donor.

그런데 아이들 중 어느 누구도 정자를 기증한 사람은 얘기하지 않았죠.

So, I asked them about their birth story.

그래서 아이들에게 어떻게 태어났는지를 물었습니다.

"네가 태어나기 전에 엄마와 아빠만 있었거나

I said, "Before you were born,

it was just your mom and dad,

or mom and mommy.

아니면 엄마와 엄마만 있었는데

Can you tell me how you came into the family?"

어떻게 네가 태어나 가족이 됐는지 설명해줄래?"

And they explained.

아이들은 이야기하기 시작합니다.

One said,

한 아이가 이런 대답을 했죠.

"My parents did not have good seeds,

"저희 부모님은 좋은 씨앗이 없었어요.

but there are friendly men out there who have spare seeds.

그런데 세상 어딘가에 씨앗을 가진

친절한 남성분이 계셨어요.

They bring them to the hospital,

그분들은 좋은 씨앗들을 병원으로 가지고 와서

and they put them in a big jar.

큰 항아리에 넣었고

My mommy went there,

엄마는 병원으로 가서

and she took two from the jar,

항아리에서 씨앗 두 개를 꺼냈어요.

one for me and one for my sister.

하나는 제 것이고, 하나는 여동생 것이었죠.

She put the seeds in her belly --

엄마는 뱃속에 씨앗을 넣었고

그런데 갑자기

somehow --

and her belly grew really big,

엄마의 배가 정말 커졌고

and there I was."

거기에 제가 있었어요."

Hmm.

흠..

아이들이 기증자에 대해 말하기 시작하면

So only when they started mentioning the donor,

I asked questions about him, using their own words.

저는 그 아이들 표현을 빌려서 이렇게 질문을 이어갔습니다.

I said,

"씨앗이 있는 친절한 남자분을

"If this would be an apple for the friendly man with the seeds,

사과로 표현한다면 어떻게 하겠니?"

what would you do with it?"

한 사내 아이가 사과를 들고 혼잣말처럼 말하더라고요.

And one boy was thinking out loud,

holding the apple.

And he said,

이렇게 말했죠.

"I won't put this one up there with the others.

"전 이걸 다른 사과들과 함께 붙이지 않을 거예요.

He's not part of my family.

저희 가족의 일부가 아니에요.

But I will not put him on the ground.

그렇지만 땅에 두지도 않을 거예요.

That's too cold and too hard.

그곳은 너무 차갑고 딱딱하거든요.

제 생각엔 그분은 나무의 몸통 같아요.

I think he should be in the trunk,

because he made my family possible.

우리가 가족이 되도록 해주었으니까요.

If he would not have done this,

그 분이 그런 일을 하지 않았더라면

that would really be sad because my family would not be here,

정말 슬펐을 거예요.

우리 가족은 여기 없었을테고

and I would not be here."

나도 지금 여기 없었을 거예요."

So also, parents constructed family tales --

부모 또한 가족 이야기를 만들어서

tales to tell their children.

아이들에게 들려줍니다.

One couple explained their insemination

어느 한 부부는 인공수정을 설명하려고

by taking their children to a farm

농장으로 아이들을 데려갔습니다.

to watch a vet inseminate cows.

젖소의 인공수정을 돕는 수의사를 보여줬어요.

And why not?

어떤가요?

이것은 그들만의 설명 방식이었어요.

It's their way of explaining;

their do-it-yourself with family narratives.

그들의 가족 이야기를 만들어낸 것이죠.

DIY.

스스로 찾은 방법입니다.

And we had another couple who made books --

어떤 부부는 책을 만들었어요.

a book for each child.

아이들 각자의 책을 만들었죠.

They were really works of art

그 책은 정말 예술 작품이에요.

containing their thoughts and feelings throughout the treatment.

책에는 불임치료 기간 동안 느꼈던 부부의 생각과 감정을 담고 있었어요.

They even had the hospital parking tickets in there.

심지어 병원 주차권까지 들어있었죠.

So it is DIY:

이것도 스스로 찾은 방법입니다.

finding ways, words and images

적절한 방법과 표현, 그림을 찾아서

to tell your family story to your child.

아이들에게 들려 줄 가족 이야기를 만든 것이죠.

And these stories were highly diverse,

그 이야기들은 매우 다양하지만

but they all had one thing in common:

한 가지 공통점이 있었습니다.

it was a tale of longing for a child

그 이야기들은 아이를 너무나 원했던 부모들이

and a quest for that child.

아이를 얻으려 모헙을 떠나는 내용이었죠.

It was about how special and how deeply loved their child was.

그 이야기들은

아이들을 얼마나 소중하고 사랑스럽게 여기는지에 대한 내용이었습니다.

지금까지의 연구에서는 아이들도 잘 성장하는 것으로 나타났습니다.

And research so far shows that these children are doing fine.

They do not have more problems than other kids.

다른 아이들과 비교해서 문제를 일으키지도 않았죠.

Yet, these parents also wanted to justify their decisions

네. 실험에 참여한 부모들은

아이들에게 그 가족 이야기를 들려주며 자신들의 결정을 설명하고 싶었습니다.

through the tales they tell.

They hoped that their children would understand their reasons

가족을 만들기 위해 왜 이 방법을 선택했는지를

for making the family in this way.

자녀가 이해해주기 바라고 있었죠.

Underlying was a fear that their children might disapprove

그 부모들이 걱정했던 부분은

아이가 자신들을 유전적으로 관련이 없는 부모라며 거부할지 모른다는 것이었어요.

and would reject the non-genetic parent.

And that fear is understandable,

그런 두려움을 갖는 게 이해가 됩니다.

우리 사회는 이성애 규범이 지배하고 있고

because we live in a very heteronormative

유전적 가족 관계를 중요시하기 떄문이죠.

and geneticized society --

a world that still believes

아직도 이 세상은 진정한 가족이란

that true families consist of one mom, one dad

한 어머니와 한 아버지, 그리고

그 사이에서 유전적 관계로 태어난 아이들로 구성된다고 믿으니까요.

and their genetically related children.

Well.

글쎄요.

한 10대 소년의 이야기를 들려드리겠습니다.

I want to tell you about a teenage boy.

He was donor-conceived but not part of our study.

그 아이는 기증정자로 태어났지만 저희 연구에 참여하진 않았죠.

One day, he had an argument with his father,

어느 날, 소년은 아버지와 말다툼을 하다가

and he yelled,

이렇게 소리쳤습니다.

"You're telling me what to do?

"왜 이래라 저래라 하시죠?

You're not even my father!"

당신은 제 아버지도 아니잖아요!"

That was exactly what the parents in our study feared.

바로 이런 것이 연구에 참여한 부모들이 두려워한 것이었어요.

Now, the boy soon felt sorry, and they made up.

소년은 곧 죄송한 마음이 들었고 그들은 다시 화해했죠.

But it is the reaction of his father that is most interesting.

그런데 더 흥미로웠던 것은 아버지의 반응이었습니다.

아버지가 말하길

He said,

"This outburst had nothing to do with the lack of a genetic link.

"아이가 그렇게 행동한 건

우리 사이에 유전적 연결 고리가 없는 것과는 전혀 관계없어요.

It was about puberty --

아이가 지금 사춘기라서 그래요.

어려운 시기죠.

being difficult.

It's what they do at that age.

그 나이 때 아이들은 원래 그렇잖아요.

It will pass."

무사히 지나갈 겁니다."

What this man shows us

이 사례는 우리에게 교훈을 전해줍니다.

is that when something goes wrong,

가족 내에서 문제가 생겼을 때

we should not immediately think

우리 가족이 남들과 다르기 때문이라고 생각해서는 안 된다는 것입니다.

it is because the family is a little different.

These things happen in all families.

어느 가족에게나 이런 일은 일어나죠.

And every now and then,

그럴 때마다

all parents may wonder:

모든 부모들이 궁금해 합니다.

Am I a good enough parent?

나는 정말 좋은 부모일까?

이들 부모들도 그렇습니다.

These parents, too.

아이들을 위해 최선을 다하려 하죠.

They, above all, wanted to do what's best for their child.

But they also sometimes wondered:

또 가끔은 이런 생각도 합니다.

내가 아이들의 진짜 부모일까?

Am I a real parent?

And their uncertainties were present long before they even were parents.

그들은 부모가 되기 훨씬 전부터 이런 불안감을 갖고 있습니다.

At the start of treatment,

그래서 불임치료를 시작할 때는 먼저 전문 상담사와 면담을 하게 되죠.

when they first saw the counselor,

상담사의 조언을 꼼꼼하게 경청합니다.

they paid close attention to the counselor,

because they wanted to do it right.

신중을 기하기 위해서죠.

Even 10 years later,

상담을 받은 지 10년이 넘어도

부부들은 당시의 조언을 기억합니다.

they still remember the advice they were given.

So when they thought about the counselor

상담을 언제부터 고려했는지와

and the advice they were given,

상담사의 조언 내용에 대해서

we discussed that.

연구 참가자들과 토론하던 중에

And we saw one lesbian couple who said,

한 레즈비언 부부가 이런 말을 했죠.

"When our son asks us,

"우리 아들이 저희에게

'Do I have a dad?'

'제게 아버지가 있나요?'라고 물으면

we will say 'No, you do not have a dad.'

'아니, 없단다.'라고 말할 거예요.

But we will say nothing more, not unless he asks,

아이가 더 묻지 않는다면 저희는 굳이 답하지 않을 거예요.

because he might not be ready for that.

아이에겐 아직 이해하기 어려울 수 있으니까요.

The counselor said so."

상담사도 그렇게 하라고 했어요."

Well.

글쎄요.

아마도 아이들이 알고 싶어하는 것과

I don't know; that's quite different

부모의 대답이 전혀 다를 수도 있을 겁니다.

from how we respond to children's questions.

Like, "Milk -- is that made in a factory?"

이를테면 "우유는 공장에서 만들어져요?"라고 물으면

We will say, "No, it comes from cows,"

이렇게 대답하겠죠.

"아니, 우유는 젖소가 만드는 거란다."

and we will talk about the farmer,

그러면서 우린 농부에 대해 설명하고

and the way the milk ends up in the shop.

우유가 가게까지 온 과정을 알려주겠죠.

We will not say,

이렇게 대답하지는 않죠.

"아니, 공장에서 우유를 만들지 않는단다."

"No, milk is not made in a factory."

아이와 부모가 이렇게 다릅니다.

So something strange happened here,

and of course these children noticed that.

물론 아이들은 부모의 진심을 알아차렸을 거예요.

One boy said,

이런 말을 한 아이도 있었습니다

"I asked my parents loads of questions,

"부모님에게 많은 것을 여쭤봤는데요.

but they acted really weird.

그때마다 조금 수상쩍게 행동하셨어요.

So, you know, I have a friend at school, and she's made in the same way.

그래서 말이죠.

학교 친구 중에 나처럼 정자 기증을 받아 태어난 여자 아이가 있는데요.

When I have a question, I just go and ask her."

궁금한 게 있으면 그 아이에게 묻곤 해요."

Clever guy.

현명하지 않아요?

Problem solved.

간단히 해결됐네요.

But his parents did not notice,

그렇지만 부모는 몰랐어요.

and it certainly was not what they had in mind,

이런 돌발상황은 예상했던 것도 아니고

nor what the counselor had in mind

상담사도 예상하지 못했을 거예요.

when they were saying how important it is to be an open-communication family.

이 사례는 가족 간의 소통이 얼마나 중요한지를 보여줍니다.

And that's the strange thing about advice.

그런데 조언에는 종종 변수가 있어요.

When we offer people pills, we gather evidence first.

이를테면 약을 처방해 주려면 약의 효능을 먼저 알아야 하죠.

We do tests,

실험을 하고

we do follow-up studies.

후속 연구도 합니다.

이 약이 어떤 효과가 있는지 정확히 알아야 하기 때문이죠.

We want to know, and rightly so, what this pill is doing

사람의 생명에 어떤 영향을 미치는지도 알아야 하고요.

and how it affects people's lives.

그런데 조언의 경우는요?

And advice?

It is not enough for advice,

조언으로는 충분하지 않아요.

or for professionals to give advice that is theoretically sound,

전문가가 이론적으로 알맞은 조언을 하고

or well-meant.

의미있는 조언을 하더라도 말이죠.

It should be advice that there is evidence for --

조언에는 타당한 근거가 있어야 해요.

evidence that it actually improves patients' lives.

실제로 환자들의 삶을 향상시킬 수 있는지가 입증되어야 하죠.

저는 철학자로서 역설적인 제안을 하나 하고자 합니다.

So the philosopher in me would now like to offer you a paradox:

I advise you to stop following advice.

조언을 무작정 따르지는 마세요.

But, yes.

어쨌든, 그래요.

I will not end here with what went wrong;

물론, 조언을 따르는 것이 잘못됐다는 것은 아닙니다.

I would not be doing justice to the warmth we found in those families.

그 가족을 대상으로 저희가 알아낸 것들이 옳다고도 할 수 없고요.

Remember the books and the trip to the farmer?

아이들을 위한 책 제작과 농장 견학을 말씀드렸죠?

When parents do things that work for them,

아이들을 위해 그렇게 하는 것은

they do brilliant things.

아주 현명한 방법이에요.

What I want you to remember as members of families,

한가지 기억해 주셨으면 합니다.

가족의 일원으로서

그 가족이 어떤 방법으로 이루어졌는가 하는 것보다

in no matter what form or shape,

is that what families need are warm relationships.

결속력있는 따뜻한 유대감을 갖는 것이 중요합니다.

And we do not need to be professionals to create those.

여기에는 전문가가 필요하지 않습니다.

Most of us do just fine,

누구나 잘 해낼 수 있습니다.

although it may be hard work,

물론 쉽지만은 않아요.

적절한 조언이 있다면 더 잘 해낼 수 있겠죠.

and from time to time, we can do with some advice.

In that case,

그럴 경우에는

bear in mind three things.

세 가지를 마음에 새기세요.

Work with advice that works for your family.

여러분의 가족에 맞는 조언을 적용하세요.

여러분의 가족 문제에 관한 전문가는 여러분 자신임을 기억하세요.

Remember -- you're the expert, because you live your family life.

And finally,

마지막으로

believe in your abilities and your creativity,

여러분의 능력과 참신함을 믿어 보세요.

여러분은 잘 해낼 수 있으니까요.

because you can do it yourself.
