I have a few pictures,

and I'll talk a little bit about how I'm able to do what I do.

All these houses are built

from between 70 and 80 percent recycled material,

And then these buttons on the corbels here --

those are hickory nuts.

And these buttons there --

those are chicken eggs.

Of course, first you have breakfast,

and then you fill the shell full of Bondo and paint it and nail it up,

and you have an architectural button in just a fraction of the time.

I got that staircase for 20 dollars,

Then, looking up in the turret,

you see there are bulges and pokes and sags and so forth.

This is a bathtub I made,

Started with the rim, and then glued and nailed it up into a flat,

corbeled it up and flipped it over,

then did the two profiles on this side.

After all, it's not just a question of hygiene,

Then, this faucet here is just a piece of Osage orange.

This is a house based on a Budweiser can.

It doesn't look like a can of beer,

but the design take-offs are absolutely unmistakable:

the barley hops design worked up into the eaves,

then the dentil work comes directly off the can's red, white, blue and silver.

So we changed that and put,

and so forth and so on.

This is a deadbolt.

It's a fence from a 1930s shaper, which is a very angry woodworking machine.

And they gave me the fence, but they didn't give me the shaper,

The shower is intended to simulate a glass of beer.

Then, another bathroom upstairs.

is the same light that occurs in every middle-class foyer in America.

Then, somebody gave me a bidet, so it got a bidet.

This little house here,

those branches there are made out of Bois d'arc or Osage orange.

These pictures will keep scrolling as I talk a little bit.

In order to do what I do,

you have to understand what causes waste in the building industry.

Our housing has become a commodity,

and I'll talk a little bit about that.

But the first cause of waste is probably even buried in our DNA.

Human beings have a need for maintaining consistency

What you're doing

That's how we process information.

You translate that to the building industry.

If we have a wall of windowpanes and one pane is cracked, we go,

Because that's what you do with a cracked pane.

유리에 금간것이 우리 생활에는 아무 영향을 주지 않는 다는것은 무시해 버리지요.

Never mind that it doesn't affect our lives at all.

It only rattles that expected pattern and unity of structural features.

우리가 기대했던 구조와

전체의 통일성을 깰 뿐입니다.

However, if we took a small hammer,

다른 모든 유리판에 금을 가게 하면

and we added cracks to all the other windows --

(Laughter)

then we have a pattern.

Because Gestalt psychology emphasizes recognition of pattern

Now there's a blight on the planet.

It's a chattel mortgage,

You write the check, and instantly, it depreciates 30 percent.

Then when they degrade, what do you do with them?

It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. We can't get out of it.

Then here come the marketeers and the advertisers.

또 광고와 판매꾼들이 옵니다.

"Woo. Woo-hoo."

"와, 과연!!!"

We buy stuff we didn't know we needed.

우리에게 필요 한지도 몰랐던 것들을 삽니다.

All we have to do is look at what one company did

한 회사가 말린 자두 쥬스를

탄산화 음료로 판매 한 것을 보십시요.

with carbonated prune juice.

구역질 나네요.

How disgusting.

(Laughter)

But you know what they did?

그들이 무엇을 했는지 아세요? 그들은 비유 하나를 집어넣어

They hooked a metaphor into it and said, "I drink Dr. Pepper ..."

"나는 닥터 페퍼를 마신다" 했습니다.

And pretty soon, we're swilling that stuff by the lake-ful,

by the billions of gallons.

It doesn't even have real prunes! Doesn't even keep you regular.

And we get sucked into that faster than anything.

Then, a man named Jean-Paul Sartre wrote a book

책을 썼습니다.

titled "Being and Nothingness."

빨리 읽을수 있는 책이지요.

It's a pretty quick read. You can snap through it in maybe --

매일 8 시간씩 읽으면

maybe two years,

2년이면 끝낼것입니다.

if you read eight hours a day.

In there, he talked about the divided self.

그 책은 분리된 자아에 대해 말합니다.

그는 인간이 혼자 있을 때와 다른사람들이 주변에 있을때

He said human beings act differently when they know they're alone

다르게 행동 한다고 합니다.

than when they know somebody else is around.

So if I'm eating spaghetti, and I know I'm alone,

I can eat like a backhoe.

삽으로 퍼먹는것 처럼 먹습니다.

I can wipe my mouth on my sleeve, napkin on the table,

냅킨은 탁자에 놓아두고, 소매로 입도 닦고

chew with my mouth open, make little noises,

입을 연채로 씹고, 소리도 내며

scratch wherever I want.

가려운데를 긁기도 합니다.

But as soon as you walk in,

그러나 누가 들어 오는 즉시

I go, "Oops! Lil' spaghetti sauce there."

저는 "어, 스파게티 소스 거기있네."

Napkin in my lap, half-bites,

chew with my mouth closed, no scratching.

입 다물고 씹으며, 긁기는 없지요.

Now, what I'm doing is fulfilling your expectations

이게 무엇인가 하면,

제가 어떻게 행동해야 한다는 여러분의

of how I should live my life.

기대에 맞추는 것이지요.

I feel that expectation,

and so I accommodate it,

That happens in the building industry as well.

건축 업계에서도 같은 일이 생깁니다.

That's why all subdivisions look the same.

우리의 동네들이 모두 같은 형태를 가지는 이유입니다.

Sometimes, we even have these formalized cultural expectations.

때로는 규격화된

문화적 기대도 있습니다.

I'll bet all your shoes match.

여러분들의 구두는 모두 짝이 맞지요?

Sure enough, we all buy into that ...

물론 이지요. 이와 같이 우리 모두는

지역 출입문이 있는 동네 에서는

And with gated communities,

집 주인 조합에 의한

we have a formalized expectation,

규칙화 된 기대치가 있습니다.

with a homeowners' association.

정말로 어떨때는 이들은

Sometimes those guys are Nazis,

my oh my.

나치와 같은 독재자들입니다.

That exacerbates and continues this model.

그 기대감이 이 모델을 악화 시키고 지속 시킵니다.

The last thing is gregariousness.

마지막으로 집단 본능입니다.

Human beings are a social species.

인간은 사회적 동물입니다.

We like to hang together in groups,

사자와 같은 야생 동물처럼

집단으로 거하기 원합니다.

just like wildebeests, just like lions.

야생 동물들은 사자들과 같이 지내지 않습니다.

Wildebeests don't hang with lions,

because lions eat wildebeests.

사자들이 먹어 버리니까요.

Human beings are like that.

인간들도 이와 같습니다.

We do what that group does

우리는 우리가 같이 하려고 하는

that we're trying to identify with.

무리가 하는대로 합니다.

You see this in junior high a lot.

중학교에서 많이 보게 되지요.

Those kids, they'll work all summer long -- kill themselves --

아이들이 여름내내 진이 빠지도록

열심히 일합니다.

so that they can afford one pair of designer jeans.

명품 디자이너 진 한벌

사기 위해서요.

So along about September,

9월이 다가오면

they can stride in and go,

자랑 스럽게 걸어가서

"I'm important today. See? Don't touch my designer jeans!

"내 명품 청바지를 보기만 하고 만지지는 말아.

나는 중요한 사람이야.

I see you don't have designer jeans.

너는 명품 청바지를 안입었네.

You're not one of the beautiful -- See, I'm one of the beautiful people.

그러니까 너는 끼지못해.

내 청바지를 봐, 나는 그룹에 끼는거야."

See my jeans?"

Right there is reason enough to have uniforms.

이것만 가지고도 교복을 입혀야 하는 이유가 충분히 됩니다.

And so that happens in the building industry as well.

건축업계에서도 같은 일이 일어납니다.

We have confused Maslow's hierarchy of needs,

우리는 매슬로우의

필요의 단계를 약간

오해한 것 같습니다.

just a little bit.

On the bottom tier, we have basic needs:

바닥에는 우리의

기초적인 필요가 있습니다--

shelter, clothing, food, water, mating and so forth.

Second: security. Third: relationships.

Fourth: status, self-esteem -- that is, vanity --

and we're taking vanity and shoving it down here.

And so we end up

with vain decisions,

and we can't even afford our mortgage.

We can't afford to eat anything except beans;

that is, our housing has become a commodity.

And it takes a little bit of nerve

to dive into those primal,

terrifying parts of ourselves

들어가서 우리 주거공간을

and make our own decisions

특징없는 상품이 아니라

and not make our housing a commodity,

우리의 기본에서 우러나오는 독특한

but make it something that bubbles up from seminal sources.

공간으로 만드려면, 용기가 좀 필요합니다.

That takes a little bit of nerve,

용기가 좀 필요한데

and, darn it, once in a while, you fail.

제기랄, 가끔 실패합니다.

But that's okay.

If failure destroys you,

then you can't do this.

I fail all the time, every day,

Early on, contractors come by and say,

"Dan, you're a cute little bunny,

but you know, this just isn't going to work.

이건 절대로 성공 못해. 이렇게 하지말고

What don't you do this? Why don't you do that?"

저렇게 하면 어때?" 라고 했습니다.

And your instinct is to say,

속에서 뛰쳐 나오는 답은,

"Well, why don't you suck an egg?"

"너나 잘 하세요." 입니다.

But you don't say that,

그러나 그들이 제가 팔려고 하는 대상이므로

because they're the guys you're targeting.

그렇게 말하지 않습니다.

And so what we've done --

그래서 우리들의 전략은 --

집에 관해서 만이 아니고,

and this isn't just in housing; it's in clothing and food

의류와 음식에서도

and our transportation needs, our energy --

또 교통 수단과 에너지 에서도

we sprawl just a little bit.

좀 뻗어 냅니다.

And when I get a little bit of press,

I hear from people all over the world.

온 세상 사람들에게서 연락이 옵니다.

And we may have invented excess,

but the problem of waste is worldwide.

We're in trouble.

And I don't wear ammo belts crisscrossing my chest

But we're clearly in trouble.

And what we need to do is reconnect

with those really primal parts of ourselves

and make some decisions and say,

"You know, I think I would like to put CDs across the wall there.

What do you think, honey?"

If it doesn't work, take it down.

아니라고 하면 떼어내세요.

What we need to do is reconnect with who we really are,

우리의 본질과 다시 연결하는 것이 필요하고

and that's thrilling indeed.
