So here we are.

I'm at home, as I'm sure many of you are, too.

And we've all begun to understand

how our relationship with ourselves,

with each other

and the spaces we exist in

can deeply impact our sense of identity and purpose.

So much has dramatically changed.

너무 많은 것들이 갑자기 바뀌었어요.

There's a sense of distance now unlike ever before.

이전에는 없었던 거리감이 생겨났고요.

But what if I told you

하지만 이러면 어떨까요?

that you could find a way from your heart to your hand

마음에서 손까지 다시 연결하는 방법을 찾고

to reconnect again,

and that through this practice and embracing this cause,

그걸 통해서 이렇게 된 원인을 받아들이는 거예요.

I could help you to recalibrate your mind

제가 도와드릴 테니 여러분 마음을 가다듬고

so that you could explore this new reality with joy,

새로운 현실 속으로 즐거운 모험을 떠나면 어떨까요?

enthusiasm, imagination and hope?

열정과 상상력, 그리고 희망을 갖고 떠나는 모험이요.

And all it would take is a simple pen.

필요한 건 오직 펜 한 자루뿐이에요.

To get you there,

방법을 말씀드리기 전에

let's go back to the beginning.

처음으로 돌아가봅시다.

As a kid growing up in a council estate in Southeast London,

런던 남동쪽의 공공임대 주택에서 어린 시절을 보낸 저는

I was an outsider.

이방인이었습니다.

저는 여섯 남매 중 장녀인데

I'm the oldest of six kids,

and all of my siblings look very English:

저희 남매들은 모두 영국인스럽게 생겼어요.

금발에 파란 눈을 가졌고 정말 귀여웠죠.

blond hair, blue eyes, very cute.

And then there was me:

그런데 저는 달랐어요.

half Nigerian, brown, with an Afro.

나이지리아 혼혈에 갈색 피부, 흑인의 곱슬머리였죠.

So what happens when you look different

그러면 어떻게 될까요?

생김새도 다르고

and you feel different,

남과 다르다고 느껴지고

and in many ways, start to think differently

내가 가진 사고방식도 달라서

from everyone and everything around you?

주변 사람들, 모든 것과 구별된다면요.

How do you find your way out of a dark, racist, homophobic

어둡고, 인종차별과 동성애 혐오가 난무하고

and very lonely place?

외로운 그 곳에서 어떻게 빠져나오겠어요?

This is where the pen comes in.

이제 여기서 펜 얘기가 나옵니다.

I started to draw.

저는 그림을 그리기 시작했어요.

So as you can see, I've got this pen,

보시는 것처럼 제가 가진 이 펜은 어디로 가야할지를 알아요.

and it knows where it's going.

And I've learned very well how to follow it.

그리고 저는 펜을 따라가는 법을 배웠죠.

And the first thing I did is I followed this line,

제가 처음으로 한 일은,

이 선을 따라서

and I drew myself out of a culture

제가 할 수 없는 것들만 얘기하는 문화로부터 벗어났습니다.

that was only telling me what I couldn't do.

I trusted my pen,

제 펜을 믿고 따라갔더니

and it led me to Central Saint Martin's,

센트럴 세인트 마틴까지 이르게 되었어요.

a very fancy art school in London,

런던에 있는 아주 세련된 미술대학인데

where I graduated top of my year.

제가 수석으로 졸업한 곳이죠.

However, I soon realized there wasn't a place for me in London,

하지만 곧 저는 런던에는 제가 설 곳이 없다는 걸 깨달았어요.

because whether you wish to believe it or not,

왜냐하면, 믿거나 말거나

England is still a country that is rooted and functions within

영국은 아직도 사회계급제도에 깊은 뿌리를 두고 움직이는 나라거든요.

the class system.

And as a young, black, gay female artist from a working-class family,

노동계층 출신에 어린 흑인 여성 동성애자 예술가였던 저는

I didn't stand a chance.

기회조차 잡을 수가 없었던 거죠.

So I left London and I moved to Japan,

그래서 런던을 떠나 일본으로 갔고

where I didn't experience people asking me where I was really from.

그곳 사람들은 제게 진짜 어디서 왔느냐고 묻지 않았어요.

I was just another gaijin,

저는 그냥 "가이징" 중 한 명일 뿐이었죠.

which, ironically, means "outsider."

아이러니하게도 그건 "이방인"이라는 뜻이에요.

I was immersed in a culture that honors both making and craft,

저는 제작과 공예를 존중하는 일본의 문화에 빠져들었습니다.

where people perfect their craft over generations.

일본 사람들은 여러 세대에 걸쳐 기술을 연마하고 완성시키죠.

It's a culture that masters both time and space,

예술가가 시공간을 연마해

so that artists can truly create with freedom.

진정으로 자유롭게 창조할 수 있는 문화입니다.

And what I discovered was a place I wasn't angry with.

그리고 제가 발견한 것은 바로 저를 화나게 하지 않는 곳이었죠.

Tokyo hadn't wronged me in any way.

도쿄는 제게 잘못한 게 하나도 없었어요.

I could no longer create with anger

저는 더 이상 분노의 감정이나 아픔으로부터 창작할 수 없었습니다.

or out of pain.

I had to bravely allow myself to create from a different place.

완전히 다른 곳에서 창작할 수 있게 제 자신을 풀어줘야 했지요.

And what I found is this incredible tool

그리고 제가 발견한 건

종이 위의 선을 넘어서는 놀라운 도구였습니다.

transcended a line on paper.

I found this thing

제가 찾은 그 도구는

that connected my head to my heart

제 머리와 심장을 이어주고

and my hand to everything.

제 손과 모든 것들을 이어주었죠.

I could see the world in new ways.

세상을 새롭게 볼 수 있게 되었습니다.

I found connections in corners

여기저기서 연결점을 찾았고

그전까지 전혀 알지 못했던 문제에 대한 해결책을 찾았습니다.

and the solutions to problems I never knew existed.

It's like the world with all its positive and negative spaces

마치 음의 공간과 양의 공간을 가진 세상이

could now be seen.

이제 보이는 것 같았어요.

And just by seeing it,

보는 것만으로도

there was no longer any fear.

두려움이 사라졌습니다.

It's like my pen was a flashlight,

마치 펜이 손전등인 것 같았어요.

and the unknown was still there,

알 수 없는 무언가가 아직 존재하지만

but it wasn't scary.

이제 무섭지 않았습니다.

After five years of living in Japan and focusing on my craft,

일본에서 살며 제 작업에 집중한지 5년이 됐을 때

I felt like I needed a new challenge.

저는 또 새로운 도전이 필요하다고 느꼈습니다.

So I moved to New York,

그래서 뉴욕으로 갔죠.

because that's what you do as an artist, right?

예술가라면 그래야 하잖아요?

You move to the greatest city in the world

세계에서 가장 멋진 도시,

that has the ability

완전히 투명인간이 될 수 있는 그런 도시로 이사를 가는거죠.

to make you feel completely and utterly invisible.

This is when I began to truly ask myself,

이때 진정으로 제 자신에게 묻기 시작했습니다.

"Who are you?"

"넌 누구니?"라고요.

I would wake up in the morning, and before I began my day,

아침에 일어나서 하루를 시작하기 전

I would meditate on this.

이에 대해 명상을 하고는 했어요.

And with this question in mind,

그리고 마음 속에 이 질문을 품고

계속 그림을 그렸습니다.

I kept drawing.

I followed the line.

선을 따라서 그렸습니다.

I let it lead the way.

선이 저를 이끌도록 했습니다.

The process of picking up a pen,

펜을 집어드는 과정,

누구나 할 수 있는 그 행동으로

something everyone has access to,

the act of giving myself permission to let go

저는 모든 걸 내려놓을 수 있었습니다.

of all thoughts, all fears, insecurities --

모든 생각과 두려움, 불안함까지도요.

anything that would get in the way

진정한 나 자신을 찾는 걸 방해하는 모든 것들을요.

of allowing myself to be completely me --

that became my way of experiencing freedom.

이건 제가 자유를 경험하는 방법이 되었습니다.

When I got to New York,

뉴욕에 도착했을 때

I didn't want to play by the rules of the art world.

저는 예술 세계의 규칙에 따라 살고 싶지 않았어요.

I continued my practice as an outsider.

여전히 이방인으로 살았죠.

I kept drawing.

계속 그림을 그렸고요.

Curiosity became the ink for my pen,

호기심은 펜의 잉크가 되었고

and I continued to dive deeper.

저는 점점 더 깊이 파고들었습니다.

Over time, I began to create a bold, confident space for myself,

시간이 흐르면서 제 자신을 위한 대담하고 자신감 넘치는

a space that was all my own.

저만의 공간을 만들기 시작했습니다.

Initially, it was just my bedroom.

처음엔 제 침실이었습니다.

But that bedroom ended up in "The New York Times,"

그런데 그 침실이 뉴욕 타임즈에 실리게 되면서

and suddenly, I was being seen and known

제가 만든 이 세상이 갑자기 사람들에게 알려지게 되었죠.

for this world I had created.

Since then,

그 이후

I've created and collaborated with some of the most unique artists,

저는 독창적인 예술가들과 협업하여 예술단체와 작업 공간을 만들었습니다.

institutions and spaces,

from the screens of Times Square,

타임스퀘어의 전광판 전시에서부터

to the New York City Ballet for their incredible artist series,

뉴욕시티 발레단의 무용수들을 인터뷰하며

where I interviewed a number of dancers.

멋진 예술가 시리즈를 기획했죠.

Their stories and words became the foundation

그들의 이야기를 기반으로

of over 30 drawings and artworks,

30점이 넘는 그림과 예술작품이 탄생했고

which took over the promenade walls,

산책로와 창문, 바닥 곳곳에 전시되었습니다.

windows and floors.

For a long time,

오랫동안 저는 명상과 시를 위한 공간을 만들고 싶었습니다.

I wanted to create a space for contemplation and poetry.

And in 2019,

그리고 2019년에 그 기회가 주어졌죠.

I was given the opportunity to do just that

by the Trust of Governor's Island.

거버너스 아일랜드 조합 덕분에요.

They provided me with the perfect canvas

그들은 제게 완벽한 캔버스를 마련해주었습니다.

in the form of a former military chapel.

예전에 군사 예배당이었던 장소였죠.

Meet "The May Room."

"The May Room"이라는 작품입니다.

With drawings on the exterior inspired by the history of the island,

외벽에는 섬의 역사에서 영감을 받아 그린 그림이 있고

you walk inside, you take your shoes off,

안으로 들어가 신발을 벗고 보면

and there's a drawing on the floor in the form of a maze

미로 형태의 그림이 바닥에 그려져 있는데

that brings you back to you.

결국 돌아돌아 제자리로 오게 됩니다.

마치 차분해지라고 하는 것처럼요.

It's an invitation to become calm.

And this allows you to see phrases on the wall.

그러다보면 벽에 쓰여진 글귀가 보입니다.

"May you be wise."

"당신이 지혜로워지기를."

"May you sleep soundly at night."

"당신이 밤에 편안히 잠 들기를."

"May we save trees."

"우리가 나무를 살리길."

"May you," "may you," "may we."

"당신이, 당신이, 우리가 그렇길."

And these phrases seem like they're rising from you

이 글귀들은 자기로부터 나오거나

or falling into you.

자기 위로 떨어지는 것 같은 느낌을 줍니다.

I've let my lines become much like a language,

저는 선들이 마치 언어처럼 느껴지고

a language that has unfolded much like life.

인생이 펼쳐지는 것 같이 느껴지게 했어요.

And when there has been silence,

그리고 침묵이 드리울 때면

I've sought connection through conversation,

대화를 통해 연결점을 찾았습니다.

asking questions to push through the discomfort.

불편함을 뚫고 지나갈 수 있게 질문을 하면서요.

Drawing has taught me how to create my own rules.

그림은 제게 나만의 규칙을 만드는 법을 가르쳐주었습니다.

It has taught me to open my eyes to see not only what is,

이게 무엇인지뿐만 아니라 무엇이 될 수 있는지도 볼 수 있도록

but what can be.

눈을 뜨게 해주었어요.

And where there are broken systems,

체계가 무너진 곳에서

we can create new ones that actually function and benefit all,

우리는 모두에게 이로운 새로운 체계를 만들 수 있습니다.

instead of just a select few.

엄선된 소수의 사람에게만 제한된 것이 아니라요.

Drawing has taught me how to fully engage with the world.

그림은 제게 어떻게 세상과 온전히 교류할 수 있는지 가르쳐 주었고

And what I've come to realize through this language of lines

제가 선이라는 언어를 통해 깨달은 것은

is not the importance of being seen,

보여지는 것이 중요한 게 아니라

but rather the gift of seeing that we give to others

타인에게 주는 시각적 선물과

and how true freedom is the ability to see.

볼 수 있다는 것이 얼마나 진정한 자유로운 선물인가 하는 것이었죠.

And I don't mean that literally,

글자 그대로만 의미하는 것은 아니에요.

because sight is only one way in which one can see.

시각이란건 우리가 볼 수 있는 한 가지 방법일 뿐이니까요.

But what I mean is to experience the world in its entirety,

하지만 제가 얘기하고자 하는 건 세상을 온전히 경험하는 거예요.

maybe even more so during the most challenging moments

어려운 상황 속에서는 더욱 더 그래야 하죠.

like the one we face today.

우리가 직면하고 있는 바로 지금 같은 상황에서요.
