a small group of us got together

And that's the journey I'd like to share with you now.

The starting hypothesis was one of the human mind and body,

which, as you've seen for the last few days here,

is an amazing construct.

What if you augmented that wonderful machine

그 경이로운 구조를 적절한 기술을 이용해서

강화할 수 있다면 어떨까요?

with just the right technology?

If you approach flight in that kind of real way,

실제 그러한 방식으로 비행한다면 어디까지 갈 수 있을까요?

where could you get to?

So my training partner here back in London, Denton,

여기 제 트레이닝 파트너인 덴톤은

is doing a much better job of that kind of stuff than me.

이런 종류의 일을 저보다 훨씬 잘합니다.

Guess what? It's London.

The idea was that you augment that.

몸과 마음을 강화한다는 생각을 어떻게 실현할 수 있을까요?

And so, how do you augment that?

Well, we bought one of these.

This is a micro gas turbine.

바로 마이크로 가스 터빈입니다.

This was ground zero,

이건 시작이구요.

so that little piece of kit proved really quite impressive,

작은 제품이었지만 성능이 꽤 좋았죠.

so we got two in a field.

그래서 두 개를 사용해 보았습니다.

The real hero here, by the way, is, right in the background,

그런데 진짜 대단한 사람이 바로 뒤에 있습니다.

there's a lady tending some vegetables,

밭일을 하고 있던 어느 여자분인데요.

who does a brilliant job of trying to ignore us for a while --

저희를 전혀 개의치 않고 자기 일만 하고 있죠.

(Laughter)

I think the only thing less happy is the grass,

잔디만 불쌍한 것 같네요.

that we did probably damage quite badly.

저희가 아마 꽤 상처를 입혔을 겁니다.

You get an idea of the thrust here,

이걸로 추진력을 얻을 수는 있었지만 터빈을 수평으로 놓는 데는 실패했습니다.

when I try to hold them horizontally and somewhat fail.

추진력은 50 kN 정도였습니다.

That's around 50 kilos of thrust there.

We were quite impressed with that.

그 정도로도 꽤 만족스러웠고 목표에 거의 다 왔다고 생각했죠.

We thought we were getting somewhere.

So there's only one sensible way to go from there:

그래서 적당한 방법을 하나 찾았는데요.

you get four.

네 개를 사용하는겁니다.

(Laughter)

I have to say, I still like watching these back.

저는 지금도 이 동영상을 다시 돌려보곤 합니다.

저희는 이런저런 고민 끝에 하중을 분산시키기로 했습니다.

So then we thought well, let's try and spread the load a bit.

우리는 다리로 하중을 버티죠.

The legs are designed to take the load,

그렇다면 다리로 하중을 분산시키면 어떨까요?

so why don't we spread it out a bit?

That bit was good.

저 기구도 괜찮았는데요.

저 장비도 좋은 생각이었지만 생각대로 잘 되지 않았습니다.

The harness --

a nice idea but it didn't really work,

as you'll see now.

지금 보시는 대로 말이죠.

여러 가지 시도를 해봤는데요.

This whole journey was very much about trying things --

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Yeah, it really didn't work, did it?

네, 정말 잘 안되는 거 같죠?

Trying things and learning by failing at them most of the time.

새로운 것들을 시도해보고 실패를 통해 개선해나갔습니다.

And that included failing by falling over.

넘어졌다 또 일어나고를 계속 반복했습니다.

If you notice, we've got five engines here --

잘 보시면 엔진이 모두 5 개인데요.

한 개가 수리중인데도 기다리지 않고 그냥 계속했죠.

not to be put off by the fact one was in maintenance,

still had a go.

그러다가..

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And then I pinched a fuel line.

그러다가 연료관이 터졌어요.

다시는 이러지 말아야겠다는 깨달음을 얻은 순간입니다.

So again, good learning. We learned not to do that again.

This was a blind alley.

갈 데까지 가서는..

(Laughter)

(웃음)

This was three on each arm --

팔마다 세 개의 터빈을 달았죠.

정말 웃기죠.

that was ridiculous.

That was 70 kilos on each arm.

팔마다 70 kg 정도 됩니다.

Again, struck that one off.

다시, 하나를 떼어냈죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But we were starting to make some really quite convincing progress,

하지만 저희는 조금씩 성공에 가까워지고 있었습니다.

어쩌면 성공할지도 모르겠다고 다들 생각할 만큼 말이죠.

just enough to make you believe that maybe --

maybe we could get there.

You can see, look -- tantalizing.

아슬아슬해 보이죠.

The model of one on each leg and two on each arm,

다리에 한 개씩 달고 팔에 두 개씩 달았을 때

on paper, that was enough thrust.

충분한 추진력을 보여주었습니다.

And then we did what I'm about to show you now,

저희의 또 다른 시도를 보여드릴 건데요.

and I still love watching this one.

저는 아직도 이걸 보는 걸 좋아합니다.

This was our first six-second, reasonably coherent flight.

처음으로 6초 정도 안정적으로 비행했던 순간입니다.

That was the point where this endeavor went from:

저희의 노력이 빛을 발한 순간이죠.

"이게 될지 모르겠어"라며 출발해서 "세상에, 성공했어!"로 이어지기까지

"I'm really not sure this is going to work,"

to: "Oh my god, it does work!"

문제들을 개선해 나갔습니다.

From there on we then refined it,

그러나 저희는 계속해서 실패에 직면했는데요.

but we carried on falling over a lot.

실패하는 것은 배움을 얻기 가장 좋은 방법이죠.

Falling over, like I say, is definitely the best way to learn.

After a while, we starting really refining the layout of all of this.

저희는 이 엔진 배치 방법을 수정하기 시작했습니다.

And you'll see, that's stability and control --

보시다시피 안정적이고 방향 조작도 잘 되죠.

전선 같은 것도 없죠.

there's no wires there or anything --

기술을 개선하려는 노력의 결과였습니다.

that's a combination of us refining the technology,

including with a Tupperware box on the back for the electronics

등에 맨 전기 공급 상자도 그 결과죠.

and actually learning the balance and control.

균형과 조작성을 갖추기 시작했습니다.

이제 다음 차례는 귀를 보호하는 문제인데요.

I'm now going to save your ears for the next short piece

and talk over it.

제트 엔진의 소음이 귀에 거슬렸거든요.

After a while, the jet engine noise is a bit annoying.

이건 바로 몇 주 전 영상입니다.

This is only a few weeks ago.

You can see the stability and control is really quite nice,

놀라운 안정성과 조작성을 보여주죠.

and I'd like to think this somewhat validates that starting hypothesis,

이게 처음 시작할 때의 가설을 입증한다고 생각하는데요.

that the human mind and body, if properly augmented in that way,

이 방법으로 사람의 몸과 마음이 강화되어

상당히 멋진 일을 해내고 있죠.

can achieve some pretty cool stuff.

I mean, like I said:

I'm not thinking about where I'm moving my arms at that stage.

저 때 저는 팔이 향하는 곳이 아니라

I'm looking at the objective of where I want to get to,

제가 가고자 했던 곳을 내려다보고 있었습니다.

and a bit like riding a bike,

자전거를 탈 때 처럼요.

my arms are just doing their thing.

제 팔은 본연의 역할에 충실하고 있었는데

It's a very strange experience.

매우 이상한 경험이었습니다.

So where is all this headed?

그럼 목표 지점이 어디일까요?

I'll talk over this landing --

착지하는 것만 보시면

I think I land in this one.

저는 이곳에 착지하려고 했죠.

Well, I don't think anybody's going to go down to Walmart

저는 사람들이 쇼핑하러 갈 때나

아이들을 학교에 데려다 줄 때 이걸 쓸 거라고는 생각하지 않습니다.

or take the kids to school in any of this stuff for a while,

but the team at Gravity are building some awesome technology

그러나 그래비티사의 개발팀은 이 놀라운 기술을 이용해서

단순한 놀이 형태로 만들려고 합니다.

that's going to make this look like child's play.

We're working on some things

이미 시작한 일도 있는데요.

특별한 비행 경험을 대중에게 제공하기 위해

that will seek to bring this unusual experience of flight

to a wider audience, beyond the events and displays we're doing.

저희가 비행하는 모습을 선보이는 행사를 여는 것입니다.

We're even starting to look for pilots two and three,

그래서 비행사 두세 명을 필요한데요. 여기 지원하실 분 계신가요?

if there's any volunteers.

저는 목표가 하나 있는데요.

I've got this vision.

It sounds audacious, but let's just stick it out there,

대담하게 들리겠지만 말씀드려 보겠습니다.

언젠가는 우리가 해변을 날 수 있게 될 겁니다.

that one day maybe we can rise up above a beach,

fly up and down the coastline of it, rise up a bit higher,

해안선을 이곳저곳을 다니며 더 높이 날게 될 거예요.

이 목표를 실현하기 위해 안전 장치도 만들고 있습니다.

with some of the safety kit we're working on to make this achievable.

저기 수평선 너머에서 수송기가 격납고를 연 채로 다가옵니다.

Then over the horizon comes a Hercules with the ramp down.

수송기가 스쳐 지나갈 때 우리는 속도를 높여 따라붙죠.

As it comes past, you start picking up speed

and see if we can intercept --

수송기 뒤쪽으로요. 앞쪽으로 가면 큰일나죠.

from the rear, not the front, that would be a mistake --

그리고는 뒤쪽 격납고로 착륙합니다.

and then try and land in the back.

그렇게 하기에는 아직 멀었지만요.

And as I say, that's a little way off at the moment.

But this is also, if I take a big step back from this,

그런데 잠시 먼 과거로 되돌아가보면

this is also a very personal journey for me.

이 일은 개인적으로 의미가 있습니다.

Back to that lovely photo,

저 멋진 사진 속의 그림을 보시면

or photo in a picture.

Sadly, my father took his own life when I was 15,

애석하게도 저희 아버지는

이루지 못한 꿈을 남겨둔 채 제가 15살 때 돌아가셨습니다.

and left an awful lot of unfulfilled ambition.

말씀드린대로 놀라운 발명가였고 굉장히 창의적인 분이셨죠.

He was a wonderful inventor,

a maverick creator.

And I'd just like to think, if it was possible,

그리고 만약에 가능하다면

if he was looking down,

하늘에서 보고 계신다면

he would be --

아버지는 아마

he'd certainly be smiling at some of the things we've done here,

저희가 해낸 일들을 보고 틀림없이 미소를 지으실 거라고 생각해요.

I think.

이 모든 걸 아버지께 바칩니다.

So, it's a tribute to him.

I've got a lot of things to get done today.

Worst-case scenario, we don't get a clean start.

최악의 상황이었죠. 깔끔하게 출발하지 못했고

Or we get an unplanned failure while I'm actually flying around.

비행중에도 예상치 못한 고장이 있었습니다.

그래서 낮게 날아야 했죠.

This is why we keep it very low,

바보 같은 자세로 뒤로 넘어진 건 정말 최악이었습니다.

so the worst is I just look like an idiot and fall on my rear, as I said.

물론 다들 재밌어하셨지만요.

So you can all enjoy that if that happens.
