I've been a political cartoonist on the global stage for the last 20 years.

Oh, Europeans liked him a lot.

He was a multilateralist.

다자주의자였고

He favored diplomacy.

외교를 중시하였죠.

He wanted to be friends with Iran.

이란과 친구가 되고 싶어 했죠.

And then ...

reality imitated caricature

현실은 캐리커쳐의 모작이 되었죠.

the day Donald Trump became the President of the United States of America.

You know, people come to us and they say,

사람들이 저희에게 와서 이렇게 말하곤 하죠.

"It's too easy for you cartoonists. I mean -- with people like Trump?"

"만화가들 요즘 일하기 쉽겠어요. 트럼프 같은 사람이 대통령이잖아요?"

Well, no, it's not easy

아뇨. 쉽지 않아요.

to caricature a man who is himself a caricature.

그 자체가 캐리커쳐인 사람을 캐리커쳐로 그려 낸다는 건 어렵죠.

Populists are no easy target for satire

포퓰리스트는 풍자를 위한 쉬운 목표 대상이 아니에요.

because you try to nail them down one day,

어느 날 여러분들이 그들을 짓눌러 놓으면

and the next day, they outdo you.

그 다음 날 당신을 능가하니까요.

For example, as soon as he was elected,

예를 들면, 트럼프가 당선이 되자마자

I tried to imagine the tweet that Trump would send on Christmas Eve.

저는 그가 크리스마스 이브날 뭐라고 트위터에 글을 쓸지 상상해보았어요.

So I did this, OK?

And basically, the next day, Trump tweeted this:

and those who have fought me and lost so badly

그리고 나와 경쟁했다가 비참하게 패배해서

they just don't know what to do. Love!]

It's the same!

This is the era of strongmen.

지금은 바야흐로 상남자의 시대예요.

And soon, Donald Trump was able to meet his personal hero, Vladimir Putin,

and this is how the first meeting went:

[I'll help you find the hackers. Give me your password.]

And I'm not inventing anything.

He came out of that first meeting saying that the two of them had agreed

on a joint task force on cybersecurity.

합동 특수임무부대를 운영하는데 동의했다고 말했죠.

This is true, if you do remember.

사실입니다. 기억을 하신다면요.

Oh, who would have imagined the things we saw over these 20 years.

지난 20년 동안 이런 일을 목격하리라 누가 상상이나 했을까요.

We saw Great Britain run towards a European Union exit.

저희는 대영제국이 EU를 빠져나가는 비상구로 내달리는 것을 목격했죠.

[Hard Brexit?]

[브렉시트 좀 힘들지?]

In the Middle East, we believed for a while

저희는 한동안 믿었습니다.

in the democratic miracle of the Arab Spring.

중동에서 아랍의 봄이라는 민주주의의 기적이 있을 것이라고요.

We saw dictators fall, we saw others hang on.

독재자의 추락을 목격했으나 다른 독재자들은 자리를 이어나갔죠.

And then there is the timeless Kim dynasty of North Korea.

그리고 북한에서는 영원한 김씨 왕조가 존재하죠.

These guys seem to be coming straight out of Cartoon Network.

그들은 카툰 네트워크 채널에서 막 나온 것처럼 보이죠.

I was blessed to be able to draw two of them.

저는 영광이었습니다. 두 사람을 그릴 수 있었거든요.

Kim Jong-il, the father,

아버지였던 김정일이

when he died a few years ago, that was a very dangerous moment.

And then the son, Kim Jong-un,

He's now friends with the US president.

They meet each other all the time, and they talk like friends.

Should we be surprised

저희는 놀라야 할까요?

to be living in a world

병적으로 자기 중심적인 사람들이

ruled by egomaniacs?

지배하는 세상에서 살고 있잖아요.

What if they were just a reflection of ourselves?

만약 그들이 저희들의 모습을 반영하고 있다면 어떠세요?

I mean, look at us, each of us.

제 말은, 스스로 한 번 보세요.

Yeah, we love our smartphones;

we love our selfies;

You know, he and his peers in Silicon Valley

실리콘 밸리에 있는 마크 주커버그와 그의 동료들은

are the kings and the emperors

우리 시대의 왕이자 황제입니다.

of our time.

Showing that the emperors have no clothes,

황제들이 입을 옷이 없다고 하면

that's the task of satire, right?

그게 바로 풍자겠죠. 그렇죠?

Speaking truth to power.

권력 앞에서 말하는 진실.

This has always been the historical role of political cartooning.

그것이 언제나 시사만화의 역사적인 역할이었죠.

In the 1830s, postrevolutionary France under King Louis Philippe,

1830년대 루이 필리프 왕이 지배하던 혁명 후 프랑스에서는

journalists and caricaturists fought hard for the freedom of the press.

기자와 캐리커쳐 작가들이 언론의 자유를 위해 필사적으로 싸웠죠.

They were jailed, they were fined, but they prevailed.

감옥에 갇히고 벌금형을 받았지만 오랜 싸움 끝에 승리했어요.

And this caricature of the king by Daumier

도미에가 그린 왕의 캐리커쳐는

came to define the monarch.

군주를 정의하기에 이르렀죠.

It marked history.

역사의 한 획을 그었죠.

It became the timeless symbol of satire triumphing over autocracy.

전제 정치에 대한 승리를 표현한 불변하는 풍자의 상징이 되었어요.

Today, 200 years after Daumier,

도미에 이후 200년이 흐른 지금

are political cartoons at risk of disappearing?

시사만화는 사라질 위기에 처한 걸까요?

Take this blank space on the front page of Turkish opposition newspaper "Cumhuriyet."

터키 야당 성향 신문 "공화국"의 1면에는 빈 박스가 있는데요.

This is where Musa Kart's cartoon used to appear.

원래는 무사 카트의 만화가 있던 자리였죠.

In 2018, Musa Kart was sentenced to three years in jail.

2018년 무사 카트는 징역 3년형을 선고받았어요.

For doing what?

뭐 때문이냐구요?

For doing political cartoons in Erdoğan's Turkey.

에르도완이 지배하는 터키에서 시사만화를 그려서 그렇게 되었죠.

Cartoonists from Venezuela, Russia, Syria have been forced into exile.

베네수엘라, 러시아, 시리아의 만화 작가들은 추방을 당하기도 했죠.

Look at this image.

이 이미지를 한번 보시죠.

It seems so innocent, right?

너무나 순수한 장면이죠. 그렇죠?

Yet it is so provocative.

하지만, 도발적이기도 하죠.

When he posted this image,

이 이미지를 게재했을 때

Hani Abbas knew it would change his life.

하니 아바스는 그의 인생이 바뀔 것을 알고 있었어요.

It was in 2012, and the Syrians were taking to the streets.

2012년의 일이었는데, 시리아인들이 가두시위에 나섰을 때였죠.

Of course, the little red flower is the symbol of the Syrian revolution.

물론, 저 작은 빨간 꽃은 시리아 혁명의 상징인데요.

So pretty soon, the regime was after him,

곧, 그 정권은 그를 뒤쫓기 시작했고

and he had to flee the country.

그는 시리아를 떠나야만 했죠.

A good friend of his, cartoonist Akram Raslan,

그의 친한 친구인 만화가 아크람 라스란은

didn't make it out of Syria.

He died under torture.

그는 고문을 받다 세상을 떠났죠.

In the United States of America recently,

최근 미국에서도 유사한 사례가 있었죠.

some of the very top cartoonists, like Nick Anderson and Rob Rogers --

닉 앤더슨과 롭 로저스 같은 유명 만화가에게 일어난 일이죠.

this is a cartoon by Rob --

이건 롭의 만화인데요.

[2018년 현충일. (묘비) 진리. 영예. 법규.]

they lost their positions

그들은 일자리를 잃었죠.

because their publishers found their work too critical of Trump.

출판사들은 그들의 작품이 트럼프를 너무 깎아내린다 생각했거든요.

And the same happened to Canadian cartoonist Michael de Adder.

똑같은 일이 캐나다 만화가인 마이클 데 애더에게도 일어났죠.

Hey, maybe we should start worrying.

아마 우리도 슬슬 걱정을 해야겠어요.

Political cartoons were born with democracy,

시사만화는 민주주의와 함께 탄생했어요.

and they are challenged when freedom is.

자유가 억압을 받을 때면 시사만화도 억압받았죠.

You know, over the years,

수년에 걸쳐서

with the Cartooning for Peace Foundation and other initiatives,

"평화를 위한 만화 재단"과 다른 단체들이 활동을 시작했죠.

Kofi Annan -- this is not well known -- he was the honorary chair

잘 알려지지 않은 사실이지만

코피 아난은 저희 재단의 명예 회장이셨어요.

of our foundation,

the late Kofi Annan, Nobel Peace Laureate.

노벨상 수상자인 고(故) 코피 아난이요.

He was a great defender of cartoons.

그는 만화를 지키는 위대한 수호자였어요.

Or, on the board of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists,

또한 저희는 "미국 시사 만화 작가 협회" 이사회로서

we have advocated on behalf of jailed, threatened, fired, exiled cartoonists.

감옥에 있거나, 협박받거나, 해고나 추방을 당한 만화가들을 변호했죠.

But I never saw a case of someone losing his job

하지만, 저희는 그리지도 않은 만화로 해고를 당한 경우는 본 적이 없었어요.

over a cartoon he didn't do.

Well, that happened to me.

근데 제가 그 일을 당했죠.

For the last 20 years, I have been with the "International Herald Tribune"

지난 20년 동안 저는 "인터네셔널 헤럴드 트리뷴"과

"뉴욕 타임즈"에서 일했어요.

and the "New York Times."

Then something happened.

그러다 큰일이 났죠.

In April 2019,

2019년 4월

a cartoon by a famous Portuguese cartoonist,

유명한 포르투갈 만화가가 그린 만화가

which was first published in a newspaper "El Expresso" in Lisbon,

리스본의 "엘 엑스프레소"라는 신문에 최초로 게재되었는데

was picked by an editor at the "New York Times"

"뉴욕 타임즈" 편집장이 그걸 보게 되죠.

and reprinted in the international editions.

그리고 그 만화를 국제판에 전재했어요.

This thing blew up.

그리고 일이 커졌죠.

It was denounced as anti-Semitic,

반유대주의자라고 비난을 받게 되었으며

triggered widespread outrage,

분노는 널리 퍼지게 되었고

apologies

누군가는 사과를 했고

and a lot of damage control by the Times.

뉴욕 타임즈는 수습하느라 바빴죠.

A month after, my editor told me

한 달이 지난 후, 편집장이 제게 말했죠.

they were ending political cartoons altogether.

시사만화는 모두 폐지하기로 했다고요.

So we could, and we should, have a discussion about that cartoon.

우리는 그 시사만화에 대해 토의할 수 있어야 하고 해야만 해요.

Some people say it reminds them of the worst anti-Semitic propaganda.

어떤 사람들은 시사만화가 반유대주의 선전을 떠올리게 한다고 하고

Others, including in Israel,

이스라엘인을 포함한 다른 이들은

say no, it's just a harsh criticism of Trump,

그게 아니라 단지 트럼프에 대한 냉혹한 비판이라고 하죠.

who is shown as blindly following the Prime Minister of Israel.

이스라엘 총리를 맹목적으로 따르고 있는 트럼프 말이에요.

I have some issues with this cartoon,

이 만화에 대해 저도 견해도 있지만

but that discussion did not happen at the "New York Times."

이러한 논의는 "뉴욕 타임즈"에서는 일어나지 않았어요.

Under attack, they took the easiest path:

공격을 당하자 그들은 가장 쉬운 길을 택했죠.

in order to not have problems with political cartoons in the future,

앞으로 시사만화 때문에 문제가 생기지 않도록

let's not have any at all.

그냥 다 폐지해 버리자고요.

Hey, this is new.

이거 정말 새롭네요.

Did we just invent preventive self-censorship?

예방적 자체검열법을 발명한 것인가요?

I think this is bigger than cartoons.

이것이 시사만화보다 더 큰 문제인 것 같아요.

This is about opinion and journalism.

이건 사람들 의견 및 언론에 대한 문제예요.

This, in the end, is about democracy.

결국 이건 민주주의에 관한 것이죠.

We now live in a world

오늘날 우리는 도덕적 군중이

where moralistic mobs gather on social media

SNS와 결집하여 폭풍처럼 일어나는

and rise like a storm.

그런 세상에 살고 있죠.

The most outraged voices tend to define the conversation,

가장 격노하는 목소리를 내는 사람이 대화를 주도하는 경향이 있고

and the angry crowd follows in.

성난 군중이 그를 따르게 되죠.

These social media mobs,

SNS 군중은 이익 집단에 의해서

sometimes fueled by interest groups,

힘을 얻기도 하는데요.

fall upon newsrooms in an overwhelming blow.

군중들은 압도적인 힘으로 보도국을 공격하기도 하죠.

They send publishers and editors scrambling for countermeasures.

그들은 출판사와 편집장에게 대응책을 강구하게 하죠.

This leaves no room for meaningful discussions.

의미 있는 논의가 있을 여유가 없어지죠.

Twitter is a place for fury, not for debate.

트위터는 화를 분출하는 곳이지 토론을 하는 곳이 아닌 것 같아요.

And you know what?

혹시 아세요?

Someone described pretty well our human condition in this noisy age.

누군가가 이 소란스러운 시대의 우리 인간의 상황을 잘 묘사했어요.

You know who?

누군지 아세요?

Shakespeare, 400 years ago.

바로 400년 전 셰익스피어죠.

["(Life is) a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."]

[(인생은) 바보가 지껄이는 이야기. 시끄럽고 정신없으나 무의미한 것.]

This speaks to me. Shakespeare is still very relevant, no?

제게 정말 와 닿았어요. 셰익스피어가 여전히 적절하죠?

But the world has changed a bit.

물론 세상이 바뀌긴 했지만요.

It's true.

You know, social media is both a blessing and a curse for cartoons.

소셜 미디어는 만화에게 축복이자 저주예요.

This is the era of the image, so they get shared, they get viral,

이미지의 시대이기 때문에 만화는 쉽게 공유되고 널리 퍼지죠.

but that also makes them a prime target.

하지만 이러한 특징이 만화를 주요한 표적으로 만들기도 하죠.

More than often, the real target behind the cartoon

생각보다 많은 횟수로 시사만화를 게재한 미디어들이

is the media that published it.

진짜 표적이 되기도 하고요.

[이라크 취재? 아뇨, 트럼프요.]

[Covering Iraq? No, Trump!]

That relationship between traditional media and social media

전통적 미디어와 소셜 미디어의 관계는

is a funny one.

재미있는 것인데요.

On one hand, you have the time-consuming process

전통적 미디어에서는 정보를 확인하고 검증하며 분류하는

of information, verification, curation.

시간이 걸리는 과정을 거쳐야 하죠.

On the other hand, it's an open buffet, frankly,

그러나 소셜 미디어는 솔직히 말해서 뷔페 같은 개념인데요.

for rumors, opinions, emotions,

루머, 의견, 감정 등 다양한 것들이

amplified by algorithms.

알고리즘에 의해서 증폭됩니다.

Even quality newspapers mimic the codes of social networks on their websites.

심지어 양질의 신문도 웹사이트에서 SNS 알고리즘을 모방하기도 하죠.

They highlight the 10 most read, the 10 most shared stories.

가장 많이 읽은 또는 가장 많이 공유한 기사를 10개씩 보여주죠.

They should put forward the 10 most important stories.

사실 가장 중요한 기사 10개를 강조해야 할 텐데 말이에요.

The media must not be intimidated by social media,

전통적 미디어는 소셜 미디어에 의해 위협을 받지 않아야 하고

and editors should stop being afraid of the angry mob.

편집장들은 성난 군중들을 더 이상 두려워하지 않아야 해요.

We're not going to put up warnings the way we do on cigarette packs, are we?

담뱃갑 경고문처럼 경고문을 붙이지 않아도 되겠죠?

Political cartoons are meant to provoke, just like opinions.

시사만화는 신문 사설처럼 토론을 유발하는 게 제맛이죠.

But before all, they are meant to be thought-provoking.

하지만 무엇보다도 진지한 생각을 유발시켜야 하죠.

You feel hurt?

기분이 상하셨나요?

Just let it go.

그냥 흘려보내세요.

You don't like it?

별로라고 생각하시나요?

Look the other way.

그럼 다른 시각에서 보세요.

Freedom of expression is not incompatible with dialogue

표현의 자유는 대화 및 서로에 대한 경청과

and listening to each other.

대립하지 않잖아요.

But it is incompatible with intolerance.

하지만 편협함과는 공존할 수 없죠.

(Applause)

Let us not become our own censors in the name of political correctness.

정치적 정당성이라는 이름으로 우리가 자신의 검열관이 되지 말자고요.

We need to stand up, we need to push back,

우리는 일어서서 저항해야 합니다.

because if we don't, we will wake up tomorrow

그렇지 않으면 아마 내일은 겉으로만 건전하게 보이는

in a sanitized world,

그런 세상에서 일어나게 되겠죠.

where any form of satire and political cartooning becomes impossible.

어떠한 풍자나 시사만화가 불가능한 그런 세상 말이에요.

Because, when political pressure meets political correctness,

정치적인 압력이 정치적 정당성과 만나게 될 때는

freedom of speech perishes.

표현의 자유가 사라지게 됩니다.

Do you remember January 2015?

2015년 1월 기억나세요?

With the massacre of journalists and cartoonists

언론인과 만화가의 대량 학살이

파리 "샤를리 엡도"에서 일어났죠.

at "Charlie Hebdo" in Paris,

we discovered the most extreme form of censorship:

저희는 가장 극단적인 형태의 검열법을 발견하였죠.

murder.

바로 살인이죠.

Remember how it felt.

어떤 느낌인지 기억하세요.

[Without humor we are all dead]

[유머가 없인 우린 모두 죽음]

Whatever one thought of that satirical magazine,

풍자적인 잡지에 대해서 누가 어떻게 생각했든지 간에

however one felt about those particular cartoons,

특정한 시사만화에 누가 어떻게 느꼈든지 간에

we all sensed that something fundamental was at stake,

우리 모두는 가장 근본적인 것이 위험에 처해 있음을 느꼈죠.

that citizens of free societies -- actually, citizens of any society --

자유로운 사회의 시민들이 사실 모든 사회의 시민들이

need humor as much as the air we breathe.

숨 쉴 공기가 필요한 것만큼 유머를 필요로 하죠.

This is why the extremists,

이러한 사실이 바로 극단주의자, 독재자, 전제 군주

the dictators, the autocrats and, frankly, all the ideologues of the world

솔직히 말하면 세상의 모든 이론적 지도자들이

cannot stand humor.

유머를 용인하지 않는 이유죠.

In the insane world we live in right now,

우리가 지금 살고 있는 광기의 세상에선

we need political cartoons more than ever.

그 어느 때보다도 시사만화가 필요합니다.

And we need humor.

그리고 유머도 필요하고요.
