I think it was in my second grade that I was caught

I was sent straight away to my school principal,

looked at my book with disgust,

flipped through the pages, saw all the nudes --

you know, I'd been seeing my mother draw nudes and I'd copy her --

전 어머니가 누드 그리는 것을 봤기 때문에 그걸 따라 했을 뿐인데

and the nun slapped me on my face and said,

수녀님이 뺨을 때리며

"Sweet Jesus, this kid has already begun."

"오, 예수님. 이 아이는 벌써 시작되었군요." 하시더군요.

I had no clue what she was talking about,

전 그때 교장 선생님이 무슨 뜻으로 말했는지 전혀 이해하지 못했습니다.

but it was convincing enough for me never to draw again

하지만 절대 다시 그림을 그리지 말아야겠다고 납득하기에는 충분했죠.

until the ninth grade.

최소한 중학교 3학년 때까지는요.

Thanks to a really boring lecture,

감사하게도, 너무 수업이 지루해서

I started caricaturing my teachers in school.

전 선생님들 캐리커처를 그리기 시작했습니다.

And, you know, I got a lot of popularity.

그리곤 전 인기가 많아졌죠.

I don't play sports. I'm really bad at sports.

저는 운동도 안 했고, 저 진짜 체육 못하거든요.

I don't have the fanciest gadgets at home.

집에 멋진 장난감들이 있는 것도 아니고

I'm not on top of the class.

반에서 공부를 잘하는 것도 아니었죠.

So for me, cartooning gave me a sense of identity.

그러다 보니, 만화 그리는 것이 저에겐 일종의 정체성을 가져다주었습니다.

I got popular, but I was scared I'd get caught again.

인기는 많아졌지만, 다시 선생님한테 걸릴까 봐 두려웠죠.

So what I did was I quickly put together

그래서 제가 뭘 했느냐면 재빠르게

a collage of all the teachers I had drawn,

제가 그린 선생님들 콜라주를 만들고서, 교장 선생님을 더욱

glorified my school principal, put him right on top,

광채 나게 그려, 맨 위에 놓고 선생님께

and gifted it to him.

He had a good laugh at the other teachers

and put it up on the notice board.

This is a part of that.

And I became a school hero.

All my seniors knew me. I felt really special.

I have to tell you a little bit about my family.

That's my mother. I love her to bits.

저분이 저의 어머닙니다. 제가 무척 사랑하는 분이죠.

She's the one who taught me how to draw and, more importantly, how to love.

어머니는 제게 그림 그리는 법, 더 중요한 건, 사랑하는 법을 가르쳐 주었습니다.

She's a bit of a hippie.

조금 히피 기질이 있으신데요,

She said, "Don't say that," but I'm saying it anyway.

이건 말하지 말라고 하셨는데, 어쨌거나 말할 겁니다.

The rest of my family are boring academics,

나머지 가족들은 재미없는 학자들이예요.

busy collecting Ivy League decals for our classic Ambassador car.

My father's a little different.

My father believed in a holistic approach to living,

While he still held that worldview, I was 16,

I got the best lawyer in town,

And he was very impressed. He was all tearing up. Ready to hug me.

And I said, "Hold that thought."

그 순간 말했죠. "잠시만요,"

I said, "Can I quit school then?"

"그럼 저 학교 관둬도 될까요?"

But, to cut a long story short,

I quit school to pursue a career as a cartoonist.

전 만화가가 되기 위해 학교를 관두었습니다.

I must have done about 30,000 caricatures.

약 30,000개의 캐리커처를 그렸고요.

I would do birthday parties, weddings, divorces,

생일잔치, 결혼식, 이혼, 뭐든, 누구든

anything for anyone who wanted to use my services.

제 솜씨를 필요로 하는 사람들에게 캐리커처를 해줬죠.

But, most importantly, while I was traveling,

가장 중요한 건, 제가 여행하는 동안

I taught children cartooning,

아이들에게 만화 그리는 방법을 가르쳤고,

and in exchange, I learned how to be spontaneous.

전 그 대가로 천진난만해지는 법,

And mad and crazy and fun.

미치고, 재밌어지는 법을 배웠죠.

When I started teaching them, I said let me start doing this professionally.

아이들을 가르치기 시작하고, 저는 이 일을 전문적으로 시작해야겠다고 마음먹었습니다.

When I was 18 I started my own school.

However, an 18 year-old trying to start a school

is not easy unless you have a big patron

or a big supporter.

So I was flipping through the pages of the Times of India

when I saw that the Prime Minister of India

was visiting my home town, Bangalore.

기사를 봤을 때,

And, you know, just like how

every cartoonist knows Bush here,

미국의 부시를 알고

and if you had to meet Bush,

it would be the funnest thing because

his face was a cartoonist's delight.

I had to meet my Prime Minister.

I went to the place where

I saw layers of security.

I caricatured my way through three layers

but I got stuck. I got stuck at the third.

And what happened was, to my luck,

I saw a nuclear scientist

at whose party I had done cartoons.

그의 파티에서 만화를 그려줬었거든요.

I ran up to him, and said, "Hello, sir. How do you do?"

그에게 달려가서, "안녕하세요. 잘 지내시죠?"라며 인사를 건넸고

He said, "What are you doing here, Raghava?"

그가 "라흐바, 자네 여기서 뭐하는가?"라고 묻더군요.

I said, "I'm here to meet the Prime Minister."

"총리를 만나기 위해 여기 있습니다."라고 대답했습니다.

He said, "Oh, so am I."

"나도 그러하네."라고 하시더군요.

I hopped into his car, and off we went

그의 차에 올라타 그 길로 바로 떠났죠.

through the remaining layers of security.

겹겹이 쌓인 남은 경비들을 지나쳐서요.

I sat him down, I caricatured him,

그를 앉혀놓고 그의 캐리커처를 그렸습니다.

and since then I've caricatured hundreds of celebrities.

그때부터 수백 명의 유명인사를 캐리커처 했죠.

This is one I remember fondly.

Salman Rushdie was pissed-off I think

because I altered the map of New York, if you notice.

Anyway, the next slide I'm about to show you --

The next slide I'm about to show you,

is a little more serious.

I was hesitant to include this in my presentation

because this cartoon was published

soon after 9/11.

일어난 직후에 출판되었죠.

What was, for me, a very naive observation,

제 입장에선 그저 단순한 논평이

turned out to be a disaster.

곧 재앙으로 변해버렸죠.

That evening, I came home to hundreds of hate mails,

그날 저녁, 집으로 수백 통의 항의 투서들이 와 있었고,

hundreds of people telling me how they

could have lived another day without seeing this.

하루라도 더 보지 않을 수 있겠느냐고 그랬죠.

I was also asked to leave the organization,

a cartoonists' organization in America,

제명당했습니다.

that for me was my lifeline.

그것은 제게 밥줄이었습니다.

That's when I realized, you know, cartoons are really powerful,

art comes with responsibility.

Anyway, what I did was I decided

어쨌든, 휴식을 좀 가져야겠다고

that I need to take a break.

I quit my job at the papers, I closed my school,

and I wrapped up my pencils and my brushes and inks,

연필, 붓, 잉크를 싸서

and I decided to go traveling.

여행을 하기로 합니다.

When I went traveling, I remember,

제가 여행 다니던 중, 제 기억으론

I met this fabulous old man,

굉장히 멋진 노인을 만납니다.

who I met when I was caricaturing,

캐리커처 하는 동안 만났죠.

who turned out to be an artist, in Italy.

알고 보니 이탈리아의 화가였습니다.

He invited me to his studio. He said, "Come and visit."

그는 "한 번 방문하게"라며 그의 작업실로 절 초대했죠.

When I went, I saw the ghastliest thing ever.

그곳에서 전 세상에서 가장 섬뜩한 것을 봤습니다.

I saw this dead, naked effigy of himself

그의 죽은 나체 모형이

hanging from the ceiling.

천장에 매달려 있었죠.

I said, "Oh, my God. What is that?"

제가 "맙...소사! 저게 대체 뭡니까?"

And I asked him, and he said,

라고 묻자, 그가 답하기를

"Oh, that thing? In the night, I die.

"아, 저거? 밤엔 내가 죽고

In the morning, I am born again."

아침에 난 다시 태어난다네."

I thought he was koo koo,

전 그가 약간 정신이 이상한 사람이라고 생각했습니다.

but something about that really stuck.

하지만 무언가 강한 인상이 남더군요

I loved it. I thought there was something really beautiful about that.

제 맘에 들었죠. 거기엔 정말 아름다운 무언가 있다고 생각했습니다.

So I said, "I am dead, so I need to be born again."

그래서, "난 죽었어. 그러므로 난 다시 태어나야 해."라고 했지요.

So, I wanted to be a painter like him,

그처럼 화가가 되고 싶었습니다.

except, I don't know how to paint.

다만 문제는, 제가 유화를 그릴 줄 모른다는 거죠.

So, I tried going to the art store.

그래서 미술 재료상에 가 보았습니다.

You know, there are a hundred types of brushes.

그곳엔 수백 가지의 붓들이 있습니다.

Forget it, they will confuse you

신경쓰지 마세요, 설사 그리는지 안다고 해도

even if you know how to draw.

여러분을 혼란스럽게 만들 뿐이니까요.

So I decided, I'm going to learn to paint by myself.

그래서 스스로 그림 그리는 법을 배우기로 했습니다.

I'm going to show you a very quick clip

아주 짧은 클립을 하나 보여 드리겠습니다.

to show you how I painted and a little bit

제가 그림을 어떻게 그렸는지

about my city, Bangalore.

그리고 제 도시 방갈로에 대해서.

They had to be larger than life.

제 그림들을 실물보다 커야만 했습니다.

Everything had to be larger. The next painting was even bigger.

모든 것이 커야 했죠. 다음 그림은 심지어 더 커집니다.

And even bigger.

더 커지고요.

And for me it was, I had to dance while I painted.

제 경우엔 그림 그리는 동안 춤을 춰야 했죠.

It was so exciting.

매우 즐거웠거든요.

Except, I even started painting dancers.

심지어는 무용수들을 그리기 시작했죠.

Here for example is a Flamenco dancer,

여기, 플라멩코 댄서의 예가 있습니다.

except there was one problem.

다만 한가지 문제점이 있었죠.

I didn't know the dance form, so I started following them,

전 춤의 유형을 잘 몰랐습니다. 그래서 무용수들을 따라다니기 시작했죠.

and I made some money,

그리고 돈도 좀 벌었습니다.

sold my paintings and would rush off

제 그림을 판 후에 프랑스나 스페인으로

to France or Spain and work with them.

그들과 함께 일하기 위해 급히 떠나곤 했죠.

That's Pepe Linares, the renowned Flamenco singer.

페페 리나레스 입니다. 잘 알려진 플라멩코 가수이죠.

But I had one problem, my paintings never danced.

하지만 한가지 문제점이 있었죠. 제 그림은 춤을 추지 않았습니다.

As much energy as I put into them

그림을 그리는 동안 쏟아 부을 수 있는 에너지를

while making them, they never danced.

다 쏟아 부어도, 제 그림은 춤을 추지 않았습니다.

So I decided -- I had this crazy epiphany at two in the morning.

하지만 어느 새벽 두 시에 갑자기 희한한 아이디어가 떠올랐죠.

I called my friends, painted on their bodies,

친구들을 불러서 그들의 몸에다가 그림을 그렸습니다.

and had them dance in front of a painting.

그리곤 그들을 제 그림 앞에서 춤추게 했죠.

And, all of a sudden, my paintings came alive.

그러자 드디어, 제 그림이 살아났죠.

And then I was fortunate enough

전 운 좋게도 이것을 실제로

to actually perform this in California with Velocity Circus.

벨로시티 서커스단과 함께 캘리포니아에서 공연도 했습니다.

And I sat like you guys there in the audience.

그리고 지금의 여러분처럼 거기 관람석에 앉아

And I saw my work come alive.

제 작품이 살아나는 것을 목격했죠.

You know, normally you work in isolation,

보통 화가들은 고립돼서 일하고

and you show at a gallery,

화랑에서 작품을 보여주죠.

but here, the work was coming alive,

하지만 이곳에선 작품이 살아 움직이는 겁니다.

and it had some other artists working with me.

그리고 다른 예술가들과 함께 일할 수 있었고요.

The collaborative effort was fabulous.

공동 작업을 통한 결실은 기막히게 멋졌거든요.

I said, I'm going to collaborate with anybody and everybody I meet.

그래서 만나는 모든 사람과 누구든지 간에 함께 작업할 거야 라고 했죠.

I started doing fashion.

패션 쪽 일도 시작했었죠.

This is a fashion show we held in London.

이건 런던에서 우리가 개최했던 패션쇼입니다.

The best collaboration, of course, is with children.

가장 멋진 공동작업은 물론 어린이들과 함께한 것들입니다.

They are ruthless, they are honest,

아이들은 인정사정없고 정직하죠.

but they're full of energy and fun.

하지만 그들은 에너지와 재미로 가득 차 있습니다.

This is a work, a library I designed for the Robin Hood Foundation.

이게 작품입니다. 로빈 후드 재단을 위해 제가 디자인한 도서관입니다.

And I must say, I spent time in the Bronx

working with these kids.

And, in exchange for me working with them,

they taught me how to be cool.

I don't think I've succeeded, but they've taught me.

Then I said, all this is good,

but I want to paint like a real painter.

American education is so expensive.

I was in India, and I was walking down the streets,

and I saw a billboard painter.

And these guys paint humongous paintings,

and they look really good.

And I wondered how they did it from so close.

So, one day I had the opportunity to meet one of these guys,

and I said, "How do you paint like that? Who taught you?"

And he said, "Oh, it's very easy. I can teach you,

but we're leaving the city,

because billboard painters are a dying,

extinct bunch of artists,

because digital printing has totally replaced them and hijacked them."

I said, in exchange for education in how to paint,

I will support them, and I started a company.

그들을 지원하기로 하고 회사를 하나 차렸습니다.

And since then, I've been painting all over the place.

전 그때부터 전 세계를 돌아다니며 그림을 그리고 있죠.

This is a painting I did of my wife in my apartment.

이건 제 아파트에 있는 제 아내를 그린 것입니다.

This is another painting.

And, in fact, I started painting on anything,

and started sending them around town.

Since I mentioned my wife, the most important collaboration

has been with her, Netra.

Netra and I met when she was 18.

I must have been 19 and a half then,

and it was love at first sight.

I lived in India. She lived in America.

She'd come every two months to visit me,

and then I said I'm the man,

I'm the man, and I have to reciprocate.

I have to travel seven oceans, and I have to come and see you.

I did that twice, and I went broke.

So then I said, "Nets, what do I do?"

She said, "Why don't you send me your paintings?

My dad knows a bunch of rich guys.

We'll try and con them into buying it,

and then..."

But it turned out, after I sent the works to her,

that her dad's friends,

like most of you, are geeks.

I'm joking.

No, they were really big geeks,

and they didn't know much about art.

So Netra was stuck with 30 paintings of mine.

So what we did was we rented a little van

and we drove all over the east coast trying to sell it.

She made enough money, she sold off the whole collection

Something happened along the line.

But this brought me -- with Netra managing my career --

it brought me a lot of success.

I was really happy. I thought of myself as a bit of a rockstar.

I loved the attention.

This is all the press we got, and we said,

And I said that the best way to celebrate is to marry Netra.

And you won't believe it, we put together a list of 7,000 people,

who had made a difference -- a ridiculous list,

but I was determined to bring them to India, so --

a lot of them were in India.

150 artists volunteered to help me with my wedding.

150명의 아티스트들이 저의 결혼식을 도와주었죠.

We had fashion designers, installation artists,

우린 패션 디자이너, 설치 미술가,

models, we had makeup artists, jewelry designers,

모델, 메이크업 아티스트, 보석 디자이너 등

all kinds of people working with me

모든 종류의 사람들이 제 결혼식을 설치 미술로

to make my wedding an art installation.

만들기 위해 저와 함께 일했습니다.

And I had a special installation in tribute to my in-laws.

그리고 이 특별한 설치물을 제 처가 식구들에게 공물로 바쳤습니다.

I had the vegetable carvers work on that for me.

저를 위한 야채 조각가의 작품입니다.

But all this excitement led

이 모든 신나는 일 때문에

to the press writing about us.

저희가 미디어에까지 실리게 되죠.

We were in the papers, we're still in the news three years later,

우린 신문에 실렸었고, 심지어 삼 년 후에도 뉴스에 언급됩니다.

but, unfortunately, something tragic happened right after.

하지만 불행히도, 매우 비극적인 일이 직후에 터집니다.

My mother fell very ill.

저의 어머니가 매우 위독해진 거죠.

I love my mother

전 저의 어머니를 사랑합니다.

and I was told all of a sudden that she was going to die.

헌데 느닷없이 어머니가 시한부 판정을 받게 된 겁니다.

And they said you have to say bye to her,

그리고 작별 인사를 준비하라고 하더군요.

you have to do what you have to do.

해야 할 일은 해야 했죠.

And I was devastated.

전 충격에서 헤어나질 못했습니다.

I had shows booked up for another year.

전 다음 일 년 동안의 전시회가 예약되어 있었고

I was on a high.

최고의 생활을 즐기고 있었습니다.

And I couldn't. I could not.

하지만 아무것도 할 수가 없었죠.

My life was not exuberant.

제 삶은 활기가 없어졌습니다.

I could not live this larger than life person.

이 과대 포장된 삶을 더는 살 수가 없었습니다.

I started exploring the darker abscesses of the human mind.

전 이 인간 마음의 어두운 종양을 탐험하기 시작하죠.

Of course, my work turned ugly,

당연하게도, 제 작품들은 보기 싫게 어두워집니다.

but another thing happened.

또 다른 일이 일어나죠.

I lost all my audiences.

제 관객을 잃어버린 겁니다.

The Bollywood stars who I would party with

저와 함께 파티를 하고 제 작품을 사던

and buy my work disappeared.

볼리우드 스타들은 사라져버립니다.

The collectors, the friends, the press,

수집가들, 친구들, 그리고 미디어까지

everyone said, "Nice, but thank you."

한결같이 "좋군그래, 하지만 난 되었네."라고 하더군요.

"No thank you," was more like it.

사실상 '노땡큐.' 라고 한 거에 더 가깝죠.

But I wanted people to actually

하지만 전 사람들이 제 작품을

feel my work from their gut,

가슴으로 직접 느끼기를 원했습니다.

because I was painting it from my gut.

왜냐하면 제가 가슴으로부터 그림을 그렸거든요.

If they wanted beauty,

만약 그들이 아름다움을 원한다면,

I said, this is the beauty I'm willing to give you. It's politicized.

이것이 제가 주고자 하는 아름다움입니다. 논쟁적이죠.

Of course, none of them liked it.

물론, 누구도 맘에 들어 하지 않았습니다.

My works also turned autobiographical.

제 작품은 또한 자서전적이 되어갔죠.

At this point, something else happened.

이 시점에서 또 다른 일이 일어납니다.

A very, very dear friend of mine

제가 굉장히 아끼는 친구가

came out of the closet,

자신이 동성애자임을 밝힌 거죠.

and in India at that time, it was illegal to be gay,

그 당시 인도에서 동성애는 불법이었습니다.

and it's disgusting to see how people respond to a gay person.

그리고 사람들이 동성애자들을 어떻게 대하는지를 보는 건 역겨울 정도입니다.

I was very upset.

전 굉장히 화가 났습니다.

I remember the time when my mother used to dress me up

저는 어머니가 절 소녀처럼 옷을 입혔던 것을 기억합니다.

as a little girl -- that's me there --

저 꼬마 여자애가 접니다.

because she wanted a girl, and she has only boys.

어머니는 딸을 원하셨거든요, 하지만 당신에겐 아들밖에 없었죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Anyway, I don't know what my friends are going to say after this talk.

하여튼, 제 친구들이 이 강연 이후에 저한테 뭐라 할지 모르겠네요.

It's a secret.

이건 비밀입니다.

So, after this, my works turned a little violent.

이후에 제 작품들은 약간 폭력적으로 변하죠.

I talked about this masculinity that one need not perform.

전 행해질 필요가 없는 남성성에 대해서 말합니다.

And I talked about the weakness of male sexuality.

그리고 남성 성적 정체성의 약점에 대해서도 다루죠.

This time, not only did my collectors disappear,

이번엔 제 그림 수집가들이 사라질 뿐만 아니라,

the political activists decided to ban me

정치적 운동가들이 저를 금기시하고,

and to threaten me

위협하고,

and to forbid me from showing.

그리고 제가 전시하는 것을 금지했습니다.

It turned nasty, and I'm a bit of a chicken.

일이 험악해졌죠. 그리고 전 새가슴입니다.

I can't deal with any threat. This was a big threat.

전 위협에 대처할 수가 없었습니다. 정말 큰 위협들이었죠.

So, I decided it was time

그래서 모든 것을 정리하고 집으로

to end and go back home.

돌아가야 할 때라고 생각했죠.

This time I said let's try something different.

이번엔 좀 다른 걸 시도해보자고 했습니다.

I need to be reborn again.

전 다시 태어날 필요가 있었죠.

And I thought the best way, as most of you know who have children,

그리고 최고의 방법은, 대부분 자녀가 있는 분들이 아시다시피,

the best way to have a new lease on life,

인생에서 새 출발을 할 가장 좋은 방법은

is to have a child.

아이를 갖는 거죠.

I decided to have a child,

그래서 아이를 갖기로 결심하고

and before I did that, I quickly studied what can go wrong.

그래서 실행하기 이전에 빠르게 무엇이 잘못될 수 있는지를 공부했죠.

How can a family get dysfunctional?

어떻게 한 가정이 기능 장애를 일으키는지?

And Rudra was born.

곧 루드라가 태어났죠.

That's my little son.

제 귀여운 아들입니다.

And two magical things happened after he was born.

그가 태어나자마자 두 가지 마법 같은 일이 일어납니다.

My mother miraculously recovered

저의 어머니가 만만찮은 큰 수술 후에

after a serious operation,

기적처럼 회복되었고

and this man was elected president of this country.

그리고 이 사람이 이 나라의 대통령으로 당선되었죠.

You know I sat at home and I watched.

그가 당선될 때, 전 집에서 중계를 봤습니다.

I teared up and I said that's where I want to be.

전 눈물을 글썽이면 저곳이 제가 있고 싶은 곳이라고 했습니다.

So Netra and I wound up our life,

그래서 네트라와 전 인도에서의 삶을 정리해서

closed up everything we had,

가진 것을 다 처분하고 나서

and we decided to move to New York.

뉴욕으로 옮기기로 합니다.

And this was just eight months ago.

이것이 단지 8개월 전 일이지요.

I moved back to New York, my work has changed.

뉴욕으로 다시 옮겨와서는 제 작품이 또 변했습니다.

Everything about my work has become more whimsical.

제 작품 활동에 관한 모든 것들이 좀 더 장난기 있고 엉뚱해졌죠.

This one is called "What the Fuck Was I Thinking?"

이건 "내가 대체 무슨 생각을 했던 거야?"라는 작품이죠.

It talks about mental incest.

정신적 근친상간에 대해 다루고 있죠.

You know, I may appear to be a very nice, clean, sweet boy.

제가 친절하고 깔끔하고 사랑스러운 소년으로 보일지 모르겠습니다만

But I'm not. I'm capable of thinking anything.

실은 아닙니다. 전 무엇이든 상상할 수 있거든요.

But I'm very civil in my action, I assure you.

하지만 제 행동은 굉장히 예의 바릅니다. 장담하죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

These are just different cartoons.

이건 단지 다른 만화들일 뿐이죠.

And, before I go, I want to tell you a little story.

그리고 끝내기 전에 한가지 들려주고픈 짧은 이야기가 있습니다.

I was talking to mother and father this morning,

오늘 아침 제 부모님과 얘기했습니다.

and my dad said, "I know you have so much you want to say,

아버지가 "네가 많은 이야기를 하고 싶을 거란 걸 안다.

but you have to talk about your work with children."

하지만 네가 아이들하고 했던 일들은 꼭 얘기하려무나."

So I said, okay.

전 알았다고 했죠.

I work with children all over the world,

저는 전 세계 아이들과 일합니다.

and that's an entirely different talk,

그리고 그건 완전히 다른 강연이지요.

but I want to leave you with one story

하지만 한 가지 이야기는 하고 마치려 합니다.

that really, really inspired me.

저를 정말, 정말 고무시켰던 일입니다.

I met Belinda when she was 16.

전 벨린다가 16살 일 때 그녀를 만났습니다.

I was 17.

전 17살이었습니다.

I was in Australia,

전 오스트레일리아에 있었고

and Belinda had cancer,

벨린다는 암에 걸렸었죠.

and I was told she's not going to live very long.

그리고 전 그녀가 그리 오래 살지 못할 거라고 들었습니다.

They, in fact, told me three weeks.

사실, 삼 주 정도라고 들었습니다.

I walk into her room, and there was a shy girl,

그녀 방으로 들어가자 수줍어하는 소녀가 그곳에 있었습니다.

and she was bald, and she was trying to hide her baldness.

그녀는 머리카락이 없었고 그걸 숨기려 했죠.

I whipped out my pen, and I started drawing on her head

전 펜을 급히 꺼내 들어 그녀의 머리 위에 그림을 그리기 시작했습니다.

and I drew a crown for her.

그녀를 위해 왕관을 그려줬죠.

And then, we started talking, and we spent a lovely time --

그리곤 이야기를 나누며 좋은 시간을 보냈습니다.

I told her how I ended up in Australia,

제가 어떻게 호주에 오게 되었는지,

how I backpacked and who I conned, and how I got a ticket,

배낭을 어떻게 쌌는지, 누구에게 뻥을 쳤는지, 표는 어떻게 구했는지

and all the stories.

이 모든 이야기를요.

And I drew it out for her.

그리고 그녀를 위해 그림을 그려주고,

And then I left.

전 떠났지요.

Belinda died

벨린다는 죽었습니다.

and within a few days of her death,

그녀가 죽은 지 며칠이 지나

they published a book for her,

그녀를 위한 책이 출판되었습니다.

and she used my cartoon on the cover.

그리고 그녀는 저의 만화를 표지로 썼습니다.

And she wrote a little note, she said,

그리고 짧은 글을 남겼죠.

"Hey Rags, thank you for the magic carpet ride around the world."

"안녕 라흐, 전 세계를 날아다니는 마법 양탄자에 태워줘서 고마워."

For me, my art is my magic carpet ride.

저에겐, 제 그림은 마법 양탄자입니다.
