The "Dirty Jobs" crew and I were called

to a little town in Colorado, called Craig.

My role on the show, for those of you who haven't seen it -- it's pretty simple.

I'm an apprentice,

and I work with the people who do the jobs in question.

And my responsibilities are to simply try and keep up,

and give an honest account of what it's like to be these people

for one day in their life.

The job in question: herding sheep.

Great.

We go to Craig and we check into a hotel,

크레이그로 이동해 호텔에 체크인을 했고

and I realize the next day

다음날 양을 거세하는 작업이

that castration is going to be an absolute part of this work.

이번 일의 아주 중요한 부분이란 걸 알았습니다.

보통, 저는 어떤 사전 조사도 하지 않습니다.

Normally, I never do any research at all.

But this is a touchy subject, and I work for the Discovery Channel,

and we want to portray accurately whatever it is we do.

And we certainly want to do it with a lot of respect for the animals.

So I call the Humane Society and I say,

"Look, I'm going to be castrating some lambs. Can you tell me the deal?"

And they're like, "Yeah, it's pretty straightforward."

They use a band, basically, a rubber band, like this, only a little smaller.

밴드를 사용하는데요, 주로 고무밴드요, 이렇게 생긴 건데, 조금 더 작습니다.

This one was actually around the playing cards

사실 이건 카드 묶는데 쓰던걸 어제 가져 온 겁니다.

I got yesterday --

(Laughter)

그래도 서로 좀 비슷하게 생겼어요.

But it had a certain familiarity to it.

And I said, "Well, what exactly is the process?"

제가 물었죠, "그러니깐 정확히 어떻게 하는데요?"

And they said, "The band is applied to the tail, tightly.

그쪽에서 말하길 "밴드 하나는 꼬리를 단단히 묶으세요,

And then another band is applied to the scrotum, tightly.

그리고 다른 밴드는 음낭에 꽉 묶어요.

Blood flow is slowly retarded;

혈액의 흐름이 천천히 늦춰지고,

a week later the parts in question fall off.

일 주일 후 문제의 그것들이 떨어져요.”

"Great -- got it."

"아 네, 알았어요"

OK, I call the SPCA to confirm this.

그리고 동물 학대 방지 협회에 확인하려고 전화를 했고, 거기서도 확인을 해줬습니다.

They confirm it.

I also call PETA just for fun,

그리고 장난 삼아 ‘동물을 인도적으로 사랑하는 사람들의 모임’에도 전화를 해봤는데, 별로 좋아하진 않았지만 그들도 확인을 해줬습니다.

and they don't like it, but they confirm it.

OK, that's basically how you do it.

자, 기본적으로 이런 식이예요.

So the next day I go out.

다음날 촬영을 하러 나갔습니다.

And I'm given a horse and we go get the lambs

말 한 마리를 얻어 타고, 양들을 잡으러 나갔지요.

and we take them to a pen that we built,

그리고 우리로 양들을 몰아 넣었습니다.

and we go about the business of animal husbandry.

그리곤 가축 농사를 시작했습니다.

Melanie is the wife of Albert.

멜라니는 앨버트의 아내입니다.

Albert is the shepherd in question.

앨버트가 문제의 양치기입니다.

Melanie picks up the lamb, one hand on both legs on the right,

멜라니가 두 손으로 양을 들어 올립니다.

likewise on the left.

Lamb goes on the post, she opens it up.

Alright. Great.

Albert goes in, I follow Albert, the crew is around.

앨버트가 들어가고 다음 제가 들어가고 제작진이 주위에 둘러 섰죠.

I always watch the process done the first time before I try it.

저는 언제나 제가 처음 해보기 전에 시범을 봅니다.

Being an apprentice, you know, you do that.

아시다시피 견습생이니까, 그렇게 하는 거죠.

Albert reaches in his pocket to pull out, you know, this black rubber band,

앨버트가 뭘 꺼내려고 주머니에 손을 넣었는데, 이런 검은 고무밴드인가 했더니,

but what comes out instead is a knife.

그게 아니고 칼이더군요.

And I'm like, "Hmm, that's not rubber at all," you know?

And he kind of flicked it open in a way that caught the sun

that was just coming over the Rockies, it was very --

록키 산맥을 넘어 오는 햇살이 칼날에 비쳐서, 뭐랄까..

It was ... it was impressive.

아주 참 인상적이더군요.

In the space of about two seconds,

순식간에 앨버트는 능숙하게

Albert had the knife between the cartilage of the tail,

양의 엉덩이에 붙어 있는 꼬리의 연골 사이에 칼을 댔고,

right next to the butt of the lamb,

and very quickly, the tail was gone and in the bucket that I was holding.

순식간에 꼬리는 잘려서 제가 들고 있던 양동이에 떨어졌습니다.

그리곤 바로 앨버트는 커다란 엄지와 못이 박힌 집게손가락으로

A second later, with a big thumb and a well-calloused forefinger,

he had the scrotum firmly in his grasp.

양의 음낭을 꽉 쥐고,

And he pulled it toward him, like so,

자기 쪽으로 이렇게 쭉 당겼습니다.

and he took the knife and he put it on the tip.

그리고 칼을 잡아 그 끝에다 갖다 대었습니다.

"Now, you think you know what's coming, Michael,

무슨 일이 벌어졌는지 아시겠죠 마이클? 모른다구요? 알았어요.

You don't, OK?"

(Laughter)

He snips it, throws the tip over his shoulder,

그는 싹둑 잘라서 그 끄트머리를 어깨너머로 던졌습니다.

and then grabs the scrotum and pushes it upward,

and then his head dips down, obscuring my view.

But what I hear is a slurping sound,

and I am not even kidding.

I thought it best to talk in pictures.

I do something now I've never, ever done on a "Dirty Jobs" shoot, ever.

I say, "Time out. Stop."

You guys know the show, we use take one; we don't do take two.

There's no writing, there's no scripting, there's no nonsense.

We don't fool around, we don't rehearse --

we shoot what we get!

그냥 우리 앞에 있는 걸 찍죠.

I said, "Stop. This is nuts."

저는 "잠깐. 이건 미친 짓이에요 (nuts는 고환이란 뜻도 있습니다)”

I mean --

제 뜻은, 아시죠…

(Laughter)

"This is crazy.

(웃음)

이건 정말 말도 안돼요.

We can't do this."

이러면 안돼요.

And Albert's like, "What?"

앨버트가 "뭐요?”라고 그러더군요.

And I'm like, "I don't know what just happened,

그래서 전, "지금 도대체 무슨 일인지 모르겠네요,

but there are testicles in this bucket,

이 양동이에 음낭들 좀 봐요, 우린 이렇게 안 해요." 라고 했죠.

and that's not how we do it."

He said "Well, that's how we do it."

그랬더니 그는 "음, 우린 이렇게 하는데" 라고 하더군요.

I said, "Why would you do it this way?"

그래서 저는, "왜 이렇게 하죠?"

And before I even let him explain,

그리고 그가 설명할 여유도 주지 않고,

I said, "I want to do it the right way, with the rubber bands."

"전 제대로 하고 싶어요, 고무밴드로 말이에요." 라고 말했습니다.

And he says, "Like the Humane Society?"

I said, "Yes, like the Humane Society.

Let's do something that doesn't make the lamb squeal and bleed.

"양들이 꽥꽥대거나 피를 흘리게 하지 않는 방식으로 해봅시다.

이거, 세계 5대륙에서 방송돼요, 아저씨.

We're on in five continents, dude!

We're on twice a day on the Discovery -- we can't do this."

디스커버리 채널에 하루에 두 번씩이나 나가요. 이렇게 하면 안돼요.”

He says, "OK."

He goes to his box and pulls out a bag of these little rubber bands.

그는 공구함에서 이런 작은 고무밴드 한 봉지를 꺼냈습니다.

Melanie picks up another lamb, puts it on the post,

band goes on the tail, band goes on the scrotum.

Lamb goes on the ground, lamb takes two steps, falls down,

양은 땅 위에서 가다가, 두 걸음 걷곤 풀썩 쓰러졌고,

일어나서 몸을 좀 떨더니,

gets up, shakes a little,

takes another couple steps, falls down.

다시 두어 걸음 가서 또 쓰러졌습니다.

저는, 이게 양한테 별로 좋은 일은 아니구나 라고 생각했습니다.

I'm like, this is not a good sign for this lamb, at all.

일어나서 구석으로 가는데, 양이 떨고 있었습니다.

Gets up, walks to the corner.

It's quivering, and it lies down and it's in obvious distress.

그리고 바닥에 누웠는데, 분명 보기에도 고통스러워했죠.

And I'm looking at the lamb and I say, "Albert, how long?

그리고 저는 양을 쳐다보며, "앨버트, 얼마나 걸러요?"

When does he get up?"

"저 양이 언제쯤 일어날까요?" 라고 물었습니다.

He's like, "A day?"

"하루요."라고 그가 대답했습니다.

I said, "A day! How long does it take them to fall off?"

"하루요! 그럼 저 음낭은 언제 떨어져요?"

"A week."

"일주일요."

Meanwhile, the lamb that he had just done his little procedure on

한편, 좀 전에 그에게 작은 수술을 받은 양은,

is, you know, he's just prancing around, bleeding stopped.

깡총거리며 다녔습니다, 피도 안 나고요.

그 양은 풀도 뜯어먹고, 즐겁고 놀고 있었어요.

He's, you know, nibbling on some grass, frolicking.

And I was just so blown away at how completely wrong I was,

바로 그 순간, 제가 얼마나 틀렸었는지를 알고는,

거의 기절할 뻔 했습니다.

in that second.

그리고 어떻게 그렇게 오랫동안 완벽하게 틀릴 수 있었는지 생각하게 되었죠.

And I was reminded how utterly wrong I am, so much of the time.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And I was especially reminded

그리고 특히나 내가 얼마나 웃기게 운이 없었는지 생각하게 되었습니다.

of what a ridiculously short straw I had that day,

because now I had to do what Albert had just done,

왜냐하면 인제 제가 바로 앨버트가 했던 일을 할거고,

and there are like 100 of these lambs in the pen.

우리 안에는 양이 100마리쯤이나 있었거든요.

그리고 갑자기 이 모든 게 독일 포르노처럼 느껴지기 시작했습니다.

And suddenly, this whole thing's starting to feel like a German porno,

and I'm like --

그리고 저는,,

(Laughter)

Melanie picks up the lamb, puts it on the post, opens it up.

멜라니가 양을 들어 올려,

기둥에 올리고, 다리를 벌립니다.

Albert hands me the knife.

앨버트가 저에게 칼을 건네주었지요.

I go in, tail comes off.

인제 제가 꼬리를 자르고.

I go in, I grab the scrotum, tip comes off.

음낭을 쥐고, 끝을 잘랐습니다.

Albert instructs, "Push it way up there."

앨버트가 알려줬습니다. "저 위로 밀어요."

I do.

그렇게 했습니다.

"Push it further."

"더 밀어요."

I do.

그렇게 했습니다.

The testicles emerge. They look like thumbs, coming right at you.

엄지손가락처럼 생긴 고환들이 제 앞으로 불쑥 나왔습니다.

And he says, "Bite 'em.

"물어요." 그가 말했습니다.

Just bite 'em off."

"그냥 물어 뜯어요."

(Laughter)

무슨 말인지는 알아 들었어요.

And I heard him, I heard all the words --

(Laughter)

(웃음)

어쩌다.. 어쩌나 내가 이 지경이 됐지?

Like, how did I get here?

How did -- I mean --

어떻게…그러니까…도대체

how did I get here?

어쩌다 이런게 된거지?

It's just -- it's one of those moments where the brain goes off on its own,

(웃음)

마치, 뇌가 혼자서 저절로 켜졌다 꺼졌다 하다가,

and suddenly, I'm standing there in the Rockies,

정신차려보니 갑자기 제가 록키산맥 한가운데 서있는 그런 느낌이었습니다.

and all I can think of is the Aristotelian definition of a tragedy.

그리고 제가 생각해낼 수 있었던 거라곤 아리스토텔레스의 비극의 정의뿐이었죠.

You know, Aristotle says a tragedy is that moment

아시다시피 아리스토텔레스는 말했습니다, 비극이란

영웅이 자신의 자아와 마주치는 순간이라고요.

when the hero comes face to face with his true identity.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And I'm like, "What is this jacked-up metaphor?

저는 "이게 무슨 말도 안 되는 비유야?"

I don't like what I'm thinking right now."

지금 생각하고 있는 것도 말도 안되는데."라고 생각했죠.

전 이 생각을 머리 속에서 떨쳐낼 수 없었고,

And I can't get this thought out of my head,

and I can't get that vision out of my sight,

so I did what I had to do.

I went in and I took them.

And I'm standing there with two testicles on my chin.

And now I can't get -- I can't shake the metaphor.

I'm still in "Poetics," in Aristotle, and I'm thinking --

시학 관련 된 말씀입니다. 아리스토텔레스가 말 한 거죠.

그리고 불현듯 대학시절 고전 교수님이 가르쳤던 이후 한번도 듣지 않았던

out of nowhere, two terms come crashing into my head, that I hadn't heard

두 용어가 머리 속에서 꽝 부딪히더라고요.

since my classics professor in college drilled them there.

And they are "anagnorisis" and "peripeteia."

"아나그노리시스"와 "페리페테이아"라는 애들이죠.

Anagnorisis and peripeteia.

아나그노리시스와 페리페테이아.

아나그노리시스는 그리스어로 발견이라는 뜻이죠.

Anagnorisis is the Greek word for discovery.

Literally, the transition from ignorance to knowledge is anagnorisis.

말 그대로, 아나그노리시스란 무지에서 지식으로의 전환이고,

It's what our network does; it's what "Dirty Jobs" is.

우리 방송국이 하는 것,

바로 더러운 직업들인 거죠

And I'm up to my neck in anagnorises every single day.

그리고 저는 매일 "아나그노리시스"와 아주 깊게 관련되어 있죠.

Great.

The other word, peripeteia,

that's the moment in the great tragedies --

페리페티아는 아시다시피 위대한 비극에서 나오는 순간인데요

Euripides and Sophocles.

에우리피데스나, 소포클레스같은 작가들이요.

That's the moment where Oedipus has his moment, where he suddenly realizes

오이디푸스가 어느 날 갑자기

같이 잠자리에 들고 자신의 아이까지 가졌던 매력적인 여자가

that hot chick he's been sleeping with and having babies with

자신의 어머니였다는 사실을 갑자가 알게 되는 순간 같은 거죠.

is his mother.

That's peripety, or peripeteia.

그런걸 페리페티,

또는 페리페테이아라고 합니다.

And this metaphor in my head --

이런 비유가 제 머릿속에 맴돌았고-

I've got anagnorisis and peripeteia on my chin --

제 턱에는 아나그노리스스와 페리페티아가 달랑거리고 있었어요.

(Laughter)

I've got to tell you, it's such a great device, though.

When you start to look for peripeteia,

you find it everywhere.

I mean, Bruce Willis in "The Sixth Sense," right?

Spends the whole movie trying to help the little kid who sees dead people,

영화 내내 죽은 사람을 보는 꼬마를 도와주는데,

and then -- boom! -- "Oh, I'm dead."

그리곤, 꽝… 아, 나도 죽은 사람이구나.. 이런 게 페리페티이죠.

Peripeteia. You know?

알겠죠?

It's crushing when the audience sees it the right way.

관객들은 보고나선 참담해지죠.

Neo in "The Matrix," you know?

"매트릭스"에서의 네오도 있습니다.

"Oh, I'm living in a computer program.

아, 나는 컴퓨터 프로그램 속에 사는 존재구나...기괴하죠.

That's weird."

These discoveries that lead to sudden realizations.

이런 발견들이 갑작스런 깨달음으로 인도합니다.

저는 이백 개가 넘는 더러운 직업들을 경험하면서 이걸 깨달아왔습니다. 늘 말이죠.

And I've been having them, over 200 dirty jobs,

I have them all the time, but that one --

근데 한가지 제가 생각지도 못한 방법으로 뭔가를 꿰뚫은 것이 있었어요.

that one drilled something home in a way that I just wasn't prepared for.

거기에 서서

And, as I stood there,

looking at the happy lamb that I had just defiled --

제가 막 거세한 행복한 양을 봤는데

but it looked OK;

괜찮아 보였어요.

looking at that poor other little thing that I'd done it the right way on,

반면 제대로 된 방법으로 처리해준 불쌍한 양을 보면서,

큰 충격을 받았습니다.

and I just was struck by --

if I'm wrong about that,

내가 그 점에 대해 틀렸다면

and if I'm wrong so often, in a literal way,

what other peripatetic misconceptions might I be able to comment upon?

Because, look -- I'm not a social anthropologist,

but I have a friend who is.

I can still see Hillary doing the shots of rye,

dribbling down her chin, with the steel workers.

I mean, these are the people that I work with every single day.

"And if you have something to say about their thoughts, collectively,

it might be time to think about it.

Because, dude, you know, four years."

So, that's in my head, testicles are on my chin,

thoughts are bouncing around.

And, after that shoot, "Dirty Jobs" really didn't change,

in terms of what the show is, but it changed for me, personally.

And now, when I talk about the show,

I no longer just tell the story you heard and 190 like it.

I do, but I also start to talk about some of the other things

I got wrong;

People with dirty jobs are happier than you think.

Roadkill picker-uppers whistle while they work, I swear to God --

I did it with them.

They've got this amazing sort of symmetry to their life.

그들은 인생에 대한 이런 놀라운 균형을 가지고 있습니다.

And I see it over and over and over again.

So I started to wonder what would happen

we've been talking about it here for the last 36 hours.

Follow your dreams and go broke, right?

I mean, that's all I heard growing up.

I didn't know what to do with my life,

전 제 인생에서 무엇을 해야 할지 몰랐어요.

but I was told if you follow your passion, it's going to work out.

그러나 너의 열정을 쫓아간다면 성공할거라고 배웠습니다.

I can give you 30 examples right now.

바로 여기서 한 30개정도의 예를 들 수 있습니다.

Bob Combs, the pig farmer in Las Vegas

Why?

Matt Freund, a dairy farmer in New Canaan, Connecticut,

So I started to look at passion,

As Tim talked about earlier, that's a huge distinction.

What if OSHA got it wrong?

I mean -- this is heresy, what I'm about to say --

but what if it's really safety third?

만약 정말로 안전이 세번째라면요?

Right?

No, I mean, really.

What I mean to say is:

I value my safety on these crazy jobs

as much as the people that I'm working with,

but the ones who really get it done --

they're not out there talking about safety first.

안전 제일을 말로만 외치고 있지 않습니다.

They know that other things come first --

the business of doing the work comes first,

the business of getting it done.

And I'll never forget, up in the Bering Sea,

I was on a crab boat with the "Deadliest Catch" guys --

and I was back with a guy, lashing the pots down.

So I'm 40 feet off the deck,

which is like looking down at the top of your shoe, you know,

and it's doing this in the ocean.

Unspeakably dangerous.

I scamper down, I go into the wheelhouse

and I say, with some level of incredulity,

"Captain -- OSHA?"

And he says, "OSHA? Ocean."

And he points out there.

그러나 그 순간, 그가 말한 것은 미국 어디에서고 다시 들을 수 없는 것이고

But in that moment, what he said next can't be repeated in the Lower 48.

It can't be repeated on any factory floor or any construction site.

제조공장이나 건설 현장 어디서도 들을 수 없는 것이었습니다.

But he looked at me and said, "Son," --

그는 제 또래였는데, 근데, 저를 젊은이라고 부르더군요, 뭐 괜찮았어요…

he's my age, by the way, he calls me "son," I love that --

he says, "Son, I'm the captain of a crab boat.

My responsibility is not to get you home alive.

내 일은 널 안전하게 집에 보내는 게 아니다.

My responsibility is to get you home rich."

니네 집이 돈을 벌어 주는 것이 내가 할 일이란 말이다.”

You want to get home alive, that's on you."

넌 살아서 집에 가고 싶지, 그건 네가 알아서 할 일이야.

And for the rest of that day -- safety first.

그리곤 그 날 나머지 동안은, 안전제일이었죠

I mean, I was like --

So, the idea that we create this sense of complacency

when all we do is talk about somebody else's responsibility

as though it's our own, and vice versa.

Anyhow, a whole lot of things.

I could talk at length about the many little distinctions we made

and the endless list of ways that I got it wrong.

But what it all comes down to is this:

I've formed a theory,

and I'm going to share it now in my remaining 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

It goes like this:

we've declared war on work, as a society -- all of us.

It's a civil war.

It's a cold war, really.

We didn't set out to do it

and we didn't twist our mustache in some Machiavellian way,

but we've done it.

그러나 우리는 하고 말았습니다.

And we've waged this war on at least four fronts,

certainly in Hollywood.

The way we portray working people on TV --

TV에서 노동자들을 묘사하는 방식은

it's laughable.

If there's a plumber, he's 300 pounds

and he's got a giant butt crack, admit it.

You see him all the time.

That's what plumbers look like, right?

We turn them into heroes, or we turn them into punch lines.

우리는 그들을 영웅으로 만들던지, 아니면 코미디에 나오는 사람들로 만듭니다.

TV는 그런 식입니다.

That's what TV does.

We try hard on "Dirty Jobs" not to do that,

which is why I do the work and I don't cheat.

그러나 우리는 미국 광고업계와 전쟁을 벌였습니다.

But, we've waged this war on Madison Avenue.

So many of the commercials that come out there in the way of a message --

쏟아져 나오는 그 많은 광고들이

what's really being said?

메시지라고 할만한 것이, 뭘 말하고 있습니까?

"Your life would be better if you could work a little less,

일을 좀 적게 하면 당신의 삶이 더 나아질 것이다,

didn't have to work so hard, got home a little earlier,

만일 일을 그렇게 열심히 안 해도 된다면, 집에 좀 더 빨리 갈 수 있을 것이다,

좀 더 일찍 은퇴할 수 있다면, 좀 더 빨리 퇴근 할 수 있다면,

could retire a little faster, punch out a little sooner."

그런 얘기들이 계속해서, 끝도 없이 나옵니다.

It's all in there, over and over, again and again.

정치 관련해서는, 가용한 일자리에 대한 근본적인 진실에 영향을 미치는

Washington?

I can't even begin to talk about the deals and policies in place

협의나 정책에 대해서는 아예 이야기를 시작도 못하겠어요

that affect the bottom-line reality of the available jobs,

because I don't really know; I just know that that's a front in this war.

왜냐하면 전 정말 모르겠거든요.

근데 전 그게 이 전쟁에서 하나의 전선이란 걸 압니다.

And right here, guys -- Silicon Valley.

그리고 바로 여기 실리콘 밸리에서

I mean -- how many people have an iPhone on them right now?

지금 아이폰 가진 분이 얼마나 됩니까?

How many people have their BlackBerry?

블랙베리 가지고 계신 분들은 얼마나 됩니까?

We're plugged in; we're connected.

우리는 접속되어 있고, 연결되어 있죠.

I would never suggest for a second

전 기술 혁명에서

that something bad has come out of the tech revolution.

뭔가 나쁜 것이 나왔다고 주장할 생각은 추호도 없습니다.

Good grief, not to this crowd.

맙소사, 여러분한테 그런 건 아닙니다.

(Laughter)

But I would suggest

하지만 모방 없는 혁신은

that innovation without imitation is a complete waste of time.

완전히 시간낭비라고 말하고 싶어요.

아무도 더러운 직업을 만드는 사람들이 일을 해내는 걸

And nobody celebrates imitation

the way "Dirty Jobs" guys know it has to be done.

따라해 보는 것을 칭송하지 않습니다.

Your iPhone without those people making the same interface,

여러분이 가지고 있는 아이폰에 있는 인터페이스,

the same circuitry, the same board, over and over --

회로, 기판 등등을 만든 사람들이 없는 경우죠.

all of that -- that's what makes it equally as possible

아이폰에 있는 genius 같은 처럼

as the genius that goes inside of it.

똑같이 가능케 만드는 그런 겁니다.

우리는 새로운 공구상자를 가지고 있습니다.

So, we've got this new toolbox. You know?

Our tools today don't look like shovels and picks.

현대의 공구들은 삽이나 곡괭이처럼 생기지 않았죠.

그것들은 요즘 우리가 가지고 다니는 것처럼 생겼죠.

They look like the stuff we walk around with.

And so the collective effect of all of that

이것들의 공통적인 효과는

has been this marginalization of lots and lots of jobs.

수없이 많은 직업들을 하찮게 만들어 버린다는 겁니다.

그리고 제가 생각할 때, 아마 너무 늦지 않았나 하는데

And I realized, probably too late in this game --

I hope not, because I don't know if I can do 200 more of these things --

그러지 않았으면 합니다, 왜냐하면 제가 이런 일들을 200개 더 할 수 있을지 모르겠거든요

하지만 우린 우리가 할 수 있는 최대한 많이 해보려고 합니다.

but we're going to do as many as we can.

제가 볼 때 알아야 할 가장 중요한 것과

And to me, the most important thing to know

and to really come face to face with,

정말 직면해야 하는 것은

is that fact that I got it wrong about a lot of things,

not just the testicles on my chin.

I got a lot wrong.

So, we're thinking -- by "we," I mean me --

that the thing to do is to talk about a PR campaign for work --

Somebody needs to be out there, talking about the forgotten benefits.

잊혀진 장점에 대해 이야기를 해야 합니다.

I'm talking about grandfather stuff,

저는 할아버지들이 하시던 그런 걸 말하는 겁니다.

the stuff a lot us probably grew up with

우리들 중 많은 사람들이 커오면서 들었지만

but we've kind of -- you know, kind of lost a little.

지금은 많이

잃어버린 것들 말입니다.

Barack wants to create two and a half million jobs.

오바마 대통령은 2백5십 만개의 일자리를 만들려고 합니다.

사회기반시설은 엄청난 일입니다.

The infrastructure is a huge deal.

This war on work that I suppose exists, has casualties like any other war.

직업에 대한 이 전쟁은 제가 볼 때 다른 전쟁들처럼

The infrastructure is the first one,

declining trade school enrollments are the second one.

The infrastructure jobs that everybody is talking about creating

Meanwhile, we've got two trillion dollars, at a minimum,

according to the American Society of Civil Engineers,

지금 현재 D마이너스로 평가되는 현재 사회기반시설을

that we need to expend to even make a dent in the infrastructure,

확충하거나, 영향을 미치는데 필요한

which is currently rated at a D minus.

그래서 혹시 제가 무슨 출마를 한다면, 하지 않지만요,

So, if I were running for anything -- and I'm not --

I would simply say that the jobs we hope to make

저는 간단하게 우리가 만들고자 하는 일자리와

and the jobs we hope to create

우리가 창출하고자 하는 직업은

aren't going to stick unless they're jobs that people want.

사람들이 원하는 일이 아니면 받아 들여지지 않을 거라고 간단하게 말할 겁니다.

저는 이 컨퍼런스의 핵심은

And I know the point of this conference

is to celebrate things that are near and dear to us,

우리 가까이 있고 소중한 것들을 기리는 것이고,

but I also know that clean and dirty aren't opposites.

깨끗하고 더러운 것은 서로 반대의 것이 아니란 걸 알고 있습니다.

They're two sides of the same coin, just like innovation and imitation,

같은 동전의 양면일 뿐이죠

혁신과 모방처럼,

like risk and responsibility, like peripeteia and anagnorisis,

위험과 책임처럼,

페리페테이아와 아나그노리시스처럼,

like that poor little lamb, who I hope isn't quivering anymore,
