There's actually a major health crisis today

So that's where this field comes in

that we call the field of regenerative medicine.

It really involves many different areas.

either your very own cells

And that's where the field is today.

But it's actually not a new field.

Interestingly, this is a book

He actually devised some of the same technologies

used today for suturing blood vessels,

So if the field's been around for so long,

And that really has to do to many different challenges.

But if I were to point to three challenges,

the first one is actually the design of materials

that could go in your body

and do well over time.

And many advances now,

we can do that fairly readily.

The second challenge was cells.

We could not get enough of your cells to grow outside of your body.

Over the last 20 years, we've basically tackled that.

Many scientists can now grow many different types of cells.

Plus we have stem cells.

And the third challenge is vascularity,

So we can actually use biomaterials now.

This is actually a biomaterial.

We can weave them, knit them, or we can make them like you see here.

This is actually like a cotton candy machine.

You saw the spray going in.

That was like the fibers of the cotton candy

creating this structure, this tubularized structure,

which is a biomaterial

that we can then use

to help your body regenerate

using your very own cells to do so.

And that's exactly what we did here.

This is actually a patient

이분은 실제 환자분인데

who [was] presented with a deceased organ,

장기 하나를 못 쓰게 됐죠.

and we then created one of these smart biomaterials,

and then we then used that smart biomaterial

바로 그 생체재료를 이용해

to replace and repair

그 환자의 못쓰게 된 부위를

that patient's structure.

대체하고 치료했습니다.

What we did was we actually

used the biomaterial as a bridge

저 생체 물질을 일종의 다리로 이용해

so that the cells in the organ

장기의 세포가

could walk on that bridge, if you will,

그 다리를 건너도록 했다고 할 수 있습니다.

and help to bridge the gap

그렇게 해서 손상 부위를 연결함으로써

to regenerate that tissue.

조직을 재생시킨 것입니다.

And you see that patient now six months after

이제 여섯 달이 지난 환자의 X레이 사진에서

with an X-ray showing you the regenerated tissue,

which is fully regenerated

when you analyze it under the microscope.

We can also use cells alone.

우리는 세포만 따로 이용할 수도 있습니다.

These are actually cells that we obtained.

These are stem cells that we create from specific sources,

and we can drive them to become heart cells,

심장 세포가 되도록 유도할 수 있습니다.

and they start beating in culture.

그러면 배양 과정에서부터 박동하기 시작합니다.

So they know what to do.

그러니까 뭘 할지 아는 거죠.

The cells genetically know what to do,

세포는 유전적으로 자신의 할 일을 압니다.

and they start beating together.

그래서 다 같이 박동하기 시작하는 겁니다.

Now today, many clinical trials

현재 많은 임상 시험에서

are using different kinds of stem cells

여러 가지 다른 줄기 세포를 이용해

for heart disease.

심장 질환을 치료하고 있습니다.

So that's actually now in patients.

그러니까 저게 실제 환자 몸 속에 있는 겁니다.

Or if we're going to use larger structures

만약 더 큰 장기를 대체하기 위해

to replace larger structures,

더 큰 인공 장기가 필요하다면

we can then use the patient's own cells,

우리는 환자 자신의 세포를 활용하거나

or some cell population,

아니면 일부 세포군

and the biomaterials,

the scaffolds, together.

So the concept here:

so if you do have a deceased or injured organ,

we take a very small piece of that tissue,

less than half the size of a postage stamp.

We then tease the cells apart,

We then take a scaffold, a biomaterial --

again, looks very much like a piece of your blouse or your shirt --

we then shape that material,

and we then use those cells to coat that material

one layer at a time --

very much like baking a layer cake, if you will.

We then place it in an oven-like device,

and we're able to create that structure

and bring it out.

This is actually a heart valve

that we've engineered,

and you can see here, we have the structure of the heart valve

and we've seeded that with cells,

and then we exercise it.

So you see the leaflets opening and closing --

of this heart valve

that's currently being used experimentally

to try to get it to further studies.

Another technology

직접 환자에 적용한

that we have used in patients

또 다른 기술은

actually involves bladders.

방광과 관련이 있습니다.

We actually take a very small piece of the bladder from the patient --

저희는 환자의 방광에서 우표 크기의 절반도 안 되는

less than half the size of a postage stamp.

아주 작은 조각을 떼어냅니다.

We then grow the cells outside the body,

그런 다음 세포를 체외에서 배양하고

take the scaffold, coat the scaffold with the cells --

the patient's own cells, two different cell types.

We then put it in this oven-like device.

It has the same conditions as the human body --

37 degrees centigrade, 95 percent oxygen.

A few weeks later, you have your engineered organ

that we're able to implant back into the patient.

For these specific patients, we actually just suture these materials.

이런 환자들에게는 실제로 이런 재료들을 접합합니다.

We use three-dimensional imagining analysis,

but we actually created these biomaterials by hand.

But we now have better ways

to create these structures with the cells.

We use now some type of technologies,

where for solid organs, for example,

what we do is we take discard livers.

As you know, a lot of organs are actually discarded, not used.

So we can take these liver structures,

which are not going to be used,

and we then put them in a washing machine-like structure

that will allow the cells to be washed away.

Two weeks later,

2주가 지나면

you have something that looks like a liver.

You can hold it like a liver,

but it has no cells; it's just a skeleton of the liver.

And we then can re-perfuse the liver with cells,

preserving the blood vessel tree.

So we actually perfuse first the blood vessel tree

with the patient's own blood vessel cells,

and we then infiltrate the parenchyma with the liver cells.

And we now have been able just to show

the creation of human liver tissue

just this past month

using this technology.

Another technology that we've used

is actually that of printing.

This is actually a desktop inkjet printer,

but instead of using ink,

we're using cells.

And you can actually see here the printhead

going through and printing this structure,

and it takes about 40 minutes to print this structure.

And there's a 3D elevator

that then actually goes down one layer at a time

each time the printhead goes through.

And then finally you're able to get that structure out.

You can pop that structure out of the printer and implant it.

And this is actually a piece of bone

that I'm going to show you in this slide

Another more advanced technology we're looking at right now,

This particular printer we're designing now

is actually one where we print right on the patient.

So what you see here --

I know it sounds funny,

but that's the way it works.

Because in reality, what you want to do

is you actually want to have the patient on the bed with the wound,

and you have a scanner,

that first scans the wound on the patient

This is how it actually works.

We're also working on more sophisticated printers.

Because in reality, our biggest challenge

I don't know if you realize this,

but 90 percent of the patients on the transplant list

are actually waiting for a kidney.

Patients are dying every day

because we don't have enough of those organs to go around.

So this is more challenging --

So after the surgery,

life got a lot better for me.

I was able to do more things.

I was able to wrestle in high school.

고등학교에서는 레슬링도 할 수 있었습니다.

I became the captain of the team, and that was great.

I was able to be a normal kid with my friends.

친구들과 보통 애들처럼 놀 수 있었어요.

And because they used my own cells to build this bladder,

it's going to be with me.

I've got it for life, so I'm all set.

LM: Well right now I'm in college at the University of Connecticut.

I'm a sophomore and studying communications, TV and mass media,

2학년이고 커뮤니케이션과 매스 미디어를 전공합니다.

and basically trying to live life like a normal kid,

그러고 기본적으로는 그냥 보통 애들처럼 살려고 노력해요.

which I always wanted growing up.

그게 자라면서 항상 바랬던 거예요.

But it was hard to do that when I was born with spina bifida

그런데 척추뼈 갈림증을 가지고 태어나서

and my kidneys and bladder weren't working.

신장과 방광이 기능을 못했기 때문에 그게 힘들었죠.

I went through about 16 surgeries,

16번 정도 수술을 받았는데

and it seemed impossible to do that

10살 때 신장이 기능을 완전히 상실했을 때는

when I was in kidney failure when I was 10.

그런 게 불가능해 보였죠.

And this surgery came along

그러다 그 수술을 받았는데

and basically made me who I am today

덕분에 지금의 제가 있고

and saved my life.

제 목숨을 구한 거죠.

(Applause)

JE: And Tony's done hundreds of these?

엔리케즈: 그리고 안토니 박사님은 이런 수술을 수백 건 하셨죠?

LM: What I know from, he's working really hard in his lab

루크: 제가 듣기로는 연구실에서 엄청 열심히 일 하신데요

and coming up with crazy stuff.

그래서 굉장한 물건을 만드신다고 합니다.

I know I was one of the first 10 people to have this surgery.

제가 알기로 제가 이 수술을 받은 첫 10명 가운데 하나인데

And when I was 10, I didn't realize how amazing it was.

제가 10살 땐 그게 얼마나 대단한 일인지 몰랐어요.

I was a little kid, and I was like,

그 때는 어려서, 그냥

"Yeah. I'll have that. I'll have that surgery."

"좋아요, 그거 할래요, 수술 할래요." 그랬죠.

(Laughter)

All I wanted to do was to get better,

그저 바랬던 건 좀 더 건강해지는 거여서

and I didn't realize how amazing it really was until now that I'm older

그게 얼마나 대단한 지는 이제까지 몰랐는데

and I see the amazing things that he's doing.

나이가 드니 박사님께서 하시는 일이 얼마나 대단한지 알겠습니다.

JE: When you got this call out of the blue --

엔리케즈: 그러니까 갑자기 우리 연락을 받았는데

Tony's really shy,

안토니 박사님은 정말 겸손한 분입니다.

and it took a lot of convincing

박사님처럼 겸손하신 분에게서

to get somebody as modest as Tony

루크를 데려와도 좋다는 허락을 받느라

to allow us to bring Luke.

저희가 한참 설득을 해야 했습니다.

So Luke, you go to your communications professors --

루크, 커뮤니케이션 교수님들을 찾아뵙고

you're majoring in communications --

커뮤니케이션을 전공하니까

and you ask them for permission to come to TED,

TED에 나오겠다는 허락을 받을 때

which might have a little bit to do with communications,

뭐 그것도 커뮤니케이션하고 상관이 있는데

and what was their reaction?

어떤 반응들을 보이시던가요?

LM: Most of my professors were all for it,

루크: 대부분의 교수님들은 적극 호응해 주셨어요

and they said, "Bring pictures

다들 "사진도 좀 찍어오고

and show me the clips online," and "I'm happy for you."

동영상도 보여줘." "좋은 일이다." 그렇게들 말씀하셨어요.

There were a couple that were a little stubborn,

약간 엄격하신 분들이 두세 분 정도 계셨는데

but I had to talk to them.

어쨌든 말씀은 드렸죠.

I pulled them aside.

따로 잘 설득을 시켰습니다.

JE: Well, it's an honor and a privilege to meet you.

엔리케즈: 만나게 돼서 영광이었어요.
