In the last couple of years,

Now, for those of you who are not familiar with what a dead mall is,

it's basically a shopping mall

or it's abandoned and crumbling into ruin.

I started producing this series

このシリーズの 制作を始めたのは

in early 2015

2015年初頭でした

after going through kind of a dark period in my life

もう映画なんて撮りたくないという

where I just didn't want to create films anymore.

人生でも暗い時期を経た後でした

I put my camera away

カメラを捨てて

and I just stopped.

撮影を止めていたんです

So in 2015, I decided to make a short film about the Owings Mills Mall.

2015年にオーウィングス・ミルズ・モールの 短編映画を撮ることにしました

Owings Mills Mall opened in 1986.

オーウィングス・ミルズ・モールは 1986年に開店しました

I should know because I was there on opening day.

私が知っているのも当然で 開店初日に行ったからです

I was there with my family,

家族で出かけたんですが

along with every other family in Baltimore,

and you had to drive around

for 45 minutes

just to find a parking spot.

So if you can imagine,

that's not happening at the malls today.

My first mall job that I had as a teenager

was at a sporting goods store called Herman's World of Sports.

Maybe you remember.

You guys remember that?

(Laughter)

Yeah, so I worked in a lady's shoe store.

それからレディース靴の店や

I worked in a leather goods store,

革製品の店

and I also worked in a video store,

ビデオ屋でも働きました

and not being one who was very fond of the retail arts --

これはただ小売業が 好きでたまらなかったのではなく —

(Laughter)

I got fired from every single job.

何をやってもクビになったからです

(Laughter)

（笑）

In between these low-paying retail jobs,

そんな低賃金の小売業の合間に

I did what any normal teenager did

1990年代の普通の十代の若者なら 誰でもやっていたことを

in the 1990s.

私もしていました

I shoplifted.

万引きです

I'm just kidding.

冗談ですよ

I hung out with my friends at the mall.

友達とショッピングモールに 行ったんです

(Laughter)

Everyone's like, "Oh my God, what kind of talk is this?"

みんな「ひどいね 一体なんの話だ」って 顔をしていますね

(Laughter)

Hanging out at the mall could be fun, but it could be really lame, too,

モールをぶらつくのは 楽しい時も イマイチな時もありました

like sharing a cigarette with a 40-year-old unemployed mall rat

いつもモールにいる無職で40歳の男と １本のタバコを分け合ったりしました

who has put on black lipstick for the night

彼は夜になると 黒い口紅をつけているんです

while you're on your break from your crappy minimum wage job.

最低賃金のくだらないバイトの 休憩時間の話です

As I stand here today,

私がここにいる間にも

Owings Mills has been gutted

オーウィングス・ミルズは 内部が取り壊され

and it's ready for the wrecking ball.

鉄球で解体されるのを待つばかりです

The last time I was there, it was in the evening,

前回 私が行った時は夕暮れ時で

and it was about three days before they closed the mall for good.

モールが完全に閉鎖される ３日ほど前でした

And you kind of felt --

they never announced the mall was closing,

閉店のお知らせなんて ありませんでしたが

but you had this sort of feeling, this ominous feeling,

まるで行き止まりに向かうような

that something big was going to happen,

何か大きなことが起こりそうな

like it was the end of the road.

何だか不穏な感じがしました

It was a very creepy walk through the mall.

モールを歩くのは すごく不気味でした

So when I started producing "The Dead Mall Series,"

『The Dead Mall Series』を 作り始めて

I put the videos up onto YouTube,

YouTubeに投稿するようになりました

and while I thought they were interesting,

面白いとは思っていましたが

frankly I didn't think others would share the enthusiasm

正直 こんなに退屈で暗いテーマを

for such a drab and depressing topic.

熱心に支持してくれる人が いるとは思いませんでした

But apparently I was wrong,

でも私の読みは外れました

because a lot of people started to comment.

コメントしてくれる人が たくさんいたんです

And at first the comments were like --

最初の頃のコメントには

basically like, "Oh my God, that's the mall from my childhood.

こういうものが多かったです 「子供の頃にあったモールだ！

What happened?"

なんでこんなことに？」

And then I would get comments from people who were like,

その後 こんなコメントが 寄せられるようになりました

"There's a dead mall in my town. You should come and film it."

「私の街にも廃モールがある 撮影しに来たらいいよ」

So I started to travel around the mid-Atlantic region

それで こんな廃モールを撮影しながら 中部大西洋岸を

filming these dead malls.

旅するようになりました

Some were open.

開店しているものもあれば

Some were abandoned.

廃墟と化したものもありました

It was kind of always hard to get into the ones that were abandoned,

廃墟に入るのは いつも苦労しましたが

but I somehow always found a way in.

入り口は必ず見つかるものです

(Laughter)

The malls that are still open,

まだ閉まっていないモールには

they always do this weird thing -- like the dead malls.

必ず奇妙なことが起きます 廃モールと同じです

They'll have three stores left,

店舗が３つしか残っていないのに

but they try to spruce it up

見た目を小ぎれいに整えて

to make it appear like things are on the up-and-up.

すごく順調そうに見せるんです

For example,

you'll have an empty store

空き店舗が出ると

and they bring the gate down.

シャッターを閉めます

So at Owings Mills, for example, they put this tarp over the gate.

オーウィングス・ミルズでは そこにシートをかけるんです

Right?

And it's got a stock photo

of a woman who is so happy

幸せそうな女性が

and she's holding a blouse,

ブラウスを持って

and she's like --

こんな感じで ―

(Laughter)

And then there's a guy standing next to her, with, like,

さらに女性の隣にエスプレッソの カップを持った男性が

an espresso cup, and he's like --

こういう風に ―

(Laughter)

（笑）

And it says, "What brings you today?"

そして こう書いてあります 「今日は何をお求めに？」

(Laughter)

（笑）

I wanted to be scared and depressed.

「恐怖と憂鬱を感じようと思って

Thank you.

わざわざどうも」

So the comments just kept pouring in

ビデオに対するコメントが

on the videos,

次々に投稿されました

from all over the country, and then all over the world.

全国から その後 全世界からです

And I started to think, this could really be something,

それで これはものになるかもしれないと 考えるようになりました

but I had to get creative, because I'm like,

でも工夫する必要がありました

how long are people going to sit and watch me waddling through an empty mall?

無人のモールを うろつく私を どれだけ じっと見ていられると思います？

(Laughter)

So the original episodes I filmed with an iPhone.

最初の数回分は iPhoneで撮影しました

So I'd walk through the mall with an iPhone, and, you know.

モールの中をiPhone片手に 歩き回りました

Like that.

こんな風に

(Laughter)

（笑）

And security -- because malls, they don't like photography --

ショッピングモールは 撮影を嫌がるところが多いので

so the security would come up and be like, "Put that away," and I'm like, "OK."

警備員に「やめろ」と言われると 私は「わかったよ」と応えます

So I had to get creative and sneaky,

だから頭を使って こっそり撮る必要に迫られ

so I started using a hidden camera and different techniques

to get the footage that I needed,

and basically what I wanted to do

like it was a first-person experience,

put your headphones on watching the screen --

like a video game, basically.

I also started to use music,

collaborating with artists who create music called vaporwave.

「ヴェイパーウェイブ」の ミュージシャンとコラボしたんです

And vaporwave is a music genre

ヴェイパーウェイブというジャンルは

that emerged in the early 2010s among internet communities.

2010年代初めにインターネット上の コミュニティーから現れました

That's by an artist named Disconscious

アーティストは Disconscious

from an album he did called "Hologram Plaza."

So if you look that up, you can hear more of those tunes.

Vaporwave is more than an art form. It's like a movement.

ヴェイパーウェイブは単なる スタイルではなく ムーブメントです

It's nihilistic, it's angsty,

虚無的で不安に満ちていますが

but it's somehow comforting.

なぜか心が休まります

The whole aesthetic is a way of dealing with things you can't do anything about,

どうしようもないことの扱い方に その美学のすべてがあります

like no jobs, or sitting in your parents' basement eating ramen noodles.

例えば 仕事が無いとか 実家の地下室でラーメンをすすってるとか

Vaporwave came out of this generation's desire to express their hopelessness,

ヴェイパーウェイブは そんな世代の 絶望感を表現したいという願望から生まれました

the same way that the pre-internet generation did

sitting around in the food court.

One of my favorite malls

今まで行った中で

I've been to

お気に入りのモールの一つは

is in Corpus Christi, and it's called the Sunrise Mall.

コーパスクリスティにある サンライズ・モールというところです

When I was a kid,

子供の頃は

my favorite thing to do was watch movies,

映画を見るのが大好きで

and I used to watch movies over and over and over again.

何度も何度も 繰り返し見ていました

And one of my favorite films was "The Legend of Billie Jean."

大好きな映画に 『ビリージーンの伝説』がありました

Now, for those of you who have seen "The Legend of Billie Jean,"

見たことがある方には お分かりでしょうが

you'll know that it's a great film.

本当にいい映画なんです

I love it.

大好きです

And Helen Slater and Christian Slater --

ヘレン・スレイターと クリスチャン・スレイター

and if you didn't know, they are not related.

ちなみに ２人は親戚ではありません

Many people thought that they were brother and sister. They're not.

姉弟と思っていた人も たくさんいましたが 違います

But anyway, Sunrise Mall was used in the film as a filming location.

The mall is exactly the same as it was in 1984.

We're talking 32 years later. Let me show you.

I mean, honestly, it's exactly the same.

And there they are falling in the fountain,

and she runs up the stairs.

I always think in my head, if I owned a dead mall --

いつも思うんです 自分が廃モールの所有者だったらって

why don't they embrace their vintage look?

ヴィンテージ感を 利用しない手は無いでしょう

Put in a bar,

バーとか

like, put vegan food in the food court

フードコートにビーガン料理を置いて

and invite millennials and hipsters

ミレニアル世代や ヒップスターたちを招いて

to come and drink and eat,

食べたり飲んだりしてもらえば

and I guarantee you within three weeks

３週間もしないうちに

H&M and Levi's will be banging on the door trying to get space.

H&Mやリーバイスが出店したいと 押し寄せてくるはずです

I don't know why they don't do this,

なぜやらないのか わかりませんが

but apparently,

でも おそらく

it's only in my mind, it goes all day.

Anyway, in closing --

When they first asked me to do this talk,

I said,

These talks are supposed to be kind of inspiring and --

I remembered something, though.

I put my camera down three or four years ago,

and it took going to these malls

for me to be inspired again.

戻ってきたんです

And to see my audience

そして視聴者が世界中から

and people from all over the world writing me and saying,

私にコメントをくれて

"God, I love your videos,"

「このビデオ 大好き」と 言ってくれるなんて

is incredible.

本当に信じられません

I don't know how to even explain it,

１人のアーティストとして

as an artist,

どれほど心が満たされるか 言葉にできないほどです

how fulfilling that is.

If you would have told me a year ago

もしも１年前に

that I would be standing on this stage

私がこのステージに立って

talking to all of you wonderful people,

皆さんのような素晴らしい人たちに 話すことになると言われても

I would have never believed it.

信じられなかったでしょう

I am humbled

恐縮するとともに

and so appreciative.
