In the last couple of years,

I started producing this series

in early 2015

after going through kind of a dark period in my life

제 인생의 암흑기를 지난 뒤였죠.

where I just didn't want to create films anymore.

더 이상 영화를 만들지 않겠다고

I put my camera away

카메라도 치워버리고

and I just stopped.

전부 손을 놓았었죠.

So in 2015, I decided to make a short film about the Owings Mills Mall.

그러다 2015년에 오잉스 밀스 쇼핑몰에 대한

단편영상을 제작하기로 마음먹었습니다.

Owings Mills Mall opened in 1986.

오잉스 밀스 몰은 1986년에 개장했습니다.

I should know because I was there on opening day.

제가 이걸 아는 이유는 개장일에 갔었기 때문이에요.

I was there with my family,

저는 가족과 함께 갔고

along with every other family in Baltimore,

볼티모어에 사는 다른 가족들도 그곳에 있었습니다.

and you had to drive around

주차할 곳을 찾기 위해

for 45 minutes

just to find a parking spot.

So if you can imagine,

My first mall job that I had as a teenager

was at a sporting goods store called Herman's World of Sports.

Maybe you remember.

아마 기억이 나실 겁니다.

You guys remember that?

기억나시죠?

(Laughter)

Yeah, so I worked in a lady's shoe store.

네, 그 다음으로는 여성화 매장에도 있었고

I worked in a leather goods store,

가죽 제품 가게에서도 일했고

and I also worked in a video store,

그리고 비디오 가게에서도 일을 했습니다.

and not being one who was very fond of the retail arts --

그런데 제가 소매업에 어울리지 않는 사람이어서

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I got fired from every single job.

일하는 곳마다 해고를 당했죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

In between these low-paying retail jobs,

급여가 적은 이런 소매점들을 전전하다가

I did what any normal teenager did

1990년대의 평범한 청소년이면 다들 저지르는 그런 짓을

in the 1990s.

저도 저질렀습니다.

I shoplifted.

가게의 물건을 훔쳤죠.

(웃음)

I'm just kidding.

농담입니다.

그냥 친구들과 쇼핑몰에서 놀았어요.

I hung out with my friends at the mall.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Everyone's like, "Oh my God, what kind of talk is this?"

다들 이런 표정이네요. "어머, 세상에.. 강연이 뭐 이래?"

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Hanging out at the mall could be fun, but it could be really lame, too,

쇼핑몰에서 노는 건 재밌기는 하지만 한편 매우 변변찮은 일이기도 하죠.

like sharing a cigarette with a 40-year-old unemployed mall rat

가령, 정작 본인은 형편없는 급여를 받는 직업 때문에 파산할 지경인데

who has put on black lipstick for the night

밤만 되면 검은색 립스틱을 칠한

while you're on your break from your crappy minimum wage job.

40대의 할 일 없는 쇼핑몰 죽순이와 담배를 나눠 핀다고 생각해보세요.

(웃음)

As I stand here today,

지금 이 시점에

Owings Mills has been gutted

오잉스 밀스는 처참히 망했고

and it's ready for the wrecking ball.

완전히 문을 닫을 지경입니다.

The last time I was there, it was in the evening,

마지막으로 그곳에 갔을 때, 그때가 저녁이었는데요.

and it was about three days before they closed the mall for good.

완전히 문을 닫기 사흘 전쯤이었습니다.

And you kind of felt --

그때 느낌은 마치..

they never announced the mall was closing,

폐업을 공식적으로 발표하지는 않았지만

but you had this sort of feeling, this ominous feeling,

왠지 불길한 느낌이 들었죠.

that something big was going to happen,

뭔가 큰 일이 일어날 것 같은..

like it was the end of the road.

마치 막다른 길에 다다른 느낌이었죠.

It was a very creepy walk through the mall.

쇼핑몰을 걸어 다니기에도 매우 섬뜩했습니다.

Let me show you.

제가 보여드릴게요.

(Music)

So when I started producing "The Dead Mall Series,"

그래서 "죽은 쇼핑몰 시리즈"를 제작하기 시작하면서

I put the videos up onto YouTube,

저는 영상들을 유투브에 올렸습니다.

and while I thought they were interesting,

영상들이 흥미거리가 될 거라고 생각했지만

frankly I didn't think others would share the enthusiasm

솔직히 사람들이 이렇게 칙칙하고 음울한 주제에는

for such a drab and depressing topic.

관심이 없을 거라고 생각했죠.

But apparently I was wrong,

그런데 그게 아니었어요.

because a lot of people started to comment.

많은 사람들이 댓글을 달기 시작했습니다.

And at first the comments were like --

첫 댓글은 대충 이런 거였죠.

basically like, "Oh my God, that's the mall from my childhood.

이런 반응이었죠.

"와, 어릴 때 자주 가던 쇼핑몰인데 도대체 무슨 일이 일어난 거야?"

What happened?"

And then I would get comments from people who were like,

이런 댓글을 올리는 사람들도 있었습니다.

"There's a dead mall in my town. You should come and film it."

"우리 동네에도 죽은 쇼핑몰이 있어요. 와서 촬영하면 좋을 거 같아요."

So I started to travel around the mid-Atlantic region

그래서 저는 중부지역을 돌아다니며

filming these dead malls.

이런 죽은 쇼핑몰들을 찍기 시작했습니다.

Some were open.

영업중인 곳도 있었고

Some were abandoned.

버려진 곳도 있었죠.

It was kind of always hard to get into the ones that were abandoned,

사실 버려진 쇼핑몰에 들어가는 건 늘 어려웠지만

but I somehow always found a way in.

저는 항상 어떻게든 들어갔습니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

The malls that are still open,

아직 영업중인 쇼핑몰들은 항상 이런 이상한 일을 합니다.

they always do this weird thing -- like the dead malls.

거의 죽은 쇼핑몰처럼요.

They'll have three stores left,

상점이 세 곳만 남아 있는데도

but they try to spruce it up

그곳을 단장하려고 하는데요.

to make it appear like things are on the up-and-up.

쇼핑몰이 아직 성업중인 것처럼 보이려고 그러는 거죠.

For example,

예를 들어

you'll have an empty store

비어있는 상점이 있으면

and they bring the gate down.

그 상점의 문을 막아버립니다.

So at Owings Mills, for example, they put this tarp over the gate.

오윙스 밀스의 경우에는 문 위를 장막으로 덮어버렸죠.

Right?

이해되시죠?

And it's got a stock photo

그리고 거기에 광고 사진을 붙여둡니다.

of a woman who is so happy

매우 행복한 표정의 여성이

and she's holding a blouse,

블라우스를 들고 있죠.

and she's like --

이렇게 말이죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And then there's a guy standing next to her, with, like,

그리고, 그 옆에는 어떤 남성이 서 있는데

an espresso cup, and he's like --

에스프레소 잔을 들고 이런 표정을 하고 있습니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And it says, "What brings you today?"

그 위에는 이런 문구가 있죠. "무슨 일로 오셨습니까?"

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I wanted to be scared and depressed.

저한테 겁먹고 우울해지라는 거죠.

Thank you.

고맙게도 말이죠.

So the comments just kept pouring in

영상에 대한 댓글들이

on the videos,

계속 쏟아져 들어왔습니다.

from all over the country, and then all over the world.

전국적으로 시작하더니 전세계로부터 퍼져나갔죠.

And I started to think, this could really be something,

이게 뭔가 화제가 되겠다는 생각이 드는 한편으로는

but I had to get creative, because I'm like,

창의적인 것이 필요했습니다.

how long are people going to sit and watch me waddling through an empty mall?

텅 빈 쇼핑몰을 돌아다니는 영상을 계속 지켜보고 있지는 않을 테니까요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So the original episodes I filmed with an iPhone.

처음에는 아이폰으로 영상들을 촬영했습니다.

So I'd walk through the mall with an iPhone, and, you know.

아이폰을 들고 쇼핑몰 안을 돌아다니는 거죠.

Like that.

이렇게요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And security -- because malls, they don't like photography --

백화점 입장에서는 사진 찍히는 것을 좋아하지 않기 때문에

so the security would come up and be like, "Put that away," and I'm like, "OK."

경비가 "그만 찍으세요"라고 하면 전 그냥 알았다고 대답했죠.

그래서 저는 창의적이고 교활해져야 했습니다.

So I had to get creative and sneaky,

so I started using a hidden camera and different techniques

그래서 전 몰래 카메라와 다른 기법들을 이용해서

to get the footage that I needed,

필요한 장면을 찍기 시작했죠.

and basically what I wanted to do

그리고 기본적으로 제가 원했던 것은

was make the video

자기가 직접 경험하는 듯한 영상을 만드는 것이었습니다.

like it was a first-person experience,

like you are sitting --

여러분이 의자에 앉아서

put your headphones on watching the screen --

헤드폰을 쓰고 화면을 보면서도

it's like, you're there in the video,

마치 자신이 영상 안에 있는 것처럼 말이죠.

like a video game, basically.

기본적으로 비디오 게임같은 거죠.

I also started to use music,

저는 영상에 음악을 넣기 시작하면서

collaborating with artists who create music called vaporwave.

'베이퍼 웨이브(Vaporwave)'라는 장르의 작곡가들과 공동작업을 하기도 했습니다.

And vaporwave is a music genre

'베이퍼 웨이브'는 2010년대 초에 인터넷에서 생겨난 음악 장르인데요.

that emerged in the early 2010s among internet communities.

Here's an example.

예를 들면 이런 거예요.

That's by an artist named Disconscious

이 곡은 "Disconscious"라는 작곡가의 "Hologram Plaza"라는 앨범의 곡입니다.

from an album he did called "Hologram Plaza."

So if you look that up, you can hear more of those tunes.

그 앨범을 찾아보시면 이런 음악을 더 들어보실 수 있을 거예요.

Vaporwave is more than an art form. It's like a movement.

베이퍼 웨이브는 예술이라기보다 사회 운동에 더 가깝습니다.

It's nihilistic, it's angsty,

허무함과 불안감을 주는 음악이죠.

but it's somehow comforting.

그러나 뭔가 편안함도 느낍니다.

The whole aesthetic is a way of dealing with things you can't do anything about,

이 운동의 미학은 우리가 어쩔 수 없는 일들을 다루는 방법에 있습니다.

like no jobs, or sitting in your parents' basement eating ramen noodles.

실직했거나 부모님 댁 지하실에서 라면을 먹는 것 같은 일들이죠.

Vaporwave came out of this generation's desire to express their hopelessness,

베이퍼 웨이브는 요즘 세대의 절망을 표현하려는 욕망에서 시작됐습니다.

the same way that the pre-internet generation did

인터넷 이전 세대의 사람들이

sitting around in the food court.

푸드 코트에서 시간을 보냈던 것처럼 말이죠.

One of my favorite malls

제가 가본 쇼핑물 중에서

I've been to

가장 좋아하는 곳은

is in Corpus Christi, and it's called the Sunrise Mall.

텍사스주 코퍼스 크리스티 시에 있는 선라이즈 몰(Sunrise Mall)입니다.

When I was a kid,

제가 어렸을 적에

my favorite thing to do was watch movies,

영화 보는 걸 가장 좋아했습니다.

and I used to watch movies over and over and over again.

같은 영화를 계속 반복해서 보곤 했죠.

And one of my favorite films was "The Legend of Billie Jean."

그리고 제가 가장 좋아했던 영화는 "빌리 진의 전설"이란 영화였어요.

Now, for those of you who have seen "The Legend of Billie Jean,"

이 영화를 보신 분이라면

you'll know that it's a great film.

이 영화가 걸작이라는 걸 아실 겁니다.

I love it.

정말 좋아하는 영화죠.

And Helen Slater and Christian Slater --

영화 속의 헬렌 슬레이터와 크리스천 슬레이터는

and if you didn't know, they are not related.

모르셨겠지만, 서로 아무 관계도 아닙니다.

Many people thought that they were brother and sister. They're not.

다들 남매로 알고 있지만 사실은 그렇지 않죠.

여하튼, 영화에서는 선라이즈 몰도 촬영 장소로 사용되었습니다.

But anyway, Sunrise Mall was used in the film as a filming location.

The mall is exactly the same as it was in 1984.

그 쇼핑몰은 1984년의 그때 모습과 완전히 똑같습니다.

We're talking 32 years later. Let me show you.

32년 후의 모습은 이렇습니다. 한번 보시죠.

I mean, honestly, it's exactly the same.

And there they are falling in the fountain,

and she runs up the stairs.

This is a nice shot of the whole thing here.

I always think in my head, if I owned a dead mall --

why don't they embrace their vintage look?

예를 들면, 바 안에

Put in a bar,

like, put vegan food in the food court

채식주의자를 위한 음식 같은 것들을 푸드코트에 진열하고

and invite millennials and hipsters

밀레니엄 세대들과 유행에 앞선 사람들을 초대해서

to come and drink and eat,

먹고 마실 수 있게 한다면

and I guarantee you within three weeks

3주 안에 H&M과 리바이스가 매장 자리를 얻으려고

H&M and Levi's will be banging on the door trying to get space.

문을 쾅쾅 두드릴 거라고 장담합니다.

I don't know why they don't do this,

왜 다들 그렇게 하지 않는지 모르겠어요.

but apparently,

물론 이것들은

it's only in my mind, it goes all day.

제가 늘 머릿속에만 두고 있는 생각일 뿐이죠.

(Laughter)

Anyway, in closing --

아무튼, 마지막으로

(Laughter)

When they first asked me to do this talk,

제가 이 강연을 처음 부탁받았을 때

I said,

전 이렇게 말했습니다.

"Do you have the right person?"

"제대로 찾아오신 거 맞나요?"

These talks are supposed to be kind of inspiring and --

이런 강연들은 뭔가 감명 깊어야 하잖아요.

I remembered something, though.

그래도 하나 기억하는 게 있는데요.

I put my camera down three or four years ago,

저는 3, 4년 전에 카메라에서 손을 놓았지만

and it took going to these malls

이런 쇼핑몰들을 접하면서 다시 영감을 얻을 수 있었습니다.

for me to be inspired again.

And to see my audience

그리고 전세계에 있는 시청자들이

and people from all over the world writing me and saying,

"와, 영상들 마음에 들어요"라고 말하거나 글을 남기는 일이

"God, I love your videos,"

is incredible.

믿겨지지 않습니다.

I don't know how to even explain it,

예술가로서 그것이 얼마나 보람찬 일인지

as an artist,

how fulfilling that is.

말로 설명할 길이 없어요.

If you would have told me a year ago

만약 여러분이 1년 전의 저에게

that I would be standing on this stage

제가 이 강연무대에 서서

talking to all of you wonderful people,
