I'm here to tell you not just my story

मैं यहाँ आपको सिर्फ़ अपनी कहानी सुनाने नहीं आई हूँ

but stories of exceptional women from India whom I've met.

बल्कि उन असाधारण महिलाओं की कहानियाँ जिन्हें मैं भारत में मिली हूँ।

They continue to inspire me,

वे मेरे लिए प्रेरणा का स्रोत हैं,

teach me, guide me in my journey of my life.

मुझे सिखाती हैं, जीवन की इस राह में मुझे सही दिशा दिखाती हैं।

These are incredible women.

ये अद्भुत महिलाएं हैं।

They never had an opportunity to go to school,

इन महिलाओं को स्कूल जाने का कभी मौका नहीं मिला,

they had no degrees,

इनके पास कोई डिग्रियाँ नहीं थीं,

no travel, no exposure.

न वे कहीं घूमी हैं, न ही बाहरी दुनिया के बारे में जानती हैं।

Ordinary women who did extraordinary things

साधारण महिलाएं जिन्होंने असाधारण काम किए

with the greatest of their courage,

अपने पूरे साहस,

wisdom and humility.

समझदारी और विनम्रता के साथ।

These are my teachers.

वे मेरी शिक्षक हैं।

For the last three decades,

पिछले तीन दशकों से,

I've been working, staying and living in India

मैं भारत में काम कर रही हूँ वहीं रहती हूँ, वहीं जीती हूँ,

and working with women in rural India.

और ग्रामीण भारत की महिलाओं के साथ काम कर रही हूँ।

I was born and brought up in Mumbai.

मेरा जन्म और पालन-पोषण मुंबई में हुआ।

When I was in college,

जब मैं कॉलेज में थी,

I met Jayaprakash Narayan,

तब मेरी मुलाक़ात प्रसिद्ध गांधीवादी नेता

famous Gandhian leader

जयप्रकाश नारायण से हुई,

who inspired youth to work in rural India.

जिन्होंने युवकों को ग्रामीण भारत में काम करने को प्रेरित किया।

I went into the villages to work in rural India.

मैं ग्रामीण भारत में काम करने के लिए गाँवों में गई।

I was part of land rights movement,

मैं भूमि अधिकार आंदोलन

farmers' movement

किसान आंदोलन,

and women's movement.

और महिला आंदोलन का हिस्सा रही।

On the same line,

उसी राह पर चलते हुए,

I ended up in a very small village,

मैं एक छोटे से गाँव में पहुँची,

fell in love with a young, handsome, dynamic young farmer-leader

एक युवा, आकर्षक, ऊर्जस्वी किसान नेता के साथ प्यार हो गया

who was not very educated,

जो इतने पढ़े लिखे नहीं थे,

but he could pull the crowd.

पर वे लोगों को आकर्षित कर सकते थे।

And so in the passion of youth,

और इस तरह, जवानी के जोश में,

I married him

मैंने उनसे शादी कर ली,

and left Mumbai,

और मुंबई छोड़ दिया।

and went to a small village which did not have running water

और उस छोटे से गाँव में चली गई जहाँ नल में पानी भी नहीं था

and no toilet.

और न ही कोई शौचालय।

Honestly, my family and friends were horrified.

सच कहूँ, मेरा परिवार और मित्र डर गए थे।

(Laughter)

I was staying with my family,

मैं अपने परिवार के साथ रह रही थी,

with my three children in the village,

अपने तीन बच्चों के साथ गाँव में,

and one day,

और एक दिन,

a few years later one day,

कुछ सालों के बाद एक दिन,

a woman called Kantabai came to me.

कांताबाई नाम की महिला मेरे पास आई।

Kantabai said, "I want to open a saving account.

कांताबाई ने कहा, "मुझे बचत खाता खोलना है।

I want to save."

मुझे बचत करनी है।"

I asked Kantabai:

मैंने कांताबाई से पूछा:

"You are doing business of blacksmith.

"तुम लुहार का काम करती हो।

Do you have enough money to save?

तुम्हारे पास इतने पैसे हैं कि बचत कर सकोगी?

You are staying on the street.

तुम सड़क पर रहती हो।

Can you save?"

तुम पैसे बचा सकती हो?"

Kantabai was insistent.

कांताबाई हठी थी।

She said, "I want to save because I want to buy a plastic sheet

वह बोली, "मैं बचाना चाहती हूँ क्योंकि मॉनसून आने से पहले

before the monsoons arrive.

मुझे प्लास्टिक की चादर खरीदनी है।

I want to save my family from rain."

मुझे अपने परिवार को बारिश से बचाना है।"

I went with Kantabai to the bank.

मैं कांताबाई के साथ बैंक गई।

Kantabai wanted to save 10 rupees a day --

कांताबाई रोज़ के दस रूपए बचाना चाहती थी

less than 15 cents.

जो 15 सेंट से भी कम हैं।

Bank manager refused to open the account of Kantabai.

बैंक मैेनेजर ने कांताबाई का खाता खोलने से इनकार कर दिया।

He said Kantabai's amount is too small

उसने कहा कि कांताबाई की रकम बहुत छोटी थी

and it's not worth his time.

और उसके समय के लायक नहीं थी।

Kantabai was not asking any loan from the bank.

कांताबाई बैंक से कोई ऋण नहीं माँग रही थी।

She was not asking any subsidy or grant from the government.

सरकार से कोई अनुदान या सहायता नहीं माँग रही थी।

What she was asking was to have a safe place

वह बस अपनी मेहनत से कमाए पैसे को सुरक्षित रखने के लिए

to save her hard-earned money.

एक सुरक्षित जगह ही तो माँग रही थी।

And that was her right.

और वह उसका अधिकार था।

And I went --

और मैंने सोचा...

I said if banks are not opening the account of Kantabai,

मैंने कहा अगर बैंक कांताबाई का खाता नहीं खोल रहे,

why not start the bank

तो क्यों न मैं बैंक खोल दूँ

which will give an opportunity for women like Kantabai to save?

जिससे कांताबाई जैसी महिलाओं को बचाने का मौका मिलेगा

And I applied for the banking license to Reserve Bank of India.

और मैंने रिज़र्व बैंक ऑफ़ इंडिया से बैंकिंग लाइसेंस के लिए अर्ज़ी दी।

(Applause)

(तालियाँ)

No, it was not an easy task.

नहीं, वह कोई आसान काम नहीं था।

Our license was rejected --

हमारी अर्ज़ी नामंजूर कर दी गई...

(Laughter)

(हँसी)

on the grounds --

इस आधार पर...

Reserve Bank said that we cannot issue a license

रिज़र्व बैंक ने कहा कि वह ऐसे बैंक को लाइंसेंस नहीं दे सकता

to the bank whose promoting members who are nonliterate.

जिसे प्रोत्ससाहन करने वाले सदस्य अनपढ़ हैं।

I was terrified.

मैं डर गई।

I was crying.

मैं रो रही थी।

And by coming back home,

और घर वापस आने पर

I was continuously crying.

मैं लगातार रोती रही।

I told Kantabai and other women

मैंने कांताबाई और अन्य महिलाओं से कहा

that we couldn't get the license because our women are nonliterate.

कि हमें लाइसेंस नहीं मिल पाया क्योंकि हमारी महिलाएँ अनपढ़ हैं।

Our women said, "Stop crying.

एक महिला ने कहा, "रोना बंद करो।

We will learn to read and write

हम पढ़ना-लिखना सीखेंगी

and apply again, so what?"

और फिर अर्ज़ी देंगी, तो क्या हुआ?"

(Applause)

We started our literacy classes.

हमने साक्षरता कक्षाओं की शुरुआत की।

Every day our women would come.

महिलाएँ हर रोज़ आती।

They were so determined that after working the whole day,

वे इतनी दृढ़ थीं कि सारा दिन काम करने के बाद,

they would come to the class and learn to read and write.

वे कक्षा में आतीं ताकि पढ़ना-लिखना सीख सकें।

After five months,

पाँच महीनों के बाद,

we applied again,

हमने फिर से अर्ज़ी दी,

but this time I didn't go alone.

पर इस बार मैं अकेली नहीं गई।

Fifteen women accompanied me to Reserve Bank of India.

मेरे साथ पंद्रह महिलाएँ रिज़र्व बैंक गईं।

Our women told the officer of Reserve Bank,

हमारी महिलाओं ने रिज़र्व बैंक के अफ़सर से कहा,

"You rejected the license because we cannot read and write.

"आपने हमारा लाइसेंस नामंजूर कर दिया क्योंकि हम पढ़-लिख नहीं सकती।

You rejected the license because we are nonliterate."

आपने हमारा लाइसेंस नामंजूर कर दिया क्योंकि हम अनपढ़ हैं।"

But they said, "There were no schools when we were growing,

पर उन्होंने कहा, "जब हम बड़ी हो रही थी तो कोई स्कूल नहीं थे,

so we are not responsible for our noneducation."

तो अनपढ़ होने के लिए हम ज़िम्मेदार नहीं।"

And they said, "We cannot read and write,

और उन्होंने कहा, "हम पढ़-लिख नहीं सकती,

but we can count."

पर हम गिन सकती हैं।"

(Laughter)

(हँसी)

(Applause)

And they challenged the officer.

और उन्होंने अफ़सर को चुनौती दी।

"Then tell us to calculate the interest of any principal amount."

"तो हमसे किसी भी मूल धर पर ब्याज की गणना करने को कहिए।"

(Laughter)

"If we are unable to do it,

"अगर हम नहीं कर सकीं,

don't give us license.

तो हमें लाइसेंस मत देना।

Tell your officers to do it without a calculator

अपने अफ़सरों को बिना कैलकुलेटर की गणना करने को कहें

and see who can calculate faster."

और देखें कौन जल्दी करता है।"

(Applause)

Needless to say,

कहने की ज़रूरत नहीं है,

we got the banking license.

हमें बैंकिग लाइसेंस मिल गया।

(Laughter)

Today, more than 100,000 women are banking with us

आज, 1,00,000 से भी अधिक महिलाएँ हमारे साथ बैंकिग कर रही हैं

and we have more than 20 million dollars of capital.

और हमारे पास 2 करोड़ डॉलर की पूंजी है।

This is all women's savings,

ये सब महिलाओं की बचत है,

women capital,

महिलाओं की पूंजी है,

no outside investors asking for a business plan.

बिज़नेस प्लान माँगने वाला कोई बाहरी निवेशक नहीं है।

No.

नहीं।

It's our own rural women's savings.

यह हमारी ग्रामीण महिलाओं की बचत है।

(Applause)

I also want to say that yes,

मैं यह भी कहना चाहती थी कि हाँ,

after we got the license,

लाइसेंस मिलने के बाद,

today Kantabai has her own house

आज कांताबाई का अपना घर है

and is staying with her family

और वह अपने परिवार के साथ

in her own house for herself and her family.

अपने घर में रह रही है।

When we started our banking operations,

जब हमने अपना बैंकिंग का काम शुरू किया,

I could see that our women were not able to come to the bank

मुझे पता चल गया कि महिलाएँ बैंक नहीं आ सकती थीं

because they used to lose the working day.

क्योंकि दिन में वे काम करती थीं।

I thought if women are not coming to the bank,

मैंने सोचा अगर महिलाएँ बैंक में नहीं आ सकतीं,

bank will go to them,

बैंक तो उन तक जा सकता है,

and we started doorstep banking.

और हमने घर-घर जाकर बैंकिंग शुरू की।

Recently, we starting digital banking.

हाल ही में, हमने डिजिटल बैंकिंग शुरू की।

Digital banking required to remember a PIN number.

डिजिटल बैंकिग के लिए एक पिन नम्बर याद रखने की आवश्यकता थी।

Our women said, "We don't want a PIN number.

हमारी महिलाओं ने कहा "हमें पिन नम्बर नहीं चाहिए।

That's not a good idea."

यह तो अच्छा विचार नहीं है।"

And we tried to explain to them

और हमने उन्हें समझाने की कोशिश की

that maybe you should remember the PIN number;

कि शायद आप लोग पिन नम्बर याद कर सकती हैं;

we will help you to remember the PIN number.

उसे याद करने में हम आपकी मदद करेंगे।

They were firm.

वे दृढ़ थीं।

They said, "suggest something else,"

उन्होंने कहा, "कुछ और बताओ।"

and they --

और वे...

and they said, "What about thumb?"

और वे बोलीं, "अंगूठा कैसा रहेगा?"

I thought that's a great idea.

मैंने सोचा यह तो बढ़िया विचार है।

We'll link that digital banking with biometric,

हम उस डिजिटल बैंकिंग को बायोमेट्रिक से जोड़ देंगे,

and now women use the digital financial transaction

और अब महिलाएँ अंगूठे से ही

by using the thumb.

डिजिटल वित्तीय लेन-देन कर सकती हैं।

And you know what they said?

और जानते हैं उन्होंने क्या कहा?

They said, "Anybody can steal my PIN number

वे बोलीं, "मेरा पिन नम्बर कोई भी चुरा सकता है

and take away my hard-earned money,

और मेरा मेहनत से कमाया पैसा ले सकता है,

but nobody can steal my thumb."

पर मेरा अंगूठा कोई नहीं चुरा सकता।"

(Applause)

That reinforced the teaching which I have always learned from women:

उससे मैंने जो महिलाओं से सीखा है वह सीख और भी मजबूत हो जाती है :

never provide poor solutions to poor people.

गरीब लोगों को कभी बुरे समाधान न बताएँ।

They are smart.

वे चतुर हैं।

(Applause)

A few months later,

कुछ महीनों के बाद,

another woman came to the bank --

एक और महिला बैंक में आई...

Kerabai.

केराबाई।

She mortgaged her gold and took the loan.

उसने अपना सोना बंधक रखा और ऋण लिया,

I asked Kerabai, "Why are you mortgaging your precious jewelry

मैंने केराबाई से पूछा, "तुम अपने कीमती जेवर बंधक रखकर

and taking a loan?"

ऋण क्यों ले रही हो?"

Kerabai said, "Don't you realize that it's a terrible drought?

केराबाई ने कहा, "तुम्हें एहसास भी है कि भयानक सूखा पड़ा है?

There's no food or fodder for the animals.

जानवरों के लिए खाना और चारा नहीं है।

No water.

पानी भी नहीं।

I'm mortgaging gold to buy food and fodder for my animals."

अपने जानवरों के लिए खाना और चारा खरीदने के लिए मैं सोना बंधक रख रही हूँ।"

And then she asks me, "Can I mortgage gold and get water?"

और फिर उसने मुझे पूछा, "सोना बंधक रखकर पानी मिल सकता है?"

I had no answer.

मेरे पास कोई जवाब नहीं था।

Kerabai challenged me: "You're working in the village

केराबाई ने मुझे चुनौती दी "तुम गाँव में महिलाओं और वित्त के साथ

with women and finance,

काम करती हो,

but what if one day there's no water?

पर क्या होगा अगर एक दिन पानी ही न हो?

If you leave this village,

अगर हम यह गाँव छोड़ देंगे,

with whom are you going to do banking?"

तो तुम किसके साथ बैंकिंग करोगी?"

Kerabai had a valid question,

केराबाई का सवाल जायज़ था,

so in this drought,

तो इस सूखे में,

we decided to start the cattle camp in the area.

हमने क्षेत्र में मवेशी कैम्प शुरू करने का निर्णय लिया।

It's where farmers can bring their animals to one place

वहाँ पर किसान अपने जानवरों को लेकर आते

and get fodder and water.

और उन्हें चारा और पानी मिलता।

It didn't rain.

बारिश नहीं हुई।

Cattle camp was extended for 18 months.

मवेशी कैम्प को 18 महीनों तक बढ़ाया गया।

Kerabai used to move around in the cattle camp

केराबाई मवेशी कैम्प में घूमती थी

and sing the songs of encouragement.

और प्रोत्साहन के गीत गाया करती थी।

Kerabai became very popular.

केराबाई बहुत लोकप्रिय हो गई।

It rained and cattle camp was ended,

बारिश हुई और मवेशी कैम्प बंद कर दिया गया,

but after cattle camp ended,

पर मवेशी कैम्प की समाप्ति के बाद,

Kerabai came to our radio --

केराबाई हमारे रेडियो पर आई...

we have community radio

हमारे पास सामुदायिक रेडियो है

which has more than 100,000 listeners.

जिसके 1,00,000 से अधिक श्रोतागण हैं।

She said, "I want to have a regular show on the radio."

उसने कहा, "मुझे रेडियो पर नियमित शो करना है।"

Our radio manager said, "Kerabai, you cannot read and write.

हमारे रेडियो मैनेजर ने कहा, "केराबाई, तुम पढ़-लिख नहीं सकती।

How will you write the script?"

तुम स्क्रिप्ट कैसे लिखोगी?"

You know what she replied?

पता है उसने क्या जवाब दिया?

"I cannot read and write,

"मैं पढ़-लिख नहीं सकती,

but I can sing.

पर मैं गा तो सकती हूँ।

What's the big deal?"

इसमें कौन सी बड़ी बात है?"

(Laughter)

(हँसी)

And today,

और आज,

Kerabai is doing a regular radio program,

केराबाई नियमित रेडियो कार्यक्रम कर रही है,

and not only that,

और यही नहीं,

she's become a famous radio jockey

वह एक मशहूर रडियो जॉकी बन गई है

and she has been invited by all of the radios,

और उसे सभी रेडियो से निमंत्रित किया गया है,

even from Mumbai.

मुम्बई से भी।

She gets the invitation and she does the show.

उसे निमंत्रण मिलते हैं और वह शो करती है।

Kerabai has become a local celebrity.

One day I asked Kerabai,

"How did you end up singing?"

She said, "Shall I tell you the real fact?

वह बोली, "सच बताऊँ?

When I was pregnant with my first child,

जब मैं पहली बार गर्भवती हुई,

I was always hungry.

मुझे हमेशा भूख लगी रहती थी।

I did not have enough food to eat.

मेरे पास खाने को इतना भोजन नहीं था।

I did not have enough money to buy food,

मेरे पास भोजन खरीदने के लिए पर्याप्त पैसे नहीं थे,

and so to forget my hunger, I started singing."

और इसलिए अपनी भूख भुलाने के लिए, मैंने गाना शुरू कर दिया।"

So strong and wise, no?

कितनी प्रबल और चतुर, है न?

I always think that our women overcome so many obstacles --

मैं हमेशा सोचती हूँ कि हमारी महिलाएँ इतनी सारी बाधाओं को पार करती हैं...

cultural, social, financial --

सांस्कृतिक, सामाजिक, वित्तीय...

and they find out their ways.

और वे अपने रास्ते निकाल लेती हैं।

I would like to share another story:

मैं एक और कहानी बताना चाहूंगी :

Sunita Kamble.

सुनीता काम्बले।

She has taken a course in a business school,

उसने बिज़नेस स्कूल में एक कोर्स किया है,

and she has become a veterinary doctor.

और वह अब जानवरों की डॉक्टर है।

She's Dalit;

वह दलित है;

she comes from an untouchable caste,

वह हरिजन जाति से है,

but she does artificial insemination in goats.

पर वह बकरियों में कृत्रिम वीर्यारोपण करती है।

It is a very male-dominated profession

इस पेशे में अधिकतर पुरुष ही काम करते हैं

and it is all the more difficult for Sunita

और सुनीता के लिए और भी मुश्किल है

because Sunita comes from an untouchable caste.

क्योंकि सुनीता हरिजन है।

But she worked very hard.

पर उसने बहुत मेहनत की।

She did successful goat deliveries in the region

उसने हमारे क्षेत्र में सफलता से जानवरों के बच्चे पैदे करवाए

and she became a famous goat doctor.

और वह मशहूर बकरी डॉकटर बन गई।

Recently, she got a national award.

हाल ही में, उसे राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार मिला।

I went to Sunita's house to celebrate --

मैं सुनीता के घर खुशी मनाने गई...

to congratulate her.

उसे मुबारक देने।

When I entered the village,

जब मैं गाँव में दाखिल हुई,

I saw a big cutout of Sunita.

मैंने सुनीता की बड़ी सी तस्वीर देखी।

Sunita was smiling on that picture.

उस तस्वीर में सुनीता मुस्कुरा रही थी।

I was really surprised to see an untouchable,

गाँव में रहने वाली एक हरिजन,

coming from the village,

की तस्वीर गाँव के बाहर लगी हुई

having a big cutout at the entrance of the village.

देखकर मुझे सच में हैरानी हुई।

When I went to her house,

जब मैं उसके घर गई,

I was even more amazed

मुझे और भी हैरानी हुई

because upper caste leaders --

क्योंकि उच्च जाति के नेता...

men -- were sitting in the house, in her house,

पुरुष लोग... उसके घर में बैठे हुए थे,

and having chai and water,

और चाय-पानी पी रहे थे,

which is very rare in India.

जो भारत में बहुत कम दिखने को मिलता है।

Upper caste leaders do not go to an untouchable's house

उच्च जाति के नेता हरिजन के घर

and have chai or water.

चाय-पानी पीने नहीं जाते।

And they were requesting her

और वे उसे अनुरोध कर रहे थे

to come and address the gathering of the village.

कि गाँव में आकर सभा को संबोधित करे।

Sunita broke centuries-old caste conditioning in India.

सुनिता ने सदियों पुरानी जाति की परम्परा को तोड़ दिया।

Let me come to what the younger generations do.

मैं आपको बताती हूँ कि नई पीढ़ियाँ क्या करती हैं।

As I'm standing here --

मैं यहाँ खड़ी हूँ...

I'm so proud as I stand here,

यहाँ खड़े होने में मुझे बहुत गर्व है,

from Mhaswad to Vancouver.

म्हासवद से वैंकूवर।

Back home, Sarita Bhise --

उधर घर पर, सरीता भीसे...

she's not even 16 years old.

वह 16 साल की भी नहीं है,

She's preparing herself --

वह हमारे खेल कार्यक्रम का हिस्सा है...

she's a part of our sports program,

चैम्पियन कार्यक्रम,

Champions' program.

वह तैयारी कर रही है।

She's preparing herself to represent India in field hockey.

वह तैयारी कर रही है फ़ील्ड हॉकी में भारत का प्रतिनिधित्व करने की।

And you know where she's going?

और आप जानते हैं, वह कहाँ जा रही है?

She's going to represent in 2020 Olympics, Tokyo.

वह 2020 ऑलम्पिक्स में टोकयो जा रही है।

Sarita comes from a very poor shepherd community.

सरिता एक गरीब गडरिए समुदाय से है।

I am just -- I couldn't be more proud of her.

मैं बस... मुझे उस पर बहुत गर्व है।

There are millions of women like Sarita, Kerabai, Sunita,

सरिता, केराबाई, सुनीता जैसी लाखों महिलाएँ हैं,

who can be around you also.

जो आपके आसपास भी हो सकती हैं।

They can be all over the world,

वे सारे विश्व भर में हो सकती हैं,

but at first glance you may think that they do not have anything to say,

पर पहली नज़र में आप सोचेंगे कि उनके पास कुछ कहने को नहीं है,

they do not have anything to share.

उनके पास कुछ बताने को नहीं है।

You would be so wrong.

आपकी सोच बहुत ग़लत होगी।

I am so lucky that I'm working with these women.

मैं बहुत खुशकिस्मत हूँ कि मैं इन महिलाओं के साथ काम करती हूँ।

They are sharing their stories with me,

वे अपनी कहानियाँ मुझे सुनाती हैं,

they are sharing their wisdom with me,

अपना ज्ञान मेरे साथ बांटती हैं,

and I'm just lucky to be with them.

और मैं बहुत खुशकिस्मत हूँ कि उनके साथ हूँ।

20 years before --

बीस साल पहले...

and I'm so proud --

और मुझे इतना गर्व है...

we went to Reserve Bank of India

हम रिज़र्व बैंक ऑफ़ इंडिया गए

and we set up the first rural women's bank.

और हमने पहला ग्रामीण महिला बैंक स्थापित किया।

Today they are pushing me to go to National Stock Exchange

आज वे मुझे नेशनल स्टॉक एक्सचेंज की ओर धकेल रही हैं

to set up the first fund dedicated to micro rural women entrepreneurs.
