I'm here to tell you not just my story

मी येथे केवळ माझी कथा सांगण्यासाठी नव्हे

but stories of exceptional women from India whom I've met.

तर भारतात मला भेटलेल्या असामान्य स्त्रियांची गाथा ऐकवण्यासाठी आलेय.

They continue to inspire me,

त्या मला सतत प्रेरित करतात,

teach me, guide me in my journey of my life.

These are incredible women.

They never had an opportunity to go to school,

they had no degrees,

no travel, no exposure.

Ordinary women who did extraordinary things

with the greatest of their courage,

wisdom and humility.

These are my teachers.

या माझ्या शिक्षिका आहेत.

For the last three decades,

गेल्या ३ दशकांपासून,

I've been working, staying and living in India

मी भारतात काम करतेय, वास्तव्य करतेय आणि जगतेय

and working with women in rural India.

त्याचप्रमाणे ग्रामीण भागातील महिलांसोबत काम करतेय.

I was born and brought up in Mumbai.

मी मुंबईतच जन्मले आणि मोठी झाले.

When I was in college,

महाविद्यालयात शिकत असतांना,

I met Jayaprakash Narayan,

मी जयप्रकाश नारायण यांना भेटले,

famous Gandhian leader

प्रसिद्ध गांधीवादी नेते

who inspired youth to work in rural India.

ज्यांनी तरुणाईला ग्रामीण भारतात कार्य करण्यास प्रेरित केले.

I went into the villages to work in rural India.

भारताच्या ग्रामीण भागात काम करण्यासाठी मीही खेडोपाड्यांत गेले.

I was part of land rights movement,

farmers' movement

शेतकऱ्यांचे आंदोलन

and women's movement.

आणि स्त्रियांसाठीची चळवळ.

On the same line,

I ended up in a very small village,

fell in love with a young, handsome, dynamic young farmer-leader

who was not very educated,

but he could pull the crowd.

And so in the passion of youth,

I married him

and left Mumbai,

and went to a small village which did not have running water

Honestly, my family and friends were horrified.

I was staying with my family,

with my three children in the village,

and one day,

a few years later one day,

a woman called Kantabai came to me.

Kantabai said, "I want to open a saving account.

कांताबाई म्हणाली, "मला एक बचत खातं उघडायचं आहे.

I want to save."

मला पैसे जमवायचे आहेत."

I asked Kantabai:

मी कांताबाईला विचारलं:

"You are doing business of blacksmith.

"तुम्ही लोहारकाम करता.

Do you have enough money to save?

बचत करण्याजोगे पैसे तुमच्याकडे आहेत का?

You are staying on the street.

त्यात अजून तुम्ही उघड्यावर राहता.

Can you save?"

तुम्ही बचत करू शकाल?"

Kantabai was insistent.

कांताबाई ठाम होती.

She said, "I want to save because I want to buy a plastic sheet

ती म्हणाली, "मला प्लास्टिकचं छत घेण्यासाठी पैसे जमवायचे आहेत

before the monsoons arrive.

पावसाळा सुरु होण्याआधी.

I want to save my family from rain."

मला माझ्या कुटुंबाचं पावसापासून रक्षण करायचंय."

I went with Kantabai to the bank.

मी कांताबाई सोबत बँकेत गेले.

Kantabai wanted to save 10 rupees a day --

कांताबाईंना दररोज १० रुपये जमवायचे होते--

less than 15 cents.

१५ सेंटहून कमी.

Bank manager refused to open the account of Kantabai.

बँक व्यवस्थापकाने कांताबाईंचे खाते उघडण्यास नकार दिला.

He said Kantabai's amount is too small

तो म्हणाला की कांताबाईंची रक्कम फारच तुटपुंजी आहे

and it's not worth his time.

आणि त्यासाठी त्याच्याकडे वेळ नाही.

Kantabai was not asking any loan from the bank.

कांताबाई बँकेकडून कोणतेही कर्ज मागत नव्हती.

She was not asking any subsidy or grant from the government.

तसेच ती सरकारकडून सबसिडी अथवा अनुदानही मागत नव्हती.

What she was asking was to have a safe place

ती काय मागत होती तर एक सुरक्षित जागा

to save her hard-earned money.

तिने मेहनतीने कमवलेले पैसे जमवण्यासाठी.

And that was her right.

आणि तो तिचा अधिकार होता.

And I went --

आणि मी निघून गेले --

I said if banks are not opening the account of Kantabai,

मी म्हणाले की बँक जर कांताबाईंचे खाते उघडू देत नसेल,

why not start the bank

तर बँकच का सुरु करू नये

which will give an opportunity for women like Kantabai to save?

जी कांताबाईसारख्या महिलांना बचत करण्यासाठी संधी उपलब्ध करून देईल?

And I applied for the banking license to Reserve Bank of India.

आणि मी रिझर्व्ह बँक ऑफ इंडियाकडे बँकेच्या परवान्यासाठी अर्ज केला.

(Applause)

No, it was not an easy task.

नाही, हे अजिबात सोपे काम नव्हते.

Our license was rejected --

आमचा परवाना अर्ज नाकारण्यात आला --

on the grounds --

या आधारावर की --

Reserve Bank said that we cannot issue a license

रिझर्व्ह बँक म्हणालं की आम्ही अशा बँकेला परवाना देऊ शकत नाही

to the bank whose promoting members who are nonliterate.

जिचे प्रवर्तक सदस्य निरक्षर आहेत.

I was terrified.

मी हादरले.

I was crying.

मला रडू कोसळत होतं.

And by coming back home,

आणि घरी परतत असतांना

I was continuously crying.

मी हमसून हमसून रडत होते.

I told Kantabai and other women

मी कांताबाई आणि इतर महिलांना सांगितलं

that we couldn't get the license because our women are nonliterate.

की आपल्याला परवाना मिळू शकला नाही कारण आपल्या महिला निरक्षर आहेत.

Our women said, "Stop crying.

आमच्या महिला म्हणाल्या, "रडणं थांबवा.

We will learn to read and write

आम्ही लिहिणं आणि वाचणं शिकू

and apply again, so what?"

We started our literacy classes.

Every day our women would come.

आमच्या महिला दररोज येत असत.

They were so determined that after working the whole day,

they would come to the class and learn to read and write.

त्या साक्षरता वर्गाला यायच्या व लिहिणं आणि वाचणं शिकायच्या.

After five months,

पाच महिन्यांनी,

we applied again,

आम्ही पुन्हा परवाना अर्ज केला,

but this time I didn't go alone.

परंतु यावेळी मी एकटी गेले नाही.

Fifteen women accompanied me to Reserve Bank of India.

रिझर्व्ह बँक ऑफ इंडियाकडे जातांना माझ्यासोबत १५ महिला होत्या.

Our women told the officer of Reserve Bank,

आमच्या महिलांनी रिझर्व बँकेच्या अधिकाऱ्याला सांगितलं,

"You rejected the license because we cannot read and write.

"तुम्ही परवाना नाकारला कारण आम्हाला लिहिता-वाचता येत नाही.

You rejected the license because we are nonliterate."

तुम्ही परवाना नाकारला कारण आम्ही निरक्षर आहोत."

But they said, "There were no schools when we were growing,

परंतु त्या म्हणाल्या, "आम्ही मोठे होत असतांना शाळा नव्हत्या,

so we are not responsible for our noneducation."

म्हणून आमच्या अशिक्षितपणाला आम्ही जबाबदार नाहीत."

And they said, "We cannot read and write,

आणि पुढे म्हणाल्या, "आम्हाला लिहिता-वाचता येत नाही,

but we can count."

पण मोजता येतं."

And they challenged the officer.

"Then tell us to calculate the interest of any principal amount."

"If we are unable to do it,

"आम्ही हे करू शकलो नाही तर,

don't give us license.

"आम्हाला परवाना देऊ नका.

Tell your officers to do it without a calculator

तुमच्या अधिकाऱ्याला गणकयंत्र न वापरता हे करायला सांगा

and see who can calculate faster."

आणि आता बघूया हिशेब लवकर कोण करतं ते."

(Applause)

Needless to say,

हे सांगायची काही गरज नाही,

we got the banking license.

की आम्हाला बँकेचा परवाना मिळाला.

(Laughter)

Today, more than 100,000 women are banking with us

सध्या, १ लाखाहून जास्त महिला आमच्या बँकेसोबत व्यवहार करतात

and we have more than 20 million dollars of capital.

आणि आमच्याकडे २० दशलक्ष डॉलर्सपेक्षा जास्त भांडवल आहे.

This is all women's savings,

या सर्व महिलांच्या बचत ठेवी आहेत,

women capital,

no outside investors asking for a business plan.

It's our own rural women's savings.

I also want to say that yes,

मला देखील हे म्हणावंसं वाटतं की होय,

after we got the license,

आम्हाला परवाना मिळाल्यानंतर,

today Kantabai has her own house

आज कांताबाईकडे तिचं स्वतःचं घर आहे

and is staying with her family

आणि तिच्या कुटुंबासोबत राहतेय

in her own house for herself and her family.

तिच्या स्वतःसाठी आणि कुटुंबासाठी असलेल्या स्वमालकीच्या घरात.

When we started our banking operations,

जेव्हा आम्ही आमच्या बँकेचं कामकाज सुरु केलं,

I could see that our women were not able to come to the bank

because they used to lose the working day.

कारण त्यांना रोजंदारी गमवावी लागत होती.

I thought if women are not coming to the bank,

मी विचार केला की महिला जर बँकेत येत नाहीत,

bank will go to them,

तर बँक त्यांच्याकडे न्यावी,

and we started doorstep banking.

Recently, we starting digital banking.

Digital banking required to remember a PIN number.

Our women said, "We don't want a PIN number.

आमच्या महिला म्हणाल्या, "आम्हाला पिन क्रमांक नकोय.

That's not a good idea."

ही काही चांगली कल्पना नाही."

And we tried to explain to them

मग आम्ही त्यांस समजावून सांगितलं

that maybe you should remember the PIN number;

की कदाचित तुम्ही पिन क्रमांक लक्षात ठेवू शकाल;

we will help you to remember the PIN number.

पिन क्रमांक आठवावा यासाठी आम्ही तुम्हाला मदत करू.

They were firm.

पण त्या ठाम राहिल्या.

They said, "suggest something else,"

त्या म्हणाल्या, "काहीतरी दुसरं सुचवा,"

and they --

आणि त्या --

(Laughter)

and they said, "What about thumb?"

आणि त्या म्हणाल्या, "अंगठ्याबद्दल काय वाटतं?"

I thought that's a great idea.

मी विचार केला की ही एक छान कल्पना आहे.

We'll link that digital banking with biometric,

आपण डिजीटल बँकिंगला बायोमेट्रिकशी जोडूया,

and now women use the digital financial transaction

by using the thumb.

And you know what they said?

They said, "Anybody can steal my PIN number

and take away my hard-earned money,

but nobody can steal my thumb."

पण माझा अंगठा कदापि चोरू शकणार नाही."

That reinforced the teaching which I have always learned from women:

यामुळे त्या शिकवणुकीला बळ मिळालं जे मी नेहमीच या महिलांकडून शिकत आलेय:

never provide poor solutions to poor people.

गरीब लोकांना कधीच दुय्यम दर्जाचे उपाय सुचवू नका.

They are smart.

ते चलाख असतात.

A few months later,

काही महिन्यांनंतर,

another woman came to the bank --

दुसरी महिला बँकेत आली --

Kerabai.

केराबाई.

She mortgaged her gold and took the loan.

तिने तिचे दागिने गहाण ठेवून कर्ज काढलं होतं.

I asked Kerabai, "Why are you mortgaging your precious jewelry

मी केराबाईला विचारलं, "तुम्ही तुमचे मौल्यवान दागिने गहाण ठेवून

and taking a loan?"

कर्ज का काढत आहात?"

Kerabai said, "Don't you realize that it's a terrible drought?

केराबाई म्हणाली, "किती भयंकर दुष्काळ पडलाय दिसतंय न तुम्हाला?

There's no food or fodder for the animals.

गुरांसाठी अन्न किंवा वैरणाचा तुटवडा आहे.

No water.

पाण्याचा एक थेंबही नाही.

I'm mortgaging gold to buy food and fodder for my animals."

माझ्या जनावरांसाठी अन्न-चारा विकत घेता यावा म्हणून मी सोनं गहाण ठेवतेय."

And then she asks me, "Can I mortgage gold and get water?"

आणि पुढे ती मला विचारते, "मी सोनं गहाण ठेवून पाणी मिळवू शकेन का?"

I had no answer.

माझ्याकडे उत्तर नव्हतं.

Kerabai challenged me: "You're working in the village

केराबाईने मला आव्हान दिलं: "तुम्ही या खेड्यात काम करताय

with women and finance,

महिला आणि आर्थिक बळाच्या आधारे,

but what if one day there's no water?

पण एक दिवस इथलं पाणीच नाहीसं झालं तर काय?

If you leave this village,

जर हे खेडे सोडून गेलात,

with whom are you going to do banking?"

तर तुम्ही कोणासोबत बँकिंग करणार आहात?"

Kerabai had a valid question,

केराबाईचा सवाल रास्त होता,

so in this drought,

म्हणून त्या दुष्काळात,

we decided to start the cattle camp in the area.

आम्ही त्या भागात पशुधन सहायता छावणी सुरु करायचं ठरवलं.

It's where farmers can bring their animals to one place

जिथे शेतकरी त्यांची गुरेढोरे एकाच ठिकाणी आणू शकतील

and get fodder and water.

आणि चारा व पाणी मिळवू शकतील.

It didn't rain.

अखेर पाऊस आलाच नाही.

Cattle camp was extended for 18 months.

पशुधन सहायता छावणी तब्बल १८ महिने लांबणीवर पडली.

Kerabai used to move around in the cattle camp

केराबाई पशुधन छावणीत फेरफटका मारत असे

and sing the songs of encouragement.

आणि प्रोत्साहनपर गाणी गात असे.

Kerabai became very popular.

केराबाई अत्यंत लोकप्रिय झाल्या.

It rained and cattle camp was ended,

अंततः पाउस पडला आणि पशुधन छावणी बंद झाली.

but after cattle camp ended,

पण पशुधन सहायता छावणी बंद झाल्यावर,

Kerabai came to our radio --

केराबाई आकाशवाणी केंद्रावर आल्या --

we have community radio

आमच्या समूहासाठी एक आकाशवाणी केंद्र आहे

which has more than 100,000 listeners.

ज्याचा १ लाखाहून अधिक श्रोतृवर्ग आहे.

She said, "I want to have a regular show on the radio."

ती म्हणाली, "मला आकाशवाणीवर नियमितपणे एक कार्यक्रम करायचा आहे."

Our radio manager said, "Kerabai, you cannot read and write.

आमच्या आकाशवाणी केंद्राचे संचालक म्हणाले, "केराबाई, तुला लिहिता-वाचता येत नाही.

How will you write the script?"

तू पटकथा कशी लिहशील मग?"

You know what she replied?

तिने काय उत्तर दिलं माहितीये?

"I cannot read and write,

"मला लिहिता-वाचता येत नाही,

but I can sing.

पण मी गाऊ तर शकते ना!

What's the big deal?"

त्यात विशेष असं काय आहे?"

(Laughter)

And today,

आणि आज,

Kerabai is doing a regular radio program,

केराबाई आकाशवाणीवर नियमितपणे एक कार्यक्रम करतेय,

and not only that,

आणि फक्त एवढंच नाही,

she's become a famous radio jockey

ती एक प्रसिद्ध रेडिओ जॉकी झालीय

and she has been invited by all of the radios,

व तिला सर्व आकाशवाणी केंद्रांकडून बोलावणं येत आलेलं आहे,

even from Mumbai.

मुंबईहून सुद्धा.

She gets the invitation and she does the show.

तिला निमंत्रण येतं आणि ती कार्यक्रम सादर करते.

Kerabai has become a local celebrity.

केराबाई एक स्थानिक सेलिब्रेटी बनलेली आहे.

One day I asked Kerabai,

एके दिवशी मी केराबाईला विचारलं,

"How did you end up singing?"

"तू एकाएकी गायनाकडे कसं वळलीस?"

She said, "Shall I tell you the real fact?

ती म्हणाली, "मी तुम्हाला खरी वस्तुस्थिती सांगू?

When I was pregnant with my first child,

मी जेव्हा पहिल्यांदा गरोदर होते,

I was always hungry.

तेव्हा नेहमीच उपाशी असायचे.

I did not have enough food to eat.

मला खायला पुरेसे अन्न नव्हते.

I did not have enough money to buy food,

अन्न विकत घ्यायला माझ्याकडे पुरेसे पैसे नव्हते,

and so to forget my hunger, I started singing."

आणि त्या भुकेचा विसर पडावा म्हणून मी गायला सुरवात केली."

So strong and wise, no?

किती सामर्थ्य आणि सूज्ञपणा आहे न?

I always think that our women overcome so many obstacles --

मी नेहमीच असा विचार करते की आमच्या महिला सर्व अडथळ्यांवर मात करतात --

cultural, social, financial --

सांस्कृतिक, सामाजिक, आर्थिक --

and they find out their ways.

I would like to share another story:

Sunita Kamble.

सुनिता कांबळे.

She has taken a course in a business school,

and she has become a veterinary doctor.

She's Dalit;

ती दलित आहे;

she comes from an untouchable caste,

but she does artificial insemination in goats.

It is a very male-dominated profession

and it is all the more difficult for Sunita

because Sunita comes from an untouchable caste.

But she worked very hard.

She did successful goat deliveries in the region

I went to Sunita's house to celebrate --

When I entered the village,

I saw a big cutout of Sunita.

Sunita was smiling on that picture.

I was really surprised to see an untouchable,

coming from the village,

having a big cutout at the entrance of the village.

गावाच्या प्रवेशद्वारातच तिचं एक भलंमोठं चित्र होतं.

When I went to her house,

मी जेव्हा तिच्या घरी गेले,

I was even more amazed

मी अजून थक्क झाले

because upper caste leaders --

कारण उच्च जातीचे नेते --

men -- were sitting in the house, in her house,

माणसं -- तिच्या घरात बसलेले होते,

and having chai and water,

आणि चहा-पाणी घेत होते,

which is very rare in India.

हे भारतातील अतिशय अपवादात्मक दृश्य होतं.

Upper caste leaders do not go to an untouchable's house

उच्च जातीतील नेतेमंडळी अस्पृश्यांच्या घरी जात नाहीत

and have chai or water.

चहा-पाणी पित नाहीत.

And they were requesting her

आणि ते मात्र तिला विनंती करत होते

to come and address the gathering of the village.

की तू यावं आणि जमलेल्या गावकऱ्यांना संबोधित करावं.

Sunita broke centuries-old caste conditioning in India.

सुनिताने भारतातील शतकानुशतके जुनी जातीव्यवस्था मोडीत काढली.

Let me come to what the younger generations do.

मला बघायचं आहे युवा पिढी काय करतेय ते.

As I'm standing here --

जशी मी आता इथे उभी आहे --

I'm so proud as I stand here,

मला अभिमान वाटतो की मी इथे आलेय,

from Mhaswad to Vancouver.

म्हसवड ते व्हॅन्कुव्हर.

Back home, Sarita Bhise --

पुन्हा घराकडे जाऊया, सरिता भिसे --

she's not even 16 years old.

जिने अद्याप सोळावं वयही गाठलं नाही.

She's preparing herself --

ती मनापासून तयारी करतेय --

she's a part of our sports program,

She's going to represent in 2020 Olympics, Tokyo.

Sarita comes from a very poor shepherd community.

सरिता खूपच गरीब अशा धनगर समाजातली आहे.

I am just -- I couldn't be more proud of her.

मला यापेक्षा आणखी -- तिच्याबद्दल अभिमान कसा वाटू शकेल.

There are millions of women like Sarita, Kerabai, Sunita,

सरिता, केराबाई, सुनिता इ. सारख्या लाखो स्त्रिया आहेत,

who can be around you also.

ज्या तुमच्या सभोवतालीही असू शकतील.

They can be all over the world,

संपूर्ण जगभरातही असू शकतील,

but at first glance you may think that they do not have anything to say,

पण पहिल्या दृष्टिक्षेपात तुम्ही विचार कराल की त्यांच्याकडे सांगण्यासारखे काहीही नाही,

they do not have anything to share.

व्यक्त करण्यासारखे काहीही नाही,

You would be so wrong.

तुम्ही चुकीचे असू शकता.

I am so lucky that I'm working with these women.

मी खूप नशीबवान आहे की मी या महिलांसोबत काम करतेय.

They are sharing their stories with me,

त्या त्यांचे अनुभव मला ऐकवतात,

they are sharing their wisdom with me,

त्यांचं जाणतेपण मला सांगतात,

and I'm just lucky to be with them.

20 years before --

२० वर्षांपूर्वी --

and I'm so proud --

आणि मला खूप अभिमान वाटतो --

we went to Reserve Bank of India

आम्ही रिझर्व्ह बँक इंडियाकडे अर्ज केला

and we set up the first rural women's bank.

आणि आम्ही ग्रामीण महिलांसाठी पहिल्या बँकेची स्थापना केली.

Today they are pushing me to go to National Stock Exchange

सध्या त्या मला नॅशनल स्टॉक एक्सचेंजकडे जायचा आग्रह करत आहेत

to set up the first fund dedicated to micro rural women entrepreneurs.

They are pushing me to set up

the first small finance women's bank in the world.

And as one of them said,

"My courage is my capital."

"माझं धैर्य हेच माझं भांडवल आहे."

And I say here,

आणि मी इथं म्हणतेय,

their courage is my capital.

त्यांचं धैर्य हे माझं भांडवल आहे.

And if you want,

आणि तुम्हाला वाटत असेल तर

it can be yours also.
