I'm here to tell you not just my story

ഞാൻ ഇവിടെ നിൽക്കുന്നത് എന്റെ കഥ പറയാൻ മാത്രമല്ല,

but stories of exceptional women from India whom I've met.

ഞാൻ കണ്ടുമുട്ടിയ അസാധാരണക്കാരായ ഇന്ത്യൻ സ്ത്രീകളുടെ കഥ പറയാൻ കൂടിയാണ്.

They continue to inspire me,

teach me, guide me in my journey of my life.

These are incredible women.

They never had an opportunity to go to school,

അവർക്കൊരിക്കലും സ്കൂളിൽ പോകാൻ അവസരം ലഭിച്ചിട്ടില്ല

they had no degrees,

അവർക്ക് ഒരു ഡിഗ്രിയും ഇല്ല

no travel, no exposure.

Ordinary women who did extraordinary things

അവർ അങ്ങേയറ്റത്തെ ധൈര്യവും അറിവും വിനയവും

with the greatest of their courage,

കൊണ്ട് അസാധാരണ കാര്യങ്ങൾ

wisdom and humility.

ചെയ്ത സാധാരണ സ്ത്രീകൾ ആണ്.

These are my teachers.

ഇവർ എന്റെ അധ്യാപകർ ആണ്.

For the last three decades,

കഴിഞ്ഞ മൂന്നു ദശാബ്ദങ്ങളായി ഞാൻ

I've been working, staying and living in India

ഇന്ത്യയിൽ ജോലി ചെയ്യുകയും താമസിക്കുകയും ജീവിക്കുകയും

and working with women in rural India.

ഗ്രാമീണ ഇന്ത്യൻ സ്ത്രീകളോടൊപ്പം പ്രവർത്തിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.

I was born and brought up in Mumbai.

ഞാൻ മുംബൈയിൽ ആണ് ജനിച്ചതും വളർന്നതും.

When I was in college,

കോളേജിൽ പഠിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഞാൻ

I met Jayaprakash Narayan,

ജയപ്രകാശ് നാരായണൻ എന്ന പ്രശസ്തനായ

famous Gandhian leader

ഗാന്ധിയൻ നേതാവിനെ കണ്ടുമുട്ടി.

who inspired youth to work in rural India.

അദ്ദേഹം ചെറുപ്പക്കാരെ ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഗ്രാമങ്ങളിൽ

പോയി പ്രവർത്തിക്കാൻ പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ ഞാൻ ഗ്രാമീണ

I went into the villages to work in rural India.

ഇന്ത്യയ്ക്കായി പ്രവർത്തിക്കാൻ

ഗ്രാമങ്ങളിലേക്ക് പോയി.

I was part of land rights movement,

അങ്ങനെ ഞാൻ ഭൂ അവകാശസമരത്തിന്റെയും

farmers' movement

കർഷകസമരത്തിന്റെയും വനിതാ പ്രസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെയും

and women's movement.

ഒക്കെ ഭാഗമായി.

On the same line,

അതിനിടയിൽ തന്നെ

I ended up in a very small village,

ഒരു ചെറിയ ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ എത്തിപ്പെട്ടു

fell in love with a young, handsome, dynamic young farmer-leader

അവിടെ വെച്ച് ഞാൻ ചെറുപ്പക്കാരനും സുന്ദരനും

ഊർജസ്വലനുമായ ഒരു കർഷക നേതാവുമായി പ്രണയത്തിലായി

who was not very educated,

അധികം വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം ഇല്ലെങ്കിലും

but he could pull the crowd.

അദ്ദേഹം ഒരു മികച്ച

സംഘാടകൻ ആയിരുന്നു.

And so in the passion of youth,

അങ്ങനെ ചെറുപ്പത്തിന്റെ

I married him

ആവേശത്തിൽ ഞാൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ വിവാഹം

and left Mumbai,

and went to a small village which did not have running water

and no toilet.

Honestly, my family and friends were horrified.

സത്യത്തിൽ എന്റെ വീട്ടുകാരും കൂട്ടുകാരും എല്ലാം പേടിച്ചു പോയി.

(Laughter)

(ചിരിക്കുന്നു )

I was staying with my family,

ഞാൻ എന്റെ കുടുംബത്തോടൊപ്പം,

with my three children in the village,

മൂന്നു കുട്ടികളോടൊപ്പം ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ കഴിയുകയായിരുന്നു

and one day,

ഒരു ദിവസം,

a few years later one day,

വർഷങ്ങൾക്കു ശേഷം ഒരു ദിവസം

a woman called Kantabai came to me.

കാന്താബായ് എന്ന സ്ത്രീ എന്നെ കാണാൻ വന്നു.

Kantabai said, "I want to open a saving account.

"എനിക്ക് ഒരു സേവിങ് അക്കൗണ്ട് തുറക്കണം ", കാന്താബായ് പറഞ്ഞു

I want to save."

"എനിക്ക് സമ്പാദിക്കണം".

I asked Kantabai:

ഞാൻ കാന്തഭായിയോട് ചോദിച്ചു,

"You are doing business of blacksmith.

നിങ്ങൾ കൊല്ലപ്പണി

ചെയ്യുന്ന ആളല്ലേ,

Do you have enough money to save?

സമ്പാദിക്കാനൊക്കെ പണം കാണുമോ?

You are staying on the street.

നിങ്ങൾ തെരുവിൽ അല്ലേ കഴിയുന്നത്?

Can you save?"

പിന്നെ എങ്ങനെ സമ്പാദിക്കും?

Kantabai was insistent.

പക്ഷേ കാന്താബായ് ഉറച്ചു നിന്നു.

She said, "I want to save because I want to buy a plastic sheet

അവർ പറഞ്ഞു, "ഞാൻ സമ്പാദിക്കുന്നത് മഴയ്ക്ക് മുൻപേ

before the monsoons arrive.

ഒരു പ്ലാസ്റ്റിക് ഷീറ്റ് വാങ്ങാനാണ്. എനിക്ക്

I want to save my family from rain."

I went with Kantabai to the bank.

ഞാൻ കാന്താബായിയോടൊപ്പം ഒരു ബാങ്കിൽ പോയി.

Kantabai wanted to save 10 rupees a day --

കാന്താ ഭായിക്ക് ദിവസം 10 രൂപ സേവ് ചെയ്യണം.

less than 15 cents.

അമേരിക്കൻ നാണ്യത്തിലാണെങ്കിൽ 15 സെന്റിലും താഴെ.

Bank manager refused to open the account of Kantabai.

ബാങ്ക് മാനേജർ അക്കൗണ്ട് തുടങ്ങാൻ തയ്യാറായില്ല.

He said Kantabai's amount is too small

and it's not worth his time.

Kantabai was not asking any loan from the bank.

കാന്താഭായ് ബാങ്കിൽ നിന്ന് ലോൺ അല്ല ചോദിച്ചത്.

She was not asking any subsidy or grant from the government.

What she was asking was to have a safe place

to save her hard-earned money.

And that was her right.

And I went --

ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞു "ബാങ്കുകൾ കാന്താബായിക്ക്

I said if banks are not opening the account of Kantabai,

അക്കൗണ്ട് തുറന്നു കൊടുക്കുന്നില്ലെങ്കിൽ

why not start the bank

എന്തുകൊണ്ട് നമുക്ക് ഒരു ബാങ്ക് തുടങ്ങിക്കൂടാ,

which will give an opportunity for women like Kantabai to save?

കാന്താബായിയെ പോലുള്ള സ്ത്രീകൾക്ക്

സമ്പാദിക്കാനുള്ള അവസരം അത് നല്കുമല്ലോ

And I applied for the banking license to Reserve Bank of India.

ഞാൻ റിസേർവ് ബാങ്കിൽ ബാങ്കിംഗ് ലൈസൻസിനുള്ള അപേക്ഷ നൽകി.

(Applause)

No, it was not an easy task.

അത് ഒരു എളുപ്പമുള്ള കാര്യമായിരുന്നില്ല.

Our license was rejected --

on the grounds --

Reserve Bank said that we cannot issue a license

to the bank whose promoting members who are nonliterate.

"പ്രൊമോട്ടേഴ്സ് എല്ലാം അക്ഷരാഭ്യാസം ഇല്ലാത്തവർ ആയതിനാൽ

നിങ്ങൾക്ക് ബാങ്കിംഗ് ലൈസൻസ് തരാൻ പറ്റില്ല".

I was terrified.

ഞാൻ പേടിച്ചു പോയി.

I was crying.

ഞാൻ കരഞ്ഞു പോയി.

And by coming back home,

വീട്ടിൽ എത്തിയ ശേഷവും

I was continuously crying.

ഞാൻ കരഞ്ഞു കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു

I told Kantabai and other women

നമ്മുടെ സ്ത്രീകൾ നിരക്ഷരർ ആയത്

that we couldn't get the license because our women are nonliterate.

കൊണ്ട് നമുക്ക് ലൈസൻസ് കിട്ടില്ല എന്ന കാര്യം ഞാൻ

കാന്താഭായിയോടും മറ്റു സ്ത്രീകളോടും പറഞ്ഞു.

Our women said, "Stop crying.

"കരയാതിരിക്കൂ " ഒരു സ്ത്രീ പറഞ്ഞു.

We will learn to read and write

"അതിനെന്താ? ഞങ്ങൾ എഴുത്തും വായനയും പഠിക്കാം.

and apply again, so what?"

എന്നിട്ട് വീണ്ടും ലൈസൻസിന് അപേക്ഷിക്കാം".

(Applause)

(കരഘോഷം )

We started our literacy classes.

ഞങ്ങൾ സാക്ഷരത ക്ലാസ്സ്‌ ആരംഭിച്ചു.

Every day our women would come.

എല്ലാ ദിവസവും സ്ത്രീകൾക്ക് വരണമായിരുന്നു.

They were so determined that after working the whole day,

അത്രമേൽ നിശ്ചയ ദാർഢ്യം ഉള്ളവർ ആയതുകൊണ്ട്

ദിവസം മുഴുവൻ ജോലിചെയ്തശേഷം അവർ

they would come to the class and learn to read and write.

എഴുത്തും വായനയും പഠിക്കാനായി ക്ലാസ്സിൽ വന്നു.

After five months,

അഞ്ച് മാസത്തിനു ശേഷം,

we applied again,

ഞങ്ങൾ വീണ്ടും ലൈസൻസിന് അപേക്ഷിച്ചു,

but this time I didn't go alone.

പക്ഷേ ഇത്തവണ ഞാൻ തനിച്ചല്ല പോയത്.

Fifteen women accompanied me to Reserve Bank of India.

പതിനഞ്ച് സ്ത്രീകൾ എന്നോടൊപ്പം റിസേർവ് ബാങ്കിൽ വന്നു.

Our women told the officer of Reserve Bank,

ഞങ്ങളുടെ സ്ത്രീകൾ റിസേർവ് ബാങ്കിലെ ഓഫീസറോട് പറഞ്ഞു,

"You rejected the license because we cannot read and write.

"എഴുത്തും വായനയും അറിയാത്തത് കൊണ്ടല്ലേ

നിങ്ങൾ ഞങ്ങൾക്ക് ലൈസൻസ് തരാഞ്ഞത്?

You rejected the license because we are nonliterate."

ഞങ്ങൾ നിരക്ഷരർ ആയതു കൊണ്ടല്ലേ നിങ്ങൾ ലൈസൻസ് തരാഞ്ഞത്

അവർ പറഞ്ഞു "ഞങ്ങൾ വളർന്ന സമയത്ത് സ്കൂളുകൾ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല

But they said, "There were no schools when we were growing,

so we are not responsible for our noneducation."

അതുകൊണ്ട് ഞങ്ങൾ പഠിക്കാത്തതിന് ഞങ്ങൾ അല്ല ഉത്തരവാദികൾ

And they said, "We cannot read and write,

And they challenged the officer.

don't give us license.

Tell your officers to do it without a calculator

and see who can calculate faster."

Needless to say,

പറയേണ്ട കാര്യമില്ലല്ലോ?

we got the banking license.

ഞങ്ങൾക്ക് ബാങ്കിംഗ് ലൈസൻസ് കിട്ടി.

(Laughter)

Today, more than 100,000 women are banking with us

ഇന്ന് ഒരു ലക്ഷത്തിൽ പരം സ്ത്രീകൾ ഞങ്ങൾക്കൊപ്പം ബാങ്കിംഗ് ചെയ്യുന്നു.

and we have more than 20 million dollars of capital.

ഞങ്ങൾക്ക് 20ലക്ഷം ഡോളറിൽ കൂടുതൽ മൂലധനം ഉണ്ട്

This is all women's savings,

no outside investors asking for a business plan.

I also want to say that yes,

after we got the license,

When we started our banking operations,

I could see that our women were not able to come to the bank

because they used to lose the working day.

I thought if women are not coming to the bank,

bank will go to them,

ബാങ്ക് അവരുടെ അടുത്തേക്ക് പോയാലോ എന്ന് ഞാൻ ആലോചിച്ചു

and we started doorstep banking.

അങ്ങനെ ഞങ്ങൾ ഡോർ സ്റ്റെപ് ബാങ്കിംഗ് തുടങ്ങി.

Recently, we starting digital banking.

അടുത്തിടെ ഞങ്ങൾ ഡിജിറ്റൽ ബാങ്കിംഗ് തുടങ്ങി

Digital banking required to remember a PIN number.

Our women said, "We don't want a PIN number.

That's not a good idea."

And we tried to explain to them

that maybe you should remember the PIN number;

They were firm.

They said, "suggest something else,"

and they said, "What about thumb?"

I thought that's a great idea.

We'll link that digital banking with biometric,

and now women use the digital financial transaction

And you know what they said?

They said, "Anybody can steal my PIN number

That reinforced the teaching which I have always learned from women:

അത് സ്ത്രീകളിൽ നിന്ന് ഞാൻ എപ്പോഴും പഠിച്ചിരുന്നത് ശരിയാണ് എന്ന് ഉറപ്പിച്ചു.

never provide poor solutions to poor people.

എന്തെന്നാൽ ഒരിക്കലും പാവങ്ങളുടെ പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾക്ക് മോശം പരിഹാരം ഉണ്ടാക്കാൻ പാടില്ല

They are smart.

A few months later,

another woman came to the bank --

Kerabai.

She mortgaged her gold and took the loan.

I asked Kerabai, "Why are you mortgaging your precious jewelry

ഞാൻ കേരാ ഭായിയോട് ചോദിച്ചു "നിങ്ങൾ എന്തിനാണ് നിങ്ങളുടെ വിലപിടിപ്പുള്ള ആഭരണങ്ങൾ പണയം വെച്ച്

and taking a loan?"

Kerabai said, "Don't you realize that it's a terrible drought?

കേരാഭായ് പറഞ്ഞു "താങ്കൾക്ക് അറിയില്ലേ ഇപ്പോൾ കഠിനമായ വരൾച്ച ആണെന്ന്?

There's no food or fodder for the animals.

മൃഗങ്ങൾക്ക്‌ തിന്നാൻ ആഹാരമോ കാലിത്തീറ്റയോ ഇല്ല

No water.

I'm mortgaging gold to buy food and fodder for my animals."

And then she asks me, "Can I mortgage gold and get water?"

അവർ അതുകഴിഞ്ഞിട്ട് എന്നോട് ചോദിച്ചു, "എനിക്ക് സ്വർണം പണയം വെച്ച് വെള്ളം വാങ്ങാൻ പറ്റുമോ? "

I had no answer.

Kerabai challenged me: "You're working in the village

കേരാഭായ് എന്നെ വെല്ലു വിളിച്ചു, "താങ്കൾ ഈ ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ സ്ത്രീകളും

with women and finance,

സാമ്പത്തിക കാര്യങ്ങളുമായി പ്രവർത്തിക്കുകയാണ്

but what if one day there's no water?

If you leave this village,

Kerabai had a valid question,

so in this drought,

we decided to start the cattle camp in the area.

Cattle camp was extended for 18 months.

Kerabai used to move around in the cattle camp

കേരാഭായ് ക്യാമ്പിന് ചുറ്റും നടന്ന്

and sing the songs of encouragement.

പ്രോത്സാഹനത്തിന്റെ പാട്ടുകൾ പാടി.

Kerabai became very popular.

കേരാഭായ് വളരെ പ്രശസ്തയായി.

It rained and cattle camp was ended,

മഴ പെയ്തപ്പോൾ കന്നുകാലി ക്യാമ്പ് അവസാനിച്ചു.

but after cattle camp ended,

പക്ഷേ ക്യാമ്പ്‌ അവസാനിച്ച ശേഷം കേരാഭായ്

Kerabai came to our radio --

we have community radio

ഒരു ലക്ഷത്തിൽ അധികം ശ്രോതാക്കൾ ഉള്ള

which has more than 100,000 listeners.

She said, "I want to have a regular show on the radio."

ഇന്ന് കേരാഭായ് സ്ഥിരമായി റേഡിയോ പ്രോഗ്രാം ചെയ്യുന്നു.

Kerabai is doing a regular radio program,

and not only that,

she's become a famous radio jockey

അവൾ ചോദിച്ചു, "ഞാൻ ശരിയായ സത്യം താങ്കളോട് പറയട്ടെ?

Kerabai has become a local celebrity.

One day I asked Kerabai,

ഞാൻ എന്റെ ആദ്യത്തെ കുഞ്ഞിനെ ഗർഭം ധരിച്ച കാലം.

"How did you end up singing?"

She said, "Shall I tell you the real fact?

എനിക്ക് എപ്പോഴും വിശപ്പായിരുന്നു.

When I was pregnant with my first child,

എനിക്ക് ആവശ്യത്തിനുള്ള ആഹാരം ലഭിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല.

I was always hungry.

I did not have enough food to eat.

അതുകൊണ്ട് എന്റെ വിശപ്പ് മറക്കാൻ വേണ്ടി ഞാൻ പാടാൻ തുടങ്ങി. "

I did not have enough money to buy food,

എത്രയോ ധീരയും മിടുക്കിയുമാണ് അവർ, അല്ലേ?

and so to forget my hunger, I started singing."

I always think that our women overcome so many obstacles --

cultural, social, financial --

സുനിത കാംബ്ലി,

and they find out their ways.

അവൾ ഒരു ബിസിനസ്‌ സ്കൂളിൽ ഒരു കോഴ്സ് ചെയ്ത്

I would like to share another story:

ഒരു മൃഗ ഡോക്ടർ ആയി.

Sunita Kamble.

She has taken a course in a business school,

അവൾ ഒരു ദളിത്‌ ആയിരുന്നു,

and she has become a veterinary doctor.

അവൾ ഒരു തൊട്ടു കൂടാത്ത ജാതിക്കാരിയായിരുന്നു,

പക്ഷേ അവൾ ആടുകളിൽ കൃത്രിമ ബീജ സങ്കലനം നടത്തുമായിരുന്നു.

She's Dalit;

she comes from an untouchable caste,

ഇത് വളരെയധികം പുരുഷാധിപത്യം ഉള്ള ഒരു മേഖല ആയിരുന്നു,

but she does artificial insemination in goats.

സുനിതയ്‌ക്ക് അത്‌ കൂടുതൽ ക്ലേശകരമായി

It is a very male-dominated profession

and it is all the more difficult for Sunita

because Sunita comes from an untouchable caste.

But she worked very hard.

She did successful goat deliveries in the region

ഈയിടെ അവൾക്ക് ദേശീയ അവാർഡ് കിട്ടി.

അവളെ അനുമോദിക്കാനും ആശംസകൾ അർപ്പിക്കാനുമായി

and she became a famous goat doctor.

ഞാൻ സുനിതയുടെ വീട്ടിൽ പോയി.

Recently, she got a national award.

ഞാൻ ഗ്രാമത്തിലേക്ക് കടന്നപ്പോൾ തന്നെ

I went to Sunita's house to celebrate --

സുനിതയുടെ ഒരു വലിയ കട്ട്‌ ഔട്ട്‌ വെച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് കണ്ടു.

to congratulate her.

When I entered the village,

സുനിത ആ ചിത്രത്തിൽ ചിരിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.

I saw a big cutout of Sunita.

ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ നിന്ന് വന്ന ഒരു തൊട്ടു കൂടാത്തവൾക്ക്

Sunita was smiling on that picture.

ഗ്രാമത്തിന്റെ പ്രവേശനകവാടത്തിൽ

I was really surprised to see an untouchable,

ഒരു വലിയ കട്ട്‌ ഔട്ട്‌ കണ്ട് ഞാൻ അത്ഭുതപ്പെട്ടു.

അവളുടെ വീട്ടിൽ ചെന്നപ്പോൾ എനിക്ക്

coming from the village,

having a big cutout at the entrance of the village.

കൂടുതൽ അതിശയമായി

കാരണം ഉയർന്ന ജാതിയിൽ പെട്ട പുരുഷന്മാർ

When I went to her house,

I was even more amazed

അവിടെ ഇരിക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു, അവളുടെ വീട്ടിൽ,

because upper caste leaders --

ചായയും വെള്ളവും കുടിക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

men -- were sitting in the house, in her house,

അത് ഇന്ത്യയിൽ തീരെ പരിചിതമല്ല.

and having chai and water,

ഉയർന്ന ജാതി നേതാക്കൾ ഒരു തൊട്ടു കൂടാത്തവളുട വീട്ടിൽ പോകുകയോ

ചായയോ വെള്ളമോ കുടിക്കുകയോ ഇല്ല.

which is very rare in India.

Upper caste leaders do not go to an untouchable's house

വില്ലേജിലെ ആളുകളുടെ ഒരു യോഗത്തെ അഭിസംബോധന ചെയ്യാൻ

and have chai or water.

അവർ അവളോട്‌ അപേക്ഷിക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

And they were requesting her

സുനിത നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകൾ പഴക്കമുള്ള ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ജാതി വ്യവസ്ഥ വാർത്തെടുത്ത പെരുമാറ്റ രീതികളെ ആണ് തകർത്തത്.

to come and address the gathering of the village.

Sunita broke centuries-old caste conditioning in India.

ഞാൻ ഇനി ചെറുപ്പക്കാർ എന്താണ് ചെയ്യുന്നത് എന്നതിലേക്ക് വരട്ടെ.

And you know where she's going?

സരിത വളരെ പാവപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ആട്ടിടയ കുടുംബത്തിൽ നിന്നാണ് വരുന്നത്.

She's going to represent in 2020 Olympics, Tokyo.

ഞാൻ അവളെപ്പറ്റി അങ്ങേയറ്റം അഭിമാനിക്കുന്നു .

Sarita comes from a very poor shepherd community.

അവർ ലോകത്ത് എല്ലായിടത്തും കാണും,

I am just -- I couldn't be more proud of her.

There are millions of women like Sarita, Kerabai, Sunita,

ഒന്നും പങ്കുവെക്കാനില്ലെന്ന്.

who can be around you also.

They can be all over the world,

but at first glance you may think that they do not have anything to say,

and I'm just lucky to be with them.

we went to Reserve Bank of India

and we set up the first rural women's bank.

അവർ എന്നെ നിർബന്ധിക്കുന്നു.

Today they are pushing me to go to National Stock Exchange

ലോകത്തിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ ലഘു സമ്പാദ്യ

വനിതാ ബാങ്ക് ഉണ്ടാക്കാൻ അവർ എന്നെ പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. .

to set up the first fund dedicated to micro rural women entrepreneurs.

അവരിലൊരാൾ പറഞ്ഞു

"നിങ്ങളുടെ ധൈര്യം ആണ് നിങ്ങളുടെ മൂലധനം "

They are pushing me to set up

എന്നാൽ ഞാൻ ഇവിടെ പറയുന്നു

the first small finance women's bank in the world.

And as one of them said,

അവരുടെ ധൈര്യം ആണ് എന്റെ മൂലധനം എന്ന്.

"My courage is my capital."

നിങ്ങൾക്ക് ആവശ്യമുണ്ടെങ്കിൽ അത്

And I say here,

their courage is my capital.
