It’s a warm morning and I’m surrounded by six-year-old children in a classroom.

One by one, they cheerfully hug one of their friends

یەک لە دوای یەک، بە خۆشییەوە باوەشیان لە ھاوڕێکانیان دەگرت

who just came back home from a trip.

They comment on her new dress and her new hairstyle.

But the girl does nothing.

بەڵام کچەکە ھیچی نە گووت.

She looks towards the distant horizon, eyes fixed.

چاوانی جێگیر، سەیری ئاسۆییەکی دووری دەکرد.

The kids start wondering why she doesn't speak.

منداڵەکان حەپەسان بۆچی ئەو قسە ناکات.

The girl's name is Adayanci,

کچەکە ناوی (ئایجانیسی)ـیە،

and the trip she has just returned from is not a vacation.

ئەو گەشتەی لێی گەڕاوەتەوە لە پشوودا نییە.

She left Guatemala with her dad in May 2018 for the United States.

لەگەڵ باوکیدا (گواتمالا)ـیان بەجێھێشت، چوون بۆ ئەمریکا.

Several months later, she's back, but she has gone silent.

چەند مانگێک دواتر گەڕایەوە، بەڵام ئەو بێدەنگ بوو.

I'm filming this, feeling overwhelmed,

من ئەم فیلمە دەگرم، ھەست بە زاڵ بوون دەکەم،

and finding it difficult to look through the viewfinder of my camera.

زەحمەتە دۆزینەوەی بۆ سەیرکردن لە ڕێگای دیمەنی کامێراکەمەوە.

Her post-traumatic stress disorder is so visible.

دوای بریندار بوونی ناڕێکی فشاری زۆر بەر چاوە.

I am in tears.

I am a journalist who documents aftermaths for a living.

The impact, the invisible consequences.

What happens when the media spotlight is gone?

That's why I've spent hundreds of hours listening to and watching people

deeply affected by trauma.

Survivors of trafficking, child rape, gang slavery, forced labor

Different from the job of psychiatrist and aid workers,

I've dedicated my life to listening to them

to make their stories public,

in first person, in their own voice.

Despite all of the limitations of words and photographs and films,

سەرەڕای ھەموو سنوورەکانی ووشەکان و وێنەکان و فیلمەکان،

I believe better stories about the effects of trauma

بڕوام بە چیڕۆکی باشتر ھەییە دەربارەی کاریگەرییەکانی کارەساتی دڵتەزێن

in people's lives are essential.

They can show us the real consequences of seemingly abstract government policies.

They can trigger understanding across political divides

and awaken our universal sense of empathy.

Survivors like the now deceased Jennifer

taught me that brutal bondage does not happen far away.

David taught me the horrors refugees flee from

are scarier than any obstacle in the quest for safety.

Adayanci brought home for me that governments of developed nations

(ئاداینسی)، بۆم ھێنایە ماڵەوە، کە حکومەتەکانی گەلانی پێشکەوتوو

also harm using trauma as a weapon.

زیان بە بەکارھێنەرانی تڕاوما کەوت، وەک چەک.

The word "trauma" comes from ancient Greek.

ووشەی (تڕاوما)، لە یۆنانی کۆنەوە ھاتووە.

It's the word for "injury".

ئەم ووشەیە بۆ (بریندار) بوونە.

It's the psychological wound that stays

برینی دەروونییە کە دەمێنێتەوە

after something really terrible has happened to us.

It affects our body, our mind,

کاریگەری لەسەر جەستە و مێشکمان ھەیە

our memory and our sense of safety in the world.

War, violence, kidnapping, torture,

شەڕ، تووند و تیژی، ڕفاندن و ئەشکەنجەدان

they are all causes of trauma.

ئەوانە ھەمووی ھۆکارن بۆ (تڕاوما).

But it does not only happen far away, far from you.

بەڵام ئەوە تەنھا لە دووریی و دووری تۆدا ڕوونادات.

In the United States, for example,

بۆ نموونە، لە ئەمریکا

several large-scale community studies

چەندین لێکۆڵینەوەی کۆمەڵگای گەورە

have shown that exposure to violence and terror,

like rape, domestic abuse or trafficking

are common and damaging in times of peace.

What I witnessed in that classroom in Guatemala

was the aftermath of the zero-tolerance policy.

It separated children from parents at the US-Mexico border.

منداڵەکانی لە دایک و باوکی جیاکردیتەوە لە سنووی نێوان (ئەمریکا و مەکسیک).

Adayanci was sent to a shelter and two foster families

ئاداینسی ڕەوانەی پەناگەیەک کراو و دوو خێزان لە خۆیان گرت

while her dad was deported.

In her despair, she took a pair of scissors

لە نا ئومێدیدا، جووتێک مقەستی برد

and cut her own hair as a form of protest.

قژی خۆیی وەک جۆرێک لە ناڕەزایی بڕی.

A psychologist diagnosed her with acute stress,

دەروونناسێک بە سترێسی زۆر، دەستنیشانی کرد

warning it would become post-traumatic stress disorder

ئاگادار کردنەوە دەبێتە ناڕێکی فشار، دوای پێکان

the longer time passed.

ماوەیەکی درێژ تێپەڕی.

The damage of this type of separation

زیانەکانی ئەم جۆرە جیاکارییە

at an early age,

لە ساڵانی زوودا

just like other forms of abuse,

وەک شێوازەکانی تری خراپەکاری،

can be permanent if the child doesn't receive help.

دەتوانێ ھەمیشەیی بێت ئەگەر منداڵەکە یارمەتی وەر نەگرێت.

In order to justify this kind of violence,

بۆ ئەوەی پاساوی ئەم جۆرە تووند و تیژیانە بدرێتەوە،

there is a will to make certain people seem very different from us.

ویستێک ھەیە بۆ دروستکردنی کەسانێکی دیاریکراو، زۆر جیاواز لە ئێمە دیارن.

Evil, rapists, animals, criminals.

خراپەکار، دەستدرێژیکەر، ئاژەڵ و تاوانبارن.

Stripping off their humanity

لادانی مرۆڤەیەتییان

is a deliberate technique used by governments

with plenty of examples in history books.

In this case, the so-called evil, criminal and animal

was a shattered six-year-old girl.

We published Adayanci's documentary.

دۆکۆمێنتاری (ئاداینسی)مان، بڵاوکردەوە.

The story won a World Press Photo award

چیڕۆکەکە خەڵاتی (فۆتۆگڕافی پرێسی جیھانی)، بە دەستھێنا

thanks to which Adayanci is receiving therapy in Guatemala.

سوپاس، بۆ ئەوەی (ئایدانسی)، چارەسەر لە (گواتمالا)، وەردەگرێت.

She's on her slow way back to recovery, dancing and daydreaming.

لەسەر ڕێگایەکی ھێواش دەگەڕایەوە بۆ چاک بوونەوە، سەماکردن و خەونی ڕۆژی.

But most others have not gotten access to care.

بەڵام زۆربەی ئەوانی تر، بۆ چاودێریکردن دەستیان نەکەوتووە.

Hundreds haven't even been reunited with their families.

The trauma these policies cost can have generational effects.

سیاسەتەکان بە کارەساتێکی دڵتەزێن تێچوون، دەتوانێت کاریگەری نەوەیی ھەبێت.

Even in Adayanci's fortunate case,

تەنانەت لە حاڵەتی بەختەوەری (ئاداینسی)شدا،

the family has no institutional support and is in deep debt.

خێزانێک ھیچ پشتگیرییەکی دامەزراوەیی نییە و لە قەرزێکی قووڵدایە.

We humans heal from trauma through feeling safe,

لە ڕێگەی ھەستکردن بە سەلامەتی، ئێمەی مرۆڤ لە (تراوما)، دەناڵێنین

through storytelling

لەڕێگەی چیڕۆک گێڕانەوە

and through establishing connection with others in our communities.

لەڕێگەی دامەزراندنی پەیوەندیەوە لەگەڵ ئەوانی تر لە کۆمەڵگاکانماندا.

For this little girl reframing the story she will tell herself

بۆ ئەو کچە بچووکە چیڕۆکەکەی دووبارە کردەوە، بە خۆی گووت

it's part of her healing.

ئەوە بەشێکە لە ساڕێژ بوونەوەی.

For us as a society,

بۆ ئێمە وەک کۆمەڵگایەک،

reframing her story and pressuring our governments to do better

دووبارە دانەوەی چیڕۆکی و فشار خستنە سەر حکومەت، بۆ ئەوەی باشتر کار بکەن

is part of reclaiming our dignity as equals.

بەشێکە لە گێڕانەوەی شکۆی ئێمە، وەک یەکسانی.
