I’d like to dedicate this one to all the women in South Africa --

حەزدەکەم ئەم گۆرانییە پێشکەش بکەم بە هەموو ژنانی ئەفریقای باشوور

بەو ژنانەی ڕەتیانکردۆتەوە سیاسەتی ڕەگەزپەرستی نەمێنێت.

those women who refused to dwindle in the midst of apartheid.

و، بەدڵنیاییەوە، پێشکەشی داپیرەشمی دەکەم،

And, of course, I’m dedicating it also to my grandmother,

کە پێم وایە بەڕاستی ڕۆڵێکی گرنگی هەبووە،

whom I think really played quite a lot of important roles,

بە تایبەتی بۆ من کە چالاکوان بووم، و لەلایەن پۆلیسەوە هەراسان کرام.

especially for me when I was an activist, and being harassed by the police.

بیرت دەکەوێتەوە کە لە 16ی حوزەیرانی 1976، خوێندکارانی ئەفریقای باشوور بایکۆتی

You will recall that in 1976, June 16, the students of South Africa boycotted

زمانی ئەفریقیان کرد وەک ناوەندی ستەمکار،

the language of Afrikaans as the medium of the oppressor,

وەک ئەوەی کە ئەوان بە ڕاستی پێیان گوتراوە

as they were sort of like really told

کە دەبێت هەمووشتێک بە زمانی ئەفریقی بخوێنن

that they must do everything in Afrikaans --

زیندەزانی، بیرکاری و ئەی زمانی ئێمە چی؟

biology, mathematics -- and what about our languages?

و خوێندکارەکان ویستییان قسە لەگەڵ حکومەت بکەن،

And the students wanted to speak to the government,

و پۆلیسیش بە گولە وەڵامی دانەوە.

and police answered with bullets.

بۆیە هەموو ساڵێک 16ی حوزەیران یادی

So every year, June 16, we will commemorate

ئەو هەڤاڵانە یان ئەو خوێندکارانە دەکەینەوە کە مردن.

all those comrades or students who died.

و ئەو کاتە زۆر گەنج بووم. پێم وایە 11 ساڵ بووم،

And I was very young then. I think I was 11 years,

و دەستم کرد بە پرسیارکردن،

and I started asking questions,

و ئەوە کاتێک بوو کە خوێندنی سیاسیم دەستپێکرد.

and that’s when my political education started.

و دواتر، چوومە نێو ڕێکخراوی گەنجان

And I joined, later on, the youth organization

لە ژێر سەرپەرشتی کۆنگرەی نەتەوەیی ئەفریقیا.

under the African National Congress.

کەواتە وەک بەشێک لە ڕێکخستن و هەر شتێک،

So as part of organizing this and whatever,

ئەو یادە، پۆلیس ئێمە کۆ دەکاتەوە

this commemoration, the police will round us up

و پێمان دەڵێن پێشڕەوەکان.

as they call us leaders.

و ڕاهاتبووم ڕابکەم لە ماڵەوە،

And I used to run away from home,

کاتێک دەمزانی کە لەوانەیە پۆلیسەکان بێن

when I know that maybe the police might be coming

لە دەوروبەری 9 یان 10ـی حوزەیران.

around the ninth or 10th of June or so.

و داپیرەم جارێکیان گوتی،

And my grandmother one time said,

“نا، سەیرکە، ڕامەکە.

"No, look, you’re not going to run away.

ئێرە شوێنی تۆیە، لێرە بمێنەوە.”

This is your place, you stay here."

و لە ڕاستیدا پۆلیس هات، چونکە دەستگیرمان دەکەن

And indeed, the police came -- because they’ll just arrest us

و دەمانخەنە زیندانەوە، و کاتێک ئازادمان دەکەن کە دەگاتە 20ـی مانگ و ئەو کاتانە.

and put us in jail and release us whenever they feel like, after the 20th or so.

لە ڕۆژی 10ـی حوزەیراندا بوو، و هاتن و ماڵەکەیان گەمارۆدا،

So it was on the 10th of June, and they came, and they surrounded the house,

و داپیرەم هەموو ڕووناکییەکانی ماڵەکەی کوژاندەوە،

and my grandmother switched off all the lights in the house,

و دەرگای چێشتخانەکەی کردەوە.

and opened the kitchen door.

و پێی گوتن: “ڤوسی لێرەیە، و ئەمشەو نایبەن.

And she said to them, "Vusi's here, and you're not going to take him tonight.

بێزاربووم لەوەندە هاتنتان، و بێزارکردنمان،

I'm tired of you having to come here, harassing us,

لەکاتێکدا منداڵەکانی خۆتان بەئارامی خەوتوون لە ماڵەوە.

while your children are sleeping peacefully in your homes.

He is here, and you're not going to take him.

ئەو لێرەیە، و نایبەن.

من کاسەیەکی پڕ لە ئاوی کوڵاوم هەیە، یەکەم کەس بێت بۆ ئێرە، پێی دادەکەم”

I've got a bowl full of boiling water -- the first one who comes in here, gets it."

و ئەوان ڕۆیشتن.

And they left.
