I’d like to dedicate this one to all the women in South Africa --

この歌を アパルトヘイトに屈する事のなかった

those women who refused to dwindle in the midst of apartheid.

南アフリカの全ての女性達に捧げたいと思います

And, of course, I’m dedicating it also to my grandmother,

そして特に この歌を私の祖母に捧げたいと思います

whom I think really played quite a lot of important roles,

活動家の私が警察に嫌がらせを受けていた時に

especially for me when I was an activist, and being harassed by the police.

非常に重要な役割を果たしてくれたからです

You will recall that in 1976, June 16, the students of South Africa boycotted

1976年6月16日に南アフリカの学生たちが アフリカーンス語を圧制者の言語であるとして

the language of Afrikaans as the medium of the oppressor,

ボイコットした事を皆さんご存じでしょう

as they were sort of like really told

彼らはなんでもアフリカーンス語で

that they must do everything in Afrikaans --

行わなければいけないと言われました

biology, mathematics -- and what about our languages?

生物も数学の授業も　なぜ私達の各々の言語ではいけないのか？

And the students wanted to speak to the government,

学生たちは政府と話し合いたいと思いましたが

and police answered with bullets.

警察は銃弾で答えました

So every year, June 16, we will commemorate

ですから私達は毎年6月16日に

all those comrades or students who died.

亡くなった学生や仲間たちを追悼しているのです

And I was very young then. I think I was 11 years,

その時私はまだ11歳ぐらいだったと思いますが

and I started asking questions,

いろいろな疑問がわいたのです

and that’s when my political education started.

それが私の 政治教育の始まりでした

And I joined, later on, the youth organization

そして私は後に アフリカ民族会議（ANC）の

under the African National Congress.

青年団に加わりました

So as part of organizing this and whatever,

ANCを組織したり 追悼式を準備したので

this commemoration, the police will round us up

警察は私達をリーダーとみなし

as they call us leaders.

一斉検挙しようとしました

And I used to run away from home,

私は6月の9日か10日位になると

when I know that maybe the police might be coming

警察が来るだろうと

around the ninth or 10th of June or so.

家から逃げたものです

And my grandmother one time said,

そして祖母はある日こう言いました

"No, look, you’re not going to run away.

「いや 逃げちゃいけない

This is your place, you stay here."

ここはあんたの場所なんだから ここにいなさい」

And indeed, the police came -- because they’ll just arrest us

そして警察が来ました　逮捕されれば刑務所に入れられ

and put us in jail and release us whenever they feel like, after the 20th or so.

20日過ぎにならないと解放してもらえません

So it was on the 10th of June, and they came, and they surrounded the house,

6月10日に警察に家を囲まれた時

and my grandmother switched off all the lights in the house,

祖母は家の明かりを全部消し

and opened the kitchen door.

キッチンのドアを開けました

And she said to them, "Vusi's here, and you're not going to take him tonight.

そしてこう言ったんです 「ヴズィはここにいるけど 今夜は彼を連れていかせない

I'm tired of you having to come here, harassing us,

あんた達の子ども達は家でぐっすり寝ているのに

while your children are sleeping peacefully in your homes.

あんた達が家に来て 私達に嫌がらせをする事にうんざりしているんだ

He is here, and you're not going to take him.

彼はここにいるけど　連れて行けないよ

I've got a bowl full of boiling water -- the first one who comes in here, gets it."

ここに熱湯がたっぷり入ったボールがある―一番始めに家に入るのが かぶるんだよ」

And they left.
