I’d like to dedicate this one to all the women in South Africa --

those women who refused to dwindle in the midst of apartheid.

And, of course, I’m dedicating it also to my grandmother,

whom I think really played quite a lot of important roles,

especially for me when I was an activist, and being harassed by the police.

You will recall that in 1976, June 16, the students of South Africa boycotted

the language of Afrikaans as the medium of the oppressor,

아프리칸스어를 보이콧했죠. 일종의 탄압이었으니까요.

as they were sort of like really told

아시다시피 그들은 모든 것을

that they must do everything in Afrikaans --

아프리칸스어로 하도록 강요받았죠.

biology, mathematics -- and what about our languages?

생물학, 수학 - 우리 언어는 어쩌구요?

And the students wanted to speak to the government,

학생들은 정부와 얘기하고 싶었지만

and police answered with bullets.

경찰들은 총알로 답했습니다.

So every year, June 16, we will commemorate

그래서 매년 6월 16일 우리는 그 때 죽었던

all those comrades or students who died.

동지들과 학생들을 기념합니다.

And I was very young then. I think I was 11 years,

저는 그 때 아주 어렸어요. 11살이었던 것 같아요.

and I started asking questions,

그리고 의문을 품기 시작했죠.

and that’s when my political education started.

그 때부터 저는 정치를 공부하기 시작했습니다

And I joined, later on, the youth organization

그리고 나중에 아프리카민족회의에 속해 있는

under the African National Congress.

청소년 단체에 가입했습니다.

So as part of organizing this and whatever,

이런 기념이나 뭐 다른 거를 조직할 때면

this commemoration, the police will round us up

경찰들이 우리를 빙 둘러쌌죠.

as they call us leaders.

그리고는 우리를, 무슨 지도자 비슷한 걸로 불렀어요.

And I used to run away from home,

전 집에서 도망치곤 했어요.

when I know that maybe the police might be coming

6월 9일이나 10일쯤 해서

around the ninth or 10th of June or so.

경찰들이 올 지도 모른다는 걸 알고 있었거든요.

And my grandmother one time said,

어느 날 할머니께서 말씀하셨어요.

"No, look, you’re not going to run away.

"아니, 내 말 들어봐라. 도망치지 마.

This is your place, you stay here."

여기는 네 집니까 이 곳에 있어."

And indeed, the police came -- because they’ll just arrest us

당연히 경찰들은 찾아 왔습니다. 우리를 잡아

and put us in jail and release us whenever they feel like, after the 20th or so.

감옥에 넣은 후 20일 후쯤 그들이 내킬 때 꺼내 줄 생각이었죠.

So it was on the 10th of June, and they came, and they surrounded the house,

6월 10일이 되고, 경찰들이 와 집을 둘러 쌌어요.

and my grandmother switched off all the lights in the house,

할머니는 집 안의 모든 불을 끄신 후

and opened the kitchen door.

부엌문을 여셨습니다.

And she said to them, "Vusi's here, and you're not going to take him tonight.

그리고 이렇게 말씀하셨죠. "부시는 여기 있어. 하지만 그 애를 데려 가지는 못할 거야.

I'm tired of you having to come here, harassing us,

당신네 애들은 편히 자는 동안

while your children are sleeping peacefully in your homes.

우리를 찾아와 괴롭히는 데 아주 넌더리가 났다고.

He is here, and you're not going to take him.

그 애가 여기 있지만 절대 데려가지 못할 거야.

I've got a bowl full of boiling water -- the first one who comes in here, gets it."

끓는 물 한 바가지 가득 채워 놨으니까, 제일 먼저 들어 오는 사람, 각오해."

And they left.

경찰들은 떠났습니다.
