Without photographic evidence,

there's nothing that proves you caught a whopper,

In fact, hundreds of years ago,

Japanese fishermen invented their own way

Gyotaku is the ancient art of printing fish

that originated in Japan

as a way to record trophy catches

prior to the modern day camera.

Gyo means fish

and taku means impression.

There are several different stories about

how Gyotaku came about,

but it basically started with fishermen

needing a way to record the species and size

Fishermen took paper, ink, and brushes

out to sea with them.

They told stories of great adventures at sea.

Since the Japanese revered certain fish,

لە ماوەیەدا یابانیەکان زۆربایەخیان بە ماسی دەدا،

the fishermen would take a rubbing from these fish

ماسیگرەکان پارچە کاغەزێکیان لەسەر ماسیەکان دادەنا

and release them.

و بڵاویان دەکردەوە.

To make the rubbing,

بۆ لەبەرگرتنەوەی ،

they would paint the fish with non-toxic sumi-e ink

ئەوان ماسیەکەیان بۆیە دەکرد بەبێ مەرەکەبی ژەهراوی سام

and print them on rice paper.

و لەسەر کاغەزی برنج دروستیان دەکرد.

This way they could be released

ئەو ڕێگەیەی ئەوان دەیانکرد

or cleaned and sold at market.

یان پاکیان دەکردەوە و لە بازاڕ دەیان فرۆشت.

The first prints like this were for records only

یەکەم دروست کردن ئەوە تەنها بۆ تۆمار کردن بوو

with no extra details.

بەبێ وردەکاری زیادە.

It wasn't until the mid 1800's

تاوەکو ناوەڕاستی ساڵی ١٨٠٠

that they began painting eye details

کە ئەوان وردەکارنی چاویشیان دەکێشا

and other embellishments onto the prints.

One famous nobleman, Lord Sakai, was an avid fisherman,

یەکێک لە پیاوە بەناوبانگە خانەدانەکان ، لۆرد ساکی، ماسیگرێکی لێهاتوو بوو،

and, when he made a large catch,

و،کاتێک ماسیەکی گەورەی دەگرت،

he wanted to preserve the memory

of the large, red sea bream.

To do so, he commissioned a fisherman to print his catch.

After this, many fisherman would bring

پاش ئەوە ، زۆربەی ماسیگرەکان هاتن

their Gyotaku prints to Lord Sakai,

and if he liked their work,

he would hire them to print for him.

Many prints hung in the palace during the Edo period.

زۆربەی وێنەکان لە ناو کۆشک لەسەردەمی ئێدۆ هەڵواسترا.

After this period, Gyotaku was not as popular

پاش ئەو سەردەمە، گیۆتاکو خۆشەویستی نەما

and began to fade away.

و دیارنەما.

Today, Gyotaku has become a popular art form,

ئەمڕۆ، گیۆتاکو بۆتە هونەرێکی خۆشەویست،

enjoyed by many.

بە دڵی زۆر کەسە.

And the prints are said to bring good luck to the fishermen.

و وێنەکان بەختێکی باشیان بۆ ماسی گرەکان دەهێنا.

But the art form is quite different than it used to be.

بەڵام هونەری پێکهێنانی تەواو جیاواز بوو لە بەکارهێنانی.

Most artists today learn on their own by trial and error.

ئەمڕۆ زۆربەی وێنەکێشان فێر دەبن بەهۆی تاقیکردنەوە و هەڵەکانیان.

Before the artist begins to print,

پێش ئەوەی وێنەکێشەکە دەست بکات بە وێنەکێشان،

the fish needs to be prepared for printing.

ماسیەکە پێویستە ئامادە بکرێت بۆ وێنەکێشان.

First, the artist places the fish

یەکەم جار، وێنەکێشەکە ماسیەکەی لە شوێنێک دادەنا

on a hollowed out surface.

ناویان دەردەهێنا.

Then the artist spreads the fins out

دواتر وێنەکێشەکە پەڕەکانی پەرش و بڵاو دەکاتەوە

and pins them down on the board to dry.

و دەرزی قایم کردنی لێدەدا لەسەر تەختەیەک تا وشکبێتەوە.

They then clean the fish with water.

دواترئەوان ماسیەکەیان خاوێندەکردەوە بەئاو.

When it comes time to print,

کاتێک کاتی وێنەکێشان دەهات،

there are two different methods.

دوو شێوازی جیاواز هەبوو.

The indirect method begins with pasting moist fabric or paper

شێوازێکی ناڕاستەوخۆ دەستی پێکردنی چندراوێکی تەڕ یان کاغەزێک

onto the fish using rice paste.

لەسەر ماسیەکە بەکارهێنانی لکێندراوێکی برنج.

Then, the artist uses a tompo,

دواتر، وێنەکێشەکە تۆمپیەک بەکار دەهێنێت،

or a cotton ball covered in silk,

یان لۆکەیەک خڕی ئاورشمی،

to put ink on the fabric or paper to produce the print.

دانانی مەرەکەب لەسەر چندراوەکە یان پەڕەکە بۆ دروست بوونی وێنەکە.

This method requires more skill

ئەو شێوازە پێویستی بە لێزانینی زیاترهەیە

and great care needs to be taken

و پێویستی بە وریای زیاترە

when pulling the paper off the fish

کاتێک کاغەزەکە لەسەر ماسیەکە لادەبەیت

so the paper doesn't tear.

کاغەزەکە نادڕێت.

In the direct method,

لە شێوازێکی ڕاستەوخۆ،

the artist paints directly on the fish,

وێنەکێشەکە ڕاستەوخۆ ماسیەکە دەکێشێت،

and then gently presses the moist fabric or paper into the fish.

و دواتر بە نەرمی کاغەزە تەڕەکە لەسەر ماسیەکە دەپەستێوێت.

With both of these methods,

لەگەڵ ئەو دوو ڕێگایە ،

no two prints are exactly alike,

هەر دوو شێوازی دروستکردنەکە وەک یەک نییە،

but both reveal dramatic images of the fish.

بەڵام هەر دووکیان وێنەی شانۆگەری ماسیکە نیشان دەدات.

For the final touch,

لە کۆتایی دەستکەوتن،

the artist uses a chop, or a stamp,

وێنەکێشەکە پارچەیەک بەکاردەهێنێت یان پولێک ،

and signs their work,

و کارەکەیان مۆر دەکات،

and can hold it up to say,

و دەتواندرێت بمێنێتەوە،

"The fish was exactly this big!"
