Every day we are bombarded on all platforms of media

Authentic narrative is the glue that connects people,

ڕوداوە ڕاستەقینەکان کاریگەریان لەسەر خەڵک ھەیە

providing a compelling reason to keep reading.

It makes the personal universal,

transcends the individual,

and makes a story timeless and humanistic.

How, as a journalist, do you ask the questions

that yield this type of narrative?

You have to know what to ask of whom.

دەبێت بزانیت کە چ پرسیارێکیان لێ دەکەیت.

First you need to understand that every piece of journalism

پێش ھەموو شتێک دەبێت زۆر بە وردی لە ڕۆژنامەگەری تێ بگەی

requires a trifecta of sourcing.

داوای ترافێکتای سەرچاوەکانی بکەیت.

If you picture the reporting process as depicted by a triangle,

ئەگەر وێنای پڕۆسەیەکی ڕاگەیاندن بکەی کە لەسەر شێوەی سێگۆشەیەک کێشرا بێت

one side will be official sources,

لایەکیان دەبێتە سەرچاوە سەرەکیەکان،

another side will be overview sources,

لایەکیتر دەبێتە تێڕوانینی گشتی سەرچاوەکان

and a third side will be unofficial sources.

لای سێیەم دەبێتە سەرچاوە نافەرمییەکان،

All three components are necessary in every well-reported piece.

ھەر سێ بەشەکە گرنگن بۆ نووسینێکی پتەو.

The first side has official sources.

یەکەم لا، سەرچاوە فەرمی ھەیە.

Those are the people with titles and expertise,

ئەوانە خەڵکی شارەزا و لێھاتوون،

ئەوانەن کە خاوەن کۆمپانیان، لە جووڵانەوەکاندا قسە بۆ خەڵکی دەکەن.

who own the company; are spokespeople for the movement.

They tell you the numbers, and the answers

ژمارەکان و وەڵامەکانت بۆ ئاشکرا دەکەن

to how much, how many, where, when, and who.

کە چەندە، لە کوێ ، کەی و، کێ.

A second side of the triangle includes overview sources:

لای دووەم لە سێگۆشەکە کە تێڕوانینی گشتی :لە خۆ دەگرێت

academics, consultants, authors,

وەک ئەکادیمی، پسپۆڕان، و نوسەران،

ئەم کەسایەتیانە ڕاستەوخۆ پەیوەندیان پێیانەوە نییە

who are not directly connected as stakeholders,

but have knowledge of the big picture.

بەڵام زانیاریان لەسەر ئەم دیاردانە ھەیە

Yet it is the third side of the trifecta - unofficial sources -

و ئەوە لای سێیەمە لە تریفێکتا - سەرچاوە -نافەرمیەکان

who hold the power of the individual's insight.

کە ھێزی ھۆشداری تاکی لە خۆ گرتووە.

This is where you can find the why,

ئێرە ئەو شوێنەیە کە دەتوانی تێبگەیت هۆکار پشت ڕووداوەکان چییە،

Giving consequence on the event, trend, phase, or idea

پێدانی دەرەنجامی ڕووداو، خواست، بارودۆخ، یان بیرۆکە

and what it means on a soul level to someone affected by it.

و پێمان دەڵێن ئەم ڕووداوانە کاریگەریان لەسەر کەسەکان چییە.

So how do you mine for the gems,

چۆن گەوھەر دەدۆزیەوە لە زەوی ھەلکەندراو،

identifying what is compelling from what is chatter?

جیاکردنەوەیان کامە گەوھەری ڕاستەقینەیە و کامە خاشاکە؟

You ask surprising questions.

پرسیاری سەیر دەکەیت.

To achieve the complicated, fragile human connection,

بۆ پەیوەندیەکی ئاڵۆزی، شکست خواردوو،

you regard the stories of every subject as sacred.

چیرۆکی هەموو ڕووداوێک بە پیرۆز ئەژمار دەکەیت.

Realize that an anecdote is oxygen

دەردەکەویت کە چیرۆک ئۆکسجینە

that breathes life into a grey story of exposition,

کە ھەناسە بە ژیان دەدات

facts and data.

ڕاستیەکان وڕاستەقینەییەکان.

What the surgeon did at home the morning he operated on a woman's brain tumor.

نەشتەرگەرەکە ئەو ڕؤژە لە ماڵەوە چی کرد کاتێک نەشتەرگەری لەسەر مێشکی ژنەکە کرد.

How it feels to dream and train for the Olympics for a lifetime.

دەبێت چ جۆرە هەستێک بێت لە هەموو ژیانت بۆ یاریە ئۆڵۆمپیەکان ڕاهێنان بکەیت.

There are times when it is important to convey information quickly,

و کات گرنگە بۆ خێرا گواستنەوەی زانیاریەکان،

to present bulleted facts and updates.

بۆ دەرکەوتنی ڕاستیەکان و تازەگەریەکان

When a situation is urgent, when action is required now,

کاتێک بارودۆخێکی لە ناکاو، یا کارێکت لێداوا دەکرێت

when you need to know where the tornado will hit,

کاتێک پێویستە بزانی گەردەلولەکە ڕوو لە کوێ دەکات،

how fast the fire is spreading, and if it will reach your home today.

But the narrative personal stories

that contribute to the buffet of journalism

پێشنیارەکانی ڕۆژنامەوانی

are pieces that have the luxury of a slow dance of information.

چەند پارچەیەکن لە سەمایەکی نایابی پڕ زانیاری.

It is this artful solicitation of story

ئەوە ئەو داواکاریە ھونەریەیە لە چیرۆک

that will make the journalism memorable

کە وا لە ڕۆژنامەوان دەکات لە بیرنەکرێت

and will deliver the narrative bond that will connect us to each other.

و ئەو چیرۆکە وامان لێ دەکات کە بەیەکەوە پەیوەست بین.
