How did I get here?

Well, it's a stranger story than you might think.

I came from a world of drifters,

나는 떠돌이들이 사는 세상에서 왔어

a place few humans have ever seen.

극소수의 사람들만 본 적이 있는 곳.

The world of plankton.

플랑크톤이 사는 세상.

I came from a batch of a million eggs, and only a few of us survived.

나는 수백만개의 알들 속에서 태어났지.

몇몇만 살아남았어.

When I became a larva, I moved among other drifters.

내가 애벌레가 되었을 때

나는 다른 떠돌이들 사이를 헤집고 다녔지

["Plankton" comes from the Greek "planktos" for wandering]

My fellow plankton came in all sizes, from tiny algae and bacteria

to animals longer than a blue whale.

I shared my nursery with other embryos and juveniles,

We drifting animals are called zooplankton.

우리처럼 떠도는 동물들은 동물성 플랑크톤이라고 불러

The most common animals here are copepods and krill.

여기서 가장 흔한 동물은

요각류(작은 갑각류 일종)와 크릴 새우들이야.

(Buzzing)

네가 온 세상을 뒤져볼 수는 있겠지,

You could search the world over,

but you'd never find a place more diverse than my childhood home.

그래도 내 어린 시절 보금자리보다 더 다채로웠던 곳은 찾을 수 없을걸!

A teaspoon of seawater

한 찻숟가락에 담긴 바닷물에는

can contain more than a million living creatures.

살아있는 생물들이 백만도 넘어

It can be a pretty tough existence, though.

하지만 살아남기는 힘들지.

Trillions are born here, but only a few make it to adulthood.

수조가 넘는 생명들이 여기서 태어나지

그러나 몇몇만 성체로 자라나지.

그는 아마 핀의 머리보다 작을걸

He may be no larger than a pin head,

but this crab larva is an arrow worm's worst nightmare.

Epic battles between carnivores like these are just one way to get food.

But the real powers of this place come from phytoplankton.

하지만 이 곳의 진짜 힘은 식물성 플랑크톤에서 나오지

Single-celled life

that transforms sunlight and carbon dioxide

into edible gold.

Phytoplankton are the base for the largest food web in the world.

세상에서 가장 큰 먹이 그물을 받치고 있는게 식물성 플랑크톤이지.

During the night,

밤에

many animals like me would rise up from the depths

나와 같은 많은 동물들이 저 깊은 곳에서 일어나

to feed on this sun-powered feast.

햇볕으로 만들어낸 이 잔치 음식을 먹지.

(플랑크톤의 움직임을 나타내는 소리)

(Maraca sound)

I was part of the largest daily migration of life on Earth.

내가 바로 지구상에서 가장 크게 일어나는 생명체들의 주야 이동의 일원이야.

During the day,

낮에는

I'd return to the darkness, where I'd join my bizarre companions.

어둠으로 돌아가 괴기하게 생긴 동료들과 함께 하지.

(플랑크톤의 움직임을 나타내는 소리)

(High pitch buzz)

(Flapping noises)

Cannibals, like this sea butterfly mollusk,

이 익족류(翼足類) 연체동물과 같이

that eats its next of kin.

가장 가까운 친척들을 먹는 육식성 동물들과

And comb jellies,

마치 무지갯빛 속눈썹 같은 섬모들로 헤엄치는

that beat cilia like rainbowed eyelashes.

빗해파리들

Some of these snare their prey with sticky tentacles,

이들 중 몇몇은 끈적이는 촉수로 덫을 놓아 먹이를 잡지

while others just take a bite out of their cousins.

반면 다른 애들은 그냥 사촌들을 물어버려

And siphonophores

그리고 독이 든 미끼를 이용해 먹이를 잡는

that catch prey with toxic fishing lures.

But my favorite would have to be the crustacean Phronima.

그러나 내가 가장 좋아하는 애는 갑각류 입주영리옆새우(Phronima)야

Its monstrous looks inspired the movie "Aliens."

괴물같은 생김새는 영화 '에일리언'을 만들게 했지.

It can catch tiny bits in its bristles,

그들은 강모(짧고 뻗뻗한 털)를 이용해 아주 작은 것들을 잡을 수 있어

but prefers larger prey like salps.

하지만 살프(Salp,식물성 플랑크톤의 일종) 와 같이 더 큰 먹이를 좋아하지

With two sets of eyes, this female prowls the deeper water.

두 쌍의 눈을 가진 이 암놈은 먹이를 찾아 깊은 물 속을 돌아다녀.

Prey in hand,

먹이가 손에 들어오면

she performs one of the strangest behaviors

동물 왕국 전체에서 가장 이상한 짓을 해.

in the entire animal kingdom.

With body parts from her victims,

먹이의 일부를 가지고

she delicately assembles a barrel-like home

통처럼 생긴 집을 섬세하게 만들어내지

feeding her young until they can drift off and survive on their own.

자기 새끼들이 떠돌면서 스스로 살아갈 수 있을 때까지 키울 수 있는 공간이 되는거야

Best of all, they make the perfect snack for a small fish like me.

특히 나처럼 작은 물고기한테는 그것들이 최고의 간식이야.

Here among the plankton,

여기 플랑크톤들 속에서

the food web is so tangled and complex,

먹이 그물은 아주 복잡하고 또 서로 얽혀있어서

even scientists don't know who eats whom.

과학자들조차 누가 누구를 먹는지 몰라

But I do.

그러나 나는 알아

At least now you know a bit of my story.
