This is a song sung by a brown thrasher.

यह ब्राउन थ्रेशर द्वारा गाया गया एक गाना था |

But that’s just one of the thousand or more that it knows,

पर यह सिर्फ उन हज़ारो,

या जितने भी ज्यादा यह जानता है उनमे से एक था.

and it’s not the only avian virtuoso.

केवल यही एक पक्षीय दक्ष संगीतज्ञ नही है थ्रश नामका पक्षी.

A wood thrush can sing two pitches at once.

उनमे से एक था|

एकसाथ दो स्वरमानो मे गा सकती है|

A mockingbird can match the sounds around it, including car alarms.

एक मॉकिंगबर्ड अपने आसपास की आवाज़ों की बराबरी कर सकती है -

जिसमे कार अलार्म भी शामिल है|

And the Australian superb lyrebird

और ऑस्ट्रेलियाई दिखाऊ लायरबर्ड के पास,

has an incredible, elaborate song and dance ritual.

एक अद्वितीय , सजीले नाच और गाने की परंपरा होती है|

These are just a few of the 4,000 species of songbirds.

यह सांगबर्ड्स की ४००० प्रजातियों मे से कुछेक ही है.

Most birds produce short, simple calls,

कई चिड़ियाएं छोटे , सरल आवाज़े निकालती हैं.

but songbirds also have a repertoire of complex vocal patterns

पर सांगबर्ड्स के पास

एक जटिल स्वररूप का खज़ाना भी होता है,

that help them attract mates,

जो उन्हे मदद करता है साथी ढूंढने मे,

defend territory,

अपना इलाका बचाने मे,

and strengthen their social bonds.

और अपने सामाजिक बंधनो को मजबूत करने मे|

Each songbird species has its own distinct song patterns,

हर सांगबर्ड प्रजाति की आवाज़ों का अपना विशिष्ट स्वरूप होता है,

some with characteristic regional dialects.

जिसमे क्षेत्रीय बोलियां भी शामिल हैं|

Experienced listeners can even distinguish individual birds by their unique songs.

अनुभवी श्रोता हर चिड़िया को उसके अपने व्यक्तिगत आवाज़.

और गाने से पहचान सकता है|

So how do birds learn these songs in the first place?

तो पहली बात यह है कि,

चिड़ियाएं यह गाने गाना सीखती कैसे हैं ?

How do they know to mimic the songs of their own species?

वे अपनी स्वयं की प्रजाति की ही आवाज़ों की नकल करना कैसे जानती हैं ?

Are they born knowing how to sing?

क्या उन्हें जन्मजात ही गाने का ज्ञान होता है ?

पक्षियों के गाने के विषय मे ज्यादातर जो बाते वैज्ञानिक जानते हैं|

A lot of what scientists know about bird song comes from studying zebra finches.

वे अफ़्रीकी ज़ेबरा फिंच चिड़ियाओं का अवलोकन कर प्राप्त हुई हैं|

A baby male zebra finch typically learns to sing from its father or other males,

एक शिशु ज़ेबरा फिंच चिड़िया, गाना प्रारुपिकतया अपने पिता से

या दूसरे वयस्क नरो को देखकर सीखता है|

starting while it’s still a fledgling in the nest.

अपने घोसले मे अनुभवहीन बैठे होते हुए के समय से ही वो यह सब सीखने लगता है|

First comes a sensory learning phase,

पहले एक संवेदिक सीखने का काल होता है|

when the baby finch hears the songs sung around it and commits them to memory.

जब शिशु फिंच अपने आसपास गाये जाने वाले

गानों को सुनता है और याद कर लेता है|

The bird starts to vocalize during the motor learning phase,

फिर सञ्चालन द्वारा सीखने के काल मे वह,

इन गानों को गाने का अभ्यास करने लगता है,

practicing until it can match the song it memorized.

और तब तक अभ्यास करता है जब तक वह गाना

उसके याद किये हुए गाने के समान नही हो जाता|

As the bird learns, hearing the tutor’s song over and over again

इस तरह पक्षी सीखते हैं,

अध्यापक को बार-बार सुनकर और अभ्यास कर

is helpful— up to a point.

यह उपयोगी होता है - एक बिंदु तक.

If he hears it too many times, the imitation degrades—

और अगर वह, इसे बार बार सुनता है तो अनुकरण निम्नीकृत हो सकता है,

स्त्रोत भी मायने रखता है|

and the source matters.

If the song is played through a loudspeaker,

अगर गाना किसी ध्वनि- विस्तारक यन्त्र द्वारा बजाया जाये, तो

he can’t pick it up as easily.

वह इसे जल्दी नही पकड़ पायेगा|

But hide the same loudspeaker inside a toy painted to look like a zebra finch,

पर अगर आप उसी के समान एक ध्वनि - विस्तारक

किसी ज़ेबरा फिंच के समान दिखने वाले खिलौने के अंदर

and his learning improves.

लगा दें, तब उस शिशु की सीखने की क्षमता

बढ़ जायेगी|

What if the baby never hears another zebra finch’s song?

पर क्या हो अगर शिशु फिंच ने किसी दूसरे ज़ेबरा फिंच की आवाज़

कभी सुनी ही ना हो ?

Interestingly enough, it’ll sing anyway.

आश्चर्यजनक रूप से, यह तब भी गाना सीख जायेगा|

Isolated finches still produce what are called innate or isolate songs.

विलग हुए फिंच भी गाना गाते हैं जिन्हे एन्नेट या आइसोलेट गाने कहते हैं|

A specific tune might be taught,

कोई निश्चित धुन भी सिखाई जा सकती हैं,

but the instinct to sing seems to be hardwired into a songbird’s brain.

यह गाने कि सहज प्रवृति

सांगबर्ड्स के मस्तिष्क मे यंत्रस्थ होती है|

Innate songs sound different from the “cultured” songs

एन्नेट गाने, सभ्य गानों से अलग ध्वनित होते हैं

learned from other finches—at first.

पहली बार सीखी गयी -- दूसरी फिंच चिड़ियाओं से|

अगर विलग हुई ज़ेबरा फिंचे कोई नई कॉलोनी शुरू करती हैं

If isolated zebra finches start a new colony,

the young birds pick up the isolate song from their parents.

तो वहां के शिशु फिंच उस आइसोलेट गाने को सीख जाते हैं |

अपने माता पिता से

But the song changes from generation to generation.

पर वह गाना पीढ़ी दर पीढ़ी बदल रहा होता है |

And after a few iterations,

और कुछ पुनरावृत्तियों के बाद,

the melody actually starts to resemble

धुन असल मे अपने मूल रूप के सदृश होने लगती है

the cultured songs sung by zebra finches in the wild.

जंगली ज़ेबरा फिन्चो द्वारा गाये गए सभ्य गानों के

Something about the learning process must be hardwired, too,

यह सीखने की क्रिया कुछ ख़ास है|

और पक्षियों के मस्तिष्क में यंत्रस्थ है

drawing the birds towards the same song patterns again and again.

और बार बार उन्ही मूल प्रतिरूपो की और ले जाती है

This means that basic information about the zebra finch song

इसका अर्थ है कि ज़ेबरा फिन्चो के गाने की मूल जानकारी

must be stored somewhere in its genome,

इनके जीनोम मे ही कहीं पर संगृहीत होगी जो

imprinted there by millions of years of evolution.

करोड़ो वर्षो के विकास के पश्चात अंकित हुई|

At first, this might seem odd,

पहली बार मे यह असंभव लगता है

as we usually think of genetic code as a source of biochemical or physical traits,

और बहुधा,हम जेनेटिक कोड्स को जैव रासायनिक

या किसी शारीरक रूप से उपयोगी रूप मे ही देखते हैं

not something like a behavior or action.

ना कि व्यवहार या कार्यो जैसी सरल लगने वाली वस्तुओ मे|

But the two aren’t fundamentally different;

पर दोनों आधारभूत रूप से अलग नही होते|

we can connect genomes to behavior through brain circuitry.

हम दोनों को जीनोम के द्वारा मष्तिष्क की कार्यप्रणाली से जोड़ सकते हैं|

The connection is noisy and quite complex.

पर यह जोड़ बहुत ही कोलाहलमय और जटिल है|

It doesn’t simply map single genes to single behaviors, but it exists.

यह साधारणतया, जीन्स को साधारण क्रिया से नही जोड़ता

पर इसका वहां पर अस्तित्व होता है|

जीनोम मे+ मष्तिष्क के विकास के लिए जरुरी जीन्स होते हैं|

Genomes contain codes for proteins that guide brain development,

such as molecules that guide the pathways of developing axons,

जैसे कि, वे मॉलिक्यूल्स जो तंत्रिकाओं के विकास के लिए मार्ग प्रशस्त करते हैं|

shaping distinct circuits.

पृथक परिपथो का गठन करते हुए

Birds’ brains have so-called “song circuits”

पक्षियों के मस्तिष्क मे जिन्हे "गीत परिपथ" कहा जा सकता है|

that are active when the birds sing.

वे तब सक्रिय होते हैं जब चिड़ियाएं गाती हैं|

These circuits also respond to the song of a bird’s own species

यही परिपथ तब भी प्रतिक्रिया करते हैं

जब उन चिड़ियाओं की अपनी जाति की चिड़ियाएं गाती हैं|

more strongly than to other species’ songs.

दूसरी प्रजातियों के गीतों से ज्यादा तेज़|

So the theory is that a bird’s genes guide development of brain circuits

तो यह सिद्धांत कि पक्षियों के मस्तिष्क का विकास, जीन्स का असर होता है|

that relate to singing and the ability to learn songs.

जिनका सम्बन्ध गाने तथा गाना सीखने की क्षमता से जुड़ा होता है

Then, exposure to songs shapes those neural circuits

और फिर गानो का अनावरण उन तंत्रिका परिपथों को आकार देता है|

to produce the songs that are typical to that species.

ऐसे गाने उत्पन्न करने के लिए जो उस प्रजाति के विशिष्टः हैं|

Genetically encoded or innate behaviors aren’t unique to songbirds.

इस तरह के अनुवांशिक व्यवहार पक्षियों में ही नहीं

They’re widespread in the animal kingdom.

अपितु पशु जगत मे भी विभिन्न प्रजातियों मे व्याप्त हैं|

Spectacular examples include

प्रभावशाली उदाहरणो मे आते हैं -

the long-distance migrations of monarch butterflies and salmon.

मोनार्क तितलियों का तथा सालमॅन मछलियों का लम्बी दुरी का प्रवास

So what does this mean for humans?

तो मनुष्यो के लिए इसका क्या अर्थ है ?

Are we also born with innate information written into our genomes

हम भी उसी सहज बोध के साथ पैदा हुए

जो हमारे जीनोम मे अंकित है

that helps shape our neural circuits,

जो हमारे तंत्रिका परिपथों को आकार देने में सहायक है,

and ultimately results in something we know?

और अंततः परिणामित होता है कुछ ऐसा जो हम जानते हैं ?

Could there be some knowledge

क्या ऐसा कोई ज्ञान है|

that is unique and intrinsic to humans as a species?

जो अद्वितीय है और अन्तस्थ है मनुष्यो के लिए एक प्रजाति के तौर पर ?
