So before we can start switching our sentences from active to passive,

it's very important for us to understand the different parts of a sentence.

Let's look at our board.

We have a sentence written,  ‘The boy opened the door.’

This is an example of an active sentence

which usually follows the pattern of subject verb object.

Our subject the ‘doer’ is ‘the boy’.

But what did the boy do? ‘The boy opened…’

‘open’ is the example of an action.

What did the boy open?

The boy opened the door.

‘the door’ is the receiver or the direct object.

'ประตู' คือผู้รับหรือวัตถุโดยตรง

So again, before we can really switch our sentences from active to the passive, 

อีกครั้ง ก่อนที่เราจะเปลี่ยนประโยคจาก active เป็น passive

it's very important for us to understand the different parts of a sentence.

And the more that we understand different parts of a sentence,

the easier it will be to switching active sentences to passive sentences.

So now let's switch our active sentence over to a passive one.

Here's our sentence from before: ‘The boy opened the door.’ 

นี่คือประโยคของเราก่อนหน้านี้: 'เด็กชายเปิดประตู'

Now, we have, ‘The door was opened by the boy.’

ตอนนี้ เรามี 'เด็กคนนั้นเปิดประตู'

Like I mentioned earlier, for active sentences,  they follow the subject verb object pattern.

Well it's a little bit different from the passive sentence.

Before we had the receiver at the end of the sentence,

now we have the receiver in the beginning of the sentence.

Our verb is the same. Or the action is the same.

กริยาของเราเหมือนกัน หรือการกระทำก็เหมือนกัน

But we have a ‘to be’ verb added on.

แต่เราได้เพิ่มกริยา 'to be'

‘was opened’ is our ‘to be’ verb plus the past participle of ‘open’.

'ถูกเปิด' คือกริยา 'to be' ของเราบวกกับกริยาที่ผ่านมาของ 'open'

Now, it could also be these ‘to be’ verbs as well.

ตอนนี้ก็อาจเป็นกริยา 'to be' เหล่านี้ได้เช่นกัน

But, we're going to use ‘was’.

แต่เราจะใช้ 'เคย'

And this will change depending on the tense that we're using in our sentence.

We also have ‘the door being opened by the boy’.

Now, the reason why we have it in brackets is because

sometimes we don't need to know who is the ‘doer’.

In this sense, the boy is the ‘doer’.

And this ‘by’ helps us understand that it is the boy who is opening the door.

Let's look at some more examples.

Okay, so now we have examples of active sentences  that we're going to change to passive sentences.  

เอาล่ะ ตอนนี้เรามีตัวอย่างประโยค Active ที่เราจะเปลี่ยนเป็นประโยค Passive

Let's look at our first one.

มาดูตัวแรกของเรากัน

‘The woman helped the man.’

'ผู้หญิงคนนั้นช่วยผู้ชาย'

We learned earlier that whenever we're changing active sentences to passive sentences, 

เราเรียนรู้มาก่อนหน้านี้ว่าเมื่อใดก็ตามที่เราเปลี่ยนประโยคที่ใช้งานเป็นประโยคแบบพาสซีฟ

we are going to need to switch our doer and our receiver. 

เราจะต้องเปลี่ยนผู้กระทำและผู้รับของเรา

In this one, the doer, who is the woman, is going to switch places with the receiver, who is the man, 

ในข้อนี้ผู้กระทำซึ่งเป็นหญิงจะสลับตำแหน่งกับผู้รับซึ่งเป็นชาย

because now the man is the focus of the sentence and will now come to the front - the man.

But what's our action?

Well in our sentence before, our action is ‘helped’.

We're going to now change this to the past participle which,  

ตอนนี้เราจะเปลี่ยนสิ่งนี้เป็นกริยาที่ผ่านมาซึ่ง

luckily for us the past participle, is ‘helped’.

โชคดีสำหรับเราที่กริยาที่ผ่านมา 'ช่วย'

Now, we're going to add our ‘to be’ verb which is ‘was’.

ตอนนี้เราจะเพิ่มกริยา 'to be' ซึ่งก็คือ 'was'

So the man was helped.

ดังนั้นชายคนนั้นจึงได้รับความช่วยเหลือ

By whom?

โดยใคร?

The woman.

ผู้หญิง.

Which is now at the end of the sentence.

ซึ่งตอนนี้อยู่ท้ายประโยค

‘The man was helped by the woman.’

Let's look at our next one.

‘The cat bit the girl.’

'แมวกัดผู้หญิง'

Just like we learned before, we're going to switch our doer and our receiver.

เหมือนกับที่เราเคยเรียนมาก่อนหน้านี้ เราจะเปลี่ยนผู้กระทำและผู้รับของเรา

So now the girl is in the front of the sentence.

‘The girl… bit…’ The past participle of bit?

This one's a little bit different.

‘bit’ is going to change to ‘bitten’

'bit' กำลังจะเปลี่ยนเป็น 'bitten'

When we add our ‘to be’ verb ‘was’,

เมื่อเราเติม 'to be' กริยา 'was',

‘The girl was bitten...'

'The girl was bitten...'

By what?

โดยอะไร?

The cat.

แมว.

‘The girl was bitten by the cat.’

'ผู้หญิงคนนั้นโดนแมวกัด'

‘The knife cut the bread.’

'มีดตัดขนมปัง'

‘The bread was cut by the knife.’

'ขนมปังถูกตัดด้วยมีด'

I think we're getting this.

‘The student answered the question.’

‘The question was answered by the student.’

In our last one,‘The teacher taught the class.’

‘The class was taught by the teacher.’

Wow. I think we're getting better.

Let's move on.

So earlier we changed some sentences from the active to the passive voice.

Well now, let's practice recognizing sentences in the active and passive voice.

Our first one, ‘The bat hit the ball.’

hmm,

well, I can see that the doer of my action

is the ‘bat’.

What did the bat do?

The action is ‘hit’. ‘The bat hit…’

What's the receiver?

‘the ball’

‘The bat hit the ball.’

Oh, this is definitely

โอ้ นี่เป็น

a sentence written in the active voice. ‘The food was cooked by the man.’

ประโยคที่เขียนด้วยเสียงที่กระฉับกระเฉงอย่างแน่นอน 'ผู้ชายเป็นคนทำอาหาร'

Now, there are some big clues in this sentence.

ตอนนี้มีเบาะแสสำคัญบางอย่างในประโยคนี้

‘…by the man.’ 

'...โดยผู้ชาย'

Oh, yeah. That's a clue.

โอ้ใช่. นั่นเป็นเงื่อนงำ

Also, ‘was cooked’.

'ปรุงแล้ว' ด้วย

Well here's our past participle and our ‘to be’ verb. 

นี่คือกริยาที่ผ่านมาของเราและกริยา 'to be' ของเรา

This sentence, for sure, is a sentence written in the passive voice. 

ประโยคนี้เป็นประโยคที่เขียนด้วย passive voice แน่นอน

‘The floor was cleaned.’

'พื้นสะอาดแล้ว'

Okay, so I see I have my ‘to be’ verb ‘was’.

โอเค ฉันเห็นว่าฉันมีกริยา 'to be' ของฉันคือ 'was'

And my past participle ‘cleaned’.

และกริยาที่ผ่านมาของฉัน 'ล้าง'

But it seems like I’m missing something.

แต่ดูเหมือนฉันจะพลาดอะไรไป

I have the receiver but not the doer.

ข้าพเจ้ามีผู้รับแต่ไม่มีผู้กระทำ

It's okay.

Like we mentioned before, for some sentences, you may not have the doer. 

ไม่เป็นไร.

This is an example of a passive sentence without the doer.

‘The essay about the economy was written by the student.’

Now, it's okay. I know this is a big sentence. 

ตอนนี้ไม่เป็นไร ฉันรู้ว่านี่เป็นประโยคใหญ่

But I know we can do it.

แต่ฉันรู้ว่าเราทำได้

Because “boom” ‘by the student’.

เพราะ “บูม” 'โดยลูกศิษย์'

There's our clue.

Also ‘was written’.

'ถูกเขียน' ด้วย

We have our past participle and our ‘to be’ verb.

เรามีกริยาที่ผ่านมาและกริยา 'to be' ของเรา

This is a sentence written in passive voice.

เป็นประโยคที่เขียนด้วย passive voice

And our last one. We're almost there. Stay with me. 

และสุดท้ายของเรา เราเกือบจะอยู่ที่นั่นแล้ว อยู่กับฉัน.

‘The best team won the football game.’ 

'ทีมที่ดีที่สุดชนะเกมฟุตบอล'

Good job team.

ทีมงานที่ดี.

Our team is our doer.

ทีมของเราเป็นผู้กระทำของเรา

What did the team do? What's the action?

ทีมงานทำอะไร? การกระทำคืออะไร?

The team won.

ทีมชนะ.

What did they win? They won the football game. 

พวกเขาชนะอะไร พวกเขาชนะการแข่งขันฟุตบอล

This is definitely a sentence written in the active voice. 

นี่เป็นประโยคที่เขียนด้วยเสียงที่ใช้งานอย่างแน่นอน

Ah, good job. 

อา งานที่ดี.

That's some good practicing - recognizing sentences  written in the active and passive voice.

นั่นเป็นการฝึกฝนที่ดี - การจดจำประโยคที่เขียนด้วยเสียงที่ใช้งานและแบบพาสซีฟ

Now, let's move on.

You now have a basic understanding of active and passive voice.

But you're not done yet.

Because you have homework.

You are going to change this active voice sentence into a passive one.

‘Mike taught the passive voice.’

Again, change this sentence into a passive voice sentence and write it in the comments below.

Today, we're going to learn about active and passive voice in English with different tenses.

Now, I know many of you know how to use the active voice

ตอนนี้ฉันรู้แล้วว่าพวกคุณหลายคนรู้วิธีใช้เสียงแอคทีฟ

but switching it to the passive voice can be somewhat confusing.

แล้ว แต่การเปลี่ยนไปใช้เสียงพาสซีฟอาจทำให้สับสนได้

And then now, we're going to use different tenses as well.

Past tense, present tense and future tense.

Oh my gosh.

What are we gonna do?

So let's review changing from active voice to passive voice.

So here, “The child is opening the door.”

ดังนั้นที่นี่ "เด็กกำลังเปิดประตู"

We learned, from before, that active voices, they follow the subject verb object pattern.

เมื่อก่อนเราเรียนรู้ว่าเสียงที่ใช้งานนั้นเป็นไปตามรูปแบบวัตถุกริยา

Here our subject, or the doer, is ‘the child’.

หัวข้อของเราหรือผู้กระทำในที่นี้คือ 'เด็ก'

But what is the child doing?

แต่ลูกกำลังทำอะไร?

“The child is opening ...”

“ เด็กกำลังเปิด ... ” ใน

Here we have ‘ing’ attached to our  verb, ‘open’, which makes ‘opening’.

ที่นี้เรามี 'ing' ติดอยู่กับกริยา 'open' ซึ่งทำให้ 'open'

This is present continuous which means that the child is opening the door right now.

สิ่งนี้เกิดขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่องซึ่งหมายความว่าเด็กกำลังเปิดประตูอยู่ในขณะนี้

At this moment.

ณ ตอนนี้.

And of course the receiver is ‘the door’.

และแน่นอนว่าผู้รับคือ 'ประตู'

Now, when we're switching over to passive voice,

ตอนนี้ เมื่อเราเปลี่ยนไปใช้เสียง passive

we learned from before, that our doer and our receiver swap places.

เราได้เรียนรู้จากก่อนหน้านี้ว่าผู้กระทำและผู้รับของเราสลับที่กัน

So like in our sentence here, our doer and receiver are now in two different spots.

เช่นเดียวกับในประโยคของเราที่นี่ ผู้กระทำและผู้รับของเราอยู่ในสองจุดที่แตกต่างกัน

So ‘the door’ is now in the beginning of the sentence.

ดังนั้น 'ประตู' จึงอยู่ที่จุดเริ่มต้นของประโยค

And ‘the child’ is at the end.

และ 'เด็ก' อยู่ที่จุดสิ้นสุด

“The door is being opened by the child.”

“ประตูกำลังถูกเปิดโดยเด็ก”

‘The door’, still our receiver, is being opened.

'ประตู' ยังคงเป็นผู้รับของเรา กำลังถูกเปิดออก

hmm, so now our verb has changed a little bit.

อืม ตอนนี้กริยาของเราเปลี่ยนไปเล็กน้อย

Our action has changed.

การกระทำของเราเปลี่ยนไป

So we still have ‘is’.

And we have ‘being’, so we have our “to be” verb

but we must continue our present continuous and bring down the ‘ing’.

So, “… is being…” and we have our past participle ‘opened’.

And here we have our preposition with the doer.

And sometimes the doer is left out of sentences.

And that's okay as long as we know that the door is being opened.

และไม่เป็นไรตราบเท่าที่เรารู้ว่าประตูกำลังเปิดอยู่

Now, let's practice and learn about some more tenses.

Let's practice going from active voice to passive voice using different tenses.

มาฝึกเปลี่ยนจากเสียงที่ใช้งานเป็นเสียงแฝงโดยใช้กาลต่างๆ

Let's do it.

Let's go ahead and practice some of these tenses together starting with the present simple.

มาเริ่มฝึกกาลเหล่านี้กันโดยเริ่มจาก Present Simple

“The teacher helps the student.”

“ครูช่วยนักเรียน”

So we know that this is an active voice.

ดังนั้นเราจึงรู้ว่านี่เป็นเสียงที่กระฉับกระเฉง

And now we're going to change it into passive voice.

และตอนนี้เราจะเปลี่ยนมันเป็น passive voice

“The student is helped by the teacher.”

“นักเรียนได้รับความช่วยเหลือจากครู”

And ‘is’ is our “to be” verb.

และ 'is' คือกริยา "to be" ของเรา

And the past participle would be ‘helped’.

และกริยาที่ผ่านมาจะ 'ช่วย'

Let's look at present continuous.

ลองดูที่ปัจจุบันอย่างต่อเนื่อง

“The teacher is helping the student.”

“อาจารย์ช่วยลูกศิษย์”

Oh there's that ‘ing’ again.

โอ้ มี 'ing' นั้นอีกแล้ว

And we'll switch that over to, “The student is being …”

และเราจะเปลี่ยนสิ่งนั้นเป็น “The student is being …”

ah and there's the present continuous back with us

ah และมีความต่อเนื่องของ present อยู่ข้างหลังเรา

and our “to be” verb.

และกริยา “to be” ของเรา

‘helped’ there is our past participle.

'ช่วย' มีกริยาที่ผ่านมาของเรา

“… by the teacher.”

Present perfect.

นำเสนอที่สมบูรณ์แบบ

“The teacher has helped the student.”

“อาจารย์ช่วยลูกศิษย์แล้ว”

“The student has been helped by the teacher.”

“นักเรียนได้รับความช่วยเหลือจากครู”

Past simple.

ง่าย ๆ ที่ผ่านมา

“The teacher helped the student.”

“อาจารย์ช่วยลูกศิษย์”

“The student was helped by the teacher.”

“นักเรียนได้รับความช่วยเหลือจากครู”

Past continuous.

ที่ผ่านมาอย่างต่อเนื่อง

“The teacher was helping the student.”

“อาจารย์ช่วยลูกศิษย์”

“The student was being helped by the teacher.”

“นักเรียนถูกครูช่วย”

Okay, so past perfect.

โอเค ผ่านไปแล้วสมบูรณ์แบบ

“The teacher had helped the student.”

“ครูเคยช่วยนักเรียน”

“The student had been helped by the teacher.”

“นักเรียนได้รับความช่วยเหลือจากอาจารย์”

Future simple.

อนาคตที่เรียบง่าย

“The teacher will help the student.”

“อาจารย์จะช่วยลูกศิษย์”

“The student will be helped by the teacher.”

“นักเรียนจะได้รับความช่วยเหลือจากอาจารย์”

Future continuous.

อนาคตอย่างต่อเนื่อง

“The teacher will be helping the student.”

“ครูจะช่วยนักเรียน”

One of the main reasons why we use passive voice is because we want to emphasize

For example, “Leonardo Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa.”

In this sentence, which is an active voice,

Our focus is now on the receiver, the Mona Lisa, rather than the painter, Leonardo DaVinci.

Another reason that we change the sentence to the passive voice, is because we do not know

For example, “Somebody stole my cell phone.”

So instead, I can express this in the passive voice.

Another reason to use the passive voice could be the doer is just not that important.

For example, “The company was founded in 1955.”

Another reason to use the passive voice is because

sometimes we don't want to blame or say someone is responsible for something.

Let's review the basic grammar for the active and passive voice.

We have a lovely sentence here,

This is an example of a sentence that is written in the active voice.

we have ‘founded’ which is written in the simple past tense.

Well, our ‘to be’ verb has to match with being simple past tense so we have ‘was’

I see that our action is ‘ate’ which is written in past tense.

We remember from earlier, that our actions in passive voice sentences

Let's move on to some more examples.

Let's look at the first one together.

Yeah, there's a mistake here.

there's something about this past participle that just doesn't seem right.

Let's look at the first one.

Well, looking at this sentence, I do not see a ‘to be’ verb.

Whenever you are doing academic writing,
