In this course I'm going to teach you everything you need to know about changing from the active voice to the passive voice.

So before we can start switching our sentences from active to passive,

it's very important for us to understand the different parts of a sentence.

Let's look at our board.

We have a sentence written,  ‘The boy opened the door.’

'소년이 문을 열었습니다.'라는 문장이 있습니다.

This is an example of an active sentence

이것은

which usually follows the pattern of subject verb object.

일반적으로 주어 동사 목적어의 패턴을 따르는 능동 문장의 예입니다

Our subject the ‘doer’ is ‘the boy’. 

. 우리의 '행위자'는 '소년'입니다.

But what did the boy do? ‘The boy opened…’ 

그런데 그 소년은 무엇을 하였습니까? '소년이 열렸다…'

‘open’ is the example of an action.

'열다'는 행동의 예이다.

What did the boy open?

소년은 무엇을 열었습니까?

The boy opened the door.

소년은 문을 열었다.

‘the door’ is the receiver or the direct object.

'문'은 수신자 또는 직접적인 대상이다.

So again, before we can really switch our sentences from active to the passive, 

다시 말하지만, 능동태에서 수동태로 문장을 실제로 전환하기 전에 문장

it's very important for us to understand the different parts of a sentence. 

의 다른 부분을 이해하는 것이 매우 중요합니다.

And the more that we understand different parts of a sentence,

the easier it will be to switching active sentences to passive sentences.

So now let's switch our active sentence over to a passive one.

Here's our sentence from before: ‘The boy opened the door.’ 

다음은 이전 문장입니다. '소년이 문을 열었습니다.'

Now, we have, ‘The door was opened by the boy.’

이제 '그 소년이 문을 열었습니다.'가 있습니다.

Like I mentioned earlier, for active sentences,  they follow the subject verb object pattern. 

앞서 언급했듯이 능동태 문장의 경우 주어 동사의 목적어 패턴을 따릅니다.

Well it's a little bit different from the passive sentence. 

음, 수동태와는 조금 다릅니다.

Before we had the receiver at the end of the sentence, 

문장 끝에 수신자가 있기 전에는

now we have the receiver in the beginning of the sentence. 

이제 문장 시작에 수신자가 있습니다.

‘The door was opened…’

'문이 열렸다...'

Wow.

와우.

Our verb is the same. Or the action is the same.

우리 동사도 마찬가지입니다. 또는 동작은 동일합니다.

But we have a ‘to be’ verb added on.

하지만 'to be' 동사가 추가되었습니다.

‘was opened’ is our ‘to be’ verb plus the past participle of ‘open’.

'개방되었다'는 우리의 '되다' 동사에 '열다'의 과거분사를 더한 것입니다.

Now, it could also be these ‘to be’ verbs as well.

이제 이 'be' 동사도 될 수 있습니다.

But, we're going to use ‘was’.

그러나 우리는 'was'를 사용할 것입니다.

And this will change depending on the tense that we're using in our sentence. 

그리고 이것은 우리가 문장에서 사용하는 시제에 따라 바뀔 것입니다.

We also have ‘the door being opened by the boy’.

'소년이 여는 문'도 있습니다.

Now, the reason why we have it in brackets is because

괄호 안에 넣은 이유는

sometimes we don't need to know who is the ‘doer’.

때로 누가 '행위자'인지 알 필요가 없기 때문입니다.

In this sense, the boy is the ‘doer’. 

그런 의미에서 소년은 '행위자'다.

And this ‘by’ helps us understand that it is the boy who is opening the door.

그리고 이 'by'는 문을 여는 사람이 소년이라는 것을 이해하는 데 도움이 됩니다.

Let's look at some more examples.

몇 가지 예를 더 살펴보겠습니다.

Okay, so now we have examples of active sentences  that we're going to change to passive sentences.  

자, 이제 수동 문장으로 바꿀 능동 문장의 예가 있습니다.

Let's look at our first one.

우리의 첫 번째 것을 봅시다.

‘The woman helped the man.’

'여자가 남자를 도왔다.'

We learned earlier that whenever we're changing active sentences to passive sentences, 

우리는 능동태를 수동태로 바꿀 때마다

we are going to need to switch our doer and our receiver. 

행위자와 수신자를 바꿔야 한다는 것을 배웠습니다.

In this one, the doer, who is the woman, is going to switch places with the receiver, who is the man, 

여기에서 여성인 행위자는 남성인 수신자와 장소를 바꿀 것입니다.

because now the man is the focus of the sentence and will now come to the front - the man.

왜냐하면 이제 남성이 문장의 초점이고 이제 맨 앞에 올 것이기 때문입니다.

But what's our action?

그러나 우리의 행동은 무엇입니까?

Well in our sentence before, our action is ‘helped’. 

이전 문장에서 우리의 행동은 'helped'입니다.

We're going to now change this to the past participle which,  

우리는 이제 이것을 과거 분사로 바꿀 것입니다. 이 과거 분사는

luckily for us the past participle, is ‘helped’.

운 좋게도 'helped'입니다.

Now, we're going to add our ‘to be’ verb which is ‘was’.

이제, 우리는 '이었다'인 'be' 동사를 추가할 것입니다.

So the man was helped.

그래서 그 남자는 도움을 받았습니다.

By whom?

누구에 의해?

The woman.

여자.

Which is now at the end of the sentence.

‘The man was helped by the woman.’

Let's look at our next one.

다음을 살펴보겠습니다.

‘The cat bit the girl.’

'고양이가 소녀를 물었어요.'

Just like we learned before, we're going to switch our doer and our receiver.

이전에 배웠던 것처럼, 우리는 행위자와 수신자를 바꿀 것입니다.

So now the girl is in the front of the sentence.

이제 소녀는 문장 앞에 있습니다.

‘The girl… bit…’ The past participle of bit? 

'소녀… 비트…' 비트의 과거분사?

This one's a little bit different.

이건 좀 다릅니다.

‘bit’ is going to change to ‘bitten’

'bit'는 'bitten'으로 바뀔 것입니다.

When we add our ‘to be’ verb ‘was’,

우리가 'to be' 동사를 'was',

‘The girl was bitten...'

'girl was bitten...'

By what?

을 추가 하면 무엇으로?

The cat.

고양이.

‘The girl was bitten by the cat.’

'소녀가 고양이에게 물렸다.'

‘The knife cut the bread.’

'칼이 빵을 자른다.'

‘The bread was cut by the knife.’

'빵이 칼로 잘렸다.'

I think we're getting this.

우리가 이것을 얻고 있다고 생각합니다.

‘The student answered the question.’

'학생이 질문에 대답했습니다.'

‘The question was answered by the student.’

'학생이 질문에 답했습니다.'

In our last one,‘The teacher taught the class.’

‘The class was taught by the teacher.’

'수업은 선생님이 가르쳤어요.'

Wow. I think we're getting better.

우와. 나는 우리가 좋아지고 있다고 생각합니다.

Let's move on.

So earlier we changed some sentences from the active to the passive voice.

그래서 앞서 우리는 일부 문장을 능동태에서 수동태로 바꿨습니다.

Well now, let's practice recognizing sentences in the active and passive voice.

그럼 이제 능동태와 수동태로 문장을 인식하는 연습을 해 봅시다.

Our first one, ‘The bat hit the ball.’

첫 번째는 '방망이가 공을 쳤습니다.'

hmm,

흠,

well, I can see that the doer of my action

내 행동의 주체가

is the ‘bat’.

'박쥐'라는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

What did the bat do?

박쥐는 무엇을 했습니까?

The action is ‘hit’. ‘The bat hit…’ 

액션은 '히트'다. '배트 히트...'

What's the receiver?

리시버는?

‘the ball’

'공'

‘The bat hit the ball.’

'방망이가 공을 쳤다.'

Oh, this is definitely

아, 이것은 확실히

a sentence written in the active voice. ‘The food was cooked by the man.’

능동태로 쓰여진 문장입니다. '음식은 그 남자가 요리했다.'

Now, there are some big clues in this sentence.

자, 이 문장에는 몇 가지 큰 단서가 있습니다.

‘…by the man.’ 

'...남자로.'

Oh, yeah. That's a clue.

오 예. 그것은 단서입니다.

Also, ‘was cooked’.

역시 '구웠다'.

Well here's our past participle and our ‘to be’ verb. 

자, 여기에 과거분사와 'to be' 동사가 있습니다.

This sentence, for sure, is a sentence written in the passive voice. 

이 문장은 확실히 수동태로 작성된 문장입니다.

‘The floor was cleaned.’

'바닥을 청소했습니다.'

Okay, so I see I have my ‘to be’ verb ‘was’.

좋아, 그래서 나는 내 'be'동사 'was'를 가지고 있음을 알았습니다.

And my past participle ‘cleaned’.

그리고 나의 과거분사 'cleaned'.

But it seems like I’m missing something.

하지만 제가 뭔가를 놓치고 있는 것 같습니다.

I have the receiver but not the doer.

나는 받는 사람이 있지만 행동하는 사람은 없습니다.

It's okay.

Like we mentioned before, for some sentences, you may not have the doer. 

괜찮아요.

This is an example of a passive sentence without the doer. 

이것은 행위자가 없는 수동태 문장의 예입니다.

‘The essay about the economy was written by the student.’ 

'경제에 대한 에세이는 학생이 썼습니다.'

Now, it's okay. I know this is a big sentence. 

이제 괜찮습니다. 나는 이것이 큰 문장이라는 것을 압니다.

But I know we can do it.

하지만 우리가 할 수 있다는 것을 압니다.

Because “boom” ‘by the student’.

왜냐하면 '붐'은 '학생에 의한'이기 때문입니다.

There's our clue.

우리의 단서가 있습니다.

Also ‘was written’.

역시 '쓰다'.

We have our past participle and our ‘to be’ verb.

과거분사와 'to be' 동사가 있습니다.

This is a sentence written in passive voice.

수동태로 쓴 문장입니다.

And our last one. We're almost there. Stay with me. 

그리고 우리의 마지막. 거의 다 왔어. 나와 함께 있어.

‘The best team won the football game.’ 

'최고의 팀이 축구 경기에서 승리했습니다.'

Good job team.

잘했어 팀.

Our team is our doer.

우리 팀은 우리의 수행자입니다.

What did the team do? What's the action?

팀은 무엇을 했습니까? 행동은 무엇입니까?

The team won.

팀이 이겼습니다.

What did they win? They won the football game. 

그들은 무엇을 얻었습니까? 그들은 축구 경기에서 승리했습니다.

This is definitely a sentence written in the active voice. 

이것은 확실히 능동태로 쓰여진 문장입니다.

Ah, good job. 

아, 잘했어.

That's some good practicing - recognizing sentences  written in the active and passive voice.

능동태와 수동태로 작성된 문장을 인식하는 것은 좋은 연습입니다.

Now, let's move on.

이제 계속 진행하겠습니다.

You now have a basic understanding of active and passive voice. 

이제 능동태와 수동태에 대한 기본적인 이해가 생겼습니다.

But you're not done yet.

하지만 아직 끝나지 않았습니다.

Because you have homework.

숙제가 있기 때문입니다.

You are going to change this active voice sentence into a passive one.

당신은 이 능동태 문장을 수동태 문장으로 바꿀 것입니다.

‘Mike taught the passive voice.’

Now, I know many of you know how to use the active voice

but switching it to the passive voice can be somewhat confusing.

And then now, we're going to use different tenses as well.

Past tense, present tense and future tense.

Let's get to it.

So let's review changing from active voice to passive voice.

So here, “The child is opening the door.”

We learned, from before, that active voices, they follow the subject verb object pattern.

Here our subject, or the doer, is ‘the child’.

여기서 우리의 주체, 즉 행위자는 '어린이'입니다.

But what is the child doing?

그런데 그 아이는 무엇을 하고 있습니까?

“The child is opening ...”

“child is opening ...”

Here we have ‘ing’ attached to our  verb, ‘open’, which makes ‘opening’.

여기서 우리는 'open'을 만드는 동사 'open'에 'ing'을 붙였습니다.

This is present continuous which means that the child is opening the door right now.

이것은 현재 진행형으로 아이가 지금 문을 열고 있음을 의미합니다.

At this moment.

지금이 순간.

And of course the receiver is ‘the door’.

그리고 당연히 수신자는 '문'이다.

Now, when we're switching over to passive voice,

이제 수동태로 전환할 때 우리는

we learned from before, that our doer and our receiver swap places.

이전에서 우리의 행위자와 수신자가 장소를 바꾼다는 것을 배웠습니다.

So like in our sentence here, our doer and receiver are now in two different spots.

그래서 여기 우리 문장에서처럼, 우리의 행위자와 수신자는 이제 서로 다른 두 지점에 있습니다.

So ‘the door’ is now in the beginning of the sentence.

따라서 'door'는 이제 문장의 시작 부분에 있습니다.

And ‘the child’ is at the end.

그리고 마지막에 '아이'가 있습니다.

“The door is being opened by the child.”

“아이가 문을 열고 있어요.”

‘The door’, still our receiver, is being opened.

hmm, so now our verb has changed a little bit.

Our action has changed.

So we still have ‘is’.

And we have ‘being’, so we have our “to be” verb

but we must continue our present continuous and bring down the ‘ing’.

So, “… is being…” and we have our past participle ‘opened’.

And here we have our preposition with the doer.

And sometimes the doer is left out of sentences.

And that's okay as long as we know that the door is being opened.

Now, let's practice and learn about some more tenses.

Let's practice going from active voice to passive voice using different tenses.

Let's go ahead and practice some of these tenses together starting with the present simple.

“The teacher helps the student.”

So we know that this is an active voice.

그래서 우리는 이것이 능동태라는 것을 압니다.

And now we're going to change it into passive voice.

“The student is helped by the teacher.”

And ‘is’ is our “to be” verb.

And the past participle would be ‘helped’.

Let's look at present continuous.

현재진행형을 봅시다.

“The teacher is helping the student.”

“선생님이 학생을 돕습니다.”

Oh there's that ‘ing’ again.

아 그 '잉'이 또 있습니다.

And we'll switch that over to, “The student is being …”

그리고 우리는 이것을 "학생은 ..."로 바꿀 것입니다.

ah and there's the present continuous back with us

아 그리고 우리

and our “to be” verb.

와 우리의 "to be" 동사와 함께 현재 진행형이 있습니다.

‘helped’ there is our past participle.

'helped'는 과거분사입니다.

“… by the teacher.”

“…선생님이.”

Present perfect.

현재 완벽합니다.

“The teacher has helped the student.”

“선생님이 학생을 도왔습니다.”

“The student has been helped by the teacher.”

“학생은 선생님의 도움을 받았습니다.”

Past simple.

과거 단순.

“The teacher helped the student.”

“선생님이 학생을 도왔습니다.”

“The student was helped by the teacher.”

“학생은 선생님의 도움을 받았습니다.”

Past continuous.

과거 진행형.

“The teacher was helping the student.”

“선생님이 학생을 도왔습니다.”

“The student was being helped by the teacher.”

“학생은 선생님의 도움을 받고 있었습니다.”

Okay, so past perfect.

좋아, 과거완료.

“The teacher had helped the student.”

“선생님이 학생을 도왔습니다.”

“The student had been helped by the teacher.”

“학생은 선생님의 도움을 받았습니다.”

Future simple.

미래는 간단합니다.

“The teacher will help the student.”

“선생님이 학생을 돕겠습니다.”

“The student will be helped by the teacher.”

“학생은 선생님의 도움을 받을 것입니다.”

Future continuous.

미래 지속.

“The teacher will be helping the student.”

“선생님이 학생을 돕겠습니다.”

“The student will be being helped by the teacher.”

“학생은 선생님의 도움을 받을 것입니다.”

And everyone just remember that this tense is normally not used with the passive voice.

그리고 모두는 이 시제가 일반적으로 수동태와 함께 사용되지 않는다는 것을 기억합니다.

Future perfect.

완벽한 미래.

“The teacher will have helped the student.”

“선생님이 학생을 도왔을 것입니다.”

“The student will have been helped by the teacher.”

“학생은 선생님의 도움을 받았을 것입니다.”

One of the main reasons why we use passive voice is because we want to emphasize

수동태를 사용하는 주된 이유 중 하나는

the receiver instead of the doer.

For example, “Leonardo Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa.”

예를 들어, "레오나르도 다빈치는 모나리자를 그렸습니다."

In this sentence, which is an active voice,

능동태인 이 문장에서

Leonardo is our focus, the painter.

레오나르도는 우리의 초점인 화가입니다.

The Mona Lisa, the painting, is the receiver.

그림인 모나리자는 수신기입니다.

We want to switch them to where now the receiver 

이제 수신자

is in the beginning sentence and the doer is at the end.

가 시작 문장에 있고 수행자가 끝에 있는 위치로 전환하고 싶습니다.

So now our sentence is, “The Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo DaVinci.”

이제 우리의 문장은 "모나리자는 레오나르도 다빈치가 그렸습니다."입니다.

Our focus is now on the receiver, the Mona Lisa, rather than the painter, Leonardo DaVinci.

우리의 초점은 이제 화가인 레오나르도 다빈치보다는 받는 사람인 모나리자에 있습니다.

Another reason that we change the sentence to the passive voice, is because we do not know

문장을 수동태로 바꾸는 또 다른 이유 는 행위자를

the doer of the action.

모르기 때문 입니다.

For example, “Somebody stole my cell phone.”

예를 들어, "누군가 내 휴대폰을 훔쳤습니다."

I do not know who.

나는 누군지 모른다.

So instead, I can express this in the passive voice.

그래서 대신 수동태로 표현할 수 있습니다.

“My cell phone was stolen.”

"내 휴대폰을 도난당했습니다."

And again, since we don't really know who did it,

그리고 다시, 우리는 누가 그것을 했는지 알지 못하기 때문에

we want to focus more on the phone instead.

Another reason to use the passive voice could be the doer is just not that important.

For example, “The company was founded in 1955.”

We may or may not know who founded the company but is not important.

Another reason to use the passive voice is because

Another reason to use the passive voice is because

Let's review the basic grammar for the active and passive voice.

This is an example of a sentence that is written in the active voice.

We have our ‘doer’, the Dutch colonists.

We have our action ‘founded’.

As well as our ‘receiver’, New York.

See active sentences follow the Subject - Verb - Object pattern.

Here is our sentence written in the passive voice,

and the past participle which is “founded in 1624.”

I can swear something is missing though.

Well, the action is missing.

If I look at the active voice sentence,

I see that our action is ‘ate’ which is written in past tense.

We remember from earlier, that our actions in passive voice sentences

need a ‘to be’ verb as well as a past participle.

So I know that since this action is written in past tense,

Let's look at the first one.

Well, looking at this sentence, I do not see a ‘to be’ verb.

Whenever you are doing academic writing,

학술 작문을 할 때마다

it's important to leave out words such as, “I” or “me”.

"I" 또는 "me"와 같은 단어를 생략하는 것이 중요합니다.

So, you can switch from the active voice to the passive voice.

따라서 능동태에서 수동태로 전환할 수 있습니다.

“A survey was conducted by me.”

“제가 설문조사를 했습니다.”

Again, we want to avoid using words such as “I” or “me” because we are not the focus.

다시 말하지만, 우리는 초점이 아니기 때문에 "나" 또는 "나"와 같은 단어를 사용하는 것을 피하고 싶습니다.

We want to focus more on the topic.

우리는 주제에 더 집중하고 싶습니다.

And in this case, the survey.

그리고 이 경우 설문조사.

So we're going to cross out ‘by me’,

그래서 우리는 'by me'에 줄을 긋고

add a period, and have,

마침표를 추가한 다음

“A survey was conducted.”
