So before we can start switching our sentences from active to passive,

it's very important for us to understand the different parts of a sentence.

Let's look at our board.

ನಮ್ಮ ಬೋರ್ಡ್ ಅನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

We have a sentence written,  ‘The boy opened the door.’

ಹುಡುಗನು ಬಾಗಿಲು ತೆರೆದನು' ಎಂಬ ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ನಾವು ಬರೆದಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

This is an example of an active sentence

ಇದು

which usually follows the pattern of subject verb object.

ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ವಿಷಯ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದ ವಸ್ತುವಿನ ಮಾದರಿಯನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸುವ

Our subject the ‘doer’ is ‘the boy’. 

ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ವಾಕ್ಯದ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಯಾಗಿದೆ . ನಮ್ಮ ವಿಷಯ 'ಮಾಡುವವನು' 'ಹುಡುಗ'.

But what did the boy do? ‘The boy opened…’ 

ಆದರೆ ಹುಡುಗ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದೇನು? 'ಹುಡುಗ ತೆರೆಯಿತು...'

‘open’ is the example of an action.

'ತೆರೆದು' ಒಂದು ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಯಾಗಿದೆ.

What did the boy open?

ಹುಡುಗ ಏನು ತೆರೆದನು?

The boy opened the door.

ಹುಡುಗ ಬಾಗಿಲು ತೆರೆದ.

‘the door’ is the receiver or the direct object.

'ಬಾಗಿಲು' ರಿಸೀವರ್ ಅಥವಾ ನೇರ ವಸ್ತುವಾಗಿದೆ.

So again, before we can really switch our sentences from active to the passive, 

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ, ನಾವು ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ನಮ್ಮ ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಸಕ್ರಿಯದಿಂದ ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯಕ್ಕೆ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸುವ ಮೊದಲು,

it's very important for us to understand the different parts of a sentence. 

ವಾಕ್ಯದ ವಿವಿಧ ಭಾಗಗಳನ್ನು ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ನಮಗೆ ಬಹಳ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿದೆ.

And the more that we understand different parts of a sentence, 

ಮತ್ತು ವಾಕ್ಯದ ವಿವಿಧ ಭಾಗಗಳನ್ನು ನಾವು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇವೆ,

the easier it will be to switching active sentences to passive sentences. 

ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸುವುದು ಸುಲಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

So now let's switch our active sentence over to a passive one. 

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಈಗ ನಮ್ಮ ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಒಂದಕ್ಕೆ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸೋಣ.

Here's our sentence from before: ‘The boy opened the door.’ 

ಹಿಂದಿನ ನಮ್ಮ ವಾಕ್ಯ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ: 'ಹುಡುಗ ಬಾಗಿಲು ತೆರೆದನು.'

Now, we have, ‘The door was opened by the boy.’

ಈಗ, ನಾವು, 'ಬಾಗಿಲು ತೆರೆದದ್ದು ಹುಡುಗ.'

Like I mentioned earlier, for active sentences,  they follow the subject verb object pattern. 

ನಾನು ಮೊದಲೇ ಹೇಳಿದಂತೆ, ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳಿಗಾಗಿ, ಅವರು ವಿಷಯ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದ ವಸ್ತು ಮಾದರಿಯನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.

Well it's a little bit different from the passive sentence. 

ಸರಿ ಇದು ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ವಾಕ್ಯಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿದೆ.

Before we had the receiver at the end of the sentence, 

ನಾವು ವಾಕ್ಯದ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ರಿಸೀವರ್ ಅನ್ನು ಹೊಂದುವ ಮೊದಲು,

now we have the receiver in the beginning of the sentence. 

ಈಗ ನಾವು ವಾಕ್ಯದ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ರಿಸೀವರ್ ಅನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

‘The door was opened…’

'ಬಾಗಿಲು ತೆರೆಯಲಾಯಿತು...'

Wow.

ವಾವ್.

Our verb is the same. Or the action is the same.

ನಮ್ಮ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು ಒಂದೇ ಆಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಥವಾ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯು ಒಂದೇ ಆಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ.

But we have a ‘to be’ verb added on.

ಆದರೆ ನಾವು 'ಇರಲು' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

‘was opened’ is our ‘to be’ verb plus the past participle of ‘open’.

'was open' ಎಂಬುದು ನಮ್ಮ 'to be' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದ ಜೊತೆಗೆ 'open' ನ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಭಾಗವಾಗಿದೆ.

Now, it could also be these ‘to be’ verbs as well.

ಈಗ, ಇದು ಈ 'ಇರಲು' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದಗಳೂ ಆಗಿರಬಹುದು.

But, we're going to use ‘was’.

ಆದರೆ, ನಾವು 'was' ಅನ್ನು ಬಳಸಲಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

And this will change depending on the tense that we're using in our sentence. 

ಮತ್ತು ನಮ್ಮ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವು ಬಳಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನತೆಯನ್ನು ಅವಲಂಬಿಸಿ ಇದು ಬದಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

We also have ‘the door being opened by the boy’.

ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ 'ಬಾಲಕನಿಂದ ಬಾಗಿಲು ತೆರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ'.

Now, the reason why we have it in brackets is because

ಈಗ ನಾವು ಅದನ್ನು ಬ್ರಾಕೆಟ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಇಡಲು ಕಾರಣವೆಂದರೆ

sometimes we don't need to know who is the ‘doer’.

ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ 'ಮಾಡುವವರು' ಯಾರು ಎಂದು ನಮಗೆ ತಿಳಿಯಬೇಕಾಗಿಲ್ಲ.

In this sense, the boy is the ‘doer’. 

ಈ ಅರ್ಥದಲ್ಲಿ, ಹುಡುಗನು 'ಮಾಡುವವನು'.

And this ‘by’ helps us understand that it is the boy who is opening the door.

ಮತ್ತು ಬಾಗಿಲು ತೆರೆಯುವವನು ಹುಡುಗ ಎಂದು ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಈ 'ಬೈ' ನಮಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ.

Let's look at some more examples.

ಇನ್ನೂ ಕೆಲವು ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

Okay, so now we have examples of active sentences  that we're going to change to passive sentences.  

ಸರಿ, ಈಗ ನಾವು ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಅದನ್ನು ನಾವು ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಲಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

Let's look at our first one.

ನಮ್ಮ ಮೊದಲನೆಯದನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

‘The woman helped the man.’

'ಮಹಿಳೆ ಪುರುಷನಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದಳು.'

We learned earlier that whenever we're changing active sentences to passive sentences, 

ನಾವು ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸುವಾಗ,

we are going to need to switch our doer and our receiver. 

ನಾವು ನಮ್ಮ ಮಾಡುವವರು ಮತ್ತು ನಮ್ಮ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸುವವರನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ನಾವು ಮೊದಲೇ ಕಲಿತಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

In this one, the doer, who is the woman, is going to switch places with the receiver, who is the man, 

ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ, ಮಾಡುವವರು, ಮಹಿಳೆ ಯಾರು, ರಿಸೀವರ್‌ನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ, ಯಾರು ಪುರುಷ,

because now the man is the focus of the sentence and will now come to the front - the man.

ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಈಗ ಪುರುಷನು ವಾಕ್ಯದ ಕೇಂದ್ರಬಿಂದು ಮತ್ತು ಈಗ ಮುಂಭಾಗಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುತ್ತಾನೆ - ಪುರುಷ.

But what's our action?

ಆದರೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಕ್ರಮವೇನು?

Well in our sentence before, our action is ‘helped’. 

ಸರಿ ಮೊದಲು ನಮ್ಮ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ, ನಮ್ಮ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯು 'ಸಹಾಯ' ಆಗಿದೆ.

We're going to now change this to the past participle which,  

ನಾವು ಈಗ ಇದನ್ನು ಭೂತಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಲಿದ್ದೇವೆ,

luckily for us the past participle, is ‘helped’.

ಅದೃಷ್ಟವಶಾತ್ ನಮಗೆ ಭೂತಕಾಲದ ಭಾಗವು 'ಸಹಾಯವಾಗಿದೆ'.

Now, we're going to add our ‘to be’ verb which is ‘was’.

ಈಗ, ನಾವು ನಮ್ಮ 'ಇರಲು' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸಲಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಅದು 'was' ಆಗಿದೆ.

So the man was helped.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಮನುಷ್ಯನಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಲಾಯಿತು.

By whom?

ಯಾರಿಂದ?

The woman.

ಮಹಿಳೆ.

Which is now at the end of the sentence.

ಇದು ಈಗ ವಾಕ್ಯದ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

‘The man was helped by the woman.’

'ಪುರುಷನಿಗೆ ಮಹಿಳೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದಳು.'

Let's look at our next one.

ನಮ್ಮ ಮುಂದಿನದನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

‘The cat bit the girl.’

'ಬೆಕ್ಕು ಹುಡುಗಿಯನ್ನು ಕಚ್ಚಿತು.'

Just like we learned before, we're going to switch our doer and our receiver.

ನಾವು ಮೊದಲು ಕಲಿತಂತೆಯೇ, ನಾವು ನಮ್ಮ ಮಾಡುವವರು ಮತ್ತು ನಮ್ಮ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸುವವರನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಲಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

So now the girl is in the front of the sentence.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಈಗ ಹುಡುಗಿ ವಾಕ್ಯದ ಮುಂಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾಳೆ.

‘The girl… bit…’ The past participle of bit? 

'ಹುಡುಗಿ... ಬಿಟ್...' ಬಿಟ್‌ನ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಭಾಗವೇ?

This one's a little bit different.

ಇದು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ವಿಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿದೆ.

‘bit’ is going to change to ‘bitten’

'ಬಿಟ್' ಎಂಬುದು 'ಕಚ್ಚಿದೆ' ಎಂದು ಬದಲಾಗಲಿದೆ

When we add our ‘to be’ verb ‘was’,

ನಾವು ನಮ್ಮ 'ಇರಲು' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸಿದಾಗ 'ಆಗಿದೆ',

‘The girl was bitten...'

'ಹುಡುಗಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿದೆ...'

By what?

ಯಾವುದರಿಂದ?

The cat.

ಬೆಕ್ಕು.

‘The girl was bitten by the cat.’

'ಹುಡುಗಿಗೆ ಬೆಕ್ಕು ಕಚ್ಚಿದೆ.'

‘The knife cut the bread.’

'ಚಾಕು ಬ್ರೆಡ್ ಅನ್ನು ಕತ್ತರಿಸಿತು.'

‘The bread was cut by the knife.’

'ಬ್ರೆಡ್ ಅನ್ನು ಚಾಕುವಿನಿಂದ ಕತ್ತರಿಸಲಾಯಿತು.'

I think we're getting this.

ನಾವು ಇದನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಎಂದು ನಾನು ಭಾವಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ.

‘The student answered the question.’

'ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗೆ ಉತ್ತರಿಸಿದ.'

‘The question was answered by the student.’

'ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗೆ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಯಿಂದ ಉತ್ತರ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತು.'

In our last one,‘The teacher taught the class.’ 

ನಮ್ಮ ಕೊನೆಯದರಲ್ಲಿ, 'ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ತರಗತಿಗೆ ಕಲಿಸಿದರು.'

‘The class was taught by the teacher.’

'ತರಗತಿಯನ್ನು ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ಕಲಿಸಿದರು.'

Wow. I think we're getting better.

ಅದ್ಭುತ. ನಾವು ಉತ್ತಮವಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಎಂದು ನಾನು ಭಾವಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ.

Let's move on.

ಮುಂದೆ ಸಾಗೋಣ.

So earlier we changed some sentences from the active to the passive voice.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಮೊದಲು ನಾವು ಕೆಲವು ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಸಕ್ರಿಯದಿಂದ ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಗೆ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

Well now, let's practice recognizing sentences in the active and passive voice.

ಸರಿ ಈಗ, ಕ್ರಿಯಾಶೀಲ ಮತ್ತು ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸುವುದನ್ನು ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ ಮಾಡೋಣ.

Our first one, ‘The bat hit the ball.’

ನಮ್ಮ ಮೊದಲನೆಯದು, 'ಬ್ಯಾಟ್ ಚೆಂಡನ್ನು ಹೊಡೆದಿದೆ.'

hmm,

ಹಾಂ,

well, I can see that the doer of my action

ಸರಿ, ನನ್ನ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವವನು

is the ‘bat’.

'ಬ್ಯಾಟ್' ಎಂದು ನಾನು ನೋಡುತ್ತೇನೆ.

What did the bat do?

ಬ್ಯಾಟ್ ಏನು ಮಾಡಿತು?

The action is ‘hit’. ‘The bat hit…’ 

ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯು 'ಹಿಟ್' ಆಗಿದೆ. 'ಬ್ಯಾಟ್ ಹಿಟ್...'

What's the receiver?

ರಿಸೀವರ್ ಎಂದರೇನು?

‘the ball’

'ಬಾಲ್'

‘The bat hit the ball.’

'ಬ್ಯಾಟ್ ಚೆಂಡನ್ನು ಹೊಡೆದಿದೆ.'

Oh, this is definitely

ಓಹ್, ಇದು ಖಂಡಿತವಾಗಿಯೂ

a sentence written in the active voice. ‘The food was cooked by the man.’

ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದ ವಾಕ್ಯವಾಗಿದೆ. 'ಆಹಾರವನ್ನು ಮನುಷ್ಯನು ಬೇಯಿಸಿದ್ದಾನೆ.'

Now, there are some big clues in this sentence.

ಈಗ, ಈ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸುಳಿವುಗಳಿವೆ.

‘…by the man.’ 

'...ಮನುಷ್ಯನಿಂದ.'

Oh, yeah. That's a clue.

ಒಹ್ ಹೌದು. ಅದೊಂದು ಸುಳಿವು.

Also, ‘was cooked’.

ಅಲ್ಲದೆ, 'ಬೇಯಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು'.

Well here's our past participle and our ‘to be’ verb. 

ಸರಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಭೂತಕಾಲ ಮತ್ತು ನಮ್ಮ 'ಇರಲು' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವಿದೆ.

This sentence, for sure, is a sentence written in the passive voice. 

ಈ ವಾಕ್ಯವು ಖಚಿತವಾಗಿ, ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದ ವಾಕ್ಯವಾಗಿದೆ.

‘The floor was cleaned.’

'ನೆಲವನ್ನು ಸ್ವಚ್ಛಗೊಳಿಸಲಾಯಿತು.'

Okay, so I see I have my ‘to be’ verb ‘was’.

ಸರಿ, ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ನಾನು ನನ್ನ 'ಇರಲು' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದ 'was' ಅನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇನೆ ಎಂದು ನಾನು ನೋಡುತ್ತೇನೆ.

And my past participle ‘cleaned’.

ಮತ್ತು ನನ್ನ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಭಾಗವು 'ಸ್ವಚ್ಛಗೊಳಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದೆ'.

But it seems like I’m missing something.

ಆದರೆ ನಾನು ಏನನ್ನಾದರೂ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇನೆ ಎಂದು ತೋರುತ್ತದೆ.

I have the receiver but not the doer.

ನನ್ನ ಬಳಿ ರಿಸೀವರ್ ಇದೆ ಆದರೆ ಮಾಡುವವನಲ್ಲ.

It's okay.

Like we mentioned before, for some sentences, you may not have the doer. 

ಪರವಾಗಿಲ್ಲ.

ನಾವು ಮೊದಲೇ ಹೇಳಿದಂತೆ, ಕೆಲವು ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳಿಗೆ, ನೀವು ಮಾಡುವವರನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿಲ್ಲದಿರಬಹುದು.

This is an example of a passive sentence without the doer.

‘The essay about the economy was written by the student.’ 

'ಆರ್ಥಿಕತೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಪ್ರಬಂಧವನ್ನು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ.'

Now, it's okay. I know this is a big sentence. 

ಈಗ, ಪರವಾಗಿಲ್ಲ. ಇದು ದೊಡ್ಡ ವಾಕ್ಯ ಎಂದು ನನಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿದೆ.

But I know we can do it.

ಆದರೆ ನಾವು ಅದನ್ನು ಮಾಡಬಹುದು ಎಂದು ನನಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿದೆ.

Because “boom” ‘by the student’.

There's our clue.

Also ‘was written’.

We have our past participle and our ‘to be’ verb.

ನಾವು ನಮ್ಮ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸುವಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ನಮ್ಮ 'ಇರಲು' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

This is a sentence written in passive voice.

ಇದು ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದ ವಾಕ್ಯ.

And our last one. We're almost there. Stay with me. 

ಮತ್ತು ನಮ್ಮ ಕೊನೆಯದು. ನಾವು ಬಹುತೇಕ ಅಲ್ಲಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ನನ್ನ ಜೊತೆ ಇರು.

‘The best team won the football game.’

What did the team do? What's the action?

ತಂಡ ಏನು ಮಾಡಿದೆ? ಏನು ಕ್ರಮ?

The team won.

ತಂಡ ಗೆದ್ದಿತು.

What did they win? They won the football game. 

ಅವರು ಏನು ಗೆದ್ದರು? ಅವರು ಫುಟ್ಬಾಲ್ ಪಂದ್ಯವನ್ನು ಗೆದ್ದರು.

This is definitely a sentence written in the active voice. 

ಇದು ಖಂಡಿತವಾಗಿಯೂ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಶೀಲ ಧ್ವನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದ ವಾಕ್ಯವಾಗಿದೆ.

Ah, good job. 

ಆಹ್, ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕೆಲಸ.

That's some good practicing - recognizing sentences  written in the active and passive voice.

ಅದು ಕೆಲವು ಉತ್ತಮ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ - ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ಮತ್ತು ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದ ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸುವುದು.

You now have a basic understanding of active and passive voice.

Again, change this sentence into a passive voice sentence and write it in the comments below.

Today, we're going to learn about active and passive voice in English with different tenses.

Now, I know many of you know how to use the active voice

ಈಗ, ನಿಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕರಿಗೆ ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಯನ್ನು ಹೇಗೆ ಬಳಸುವುದು ಎಂದು ನನಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿದೆ

but switching it to the passive voice can be somewhat confusing.

ಆದರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಗೆ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸುವುದು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಗೊಂದಲಕ್ಕೊಳಗಾಗಬಹುದು.

And then now, we're going to use different tenses as well.

ಮತ್ತು ಈಗ, ನಾವು ವಿವಿಧ ಕಾಲಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳಸಲಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

Past tense, present tense and future tense.

So let's review changing from active voice to passive voice.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಯಿಂದ ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಗೆ ಬದಲಾಗುವುದನ್ನು ಪರಿಶೀಲಿಸೋಣ.

So here, “The child is opening the door.”

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಇಲ್ಲಿ, "ಮಗು ಬಾಗಿಲು ತೆರೆಯುತ್ತಿದೆ."

We learned, from before, that active voices, they follow the subject verb object pattern.

ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಗಳು, ಅವರು ವಿಷಯ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದ ವಸ್ತು ಮಾದರಿಯನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂದು ನಾವು ಮೊದಲಿನಿಂದ ಕಲಿತಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

Here our subject, or the doer, is ‘the child’.

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮ ವಿಷಯ, ಅಥವಾ ಮಾಡುವವರು, 'ಮಗು'.

But what is the child doing?

ಆದರೆ ಮಗು ಏನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದೆ?

“The child is opening ...”

"ಮಗು ತೆರೆಯುತ್ತಿದೆ ..."

Here we have ‘ing’ attached to our  verb, ‘open’, which makes ‘opening’.

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವು 'ಇಂಗ್' ಅನ್ನು ನಮ್ಮ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದದ 'ಓಪನ್' ಗೆ ಲಗತ್ತಿಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ, ಅದು 'ಓಪನಿಂಗ್' ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ.

This is present continuous which means that the child is opening the door right now.

ಇದು ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿದೆ ಅಂದರೆ ಮಗು ಇದೀಗ ಬಾಗಿಲು ತೆರೆಯುತ್ತಿದೆ.

At this moment.

ಈ ಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲಿ.

And of course the receiver is ‘the door’.

ಮತ್ತು ಸಹಜವಾಗಿ ರಿಸೀವರ್ 'ಬಾಗಿಲು' ಆಗಿದೆ.

Now, when we're switching over to passive voice,

ಈಗ, ನಾವು ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಗೆ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸುವಾಗ,

we learned from before, that our doer and our receiver swap places.

ನಮ್ಮ ಮಾಡುವವರು ಮತ್ತು ನಮ್ಮ ರಿಸೀವರ್ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳನ್ನು ವಿನಿಮಯ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದನ್ನು ನಾವು ಮೊದಲಿನಿಂದ ಕಲಿತಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

So like in our sentence here, our doer and receiver are now in two different spots.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮ ವಾಕ್ಯದಂತೆ, ನಮ್ಮ ಮಾಡುವವರು ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸುವವರು ಈಗ ಎರಡು ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

So ‘the door’ is now in the beginning of the sentence.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ 'ಬಾಗಿಲು' ಈಗ ವಾಕ್ಯದ ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

And ‘the child’ is at the end.

ಮತ್ತು 'ಮಗು' ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

“The door is being opened by the child.”

"ಮಗುವಿನ ಬಾಗಿಲು ತೆರೆಯುತ್ತಿದೆ."

‘The door’, still our receiver, is being opened.

'ಬಾಗಿಲು', ಇನ್ನೂ ನಮ್ಮ ರಿಸೀವರ್ ಅನ್ನು ತೆರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ.

hmm, so now our verb has changed a little bit.

ಹಾಂ, ಈಗ ನಮ್ಮ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಬದಲಾಗಿದೆ.

Our action has changed.

ನಮ್ಮ ಕ್ರಮ ಬದಲಾಗಿದೆ.

So we still have ‘is’.

ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೂ 'ಇದೆ' ಇದೆ.

And we have ‘being’, so we have our “to be” verb

ಮತ್ತು ನಾವು 'ಬೀಯಿಂಗ್' ಅನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇವೆ, ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನಾವು ನಮ್ಮ "ಇರಲು" ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇವೆ

but we must continue our present continuous and bring down the ‘ing’.

ಆದರೆ ನಾವು ನಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ನಿರಂತರತೆಯನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರಿಸಬೇಕು ಮತ್ತು 'ಇಂಗ್' ಅನ್ನು ಕೆಳಗೆ ತರಬೇಕು.

So, “… is being…” and we have our past participle ‘opened’.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ, "... ಆಗುತ್ತಿದೆ..." ಮತ್ತು ನಾವು ನಮ್ಮ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಭಾಗಿತ್ವವನ್ನು 'ತೆರೆದಿದ್ದೇವೆ'.

“… is being opened by the child.”

"... ಮಗುವಿನಿಂದ ತೆರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ."

And here we have our preposition with the doer.

ಮತ್ತು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವು ಮಾಡುವವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಪೂರ್ವಭಾವಿ ಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

And sometimes the doer is left out of sentences.

ಮತ್ತು ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ಮಾಡುವವರು ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳಿಂದ ಹೊರಗುಳಿಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.

And that's okay as long as we know that the door is being opened.

ಮತ್ತು ಬಾಗಿಲು ತೆರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ ಎಂದು ನಮಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿರುವವರೆಗೂ ಅದು ಸರಿ.

Now, let's practice and learn about some more tenses.

ಈಗ, ನಾವು ಇನ್ನೂ ಕೆಲವು ಕಾಲಗಳನ್ನು ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ ಮಾಡೋಣ ಮತ್ತು ಕಲಿಯೋಣ.

Let's practice going from active voice to passive voice using different tenses.

ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ಕಾಲಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಯಿಂದ ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಗೆ ಹೋಗುವುದನ್ನು ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ ಮಾಡೋಣ.

Let's do it.

ಅದನ್ನು ಮಾಡೋಣ.

Let's go ahead and practice some of these tenses together starting with the present simple.

ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಸರಳದಿಂದ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿ ಈ ಕೆಲವು ಕಾಲಗಳನ್ನು ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ ಮಾಡೋಣ.

“The teacher helps the student.”

"ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ."

So we know that this is an active voice.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಇದು ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿ ಎಂದು ನಮಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿದೆ.

And now we're going to change it into passive voice.

ಮತ್ತು ಈಗ ನಾವು ಅದನ್ನು ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಯಾಗಿ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಲಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

“The student is helped by the teacher.”

"ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರಿಂದ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ."

And ‘is’ is our “to be” verb.

ಮತ್ತು 'is' ಎಂಬುದು ನಮ್ಮ "ಇರುವುದು" ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವಾಗಿದೆ.

And the past participle would be ‘helped’.

ಮತ್ತು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಭಾಗವತಿಕೆಯನ್ನು 'ಸಹಾಯ' ಮಾಡಲಾಗುವುದು.

Let's look at present continuous.

ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ನಿರಂತರತೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

“The teacher is helping the student.”

"ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ."

Oh there's that ‘ing’ again.

ಓಹ್ ಮತ್ತೆ ಆ 'ಇಂಗ್' ಇದೆ.

And we'll switch that over to, “The student is being …”

ಮತ್ತು ನಾವು ಅದನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ, "ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ಆಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ ..."

ah and there's the present continuous back with us

ಆಹ್ ಮತ್ತು ನಮ್ಮೊಂದಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ನಿರಂತರ ಬ್ಯಾಕ್

and our “to be” verb.

ಮತ್ತು ನಮ್ಮ "ಇರಲು" ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವಿದೆ.

‘helped’ there is our past participle.

'ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದೆ' ನಮ್ಮ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಭಾಗವತಿಕೆ ಇದೆ.

“… by the teacher.”

"... ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರಿಂದ."

Present perfect.

ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತಪಡಿಸಿ.

“The teacher has helped the student.”

"ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ."

“The student has been helped by the teacher.”

"ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರಿಂದ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ."

Past simple.

ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ.

“The teacher helped the student.”

"ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದರು."

“The student was helped by the teacher.”

"ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದರು."

Past continuous.

ಹಿಂದಿನ ನಿರಂತರ.

“The teacher was helping the student.”

"ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದರು."

“The student was being helped by the teacher.”

"ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರಿಂದ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಲಾಯಿತು."

Okay, so past perfect.

ಸರಿ, ತುಂಬಾ ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿದೆ.

“The teacher had helped the student.”

"ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದರು."

“The student had been helped by the teacher.”

"ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದರು."

Future simple.

ಭವಿಷ್ಯದ ಸರಳ.

“The teacher will help the student.”

"ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ."

“The student will be helped by the teacher.”

"ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರಿಂದ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ."

Future continuous.

ಭವಿಷ್ಯದ ನಿರಂತರ.

“The teacher will be helping the student.”

"ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ."

“The student will be being helped by the teacher.”

"ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರಿಂದ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಲಾಗುವುದು."

And everyone just remember that this tense is normally not used with the passive voice.

One of the main reasons why we use passive voice is because we want to emphasize

the receiver instead of the doer.

For example, “Leonardo Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa.”

ಒತ್ತು ನೀಡಲು ಬಯಸುತ್ತೇವೆ . ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ, "ಲಿಯೊನಾರ್ಡೊ ಡಾ ವಿನ್ಸಿ ಮೋನಾಲಿಸಾವನ್ನು ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ."

In this sentence, which is an active voice,

ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಯಾಗಿರುವ ಈ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ,

Leonardo is our focus, the painter.

ಲಿಯೊನಾರ್ಡೊ ನಮ್ಮ ಗಮನ, ವರ್ಣಚಿತ್ರಕಾರ.

The Mona Lisa, the painting, is the receiver.

ಮೋನಾಲಿಸಾ, ಪೇಂಟಿಂಗ್, ರಿಸೀವರ್ ಆಗಿದೆ.

We want to switch them to where now the receiver 

ನಾವು ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ಈಗ ರಿಸೀವರ್

is in the beginning sentence and the doer is at the end.

ಆರಂಭಿಕ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾಡುವವರು ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವ ಸ್ಥಳಕ್ಕೆ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಲು ಬಯಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.

So now our sentence is, “The Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo DaVinci.”

Our focus is now on the receiver, the Mona Lisa, rather than the painter, Leonardo DaVinci.

Another reason that we change the sentence to the passive voice, is because we do not know

ನಾವು ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಗೆ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಲು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಕಾರಣವೆಂದರೆ,

the doer of the action.

ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವವರು

For example, “Somebody stole my cell phone.”

ನಮಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿಲ್ಲ . ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ, "ಯಾರೋ ನನ್ನ ಸೆಲ್ ಫೋನ್ ಅನ್ನು ಕದ್ದಿದ್ದಾರೆ."

I do not know who.

ಯಾರೆಂದು ನನಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ.

So instead, I can express this in the passive voice.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಬದಲಿಗೆ, ನಾನು ಇದನ್ನು ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಬಹುದು.

“My cell phone was stolen.”

"ನನ್ನ ಸೆಲ್ ಫೋನ್ ಕದ್ದಿದೆ."

And again, since we don't really know who did it,

ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ, ಇದನ್ನು ಯಾರು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆಂದು ನಮಗೆ ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ತಿಳಿದಿಲ್ಲವಾದ್ದರಿಂದ,

we want to focus more on the phone instead.

Another reason to use the passive voice could be the doer is just not that important.

For example, “The company was founded in 1955.”

ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ, "ಕಂಪನಿಯನ್ನು 1955 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲಾಯಿತು."

We may or may not know who founded the company but is not important.

ಕಂಪನಿಯನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದವರು ಯಾರು ಎಂಬುದು ನಮಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿರಬಹುದು ಅಥವಾ ತಿಳಿಯದೇ ಇರಬಹುದು ಆದರೆ ಅದು ಮುಖ್ಯವಲ್ಲ.

What is important is that the company was founded in 1955.

Also, “The house was built in 1955.”

We may or may not know who built the house.

But again, it's not important.

What is important is the house was built in 1955.

Another reason to use the passive voice is because

sometimes we don't want to blame or say someone is responsible for something.

ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ನಾವು ದೂಷಿಸಲು ಅಥವಾ ಯಾರನ್ನಾದರೂ ಯಾವುದನ್ನಾದರೂ ಹೊಣೆಗಾರ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲು ಬಯಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

For example, “Mistakes were made.”

ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ, "ತಪ್ಪುಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ."

Now, mistakes were made by someone,

ಈಗ, ಯಾರೋ ತಪ್ಪುಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ,

but we don't want to blame that person.

ಆದರೆ ನಾವು ಆ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ದೂಷಿಸಲು ಬಯಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

We don't want to say it is their fault. So instead,

we just leave them off and say,

Another reason to use the passive voice is because

the doer is not a specific person.

ಮಾಡುವವರು ನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲ.

For example, “English is spoken in many countries around the world.”

ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ, "ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಅನ್ನು ಪ್ರಪಂಚದಾದ್ಯಂತ ಅನೇಕ ದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ."

We could add “by many people”

ನಾವು "ಅನೇಕ ಜನರಿಂದ" ಸೇರಿಸಬಹುದು

but because it's a really an unspecified group of people,

ಆದರೆ ಇದು ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ಅನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟ ಜನರ ಗುಂಪಾಗಿರುವುದರಿಂದ,

we kind of just leave it off because it's not very necessary.

And the last reason why we use passive voice,

is for academic writing.

Whenever you're doing academic writing, such as essays or articles,

ನೀವು ಪ್ರಬಂಧಗಳು ಅಥವಾ ಲೇಖನಗಳಂತಹ ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ಬರವಣಿಗೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ,

we want to make it as least personal as possible

ನಾವು ಅದನ್ನು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾದಷ್ಟು ಕಡಿಮೆ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕವಾಗಿ

and as professional as possible.

“I interviewed three people.”

Well you can see we have the pronoun ‘I’.

Well we don't want to use that.

ಸರಿ ನಾವು ಅದನ್ನು ಬಳಸಲು ಬಯಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

We want to switch the sentence over to the passive voice.

ನಾವು ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಗೆ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಲು ಬಯಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.

“Three people were interviewed.”

"ಮೂರು ಜನರನ್ನು ಸಂದರ್ಶಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ."

I could say “by me”

ನಾನು "ನನ್ನಿಂದ" ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಬಹುದು

but again, we want to take out the ‘I’ and 'MEs' make it less personal as possible

We have a lovely sentence here,

ನಾವು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಸುಂದರವಾದ ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇವೆ,

“Dutch colonists founded New York in 1624.”

"ಡಚ್ ವಸಾಹತುಗಾರರು 1624 ರಲ್ಲಿ ನ್ಯೂಯಾರ್ಕ್ ಅನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದರು."

This is an example of a sentence that is written in the active voice.

ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯಲಾದ ವಾಕ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಇದು ಒಂದು ಉದಾಹರಣೆಯಾಗಿದೆ.

We have our ‘doer’, the Dutch colonists.

See active sentences follow the Subject - Verb - Object pattern.

Again, our subject, our verb, and our object.

ಮತ್ತೆ, ನಮ್ಮ ವಿಷಯ, ನಮ್ಮ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದ ಮತ್ತು ನಮ್ಮ ವಸ್ತು.

Here is our sentence written in the passive voice,

"ನ್ಯೂಯಾರ್ಕ್ ಅನ್ನು 1624 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲಾಯಿತು" ಎಂಬ

“New York was founded in 1624.”

ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮ ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ಬರೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ.

So in our active voice sentence, ‘New York’ 

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನಮ್ಮ ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ, 'ನ್ಯೂಯಾರ್ಕ್'

is a receiver and written at the end of the sentence.

ಒಂದು ರಿಸೀವರ್ ಆಗಿದೆ ಮತ್ತು ವಾಕ್ಯದ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ.

Well now, in our passive voice sentence,

ಸರಿ ಈಗ, ನಮ್ಮ ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ,

‘New York’ is brought to the front because it is now our focus.

'ನ್ಯೂಯಾರ್ಕ್' ಅನ್ನು ಮುಂಭಾಗಕ್ಕೆ ತರಲಾಗಿದೆ ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಅದು ಈಗ ನಮ್ಮ ಗಮನವಾಗಿದೆ.

Also, for our action, we need a ‘to be’ verb and the past participle.

ಅಲ್ಲದೆ, ನಮ್ಮ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಗೆ, ನಮಗೆ 'ಇರಲು' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದ ಮತ್ತು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಭಾಗದ ಅಗತ್ಯವಿದೆ.

In the active voice sentence, we've had… 

ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ, ನಾವು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇವೆ ...

we have ‘founded’ which is written in the simple past tense.

ನಾವು 'ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ' ಅದನ್ನು ಸರಳವಾದ ಭೂತಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ.

Well, our ‘to be’ verb has to match with being simple past tense so we have ‘was’

ಸರಿ, ನಮ್ಮ 'ಇರಲು' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು ಸರಳವಾದ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನತೆಗೆ ಹೊಂದಿಕೆಯಾಗಬೇಕು ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನಾವು 'ವಾಸ್'

and the past participle which is “founded in 1624.”

I can swear something is missing though.

We don't mention the Dutch colonists here which is our ‘doer’.

Why don't we mention the ‘doer’?

As I mentioned in previous videos, sometimes when you write sentences in the passive voice,

you leave out the ‘doer’ because the information is…

ನೀವು 'ಮಾಡುವವರನ್ನು' ಬಿಟ್ಟುಬಿಡುತ್ತೀರಿ ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಮಾಹಿತಿಯು ...

it's unnecessary.

ಇದು ಅನಗತ್ಯವಾಗಿದೆ.

Also, we're focusing on New York.

ಅಲ್ಲದೆ, ನಾವು ನ್ಯೂಯಾರ್ಕ್ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೇಂದ್ರೀಕರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

So again, there's no reason to mention the Dutch colonists here.

Let's read some of these sentences together.

This sentence is written in the active voice.

ಈ ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ.

“The pizza _blank_ by me.”

"ನನ್ನಿಂದ ಪಿಜ್ಜಾ_ಬ್ಲಾಂಕ್_."

This sentence is written, that's right you guessed it, in the passive voice.

ಈ ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ಬರೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ, ನೀವು ಊಹಿಸಿದ್ದು ಸರಿ, ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ.

I need to figure out what word goes in the blank?

ಯಾವ ಪದವು ಖಾಲಿಯಾಗಿ ಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ನಾನು ಲೆಕ್ಕಾಚಾರ ಮಾಡಬೇಕಾಗಿದೆ?

Well, the action is missing.

ಸರಿ, ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯು ಕಾಣೆಯಾಗಿದೆ.

If I look at the active voice sentence,

ನಾನು ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿ ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದರೆ,

I see that our action is ‘ate’ which is written in past tense.

ನಮ್ಮ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯು ಭೂತಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯಲಾದ 'ತಿನ್ನಾಗಿದೆ' ಎಂದು ನಾನು ನೋಡುತ್ತೇನೆ.

We remember from earlier, that our actions in passive voice sentences

ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿ ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿನ ನಮ್ಮ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಗಳಿಗೆ

need a ‘to be’ verb as well as a past participle.

'ಇರಬೇಕು' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದ ಮತ್ತು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸುವಿಕೆಯ ಅಗತ್ಯವಿದೆ

So I know that since this action is written in past tense,

ಎಂದು ನಾವು ಹಿಂದಿನಿಂದ ನೆನಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇವೆ . ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಈ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯನ್ನು ಭೂತಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯಲಾಗಿರುವುದರಿಂದ,

my ‘to be’ verb also has to be written in past tense.

ನನ್ನ 'ಇರಲು' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವನ್ನು ಸಹ ಭೂತಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ನನಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿದೆ.

So...

ಹಾಗಾಗಿ... 'was' ಅನ್ನು

let's write ‘was’

ನಮ್ಮ 'to be' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವಾಗಿ

as our ‘to be’ verb.

ಬರೆಯೋಣ .

But we still need a past participle.

ಆದರೆ ನಮಗೆ ಇನ್ನೂ ಭೂತಕಾಲ ಬೇಕು.

So looking at our action, ‘ate’…

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನಮ್ಮ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡುತ್ತಾ, 'ತಿಂದು'...

Let me think…

ನಾನು ಯೋಚಿಸೋಣ...

There is ‘eat’, ‘ate’, ‘eaten’.

'ತಿನ್ನುವುದು', 'ತಿನ್ನುವುದು', 'ತಿನ್ನುವುದು' ಇದೆ.

‘eaten’ would be our past participle.

'ತಿನ್ನಲಾಗಿದೆ' ಎಂಬುದು ನಮ್ಮ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಭಾಗವಾಗಿದೆ.

And of course, who was it eaten by?

ಮತ್ತು ಸಹಜವಾಗಿ, ಅದನ್ನು ಯಾರು ತಿನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ?

Me.

ನಾನು.

“The pizza was eaten by me.”

"ಪಿಜ್ಜಾವನ್ನು ನಾನು ತಿಂದಿದ್ದೇನೆ."

And it was good pizza.

Let's look at our second example.

Our passive voice sentence is, “The paper was cut by the scissors.”

ನಮ್ಮ ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಯ ವಾಕ್ಯವೆಂದರೆ, "ಕತ್ತರಿಯಿಂದ ಕಾಗದವನ್ನು ಕತ್ತರಿಸಲಾಯಿತು."

Well, since we have to figure out what's in the blank for our active voice sentence,

ಸರಿ, ನಮ್ಮ ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿ ವಾಕ್ಯಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಖಾಲಿ ಏನಿದೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ನಾವು ಲೆಕ್ಕಾಚಾರ ಮಾಡಬೇಕಾಗಿರುವುದರಿಂದ,

let's look at the passive one to help us with that.

ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ನಮಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಲು ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯವನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

“The paper was cut by the scissors.”

Well, I have my ‘to be’ verb, as well as our past participle.

So when I think about what our action could be,

All right, everyone. I need some help finding mistakes in these two sentences.

ಸರಿ, ಎಲ್ಲರೂ. ಈ ಎರಡು ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತಪ್ಪುಗಳನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕಲು ನನಗೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಸಹಾಯ ಬೇಕು.

Both of them are written in the passive voice.

ಇವೆರಡನ್ನೂ ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ.

Let's look at the first one together.

ಮೊದಲನೆಯದನ್ನು ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ನೋಡೋಣ.

“The book was wrote by Mike.”

"ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಮೈಕ್ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ."

Yeah, there's a mistake here.

ಹೌದು, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ತಪ್ಪಾಗಿದೆ.

Well I see I have my ‘to be’ verb, ‘was’.

ನಾನು ನನ್ನ 'ಇರಲು' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇನೆ ಎಂದು ನಾನು ನೋಡುತ್ತೇನೆ, 'ವಾಸ್'.

But...

there's something about this past participle that just doesn't seem right.

ಆದರೆ...

ಈ ಭೂತಕಾಲದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಏನೋ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ.

Well, what is the past participle of write?

There's ‘write’, ‘wrote’, ‘written’.

ಅಲ್ಲಿ 'ಬರೆಯಿರಿ', 'ಬರೆದಿದೆ', 'ಬರೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ'.

Oh how did I not… how do we not know that? “written”

ಓಹ್ ನಾನು ಹೇಗೆ ಮಾಡಲಿಲ್ಲ… ನಮಗೆ ಅದು ಹೇಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿಲ್ಲ? "ಲಿಖಿತ"

“The book was written by Mike.”

"ಈ ಅಧ್ಯಯನದಲ್ಲಿ, ನಾನು ಸಮೀಕ್ಷೆಯನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ."

Whenever you are doing academic writing,

ನೀವು ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ಬರವಣಿಗೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ,

it's important to leave out words such as, “I” or “me”.

So, you can switch from the active voice to the passive voice.
