Today, I'm going to be teaching you about one of the most commonly used English proverbs.

ဒီနေ့မှာတော့ အသုံးအများဆုံး အင်္ဂလိပ်စကားပုံများထဲက တစ်ခုကို သင်ပေးပါမယ်။

You might have heard it before.

မင်းအရင်က ကြားဖူးတာဖြစ်မယ်။

Let's take a look at the board.

ဘုတ်ကိုကြည့်ရအောင်။

When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

ရောမရောက်ရင်ရောမလိုကျင့်။

So what does this mean?

ဒါဆို ဒါက ဘာကို ဆိုလိုတာလဲ။

It's talking about when you go to other country.

တခြားနိုင်ငံကို သွားတုန်းက ပြောနေတာ။

You have to adapt to that culture so when in Rome.

ရောမမှာရှိတဲ့အခါ အဲဒီယဉ်ကျေးမှုနဲ့ လိုက်လျောညီထွေဖြစ်အောင်နေရမယ်။

It's taking about Italy.

အီတလီနိုင်ငံအကြောင်း ယူနေပါတယ်။

You don't really have to think about Italy when you use this proverbs.

ဤစကားပုံများကို သင်အသုံးပြုသောအခါ အီတလီအကြောင်း သင်အမှန်တကယ်စဉ်းစားရန် မလိုအပ်ပါ။

You can be in any country, any city.

မည်​သည့်​နိုင်​ငံ၊ ဘယ်​မြို့​တွင်​ရှိ​နိုင်​သည်​။

Do as the Romans do.

ရောမတို့ပြုသကဲ့သို့ ပြုကြလော့။

Again it's talking about local people.

ပြည်တွင်းက လူတွေအကြောင်း ပြောပြန်တယ်။

You can use this for anything so when do you use this when can you make use of this proverbs.

ဒီစကားပုံတွေကို ဘယ်အချိန်မှာ သုံးနိုင်သလဲ၊

For example, if you go other country.

ဥပမာ- တခြားနိုင်ငံကို သွားမယ်ဆိုရင်။

You go to the first time.

မင်းပထမဆုံးအကြိမ်သွားပါ။

You find it quite hard to adapt you encounter something new.

အသစ်အဆန်းတွေနဲ့ တွေ့ကြုံရတဲ့အခါ လိုက်လျောညီထွေဖြစ်အောင် လုပ်ဖို့ တော်တော်ခက်ပါတယ်။

You might think to yourself and you might use this proverbs.

သင်ကိုယ်တိုင်စဉ်းစားနိုင်ပြီး ဤစကားပုံများကို သုံးနိုင်သည်။

For example, when I first came to Korea.

ဥပမာ ကိုရီးယားကို ပထမဆုံးရောက်တုန်းကပေါ့။

I felt quite confused.

တော်တော်ရှုပ်သွားတယ်။

I was staying with my friend for the first time and she was make me dinner.

ကျွန်တော့်သူငယ်ချင်းနဲ့ ပထမဆုံးအကြိမ် တည်းခိုခဲ့ပြီး သူက ကျွန်တော့်ကို ညစာကျွေးတယ်။

I thought well that's strange.

ထူးဆန်းတယ်လို့ ကောင်းကောင်းထင်ခဲ့တယ်။

She's not really getting up to the dishes.

သူမသည် ဟင်းပွဲများကို တကယ်မတက်။

Why it that?

အဲ့ဒါဘာကြောင့်လဲ?

So I asked her.

ဒါနဲ့ သူ့ကို မေးလိုက်တယ်။

Oh!

အိုး!

Maybe when I'm in Korea and I go to friend's house should I do the dished when they make

ကိုရီးယားမှာနေပြီး သူငယ်ချင်းအိမ်သွားတဲ့အခါ ညစာ ချက်တဲ့အခါ ဟင်းချက်သင့်တယ်

me dinner.

She said maybe it's a good idea and I thought okay let me go and do the dishes.

အကြံကောင်းတစ်ခု ဖြစ်နိုင်တယ်လို့ သူမက ပြောပြီး ဟင်းပွဲတွေကို သွားခွင့်ပြုပါလို့ တွေးခဲ့တယ်။

I was doing them and I was thinking to myself.

ငါ အဲဒါတွေကို လုပ်နေပြီး ငါ့ကိုယ်ငါ တွေးနေတယ်။

Oh when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

ရောမမြို့၌ရှိသောအခါ၊ ရောမတို့ပြုသကဲ့သို့ပြုကြလော့။

Now we've gone over the proverbs the full sentence.

ယခုကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် စကားပုံဝါကျအပြည့်အစုံကို ကျော်သွားကြပြီ။

You might find them when you hear this in daily speech used by locals.

ဒေသခံတွေသုံးတဲ့ နေ့စဉ်စကားတွေမှာ ဒါကိုကြားတဲ့အခါ သူတို့ကို တွေ့နိုင်တယ်။

They might not say the full proverbs.

စကားပုံများ အပြည့်အစုံ မပြောနိုင်ပါ။

For example, when you have it.

ဥပမာ သင်ရပြီ။

You might hear only when in Rome.

ရောမမြို့၌သာ သင်ကြားနိုင်သည်။

The most people will know what the rest of it means and it sounds more natural so I have

ကျန်တာတွေက ဘာကိုဆိုလိုသလဲဆိုတာကို လူအများစုက သိကြပြီး ပိုသဘာဝကျတယ်လို့ ဆိုနိုင်တာမို့

another example when I went to Japan a few weeks ago.

လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့ ရက်သတ္တပတ်အနည်းငယ်က ဂျပန်ကိုသွားတုန်းက နောက်ထပ် ဥပမာတစ်ခုရှိပါသေးတယ်။

I was staying again with friend of mine.

ငါ့သူငယ်ချင်းနဲ့ ထပ်နေခဲ့တယ်။

It was evening time and we were about to have a bath.

ညနေစောင်းတော့ ရေချိုးတော့မယ်။

She got in first.

သူမအရင်ဝင်ခဲ့တယ်။

She finished and came back out.

ပြီးသွားတော့ ပြန်ထွက်လာတယ်။

She asked me do you want to have a bath now?

ရေချိုးချင်လားလို့ မေးတယ်။

I said yes sure.

ငါပြောတာတော့ ဟုတ်ပါတယ်။

I went in and I was about to empty the bathwater because I thought wow it's my turn right so

ငါဝင်သွားတော့ ရေချိုးခါနီးမှ ရေချိုးတော့မယ်လို့ တွေးလိုက်မိတော့ ဝိုး ကွေ့နေပြီဆိုတော့

she stopped me and came in and said no Sara in Japan you're supposed to get in to save

သူမက ကျွန်တော့်ကို ရပ်လိုက်ပြီး ဂျပန်မှာ ဆာရာ နင်

water at that moment.

ရေချွေတာဖို့ ဝင်သင့်တယ်လို့ မပြောတော့ဘူး။

I thought okay that's a bit unusual.

နည်းနည်းတော့ ထူးထူးခြားခြား ဟုတ်ပြီ ထင်ပါတယ်။

I'm not used to that, but when in Rome.

ကျွန်တော် အဲဒါကို အသုံးမကျပေမယ့် ရောမမြို့မှာ နေခဲ့တယ်။

Yes when in Korea, do as the Romans do.

ကိုရီးယားရောက်ရင် ရောမတို့ လုပ်သလို လုပ်ပါ။

Nobody here is waiting in line.
