sh!t vs sheet | English Communication Problems

And in this video, I'm gonna talk to you about the importance of pronunciation in English.

E in questo video ti parlerò dell'importanza della pronuncia in inglese.

Especially the difference between long sounds and short sounds.

Soprattutto la differenza tra suoni lunghi e suoni brevi.

Why? Because in English there are a lot of words that are almost the same except

Perché? Perché in inglese ci sono molte parole che sono quasi uguali tranne per il fatto

that one has a long sound one has a short sound.

che una ha un suono lungo e una ha un suono breve.

And they have completely different meaning.

E hanno un significato completamente diverso.

...you know... depending on the length of the sound.

...sai... a seconda della lunghezza del suono.

So let me just give you a simple example.

Quindi lasciate che vi faccia un semplice esempio.

If you say, "beach".

Se dici "spiaggia".

You know what a beach is right?

Sai cos'è una spiaggia giusto?

You go on holiday. You like going to the beach.

Vai in vacanza. Ti piace andare in spiaggia.

And does not have the same meaning as b!tch.

E non ha lo stesso significato di b!tch.

And you know forgive me for saying the word but and...

E sai perdonami per aver detto la parola ma e...

It doesn't have the same meaning.

Non ha lo stesso significato.

And it's actually a very rude word, so you should be very careful.

Ed è davvero una parola molto scortese, quindi dovresti stare molto attento.

And... I have a story about that which is quite funny.

E... ho una storia al riguardo che è abbastanza divertente.

It wasn't funny at the time but now it's funny actually.

And when I taught English in France,

I had a student once in my classroom,

And you know I was explaining ..ummm.. I think you know some grammar or something

And he was clearly distracted.

ed era chiaramente distratto.

So I got really angry and I said, "Hey! What are you doing?"

And he said, "Oh oh madam I'm sorry. I'm sorry I'm searching my sh!t."

Umm... so two mistakes.

Umm... quindi due errori.

First mistake - he forgot the preposition 'for'.

Primo errore: ha dimenticato la preposizione "per".

Ok. So 'search for'.

OK. Quindi "cerca".

But that's ok.

Ma va bene.

I understand that.

Lo capisco.

But he said, "sh!t".

Ma lui ha detto "merda!".

And he actually meant 'sheet'.

- for you know a piece of paper.

I didn't get it. And I got really angry, you know.

Non l'ho capito. E mi sono davvero arrabbiato, sai.

And he didn't understand why I was getting angry.

E non capiva perché mi stavo arrabbiando.

And I said, "You can't say that word," you know.

E ho detto: "Non puoi dire quella parola", sai.

And what does he even mean? "Searching your sh!t."

E cosa vuole dire? "Cercando la tua merda."

I mean that's getting really weird.

Voglio dire, sta diventando davvero strano.

And and so then he understand he was like, "No, no, no."

E così poi ha capito che era tipo "No, no, no".

I mean, you know, he showed me a piece of paper.

Voglio dire, sai, mi ha mostrato un pezzo di carta.

As I said, "That's not 'sh!t', that's 'sheet'. Okay.

Come ho detto, "Non è 'sh!t', è 'sheet'. Okay.

So yeah I think he got really stressed out because he didn't know why I was getting angry.

And I didn't know what he was talking about.

So I think you should really - you should be careful.

It's sometimes it's a different word with a completely different meaning.

And if the word that you're saying is rude, is rude, then, you know, it's quite annoying.

So just be careful, okay?
