I probably look a little bit different today and that it's

because I think I live in the hottest flat in England

right, so it's around 27, 28 degrees outside which for England is really really hot

حسنا,ان الحراره تعادل 27 او 28 تقريبا في الخارج

وبالنسبة لانجلترا فهذا حار جدا جدا

لكن في شقتي, انها كالغابة الاستوائية

but inside my flat it's like a damn rain forest

it's humid muggy

انه رطب,وحر.انها كلمه جيده

that's a really good word

muggy is when it's like heavy hot sticky air

"muggy" تعني ثقيل, حار ,هواء لزج ,رطوبه

humidity

and I have a whole wall of windows which is great

وانا امتلك حائط ملئ بالنوافذ

وذلك جيد

because it lets in a lot of light

لانه يسمح بدوخل الكثير من الضوء

but it also

ولكن ايضا يساهم في تاثير الاحتباس الحراري في منزلي

contributes to a green house effect in my flat and so I'm actually boiling

وانا في حاله غليان

so

ولذلك لم اتمكن من تنسيق شعري

I couldn't bring myself to do my hair

لانه كان س....

cause it was just like put it in and then it would fall out again

كنت سانسقه ولكن كان سيخرب في النهايه

and also no turtle necks today

وايضا لا امتلك ياقه عاليه اليوم

Today I'm going to give you some advice on how to stop translating

اليوم .ساقدم لكم بضع نصائح

لتساعدكم ان لا تترجموا الي لغتكم الام

into your native language

Because a lot of people have this problem

لان الكثير يعاني من هذه المشكله

I've asked lots of English learners and learners of other languages

لقد سالت كثير من من يتعلمون الانجليزيه

وايضا من يتعلمون لغات اخري

and they say: "I would be able to speak so much more fluently if I could stop translating"

وقالوا

كنت ساستطيع ان اتكلم بطلاقه

لو فقط توقفت عن الترجمه(الي لغتي الاصليه)

now, most of you probably already knew this

الان.الكثير منكم يعلمون ذلك

if you are new to this channel then I speak fluent Spanish

اذا كنتم جدد في هذه القناه

فانا اتحدث الاسبانيه بطلاقه

and I'm actively learning Italian

وانا اتعلم الايطاليه بنشاط

and I remember at the beginning of my Spanish learning journey

وانا اتذكر في البدايه

عندما بدات رحلتي في تعلم الاسبانيه

I really find it hard not to translate

كنت اجد عدم الترجمه شئ صعب

and translating between English and Spanish can be really really difficult

والترجمه بين الانجليزيه و الاسبانيه

قد تكون صعبه جدا ومزعجه

and annoying

because the word other is so different

لان ترتيب الكلمات مختلف تماما

I'm now learning Italian actively

وانا الان اتعلم الايطاليه بنشاط

واحاول افعل ذلك

and I'm managing to do so without translating into Spanish or English

بدون ان اترجم الي الاسبانيه او الانجليزيه

So

Speaking from my own experience as a language learner

and speaking from my experience as an English language teacher

Okay so I've been thinking about this question for a long time

حسناً , لقد كنت افكر في هذا السؤال

لزمن طويل

and I have actually made some notes on my phone

ولقد اخذت بعض الملاحظات على هاتفي

just because I want to get it in the right order for you

لانني اريد ان اخبركم اياه بالترتيب الصحيح

so bear with me

How to avoid translating into your native language?

حسناً اول نصيحة يمككني اعطائكم اياها

Well, the first tip I can give you and this will not apply to everyone

وهذا لا ينطبق على الجميع

لا تبداأ بالأصل !

is don't start in the first place

if you are in like a beginner level of English

اذا كنت مبتدأً في اللغة الانكليزية

بعض الترجمة حتمية

some translation is inevitable

I mean, you are going to do it

سوف تفعلها غصباً عنك

the way we learn in school is

الطريقة التي تعلمنها بها في المدرسة هي امامريلو ديسباسيتو يعني اصفر

Amarillo

Yellow

Naranja

Orange

بياخة , برتقالي

We learn through translation

تعلمنا من خلال الترجمة

ولكن فكر عندما كنت طفل

However

Think back to when you were a baby

How did you acquire your first ever language?

كيف تعلمت لغتك الاولى؟

Your mother tongue

لغتك الأم

تعلمت من خلال المراقبة , الرؤية , المشاهدة , السمع

You learn through observing, seeing, watching, hearing, smelling, tasting

الشم, الذوق, مشاهدة الافعال

watching actions

لم تتعلم من خلال الترجمة

you didn't learn through translation

لانه لم يكن عندك شيء لتبني ترجمتك عليه

because you had nothing to base your translation on

because you had no mother tongue

لانه لم يكن لديك لغة ام

so babies are capable of learning a langue without any other language as reference

لذا الاطفال يمكنهم تعلم لغة

بدون اي لغات اخرى ك مرجع

ولكن نحن نجد هذا في غاية الصعوبة

yet, we find it incredibly difficult

So, what you need to think is simplification

لذا يجب عليك ان تفكر بالتبسيط

Babies start small and over years and years and years they build their vocabulary

الاطفال يبدؤون بخطوات صغيرة

و خلال الاعوام

يبنون مفرداتهم

and you need to apply this to yourself as well

ويجب عليك ان تتطبق هذا على نفسك ايضاً (اوعى تغلط و ترد عليها!!)الا اذا بدك تتعلم اللغة بعد شي 5 سنين

is much more effective to learn vocabulary by observing and taking things in

انها طريقة فعالة اكثر لتعلم المفرادات( اي بدال ما تترجم معنى موزة بالصيني دغري روح دور ع مطعم صيني و عميل حركات قرود ساعة لبين ما يجيبولك موزة و يعلموك اسمها )

than it is to just you know looking something at a dictionary

حاااااج

and that brings me on to my next point

والان نقطتي الثانية

Oh my God! I'm so hot!

يا ربييييييي شووووب

and that brings me on to my next point which is

اي نقطتي التانية

احضر القاموس ثنائي اللغة خاصتك

Grab your bilingual dictionary and throw it

و اشلفه من الشباك النافذة يعني

out of the window! Don't do that, okay? It might land on somebody's head

لا تفعل ذلك ! (اذا قالتلك زت حالك من البحر بتزت )

من الممكن ان يسقط على رأس شخص ما

Just place it to one side very carefully

فقط ضعه على جنب بحذر

and then pick up your monolingual dictionary

و احضر قاموس بلغة واحدة ( يعني انكليزي انكليزي وهيك )

Is that the word for it?

And then

و احضر هذا القاموس

Pick up the dictionary in the language that you are learning

باللغة التي تتعلمها

كما في حال الكثير منكم سيكون انكليزي

In many of your cases it would be English

and start letting the language define itself

ودع اللغة تعرف نفسها ( هالنصيحة منيحة والله)

في كلمات مئل الاسماء و الافعال

so with words like nouns and verbs it can be a little difficult to understand

يمكن ان تكون صعبة قليلاً للفهم

but that's what you need to learn through observation

ولكن هنا يجب عليك ان تتعلم بالمراقبة(هون بلشت تخبيص اذا شي ما فهمتو رجاع للغتك الام مالك طفل رضيع )

When you are looking at adjective, adverbs and other things like that

عندما تنظر الى الصفات و الاحوال

واشياء مشابهة

Try to understand the definition in that same language first

حاول ان تفهم التعاريف في تلك اللغة اولاً

Because what you are going to be doing is training yourself to think in the language that you are learning

لانك ماذا ستقوم بفعله هو

تدريب نفسك ان تفكر بتلك اللغة

التي تتعلمها

Which brings me on to my third point

وهذا يقودني الى نقطتي الثالثة

Oh my God! What a beautifully well planned out video this is

يا الهي و سيدي و جاهي

يا له من فيديو مخطط بشكل جميل

نقطتي التاليتين

So my next two points are about thinking and speaking to yourself in that language

هن عن التفكير والتحدث الى نفسك

بتلك اللغة

Now I actually recommend that you start by speaking out loud to yourself in the other language

انا انصحكم ان تبدأو

بان تتحدثو مع انفسكم بصوت مرتفع بتلك اللغة

I think I mentioned that in a video about conversation, improving your conversation and communication

اعتقد انني ذكرت هذا في فيديو عن المحادثة

وتحسين المحادثة و التواصل

if you are interested in that then you can watch that video just up there

However speaking to yourself in the other language is a really really key factor

ولكن التحدث الى نفسك في تلك اللغة

هو عامل اساسي

in learning to think in the language

قي تعلم التفكير بتلك اللغة

So,

لذاا كمثال في اللغة الاسبانية وانا اقود

For example with Spanish I'll be driving

احاول وصف الحركات

and I'll describe the movements that I'm going to be making with the car

التي ساقوم بفعلها في السيارة

So I'll be like

لذا ساقول ( ديييسباسيييتووووو)

'Conduciendo, conduciendo, voy a girar a la derecha...

CABRÓN QUE TE ARRANCO LA CABEZA, GILIPO-anyway

على اية حال هذا ما افعله

That it's what I do

or I'll be pottering around my kitchen, cooking and talking to myself about what I'm doing

او عندما اكون اعبث في ارجاء المطبخ

الطبخ و اتكلم مع نفسي

عما افعله الان

and

وستبدأ بملاحظة اخطائك

you will start to notice your own errors, specially when you hear yourself speaking out loud

بالاخص عندما تسمع نفسك تتحدث بصوت مرتفع

Once you are comfortable speaking out loud to yourself in private in that additional language

وعندما تصبح مرتاح في التحدث بصوت مرتفع

مع نفسك وانت وحيد ( عريف حالك جنيت هههههه ) في تلك اللغة

تقدم الى البدأ بالتفكير

Move on to starting to think

انا اعتقد ان التحدث يجب ان يسبق التفكير ( لعما )

Now, I think speaking should come before thinking

But that's just my opinion, everybody learns in different ways

ولكن هذا رأيي

كل يتعلم على طريقته الخاصة

I personally think it's easier to spot errors and get comfortable when you are speaking out loud

انا اعتقد انه اسهل ان تلاحظ الاخطاء

و ان ترتاح باللغة عندما تتحدث بصوت مرتفع

Now, the speaking out loud, we should do in private

الان , التحدث بصوت مرتفع

يجب ان تفعله وانت وحيد

لكن التفكير

but the thinking I want you to do it everywhere

اريدكم ان تفعلوه في كل مكان

on the bus, seeing what goes past

في الباص وانتم ترون الاشياء التي تمر

يمكن لهذا ان يكون مرتبط بالفيديو التي صنعته

it can relate to the video I made on how to learn and remember vocabulary which you can watch up here

والذي يعلم كيف تتعلم مفردات و تحفظهم

والذي يمكنكم مشاهدته فوق

it's a useful method where you observe everything around you check if you see if you know it in your own chosen language

انها طريقة مفيدة

حيث تراقب كل ما حولك

وان ترى ان كنت تعلمه في اللغة التي اخترتها

I know I found it useful

انا اعلم انني وجدتها مفيدة

see if you can apply using a monolingual dictionary to that video

وجربوا ان كان بامكانكم تطبيق نصيحة المعجم احادي اللغة

الى ذلك الفيديو

think I recommend using a bilingual one, see if you can do it with an English dictionary

ولكنني اظن انني انصحكم ان تتسخدموا ثنائي اللغة

وجربوا قاموس انكليزي

yeah, so by thinking in English and I'm talking about

نعم , عبر التفكير بالانكليزي

و انا اتحدث عن وصف الناس

you know describing people, if you see someone walking think to yourself

اذا رايت احدهم يمشي

فكر ان هذا الرجل يمشي

"That man is walking" "He is walking down the street"

هو يمشي في الشارع

او التفكير في افعالك الخاصة

or just go in through your motions

"I'm getting off the bus" "I'm going to go to the shops"

انا انزل من الحافلة !

انا ساذهب الى المتاجر

in your head

في عقلك

you are just starting to immerse yourself in the language

سوف تبدأ في الغوص في تلك اللغة

Ah! That beautiful word! Immerse

تلك الكلمة الجميلة الغملا

to immerse yourself

ان تغمر نفسك

يقودني الى النقطة الخامسة

Brings me on to point number five which is

والتي هي الغمر او الغوص

immersion

وبالمناسبة هذه واحدة من كلماتي المفضة

and that's actually one of my favorite words

I know I have a lot of favorite words but

انا اعلم انه عندي الكثير من الكلمات المفضلة

لكن الغوصص ,, الغوصصص , ممممم , هذا رائع (هي لهجتا بريطانية حلوة انت قول غوص تلات مرات بيوقع حنكك )

immersion

immersion

mmm

that's nice, that's a nice word

انها كلمة جميلة

So immersion is something that you should be doing throughout your learning experience

لذا يجب عليك ان تقوم بالغوص

خلال تجربتك التعليمية

and it's something that you can do whilst multitasking

وهو شيء يمكنك فعله وانت تقوم بمهام متعددة

which is one of my favorite things

والذي هو من اشيائي المفضلة

So, when I'm doing something that doesn't require a hundred percent concentration

عندما اقوم بشيء

لا يتطلب تركيز 100%

مثل الطبخ او التنظيف

Like cooking or cleaning

I always have something on in the background

لديي دائماً شيء اخر في الخلفية

Cleaning, cooking, washing the car, gardening, whatever

whatever any task that allows you to listen to something else at the same time as doing something else

اي شيء يسمح لك ان تستمع لشيء اخر

في نفس الوقت الذي تقوم به بشيء اخر

Have something on in that language in the background

قم بتشغيل شيء بتلك اللغة في الخلفية

I know I'm saying it as if it's revolutionary but really don't forget to do it

انا اعلم اني اقولها وكانها شيء ثوري

لكن حقاً لا تنسى ان تقوم بذلك

I know you can waste so much time and miss out on so much learning

انا اعلم ان تضيع الوقت سهل جداً

وبهذا ستفوت على نفسك الكثير من التعلم

By, by having it on in the background and not even listening you will be getting used to pronunciation and accents

عبر تشغيلها في الخلفية

دون الاصغاء جيداً حتى!

ستعود نفسك على اللهجة الصحيحة والتلفظ الصحيح

by listening and concentrating on what they are saying you will be familiarizing yourself with certain grammar

و عن طريف الاصغاء الى ما تسمع

سوف تعود نفسك

على بعض القواعد

different vocabulary but also you will notice where you are lacking

ومفردات مختلفة

ولكنك ستلاحظ ما ينقصك ايضاً

So, if you listen to a radio program about

اذا استمعت لبرنامج راديو عن

انا اقول التصوير دائماً

ماذا يمكنني ان اقول

so if you listen to a radio program about politics for example

اذا استمعت لبرنامج اذاعي عن السياسة

على سبيل المثال

نقطتي الاخيرة هي :افعل ذلك يومياً

My last point is make it daily

Focus on frequency and consistency

ركز على التواتر و الاستمرارية

Okay, I always say to my students that twenty minutes a day of high quality

انا اقول لطلابي دائماً

ان 20 دقيقة يومياً ذو جودة عالية

Not even studying, just language acquisition

ليس دراسة حتى

فقط اكتساب لغوي

اكتساب لغوي!!!!

انا افاجئ نفسي احيانا

I sometimes surprise myself with the words that come out of my mouth

بالكلمات التي تخرج من فمي

20 دق يومياً من تعلم الانكليزية بشكل جيد

Twenty minutes a day of high quality English time

There we are, that sounds more like something Lucy would say

نعم هذا افضل

هذا يشبه الاشياءالتي تقولها لوسي

it's much much much more valuable

قيم اكثر بكثيييير

من 140 دقيقة في نفس اليوم

than a hundred and forty minutes all in one day

So,

اذا قم بالغوص بشكل عام

Make the general immersion and the thinking and the speaking to yourself

والتفكير و التحدث الى نفسك

something that you do throughout your day, make it part of your routine

شيء تفعله دائماً في يومك

اجعله جزء من روتينك

Make it become automatic to you

اجعله بحيث يصبح اوتوماتيكي لك

You know I sometimes now go for an hour thinking in Spanish

انا الان افكر بالاسبانية لمدة ساعة

or you know thinking out loud in my head in Spanish and then I realize and I go

افكر بصوت مرتفع في عقلي بالاسبانية

ثم ادرك واقول لنفسي

God!

يا الهي ! انا كنت افكر بالاسبانية الوقت كله !

You know, I just said something, I've just been speaking Spanish the whole time

and it is because I do it so often it becomes automatic

و هذا لانني اقوم بذلك كثراً فاصبح اوتوماتيكي لدي

Then

ثم التعديلات الصغيرة

the little tweaks and the little kind of self-help part that you are doing at the end

و قسم مساعدة النفس

الذي تفعله اخيرا

which is

الذي هو البحث عن تعاريف للكلمات

you know, searching definitions for words

working on the grammar that you've identified that you are lacking in

و تعلم القواعد التي عرفتها

التي تنقصك الخبرة فيها

or attempting to expand your vocabulary

او محاولة توسيع مفرداتك

that should be short and should be daily

يجب ان يكون هذا قصيراً و يومياً
