Today we're doing something  a little bit different.

We are delving into the world of poetry.

Ми поринаємо у світ поезії.

Now I have a series of  pronunciation poems coming your way.

Тепер у мене є серія віршів про вимову.

And today I'm going to be breaking  down the poem “Inconsistent”.

І сьогодні я буду розбирати вірш «Непослідовність».

So, let's hear the poem. First of all

Отже, послухаємо вірш. По-перше,

English pronunciation is quite tricky, it’s true,

англійська вимова досить складна, це правда.

As blue, and blew too, they rhyme with two.

As blue і blow теж римуються з двома.

There’s little consistency between fear and bear,

Існує мало узгодженості між страхом і ведмедем,

The latter rhyming with there, their, and they’re.

останній римується з there, their, і they're.

And that’s not the worst of it, consider the ‘o’,

І це ще не найгірше, подумайте про «о»,

Lacks consistency between dot, do and don’t.

What has not got an ‘o’, nor has because.

A cause of confusion is has and was.

English pronunciation is quite tricky, it's true...

Англійська вимова досить складна, це правда...

And this is the first of our /u:/, sounds.

І це перший з наших звуків /u:/.

It's true. As blue and blew  too. They rhyme with two.

Це правда. Як синій і подув теж. Вони римуються з двома.

So here we have a repeat of this long /u:/ vowel  in ‘true’, ‘blue’, ‘blew’, ‘too’ and ‘two’.

Отже, ми маємо повторення цієї довгої голосної /u:/ у «true», «blue», «blow», «too» і «two».

Now the word ‘rhyme’, ‘rhyme’  that has an unusual spelling.

Тепер слово «рима», «рима», яке має незвичне написання.

But the pronunciation is /raım/, /raım/, /raım/.

Але вимова - /raım/, /raım/, /raım/.

Okay?

There's little consistency (in  pronunciation) between fear and bear.

Now, hear that difference.

А тепер почуйте цю різницю.

Fear /fıə/.

Страх /fıə/.

Bear /beə/.

Ведмідь /beə/.

Fear, /ıə/, like your ear. 

Страх, /ıə/, як твоє вухо.

Bear /beə/, like chair /ʧeə/,  hair /heə/, where /weə/.

Ведмідь /beə/, як стілець /ʧeə/, волосся /heə/, де /weə/.

Like the air we breathe.

Як повітря, яким ми дихаємо.

So, we have ‘ear’ and ‘air’,

Отже, маємо «вухо» і «повітря»,

‘ear’ and ‘air’.

«вухо» і «повітря».

Fear /fıə/. Bear /beə/.

Страх /fıə/. Ведмідь /beə/.

Okay, so they are different even  though that spelling is the same.

Гаразд, вони різні, навіть якщо написання однакове.

The latter, rhyming with there, their and they’re.

Останнє, що римується з там, їх і вони.

Okay, so the word ‘latter’ means  the last in the previous list.

Отже, слово «останній» означає останній у попередньому списку.

So, the last in the previous list was a list of  two ‘fear’ and ‘bear’ and the latter was ‘bear’.

Отже, останнім у попередньому списку був список із двох «страху» та «ведмедя», а останнє було «ведмідь».

And it's saying the last one ‘bear’ rhymes  with ‘there’, ‘their’ and ‘they’re’.

І йдеться про те, що останній «ведмідь» римується з «там», «їх» і «вони».

Three different words.

Три різні слова.

And they all have the same sound.

І всі вони мають однаковий звук.

Exactly the same sound.

Точно такий самий звук.

The last one as well.

Останній теж.

Pay close attention to contraction pronunciations  because many students don't like to pronounce  

Зверніть особливу увагу на вимову скорочень, тому що багатьом студентам не подобається вимовляти

contractions in a different way to the  single words, many students would see  

скорочення інакше, ніж окремі слова, багато студентів побачать

that word and say ‘they’re’ but try to pronounce  the contraction ‘they’re /ðeə/’, ‘they’re /ðeə/’.

це слово та скажуть «вони», але спробують вимовити скорочення «вони /ðeə». /', 'вони /ðeə/'.

Let's move on.

And that's not the worst of it. Consider the ‘o’,

І це ще не найстрашніше. Подумайте про «о»,

Lacks consistency between dot, do and don't.

So, look at these three words ‘dot’, ‘do’,‘don't’.

How are we pronouncing that ‘o’? In the first we have /ɒ/, in the second we

/dɒ/, /duː/, /dəʊ/ dot /dɒt/, do /duː/, don't /dəʊnt/.

/dɒ/, /duː/, /dəʊ/ крапка /dɒt/, do /duː/, не /dəʊnt/.

So, there is a lack in pronunciation  consistency then we go on to say

What has not got an ‘o’ /ɒ/...

Що не має «о» /ɒ/...

but we still pronounce it like it has ‘o’ /ɒ/,

але ми все одно вимовляємо це так, ніби воно має «о» /ɒ/,

/wɒ/, /wɒt/.

/wɒ/, /wɒt /.

But it has not got an ‘o’ in the way it's written.

Але в його написанні немає «о».

... nor has because.

... і тому що.

Because /bɪˊkɒz/.

Оскільки /bɪˊkɒz/.

Now here that -ause /ɒz/, /ɒ/, /ɒ/

Тепер ось це -ause /ɒz/, /ɒ/, /ɒ/

-cause /kɒz/, because /bɪˊkɒz/

-cause /kɒz/, тому що /bɪˊkɒz/

So, ‘what’ and ‘because’  both have this ‘o’ /ɒ/ sound.

Отже, «що» і «тому що» мають цей звук «о» /ɒ/.

What has not got an o, nor has because. A cause of confusion is has an was.

Те, що не має о, а також тому що. Причиною плутанини є було.

Did you hear the difference between  how I pronounce ‘cause’ /kɔːz/ when  

Ви чули різницю між тим, як я вимовляю слово «причина» /kɔːz/, коли

it's on its own as opposed to when  it's in the word ‘because’ /bɪˊkɒz/.

воно є самостійним, і коли воно є в слові «тому що» /bɪˊkɒz/.

Cause /kɔːz/, because /bɪˊkɒz/.

Причина /kɔːz/, тому що /bɪˊkɒz/.

Cause /kɔːz/, because /bɪˊkɒz/.

In ‘because’ /bɪˊkɒz/ it’s short /ɒ/, but  in cause /kɔːz/ we have this long /ɔː/. 

У 'because' /bɪˊkɒz/ це короткий /ɒ/, але в Cause /kɔːz/ ми маємо такий довгий /ɔː/.

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/ because /bɪˊkɒz/ – cause /kɔːz/

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/ тому що /bɪˊkɒz/ – причина /kɔːz/

A cause of confusion is has and was.

They both have an ‘-as’, but ‘has’  is /..əz/ and ‘was’ is /..ɒz/

So confusing.

They both rhyme, tough – stuff.

to do. Prioritize pronunciation  and you will fly through /θru:/.
