British English Pronunciation Practice - "Inconsistent" Poem & Explanation

Today we're doing something  a little bit different.

今日、私たちは少し違うことをしています。

We are delving into the world of poetry.

詩の世界に浸っています。

Now I have a series of  pronunciation poems coming your way.

今、私は一連の発音詩をあなたの元に届けています.

And today I'm going to be breaking  down the poem “Inconsistent”.

そして今日は、「矛盾」という詩を分析します。

So, let's hear the poem. First of all

それでは、詩を聞いてみましょう。まず第一に、

English pronunciation is quite tricky, it’s true,

英語の発音は非常にトリッキーです, それは本当です,

As blue, and blew too, they rhyme with two.

As blue, and blew too, they rhyme with two.

There’s little consistency between fear and bear,

恐怖と熊の

The latter rhyming with there, their, and they’re.

And that’s not the worst of it, consider the ‘o’,

Lacks consistency between dot, do and don’t.

Okay, so let's break this poem down.

English pronunciation is quite tricky, it's true...

英語の発音はかなりトリッキーです。それは本当です...

And this is the first of our /u:/, sounds.

そして、これが最初の /u:/, の音です。

It's true. As blue and blew  too. They rhyme with two.

それは本当です。青く吹いたように。彼らは2で韻を踏む.

So here we have a repeat of this long /u:/ vowel  in ‘true’, ‘blue’, ‘blew’, ‘too’ and ‘two’.

ここでは、この長い /u:/ 母音が 'true'、'blue'、'blew'、'too'、'two' で繰り返されています。

Now the word ‘rhyme’, ‘rhyme’  that has an unusual spelling.

今では「rhyme」という単語、「rhyme」という変わった綴りがあります。

But the pronunciation is /raım/, /raım/, /raım/.

しかし、発音は /raım/、/raım/、/raım/ です。

Okay?

There's little consistency (in  pronunciation) between fear and bear.

Now, hear that difference.

Fear, /ıə/, like your ear.

So, we have ‘ear’ and ‘air’,

Fear /fıə/. Bear /beə/.

Okay, so they are different even  though that spelling is the same.

さて、スペルが同じであっても、それらは異なります。

The latter, rhyming with there, their and they’re.

後者は、there と韻を踏んで、their と they're です。

Okay, so the word ‘latter’ means  the last in the previous list.

さて、'latter' という単語は、前のリストの最後を意味します。

So, the last in the previous list was a list of  two ‘fear’ and ‘bear’ and the latter was ‘bear’.

したがって、前のリストの最後は 2 つの「恐怖」と「熊」のリストで、後者は「熊」でした。

And it's saying the last one ‘bear’ rhymes  with ‘there’, ‘their’ and ‘they’re’.

そして、最後の 'bear' は 'there'、'their' および 'they're' と韻を踏んでいます。

Three different words.

3 つの異なる単語。

And they all have the same sound.

Exactly the same sound.

The last one as well.

Pay close attention to contraction pronunciations  because many students don't like to pronounce

contractions in a different way to the  single words, many students would see

that word and say ‘they’re’ but try to pronounce  the contraction ‘they’re /ðeə/’, ‘they’re /ðeə/’.

Let's move on.

And that's not the worst of it. Consider the ‘o’,

So, look at these three words ‘dot’, ‘do’,‘don't’.

/dɒ/, /duː/, /dəʊ/ ドット /dɒt/, do /duː/, do not /dəʊnt/.

So, there is a lack in pronunciation  consistency then we go on to say

What has not got an ‘o’ /ɒ/...

「o」がないものは /ɒ/... と言い続けます

but we still pronounce it like it has ‘o’ /ɒ/,

が、それでも「o」があるように発音します /ɒ/、

/wɒ/, /wɒt/.

/wɒ/、/wɒt /。

But it has not got an ‘o’ in the way it's written.

しかし、その書き方には「o」がありません。

... nor has because.

...だからもありません。

Because /bɪˊkɒz/.

なぜなら /bɪˊkɒz/.

Now here that -ause /ɒz/, /ɒ/, /ɒ/

ここで、-ause /ɒz/, /ɒ/, /ɒ/

-cause /kɒz/, because /bɪˊkɒz/

-cause /kɒz/, because /bɪˊkɒz/

So, ‘what’ and ‘because’  both have this ‘o’ /ɒ/ sound.

だから、'what' と 'because' は両方ともこの 'o' /ɒ/ 音を持っています.

What has not got an o, nor has because. A cause of confusion is has an was.

o を持っていないもの、または理由を持っていないもの。混乱の原因は、あったことです。

Did you hear the difference between  how I pronounce ‘cause’ /kɔːz/ when  

私が「cause」/kɔːz/ を単独で

it's on its own as opposed to when  it's in the word ‘because’ /bɪˊkɒz/.

発音するときと、「because」/bɪˊkɒz/ という単語の中にあるときの発音の違いを聞いたことがありますか

Cause /kɔːz/, because /bɪˊkɒz/.

。 /bɪˊkɒz/ のため、/kɔːz/ を引き起こします。

Cause /kɔːz/, because /bɪˊkɒz/.

/bɪˊkɒz/ のため、/kɔːz/ を引き起こします。

In ‘because’ /bɪˊkɒz/ it’s short /ɒ/, but  in cause /kɔːz/ we have this long /ɔː/. 

'because' /bɪˊkɒz/ では短い /ɒ/ ですが、cause /kɔːz/ では長い /ɔː/ になります。

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/ because /bɪˊkɒz/ – cause /kɔːz/

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/ なぜなら /bɪˊkɒz/ – 原因 /kɔːz/

A cause of confusion is has and was.

混乱の原因は、持っていたものとあったものです。

They both have an ‘-as’, but ‘has’  is /..əz/ and ‘was’ is /..ɒz/

どちらも「-as」を持っていますが、「has」は /..əz/ で、「was」は /..ɒz/

/..əz/ - /..ɒz/

/..əz/ - /..ɒz/

So confusing.

Though, thought and through...

Though /ðəʊ/, thought /θɔ:t / and through /θru:/

/ðəʊ/ でも考えて /θɔ:t / そして /θru:/ を通して、

they boggle the mind.

彼らは頭がおかしくなる。

They look so similar but they're so different.

彼らはとても似ているように見えますが、とても異なっています。

Tough stuff...

タフなもの...

They both rhyme, tough – stuff.

どちらも韻を踏んでいます。タフなものです。

Tough stuff our words, they are not well designed.

フォークはウォークで、鳥はフット/fʊt/で韻を踏むが、ブート/bu:t/ではなく、プット/pʊt/で韻を踏む。
