British English Pronunciation Practice - "Inconsistent" Poem & Explanation

Today we're doing something  a little bit different.

오늘 우리는 조금 다른 것을 할 것입니다.

We are delving into the world of poetry.

우리는 시의 세계를 탐구하고 있습니다.

Now I have a series of  pronunciation poems coming your way.

이제 일련의 발음 시를 준비했습니다.

And today I'm going to be breaking  down the poem “Inconsistent”.

그리고 오늘은 'Inconsistent'라는 시를 분석해 보겠습니다.

So, let's hear the poem. First of all

자, 시를 들어봅시다. 우선

English pronunciation is quite tricky, it’s true,

영어 발음이 상당히 까다롭습니다. 사실입니다

As blue, and blew too, they rhyme with two.

There’s little consistency between fear and bear,

두려움과 곰 사이에는 일관성이 거의 없습니다.

The latter rhyming with there, their, and they’re.

후자는 거기, 그들의, 그리고 그들은 있습니다.

And that’s not the worst of it, consider the ‘o’,

그리고 그것은 최악이 아닙니다. 'o'를 고려하십시오.

Lacks consistency between dot, do and don’t.

What has not got an ‘o’, nor has because.

Okay, so let's break this poem down.

자, 이 시를 분해해 봅시다.

Let's start!

시작하자!

English pronunciation is quite tricky, it's true...

영어 발음은 꽤 까다롭습니다. 사실입니다...

And this is the first of our /u:/, sounds.

그리고 이것이 우리의 /u:/ 소리의 첫 번째 소리입니다.

It's true. As blue and blew  too. They rhyme with two.

사실입니다. 파랗고 불었다 . 그들은 둘과 운율이 있습니다.

So here we have a repeat of this long /u:/ vowel  in ‘true’, ‘blue’, ‘blew’, ‘too’ and ‘two’.

그래서 여기에 'true', 'blue', 'blew', 'too', 'two'에서 이 긴 /u:/ 모음이 반복됩니다.

Now the word ‘rhyme’, ‘rhyme’  that has an unusual spelling.

이제 철자가 특이한 '라임', '라임'이라는 단어입니다 .

But the pronunciation is /raım/, /raım/, /raım/.

그러나 발음은 /raım/, /raım/, /raım/입니다.

There's little consistency (in  pronunciation) between fear and bear.

두려움과 곰 사이에는 일관성(발음)이 거의 없습니다.

Now, hear that difference.

이제 그 차이를 들어보세요.

Fear /fıə/.

두려움 /fıə/.

Bear /beə/.

곰 /beə/.

Fear, /ıə/, like your ear. 

두려움, /ıə/, 당신의 귀처럼.

Bear /beə/, like chair /ʧeə/,  hair /heə/, where /weə/.

Bear /beə/, like chair /ʧeə/, hair /heə/, where /weə/.

Like the air we breathe.

우리가 숨 쉬는 공기처럼.

So, we have ‘ear’ and ‘air’,

그래서 우리는 '귀'와 '공기',

‘ear’ and ‘air’.

'귀'와 '공기'를 가지고 있습니다.

Fear /fıə/. Bear /beə/.

두려움 /fıə/. 곰 /beə/.

Okay, so they are different even  though that spelling is the same.

알겠습니다. 철자가 같아도 서로 다릅니다.

The latter, rhyming with there, their and they’re.

후자는 그들과 운율이 있습니다.

Okay, so the word ‘latter’ means  the last in the previous list.

알겠습니다. '후자'라는 단어는 이전 목록의 마지막을 의미합니다.

So, the last in the previous list was a list of  two ‘fear’ and ‘bear’ and the latter was ‘bear’.

그래서 이전 목록의 마지막은 두 개의 '두려움'과 '곰'의 목록이었고 후자는 '곰'이었습니다.

And it's saying the last one ‘bear’ rhymes  with ‘there’, ‘their’ and ‘they’re’.

그리고 마지막 'bear'가 'there', 'their' 및 'they're'와 라임이 맞다고 합니다.

Three different words.

세 가지 다른 단어.

And they all have the same sound.

그리고 그들은 모두 같은 소리를 가지고 있습니다.

Exactly the same sound.

정확히 같은 소리입니다.

The last one as well.

마지막도 마찬가지입니다.

Pay close attention to contraction pronunciations  because many students don't like to pronounce  

수축 발음에 세심한 주의를 기울이세요. 많은 학생들이 수축을 한 단어와 다른 방식으로 발음하는 것을 좋아하지 않기 때문입니다.

contractions in a different way to the  single words, many students would see  

많은 학생들이

that word and say ‘they’re’ but try to pronounce  the contraction ‘they’re /ðeə/’, ‘they’re /ðeə/’.

그 단어를 보고 'they're'라고 말하지만 수축을 'they're /ðeə로 발음하려고 합니다. /', '그들은 /ðeə/'입니다.

Let's move on.

계속합시다.

And that's not the worst of it. Consider the ‘o’,

그리고 그것은 최악이 아닙니다. 'o'를 고려하십시오.

Lacks consistency between dot, do and don't.

So, look at these three words ‘dot’, ‘do’,‘don't’.

How are we pronouncing that ‘o’? In the first we have /ɒ/, in the second we

have /uː/, in the third we have /əʊ/. /ɒ/, /uː/, /əʊ/

는 /uː/, 세 번째는 /əʊ/입니다. /ɒ/, /uː/, /əʊ/

/dɒ/, /duː/, /dəʊ/ dot /dɒt/, do /duː/, don't /dəʊnt/.

/dɒ/, /duː/, /dəʊ/ dot /dɒt/, do /duː/, don't /dəʊnt/.

So, there is a lack in pronunciation  consistency then we go on to say

그래서 발음의 일관성이 부족해서

What has not got an ‘o’ /ɒ/...

What has not got an 'o' /ɒ/... 라고

but we still pronounce it like it has ‘o’ /ɒ/,

계속해서 'o' /ɒ/,

/wɒ/, /wɒt/.

/wɒ/, /wɒt가 있는 것처럼 발음합니다. /.

But it has not got an ‘o’ in the way it's written.

그러나 쓰여진 방식에 'o'가 없습니다.

... nor has because.

... 때문도 아닙니다.

Because /bɪˊkɒz/.

/bɪˊkɒz/ 때문입니다.

Now here that -ause /ɒz/, /ɒ/, /ɒ/

이제 -ause /ɒz/, /ɒ/, /ɒ/

-cause /kɒz/, because /bɪˊkɒz/

-cause /kɒz/, 왜냐하면 /bɪˊkɒz/

So, ‘what’ and ‘because’  both have this ‘o’ /ɒ/ sound.

그래서 'what'과 'because' 모두 'o' /ɒ/ 소리가 납니다.

What has not got an o, nor has because. A cause of confusion is has an was.

o가 없는 것, 또는 이유가 없는 것. 혼동의 원인은 있었습니다.

Did you hear the difference between  how I pronounce ‘cause’ /kɔːz/ when  

내가 'cause' /kɔːz/를 발음할 때 '

it's on its own as opposed to when  it's in the word ‘because’ /bɪˊkɒz/.

because' /bɪˊkɒz/라는 단어에 있을 때와 그 자체로 발음할 때의 차이점을 들으셨나요?

Cause /kɔːz/, because /bɪˊkɒz/.

원인 /kɔːz/, 왜냐하면 /bɪˊkɒz/.

Cause /kɔːz/, because /bɪˊkɒz/.

원인 /kɔːz/, 왜냐하면 /bɪˊkɒz/.

In ‘because’ /bɪˊkɒz/ it’s short /ɒ/, but  in cause /kɔːz/ we have this long /ɔː/. 

'because' /bɪˊkɒz/에서는 /ɒ/가 짧지만 cause /kɔːz/에서는 이렇게 긴 /ɔː/가 있습니다.

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/ /

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/ because /bɪˊkɒz/ – cause /kɔːz/

ɒ/ - /ɔː/ /bɪˊkɒz/ – 원인 /kɔːz/

A cause of confusion is has and was.

혼동의 원인은 has와 was입니다.

They both have an ‘-as’, but ‘has’  is /..əz/ and ‘was’ is /..ɒz/

둘 다 '-as'가 있지만 'has' 는 /..əz/이고 'was'는 /..ɒz/

/..əz/ - /..ɒz/

/..əz/ - /..ɒz/입니다.

So confusing.

너무 혼란스럽습니다.

Though, thought and through...

비록, 생각을 통해...

Though /ðəʊ/, thought /θɔ:t / and through /θru:/

비록 /ðəʊ/, 생각 /θɔ:t /을 통해 /θru:/

they boggle the mind.

그들은 마음을 놀라게 합니다.

They look so similar but they're so different.

그들은 너무 비슷해 보이지만 너무 다릅니다.

Tough stuff...

They both rhyme, tough – stuff.

둘 다 라임이 맞고 힘든 물건입니다.

Tough stuff our words, they are not well designed.

우리의 말은 잘 설계되지 않았습니다.

Fork rhymes with walk, bird with word Foot /fʊt/ rhymes with put /pʊt/, not boot /bu:t/.

포크 운율은 walk, 새 단어는 Foot /fʊt/ 운율은 put /pʊt/, boot /bu:t/는 운율이 아닙니다.

So, ‘foot’ /fʊt/, boot /bu:t/,

/ʊ/ – /u:/, /ʊ/ – /u:/

They are different.

/ʊ/ – /u:/, /ʊ/ – /u:/ 서로

다릅니다.

Foot /fʊt/ rhymes with put /pʊt/, not boot /bu:t/.

Foot /fʊt/는 boot /bu:t/가 아니라 put /pʊt/와 운율이 같습니다.

I heard... 'Cause ‘heard’ /hɜ:d/  rhymes with ‘word’ /wɜ:d/.

들었어... '들었다' /hɜ:d/는 '단어' /wɜ:d/와 운율이 같으니까.
