Today we're doing something  a little bit different.

We are delving into the world of poetry.

Now I have a series of  pronunciation poems coming your way.

And today I'm going to be breaking  down the poem “Inconsistent”.

So, let's hear the poem. First of all

English pronunciation is quite tricky, it’s true,

As blue, and blew too, they rhyme with two.

There’s little consistency between fear and bear,

Okay, so let's break this poem down.

Let's start!

English pronunciation is quite tricky, it's true...

การออกเสียงภาษาอังกฤษค่อนข้างยุ่งยากก็จริง...

And this is the first of our /u:/, sounds.

และนี่คือเสียง /u:/, เสียงแรกของเรา

It's true. As blue and blew  too. They rhyme with two.

มันเป็นความจริง. เป็นสีน้ำเงินและพัดด้วย พวกเขาคล้องจองกับสอง

So here we have a repeat of this long /u:/ vowel  in ‘true’, ‘blue’, ‘blew’, ‘too’ and ‘two’.

Now the word ‘rhyme’, ‘rhyme’  that has an unusual spelling.

But the pronunciation is /raım/, /raım/, /raım/.

There's little consistency (in  pronunciation) between fear and bear.

Now, hear that difference.

Fear /fıə/. Bear /beə/.

Okay, so they are different even  though that spelling is the same.

The latter, rhyming with there, their and they’re.

Okay, so the word ‘latter’ means  the last in the previous list.

โอเค คำว่า 'หลัง' หมายถึงหลังสุดในรายการก่อนหน้า

So, the last in the previous list was a list of  two ‘fear’ and ‘bear’ and the latter was ‘bear’.

รายการสุดท้ายในรายการก่อนหน้านี้คือรายการของ 'ความกลัว' และ 'หมี' สองรายการ และรายการหลังคือ 'หมี'

And it's saying the last one ‘bear’ rhymes  with ‘there’, ‘their’ and ‘they’re’.

และมันกำลังพูดว่า 'หมี' ตัวสุดท้ายคล้องจองกับ 'มี' 'ของพวกเขา' และ 'พวกเขากำลัง'

Three different words.

สามคำที่แตกต่างกัน

And they all have the same sound.

Exactly the same sound.

The last one as well.

Pay close attention to contraction pronunciations  because many students don't like to pronounce  

ให้ความสนใจเป็นพิเศษกับการออกเสียงตัวย่อ เนื่องจากนักเรียนจำนวนมากไม่ชอบออกเสียง

contractions in a different way to the  single words, many students would see  

ตัวย่อในลักษณะที่แตกต่างจากคำเดี่ยว นักเรียนหลายคนจะเห็น

that word and say ‘they’re’ but try to pronounce  the contraction ‘they’re /ðeə/’, ‘they’re /ðeə/’.

คำนั้นและพูดว่า 'พวกเขากำลัง' แต่พยายามออกเสียงตัวย่อว่า 'พวกเขากำลัง /ðeə /', 'พวกเขาคือ /ðeə/'

Let's move on.

And that's not the worst of it. Consider the ‘o’,

Lacks consistency between dot, do and don't.

/dɒ/, /duː/, /dəʊ/ dot /dɒt/, do /duː/, don't /dəʊnt/.

/dɒ/, /duː/, /dəʊ/ dot /dɒt/, do /duː/, อย่า /dəʊnt/

So, there is a lack in pronunciation  consistency then we go on to say

ดังนั้น จึงขาดความสม่ำเสมอในการออกเสียง เราจึงพูดต่อไปว่า

What has not got an ‘o’ /ɒ/...

What has no 'o' /ɒ/...

but we still pronounce it like it has ‘o’ /ɒ/,

/wɒ/, /wɒt/.

/wɒ/, /wɒt /.

But it has not got an ‘o’ in the way it's written.

แต่มันไม่ได้มี 'o' ในวิธีที่มันเขียน

... nor has because.

... และไม่ได้เพราะ

Because /bɪˊkɒz/.

เพราะ /bɪˊkɒz/

Now here that -ause /ɒz/, /ɒ/, /ɒ/

ทีนี้ -ause /ɒz/, /ɒ/, /ɒ/

-cause /kɒz/, because /bɪˊkɒz/

-cause /kɒz/, เพราะ /bɪˊkɒz/

So, ‘what’ and ‘because’  both have this ‘o’ /ɒ/ sound.

ดังนั้น 'อะไร' และ 'เพราะว่า' ต่างก็มีเสียง 'o' /ɒ/

What has not got an o, nor has because. A cause of confusion is has an was.

สิ่งที่ไม่มี o หรือไม่มีเพราะ สาเหตุของความสับสนคือ has an was.

Did you hear the difference between  how I pronounce ‘cause’ /kɔːz/ when  

คุณได้ยินความแตกต่างระหว่างวิธีที่ฉันออกเสียง 'สาเหตุ' /kɔːz/ เมื่อ

it's on its own as opposed to when  it's in the word ‘because’ /bɪˊkɒz/.

Cause /kɔːz/, because /bɪˊkɒz/.

In ‘because’ /bɪˊkɒz/ it’s short /ɒ/, but  in cause /kɔːz/ we have this long /ɔː/. 

ใน 'เพราะว่า' /bɪˊkɒz/ มันสั้น /ɒ/ แต่โดยสาเหตุ /kɔːz/ เรามี /ɔː/ ที่ยาวขนาดนี้

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/ because /bɪˊkɒz/ – cause /kɔːz/

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/ เพราะ /bɪˊkɒz/ – สาเหตุ /kɔːz/

A cause of confusion is has and was.

สาเหตุของความสับสนคือมีและเคยเป็น

They both have an ‘-as’, but ‘has’  is /..əz/ and ‘was’ is /..ɒz/

ทั้งคู่มี '-as' แต่ 'has' คือ /..əz/ และ 'was' คือ /..ɒz/

/..əz/ - /..ɒz/

/..əz/ - /..ɒz/

So confusing.

สับสนมาก

Next.

Though, thought and through...

แม้ว่า คิดและผ่าน...

Though /ðəʊ/, thought /θɔ:t / and through /θru:/

แม้ว่า /ðəʊ/ คิด /θɔ:t / และผ่าน /θru:/

they boggle the mind.

ก็ทำให้จิตใจสับสน

They look so similar but they're so different.

They both rhyme, tough – stuff.

I heard... 'Cause ‘heard’ /hɜ:d/  rhymes with ‘word’ /wɜ:d/.

I heard learning English is hard, so here's what  

ฉันได้ยินมาว่าการเรียนภาษาอังกฤษเป็นเรื่องยาก ดังนั้นนี่คือสิ่ง

to do. Prioritize pronunciation  and you will fly through /θru:/.
