British English Pronunciation Practice - "Inconsistent" Poem & Explanation

Today we're doing something  a little bit different.

Hoje estamos fazendo algo um pouco diferente.

We are delving into the world of poetry.

Estamos mergulhando no mundo da poesia.

Now I have a series of  pronunciation poems coming your way.

Agora eu tenho uma série de poemas de pronúncia vindo em sua direção.

And today I'm going to be breaking  down the poem “Inconsistent”.

E hoje vou destrinchar o poema “Inconsistente”.

So, let's hear the poem. First of all

Então, vamos ouvir o poema. Em primeiro lugar,

English pronunciation is quite tricky, it’s true,

a pronúncia do inglês é bastante complicada, é verdade,

As blue, and blew too, they rhyme with two.

como azul e soprado também, eles rimam com dois.

There’s little consistency between fear and bear,

Há pouca consistência entre medo e urso,

The latter rhyming with there, their, and they’re.

And that’s not the worst of it, consider the ‘o’,

Lacks consistency between dot, do and don’t.

What has not got an ‘o’, nor has because.

A cause of confusion is has and was.

Tough stuff our words, they are not well designed

Fork rhymes with walk, and bird with word,

Foot rhymes with put, not boot. I heard…

Ok, então vamos quebrar este poema para baixo.

Let's start!

English pronunciation is quite tricky, it's true...

A pronúncia em inglês é bastante complicada, é verdade...

And this is the first of our /u:/, sounds.

E este é o primeiro dos nossos /u:/, sons.

It's true. As blue and blew  too. They rhyme with two.

É verdade. Tão azul e soprou também. Eles rimam com dois.

So here we have a repeat of this long /u:/ vowel  in ‘true’, ‘blue’, ‘blew’, ‘too’ and ‘two’.

Então aqui temos uma repetição desta vogal longa /u:/ em 'true', 'blue', 'blew', 'too' e 'two'.

Now the word ‘rhyme’, ‘rhyme’  that has an unusual spelling.

Agora a palavra 'rima', 'rima' que tem uma grafia inusitada.

But the pronunciation is /raım/, /raım/, /raım/.

Mas a pronúncia é /raım/, /raım/, /raım/.

Okay?

There's little consistency (in  pronunciation) between fear and bear.

Now, hear that difference.

Agora, ouça essa diferença.

Fear /fıə/.

Medo /fıə/.

Bear /beə/.

Urso /beə/.

Fear, /ıə/, like your ear. 

Medo, /ıə/, como seu ouvido.

Bear /beə/, like chair /ʧeə/,  hair /heə/, where /weə/.

Urso /beə/, como cadeira /ʧeə/, cabelo /heə/, onde /weə/.

Like the air we breathe.

Como o ar que respiramos.

So, we have ‘ear’ and ‘air’,

Assim, temos 'orelha' e 'ar',

‘ear’ and ‘air’.

'orelha' e 'ar'.

Fear /fıə/. Bear /beə/.

Medo /fıə/. Urso /beə/.

Okay, so they are different even  though that spelling is the same.

Ok, então eles são diferentes, embora a grafia seja a mesma.

The latter, rhyming with there, their and they’re.

Este último, rimando com there, their e they're.

Okay, so the word ‘latter’ means  the last in the previous list.

Ok, então a palavra 'último' significa o último da lista anterior.

So, the last in the previous list was a list of  two ‘fear’ and ‘bear’ and the latter was ‘bear’.

Então, o último da lista anterior era uma lista de dois 'medo' e 'urso' e o último era 'urso'.

And it's saying the last one ‘bear’ rhymes  with ‘there’, ‘their’ and ‘they’re’.

E está dizendo que o último 'bear' rima com 'there', 'their' e 'they're'.

Three different words.

Três palavras diferentes.

And they all have the same sound.

E todos eles têm o mesmo som.

Exactly the same sound.

Exatamente o mesmo som.

The last one as well.

Pay close attention to contraction pronunciations  because many students don't like to pronounce  

Preste muita atenção às pronúncias das contrações porque muitos alunos não gostam de pronunciar

contractions in a different way to the  single words, many students would see  

as contrações de uma maneira diferente das palavras isoladas;

that word and say ‘they’re’ but try to pronounce  the contraction ‘they’re /ðeə/’, ‘they’re /ðeə/’.

/', 'eles são /ðeə/'.

Let's move on.

Vamos continuar.

And that's not the worst of it. Consider the ‘o’,

E isso não é o pior. Considere o 'o',

Lacks consistency between dot, do and don't.

So, look at these three words ‘dot’, ‘do’,‘don't’.

How are we pronouncing that ‘o’? In the first we have /ɒ/, in the second we  

Como estamos pronunciando esse 'o'? Na primeira temos /ɒ/, na segunda

have /uː/, in the third we have /əʊ/. /ɒ/, /uː/, /əʊ/

temos /uː/, na terceira temos /əʊ/. /ɒ/, /uː/, /əʊ/

/dɒ/, /duː/, /dəʊ/ dot /dɒt/, do /duː/, don't /dəʊnt/.

/dɒ/, /duː/, /dəʊ/ ponto /dɒt/, faça /duː/, não /dəʊnt/.

So, there is a lack in pronunciation  consistency then we go on to say

Então, falta consistência na pronúncia então a gente passa a dizer

What has not got an ‘o’ /ɒ/...

O que não tem 'o' /ɒ/...

but we still pronounce it like it has ‘o’ /ɒ/,

mas ainda pronunciamos como se tivesse 'o' /ɒ/,

/wɒ/, /wɒt/.

/wɒ/, /wɒt /.

But it has not got an ‘o’ in the way it's written.

Mas não tem um 'o' na forma como está escrito.

... nor has because.

... nem tem porque.

Because /bɪˊkɒz/.

Porque /bɪˊkɒz/.

Now here that -ause /ɒz/, /ɒ/, /ɒ/

Agora aqui que -ause /ɒz/, /ɒ/, /ɒ/

-cause /kɒz/, because /bɪˊkɒz/

-cause /kɒz/, porque /bɪˊkɒz/

So, ‘what’ and ‘because’  both have this ‘o’ /ɒ/ sound.

Então, 'o que' e 'porque' ambos têm esse som 'o' /ɒ/.

What has not got an o, nor has because. A cause of confusion is has an was.

O que não tem um o, nem tem porque. Uma causa de confusão é tem um era.

Did you hear the difference between  how I pronounce ‘cause’ /kɔːz/ when  

Você ouviu a diferença entre como eu pronuncio 'cause' /kɔːz/ quando

it's on its own as opposed to when  it's in the word ‘because’ /bɪˊkɒz/.

está sozinho e quando está na palavra 'porque' /bɪˊkɒz/.

Cause /kɔːz/, because /bɪˊkɒz/.

Porque /kɔːz/, porque /bɪˊkɒz/.

Cause /kɔːz/, because /bɪˊkɒz/.

Porque /kɔːz/, porque /bɪˊkɒz/.

In ‘because’ /bɪˊkɒz/ it’s short /ɒ/, but  in cause /kɔːz/ we have this long /ɔː/. 

Em 'porque' /bɪˊkɒz/ é /ɒ/ curto, mas em causa /kɔːz/ temos este /ɔː/ longo.

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/ because /bɪˊkɒz/ – cause /kɔːz/

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/ porque /bɪˊkɒz/ – causa /kɔːz/

A cause of confusion is has and was.

Uma causa de confusão é tem e foi.

They both have an ‘-as’, but ‘has’  is /..əz/ and ‘was’ is /..ɒz/

Ambos têm um '-as', mas 'has' é /..əz/ e 'was' é /..ɒz/

/..əz/ - /..ɒz/

So confusing.

Tão confuso.

Though, thought and through...

they boggle the mind.

They look so similar but they're so different.

Tough stuff...

They both rhyme, tough – stuff.
