British English Pronunciation Practice - "Inconsistent" Poem & Explanation

Today we're doing something  a little bit different.

Ngayon ay may ginagawa kaming medyo kakaiba.

We are delving into the world of poetry.

Nakikisawsaw tayo sa mundo ng tula.

Now I have a series of  pronunciation poems coming your way.

Ngayon ay mayroon akong isang serye ng mga tula sa pagbigkas na darating sa iyo.

And today I'm going to be breaking  down the poem “Inconsistent”.

At ngayong araw na ito ay sisirain ko ang tulang “Hindi naaayon”.

So, let's hear the poem. First of all

Kaya, pakinggan natin ang tula. Una sa lahat

English pronunciation is quite tricky, it’s true,

Ingles pagbigkas ay medyo nakakalito, ito ay totoo,

As blue, and blew too, they rhyme with two.

Bilang asul, at blew masyadong, sila ay tumutula sa dalawa.

There’s little consistency between fear and bear,

May maliit na pagkakapare-pareho sa pagitan ng takot at oso,

The latter rhyming with there, their, and they’re.

Ang huli ay tumutula doon, kanilang, at sila ay.

And that’s not the worst of it, consider the ‘o’,

At hindi iyon ang pinakamasama nito, isaalang-alang ang 'o',

Lacks consistency between dot, do and don’t.

Walang pagkakapare-pareho sa pagitan ng tuldok, gawin at huwag.

What has not got an ‘o’, nor has because.

Ano ang hindi nakakuha ng 'o', at hindi rin dahil.

A cause of confusion is has and was.

Ang isang sanhi ng pagkalito ay mayroon at noon.

Though, thought and through boggle the mind.

Bagaman, ang pag-iisip at sa pamamagitan ng magulo ang isip.

English pronunciation is quite tricky, it's true...

Ang pagbigkas sa Ingles ay medyo nakakalito, ito ay totoo...

And this is the first of our /u:/, sounds.

At ito ang una sa aming /u:/, mga tunog.

It's true. As blue and blew  too. They rhyme with two.

Totoo iyon. As blue and blew din. Nag-rhyme silang dalawa.

So here we have a repeat of this long /u:/ vowel  in ‘true’, ‘blue’, ‘blew’, ‘too’ and ‘two’.

Kaya't narito ang pag-uulit ng mahabang /u:/ patinig na ito sa 'true', 'blue', 'blew', 'too' at 'two'.

Now the word ‘rhyme’, ‘rhyme’  that has an unusual spelling.

Ngayon ang salitang 'rhyme', 'rhyme' na may kakaibang spelling.

But the pronunciation is /raım/, /raım/, /raım/.

Ngunit ang bigkas ay /raım/, /raım/, /raım/.

Okay?

There's little consistency (in  pronunciation) between fear and bear.

Mayroong maliit na pagkakapare-pareho (sa pagbigkas) sa pagitan ng takot at oso.

Now, hear that difference.

Ngayon, pakinggan ang pagkakaiba.

Fear /fıə/.

Takot /fıə/.

Bear /beə/.

Oso /beə/.

Fear, /ıə/, like your ear. 

Takot, /ıə/, tulad ng iyong tainga.

Bear /beə/, like chair /ʧeə/,  hair /heə/, where /weə/.

Oso /beə/, parang upuan /ʧeə/, buhok /heə/, kung saan /weə/.

Like the air we breathe.

Tulad ng hangin na ating nilalanghap.

So, we have ‘ear’ and ‘air’,

Kaya, mayroon tayong 'tainga' at 'hangin',

‘ear’ and ‘air’.

'tainga' at 'hangin'.

Fear /fıə/. Bear /beə/.

Takot /fıə/. Oso /beə/.

Okay, so they are different even  though that spelling is the same.

Okay, so magkaiba sila kahit pareho ang spelling na iyon.

The latter, rhyming with there, their and they’re.

Ang huli, tumutula doon, sila at sila.

Okay, so the word ‘latter’ means  the last in the previous list.

Okay, ang ibig sabihin ng salitang 'latter' ay ang huli sa nakaraang listahan.

So, the last in the previous list was a list of  two ‘fear’ and ‘bear’ and the latter was ‘bear’.

Kaya, ang huli sa nakaraang listahan ay isang listahan ng dalawang 'fear' at 'bear' at ang huli ay 'bear'.

And it's saying the last one ‘bear’ rhymes  with ‘there’, ‘their’ and ‘they’re’.

At sinasabi nitong ang huling 'bear' ay tumutula sa 'doon', 'kanila' at 'sila'.

Three different words.

Tatlong magkaibang salita.

And they all have the same sound.

At lahat sila ay may parehong tunog.

Exactly the same sound.

Eksaktong parehong tunog.

The last one as well.

Yung huli din.

Pay close attention to contraction pronunciations  because many students don't like to pronounce  

Bigyang-pansin ang mga pagbigkas ng contraction dahil maraming estudyante ang hindi gustong bigkasin ang

contractions in a different way to the  single words, many students would see  

contraction sa ibang paraan sa mga solong salita, maraming estudyante ang makakakita

that word and say ‘they’re’ but try to pronounce  the contraction ‘they’re /ðeə/’, ‘they’re /ðeə/’.

sa salitang iyon at magsasabi ng 'sila' ngunit subukang bigkasin ang contraction na 'sila /ðeə /', 'sila ay /ðeə/'.

Let's move on.

Mag-move on na tayo.

And that's not the worst of it. Consider the ‘o’,

At hindi iyon ang pinakamasama. Isaalang-alang ang 'o',

Lacks consistency between dot, do and don't.

Walang pagkakapare-pareho sa pagitan ng tuldok, gawin at huwag.

So, look at these three words ‘dot’, ‘do’,‘don't’.

Kaya, tingnan ang tatlong salitang ito na 'tuldok', 'gawin', 'huwag'.

How are we pronouncing that ‘o’? In the first we have /ɒ/, in the second we  

Paano natin binibigkas ang 'o' na iyon? Sa una ay mayroon tayong /ɒ/, sa pangalawa ay

have /uː/, in the third we have /əʊ/. /ɒ/, /uː/, /əʊ/

mayroon tayong /uː/, sa pangatlo ay mayroon tayong /əʊ/. /ɒ/, /uː/, /əʊ/

/dɒ/, /duː/, /dəʊ/ dot /dɒt/, do /duː/, don't /dəʊnt/.

/dɒ/, /duː/, /dəʊ/ tuldok /dɒt/, gawin /duː/, huwag /dəʊnt/.

So, there is a lack in pronunciation  consistency then we go on to say

Kaya, may kakulangan sa pagkakapare-pareho ng pagbigkas pagkatapos ay sasabihin namin

What has not got an ‘o’ /ɒ/...

ang What has not got an 'o' /ɒ/...

but we still pronounce it like it has ‘o’ /ɒ/,

pero binibigkas pa rin namin ito na parang may 'o' /ɒ/,

/wɒ/, /wɒt/.

/wɒ/, /wɒt /.

But it has not got an ‘o’ in the way it's written.

Ngunit wala itong 'o' sa paraan ng pagkakasulat.

... nor has because.

... hindi rin dahil.

Because /bɪˊkɒz/.

Dahil /bɪˊkɒz/.

Now here that -ause /ɒz/, /ɒ/, /ɒ/

Ngayon narito na -ause /ɒz/, /ɒ/, /ɒ/

-cause /kɒz/, because /bɪˊkɒz/

-cause /kɒz/, dahil /bɪˊkɒz/

So, ‘what’ and ‘because’  both have this ‘o’ /ɒ/ sound.

Kaya, 'ano' at 'dahil' parehong may ganitong 'o' /ɒ/ tunog.

What has not got an o, nor has because. A cause of confusion is has an was.

Ano ang hindi nakakuha ng o, o mayroon ding dahil. Ang sanhi ng kalituhan ay may was.

Did you hear the difference between  how I pronounce ‘cause’ /kɔːz/ when  

Narinig mo ba ang pagkakaiba sa pagitan ng kung paano ko bigkasin ang 'sanhi' /kɔːz/ kapag

it's on its own as opposed to when  it's in the word ‘because’ /bɪˊkɒz/.

ito ay nag-iisa kumpara sa kapag ito ay nasa salitang 'dahil' /bɪˊkɒz/.

Cause /kɔːz/, because /bɪˊkɒz/.

Sanhi /kɔːz/, dahil /bɪˊkɒz/.

Cause /kɔːz/, because /bɪˊkɒz/.

Sanhi /kɔːz/, dahil /bɪˊkɒz/.

In ‘because’ /bɪˊkɒz/ it’s short /ɒ/, but  in cause /kɔːz/ we have this long /ɔː/. 

Sa 'dahil' /bɪˊkɒz/ ito ay maikli /ɒ/, ngunit sa kadahilanang /kɔːz/ mayroon tayong ganito kahaba /ɔː/.

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/ because /bɪˊkɒz/ – cause /kɔːz/

/ɒ/ - /ɔː/ dahil /bɪˊkɒz/ – sanhi /kɔːz/

A cause of confusion is has and was.

They both have an ‘-as’, but ‘has’  is /..əz/ and ‘was’ is /..ɒz/

Pareho silang may '-as', ngunit ang 'has' ay /..əz/ at 'was' ay /..ɒz/

So confusing.

Kaya nakakalito.

Matigas na bagay ang ating mga salita, hindi sila mahusay na dinisenyo.

Fork rhymes with walk, bird with word Foot /fʊt/ rhymes with put /pʊt/, not boot /bu:t/.

Fork rhymes na may lakad, ibon na may salitang Paa /fʊt/ rhymes na may put /pʊt/, hindi boot /bu:t/.

Ang paa /fʊt/ ay tumutula na may put /pʊt/, hindi boot /bu:t/.

I heard... 'Cause ‘heard’ /hɜ:d/  rhymes with ‘word’ /wɜ:d/.

Narinig ko... 'Cause 'heard' /hɜ:d/ rhymes with 'word' /wɜ:d/.

I heard learning English is hard, so here's what  

Narinig kong mahirap mag-aral ng English, kaya narito ang dapat

to do. Prioritize pronunciation  and you will fly through /θru:/.
