But to the disappointment of readers over the centuries,

He and his friends break into an orchard

What stunned Augustine and disturbed him

was that he seemed to be motivated by a desire just to do wrong.

Sometimes it's self destructive.

Now psychologists have long been interested

in these sort of violent, disruptive, perverse acts

and the kinds of people who do them.

An example people often give is the Joker from the “Batman” comics.

In Christopher Nolan's film "The Dark Knight,"

Someone else wrote me, and this is kind of the sweetest, saddest

little example of modest perversity:

just because I know it's wrong."

Now a lot of perversity makes the world worse.

I wouldn't want an Uber driver

who scores high on a "need for chaos" scale.

And I don't want a friend or a colleague either.

But sometimes, I'll suggest to you,

perversity can be clever, creative, beautiful.

And there are some examples from art.

There was an illustrious art exhibition in New York City in 1917, and they said,

In the right hands, perversity is such a source of joy.

Perversity can also be powerful.

He gave two reasons why this is so.

But, if as somebody is hinting here, you’re a perverse agent,

But like I said, I'm a psychologist, I don't believe in imps.

I think what we do has reasons, has motivations.

And I think for perverse actions there is a range of them.

One of them was mentioned by Augustine.

The social force drove him.

One force that really interests me

And Jonah Berger gives a nice example of this.

He talks about the Tide Pod challenge of a few years ago,

were incredibly unhappy about this

and they set up an extremely expensive ad campaign

designed to stop people from consuming these products.

And one of their campaigns involved a ... popular football player

လှုံ့ဆော်ပွဲ တစ်ခုမှာ ပါဝင်ခဲ့တာက Gronk လို့ သိကြတဲ့

known as Gronk.

လူကြိုက်များတဲ့ ဘောလုံးကစားသမားပါ။

So the ad would begin,

ဒီတော့ ကြော်ငြာက စတာက

"Hey, Gronk, is eating the pods ever a good idea?"

"ဟေ့၊ Gronk အတောင့်တွေကို စားနေတာက စိတ်ကူးကောင်းလား။"

And Gronk responds, "No, no, no."

Gronk က "မဟုတ်ဘူး၊ မဟုတ်ဘူး" လို့ပြန်ဖြေတယ်။

Berger points out, when this ad came up,

ဒီကြော်ငြာပေါ်လာတဲ့အခါ အိုးတွေ စားသုံးမှု

consumption of the pots shot up.

တိုးလာတယ်လို့ Berger က ထောက်ပြတယ်။

Not down.

"Nobody's going to tell me what to do.

Who is this Gronk telling me what to do?

Gronk က ဘာလုပ်ဖို့ ဘယ်သူ့ကို ပြောနေလဲ။

I want to be an autonomous, free being."

ကျွန်တော် လွတ်လပ်တဲ့သူ ဖြစ်ချင်တယ်။"

And psychologists call this reactance.

စိတ်ပညာရှင်တွေက ဒါကို တန်ပြန်မှုလို့ ခေါ်တယ်။

This means it's "an unpleasant feeling

" လူတွေဟာ သူတို့ရဲ့ လွတ်လပ်တဲ့ အပြုအမူတွေကို

that emerges when people experience a threat to

or loss of their free behaviors."

And there's a wealth of laboratory studies looking at reactance.

So they test the idea

And so one of the studies, for instance, looks at binge-drinking ads

and finds that when binge drinking ads are particularly heavy-handed,

people often respond by drinking more. ...

"I'm going to reestablish my freedom."

"ငါ လုပ်ချင်တာ လုပ်တော့မယ်။"ဆိုပြီး

"I'm going to do what I want."

လူတွေက ပိုသောက်ပြီး တုံ့ပြန်လေ့ရှိတာပါ။

Or take threats of reprisal.

လက်တုံ့ပြန်မှုရဲ့ ခြိမ်းခြောက်မှုတွေကို ကြည့်ပါ။

There's a lovely study by a team of political scientists

နိုင်ငံရေး သိပ္ပံ ပညာရှင်တစ်ဖွဲ့က အစမ်းသပ်ခံတွေကို

which asked you, asked the subjects,

သူတို့ဟာ နိုင်ငံရဲ့ သံအမတ်ဖြစ်ပြီး

to imagine that they’re an ambassador to a country

ဒီနိုင်ငံအပေါ် ပိတ်ပင်တာတွေ ရှိ၊မရှိဆိုတာကို

and they're deciding whether or not to have sanctions

ဆုံးဖြတ်နေကြတယ်လို့

towards that country.

စိတ်ကူးကြည့်ခိုင်းတယ်။၊

In one condition, the dictator says

ပထမ အခြေအနေမှာ အာဏာရှင် ပြောတာက

"If you do sanctions towards our country, that's OK, I won't do anything."

"ကျုပ်တို့နိုင်ငံကို ပိတ်ပင်မှုတွေ လုပ်ရင်၊ ရတယ်၊ ကျုပ် ဘာမှမလုပ်ဘူး"တဲ့။

In the second condition, the dictator says,

ဒုတိယ အခြေအနေမှာ အာဏာရှင် ပြောတာက

"If you do sanctions towards our country,

"နိုင်ငံကို ပိတ်ပင်မှုတွေ လုပ်ရင်၊

I will unleash terrorist attacks against you."

ခင်ဗျားတို့ကို ဆန့်ကျင်တဲ့ အကြမ်းဖက် တိုက်ခိုက်မှုတွေကို လွှတ်ပေးမယ်"တဲ့။

What's the stunning finding from this is that in the second condition,

ဒါကနေ အံ့သြစရာ တွေ့ရှိမှုက ပထမ အခြေအနေမှာမဟုတ်ဘဲ၊

not the first,

ဒုတိယ အခြေအနေမှာပါ၊

they were more likely to do it.

ဒါကို လုပ်ဖို့ ဖြစ်နိုင်ခြေပိုများတာပါ။

A lot of our perverse actions are in response to people

အရွဲ့တိုက်တဲ့ လုပ်ရပ်များစွာက ကိုယ် လုပ်ချင်တာတွေ မလုပ်ဖို့

telling us not to do what we want to do,

ပြောနေတဲ့သူတွေကို တုံ့ပြန်တာပါ။

and it makes us want all the more to do that thing.

ဒါက ကျွန်တော်တို့ကို ပိုလုပ်လာချင်စေတာပါ။

I think there are two lessons from the study of perversity.

အရွဲ့တိုက်မှု လေ့လာမှုကနေ သင်ခန်းစာ နှစ်ခုရှိတယ်လို့ ကျွန်တော် ထင်တယ်

One is to appreciate its role in everyday life.

တစ်ခုကတော့ နေ့စဉ်ဘဝမှာ ဒါရဲ့အခန်းကဏ္ဍကို တန်ဖိုးထားဖို့ပါ။

It's really worth knowing that there are people out there

ကမ္ဘာကြီး မီးလောင်တာကို တကယ် ကြည့်ချင်တဲ့

who really do want to watch the world burn.

လူတွေရှိတာကို သိရကျိုးနပ်ပါတယ်။

And I think it's also worth knowing that each and every one of us,

သိရကျိုးနပ်သေးတာက ကျွန်တော်တို့ တစ်ယောက် စီဟာ ဘဝရဲ့ တစ်ချိန်ချိန်မှာ

at some point in our life,

အနည်းဆုံး ကမ္ဘာကြီး

wants to watch the world burn at least a little bit.

နည်းနည်းလေး မီးလောင်တာကို ကြည့်ချင်ကြတာလို့ ထင်တယ်။

I think it's worth knowing,

အနည်းဆုံး ဘယ်သူ့ကို မဲပေးရမလဲ ရွေးတာလို

at least for consequential decisions like choosing who to vote for,

လက်ငင်းအကျိုးဖြစ်တဲ့ ဆုံးဖြတ်ချက်တွေအတွက်၊ လူတွေဟာ ရုပ်ပိုင်း ကိုယ်ကျိုးကြည့်မှု၊

that people aren't just motivated by material self-interest

ဒါမှမဟုတ် လူမှုရေးနဲ့ နိုင်ငံရေးအုပ်စုနဲ့ ဆက်နွယ်မှုတွေကြောင့်

or by an affiliation to social and political group.

လှုံ့ဆော်ခံရတာမဟုတ်တာကို သိရကျိုးနပ်တယ်လို့ ထင်တယ်။

Sometimes people want to be autonomous beings,

တစ်ခါတစ်ရံ လူတွေက အမှီအခိုကင်းတဲ့ သတ္တဝါတွေဖြစ်ချင်ပြီး

they want to be free.

လွတ်လပ်ချင်ကြတယ်။

And telling these people, "What you're doing is stupid,"

"ခင်ဗျား လုပ်နေတာက မိုက်မဲတယ်”၊ "ခင်ဗျား လုပ်နေတာက ယုတ္တိမရှိဘူး"၊

"what you're doing is irrational,"

"ခင်ဗျား လုပ်နေတာက အကျင့်ပျက်တာ" ဆိုပြီး

"what you're doing is immoral,"

ဒီလူတွေကို ပြောတာက

can have the paradoxical effect of motivating them to do

သူတို့ကို မလုပ်စေချင်တာကို အတိအကျ လုပ်ဖို့ သူတို့ကို

exactly what you don't want them to do.

လှုံ့ဆော်ပေးတာရဲ့ ဝိရောဓိ သက်ရောက်မှု ရှိစေနိုင်တယ်။

The second lesson of perversity has to do with our everyday lives.

အရွဲ့တိုက်မှုရဲ့ ဒုတိယ သင်ခန်းစာက ကျွန်တော်တို့ရဲ့ နေ့စဉ် ဘဝတွေနဲ့ ဆိုင်တယ်။

အရွဲ့တိုက်မှုများစွာက ဆိုးရွားပါတယ်။

A lot of perversity is awful.

I think the world would be better off without it.

ဒါမရှိရင်၊ ကမ္ဘာကြီးက ပိုကောင်းလာမယ်လို့ ထင်တယ်။

But I think we've seen a little bit that perversity could be funny.

ဒါပေမဲ့ အရွဲ့တိုက်မှုက ရယ်စရာ ဖြစ်နိုင်တယ် လို့ နည်းနည်း မြင်ကြတယ်လို့ ထင်တယ်။

It could be clever.

ဒါက ပါးနပ်နိုင်တယ်။

I think it can make the world a better place.

ဒါက ကမ္ဘာကြီးကို ပိုကောင်းတဲ့နေရာ ဖြစ်စေနိုင်တယ်လို့ ထင်တယ်။

And so I guess I'd suggest

ဒီတော့ အရွဲ့တိုက်မှု နည်းလေးပါတဲ့

that a life with a little bit of perversity in it,

ဘဝတစ်ခုကို ကျွန်တော် ညွှန်းရမယ် ထင်တယ်၊

a life where sometimes you put your finger into your friend's ice cream,

တစ်ခါတလေ သူငယ်ချင်းရဲ့ ရေခဲမုန့်ကို လက်နဲ့ထိုးလိုက်တဲ့ ဘဝတစ်ခုက

is a life that's a lot more interesting.

ပိုပြီး စိတ်ဝင်စားစရာကောင်းတဲ့ ဘဝတစ်ခုပါ။
