Of course, I knew it was clear

In America, religious extremism

And even when religion-related extremism does not lead to violence,

We need to call this what it is:

But the thing is, this isn't even the only challenge that religion faces today.

that we need religion to be a strong force against extremism,

Well, religious ritual and rites

were essentially designed to serve the function of the anniversary,

to be a container in which we would hold on to the remnants

of that sacred, revelatory encounter

The problem is that after a few centuries,

the date remains on the calendar,

That's when we find ourselves in endless, mindless repetitions

Religion is waning in the United States.

Across the board, churches and synagogues and mosques

are all complaining

about how hard it is to maintain relevance

for a generation of young people who seem completely uninterested,

And what they need to understand

is that there is today a generation of people

Of course there is a bright spot to this story.

Given the crisis of these two concurrent trends in religious life,

about 12 or 13 years ago, I set out to try to determine

Now, we had no money, no space, no game plan,

but we did have email.

So my friend Melissa and I sat down and we wrote an email

We hoped maybe 20 people would show up.

It turned out 135 people came.

They were cynics and seekers,

atheists and rabbis.

Many people said that night that it was the first time

And so I set out to do the only rational thing

I'm going to share with you four of those commitments now.

The first is wakefulness.

we are called to a certain kind of action.

So too we learn that our world is on fire,

This is extremely difficult to do.

Psychologists tell us that the more we learn about what's broken in our world,

The second principle is hope,

Because what hope does for us

I saw hope made manifest in an African-American church

하늘을 향해 손을 올린 채 일어납니다.

and we say, "I am strong, I am mighty, and I am worthy.

그리고 이렇게 말합니다. "나는 강하고, 위대하고, 훌륭하다.

나는 모든 것을 할 수는 없지만, 무엇인가 해낼 수 있다."

I can't do everything, but I can do something."

In a world that conspires to make us believe that we are invisible

우리가 보이지 않는 존재라고 믿게끔하고

and that we are impotent,

우리가 무기력하다고 느끼게 만드는 세상에서

religious communities and religious ritual

종교적 공동체와 종교 의식이

can remind us that for whatever amount of time we have here on this Earth,

우리가 지상에 머무를 수 있는 시간이 얼마가 남았든

whatever gifts and blessings we were given,

얼마나 많은 축복과 선물이 우리에게 주어졌든

얼마나 많은 자원들을 가졌든

whatever resources we have,

we can and we must use them

우리는 할 수 있고, 그 자원들을 이용해야 한다고 말입니다.

to try to make the world a little bit more just

이 세상을 조금이나마 더 정의롭고,

and a little bit more loving.

조금 더 사랑스럽게 만들기 위해서요.

The fourth and final is interconnectedness.

네 번째이자 마지막은 상호연결입니다.

A few years ago, there was a man walking on the beach in Alaska,

몇 년 전, 어떤 남자가 알래스카의 한 해변을 걷고 있었습니다.

축구공이 그에게 날아왔고

when he came across a soccer ball

거기엔 일본어가 적혀 있었습니다.

that had some Japanese letters written on it.

He took a picture of it and posted it up on social media,

그는 사진을 찍어, 소셜 미디어에 포스팅을 했습니다.

그리고 한 일본인 십 대가 그에게 연락했습니다.

and a Japanese teenager contacted him.

He had lost everything in the tsunami that devastated his country,

그는 고국을 비탄에 빠뜨린 쓰나미로 인해 모든 것을 잃어버렸습니다.

but he was able to retrieve that soccer ball

하지만 그 축구공을 다시 찾을 수 있었습니다.

after it had floated all the way across the Pacific.

그 축구공이 태평양을 건너서 흘러 간 후에서나요.

How small our world has become.

우리 세상이 얼마나 좁아졌습니까.

우리 모두 얼마나 서로 연결되었는 지를 기억하기조차 어렵습니다.

It's so hard for us to remember how interconnected we all are

as human beings.

인류로서요.

And yet, we know

그리고 우리는 알고 있습니다.

that it is systems of oppression

억압의 제도들이

that benefit the most from the lie of radical individualism.

급진적 개인주의의 거짓말을 하는 대부분에게 혜택을 준다는 것을요.

Let me tell you how this works.

이것이 어떻게 작용하는지 말씀드릴게요.

I'm not supposed to care

저는 상관할 필요가 없어요.

when black youth are harassed by police,

흑인 청년들이 경찰들에게 괴롭힘을 당해도요.

because my white-looking Jewish kids

왜냐하면 백인처럼 보이는 제 유대인 아이들은

아마 운전중에 범죄때문에 길 옆에 차를 세우는 일은 없을 테니까요.

probably won't ever get pulled over for the crime of driving while black.

하지만, 그렇지 않아요, 이것은 또한 저의 문제이니까요.

Well, not so, because this is also my problem.

그리고 있잖아요, 트랜스 공포증과 이슬람 공포증

And guess what? Transphobia and Islamophobia

and racism of all forms, those are also all of our problems.

그리고 온갖 종류의 인종차별들, 이것들은 우리 모두의 문제입니다.

And so too is anti-Semitism all of our problems.

그리고 반유태주의 또한 우리의 문제입니다.

Because Emma Lazarus was right.

왜냐하면, 엠마 라자러스는 옳았기 때문입니다.

Emma Lazarus was right when she said until all of us are free,

we are none of us free.

We are all in this together.

우리는 이런 점에서 모두 하나입니다.

And now somewhere at the intersection of these four trends,

그리고 이 네 개의 트렌드가 교차하는 어느 한 지점

of wakefulness and hope and mightiness and interconnectedness,

각성, 희망, 위대함과 상호연결이 만나는 어느 지점에

급성장하는 다종교적인 정의의 움직임이 이 나라에 있습니다.

there is a burgeoning, multifaith justice movement in this country

that is staking a claim on a countertrend,

반대쪽에서 이렇게 주장하는 거죠.

saying that religion can and must be a force for good in the world.

종교는 이 세상에서 선을 위한 힘이 될 수 있고 되어야만 한다고 말입니다.

우리의 가슴은 종교의 극단주의의 실패로부터 상처입습니다.

Our hearts hurt from the failed religion of extremism,

우리는 마땅히 실패한 종교의 관례주의 이상을 요구해야 합니다.

and we deserve more than the failed religion of routine-ism.

It is time for religious leaders and religious communities

이제는 종교 지도자들과 종교 공동체들이

나서서 영적인, 문화적인 변화를 이끌어나가야 합니다.

to take the lead in the spiritual and cultural shift

that this country and the world so desperately needs --

이는 이 나라와 이 세계가 간절히 필요로 하는 바입니다.

a shift toward love,

사랑으로의 전환

toward justice, toward equality and toward dignity for all.

정의, 평등, 그리고 모든 이들의 존엄으로의 전환으로요.

I believe that our children deserve no less than that.

저는 제 아이들이 그 이상을 받을 자격이 있다고 생각합니다.
