Well, at least I was.

적어도 예전엔 그랬습니다.

At one time, I had two or three packages of clothing delivered to me

옷 상자 두세 개가 한번에 배달되곤 했죠.

every other day.

이틀에 한번 꼴로요.

I would intentionally buy the same item

저는 한가지 물품을 살 때는

in a couple different sizes and many colors,

일부러 여러 치수와 여러 색상으로 주문했습니다.

because I did not know what I really wanted.

마음에 드는 게 어떤 건지 모르니까요.

So I overordered, I tried things on, and then I sent what didn't work back.

그래서 많이 주문하고 입어본 뒤에 맘에 안 드는 건 반품했죠.

Once my daughter was watching me return some of those packages back,

한번은 제 딸이 제가 그 꾸러미들 중 일부를 돌려보내는 것을 지켜보고는

and she said, "Mom, I think you have a problem."

이렇게 말하더군요. "엄마, 뭔가 문제 있는 거 같아."

(Laughter)

I didn't think so.

전혀 그렇지 않아요.

I mean, it's free shipping and free returns, right?

무료 배송이고 무료 반품이잖아요, 그렇죠?

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I didn't even think twice about it,

저는 그게 당연하다고 생각했습니다.

until I heard a statistic at work that shocked me.

실제 통계치를 알고 충격을 받기 전까지는 그랬죠.

You see, I'm a global solutions director for top-tier retail,

저는 손꼽히는 소매 기업 대상의 총괄대책 책임자로 있는데요.

and we were in a meeting with one of my largest customers,

저희 가장 큰 고객 중 한 업체와 회의를 한 적이 있습니다.

discussing how to streamline costs.

비용을 합리화하는 방법을 의논하고 있었죠.

One of their biggest concerns was managing returns.

그들의 가장 큰 걱정거리 중 하나가 반품 관리였습니다.

Just this past holiday season alone,

이 지난번 휴가철만 보더라도

they had 7.5 million pieces of clothing returned to them.

750만 점의 의류가 반품되었습니다.

I could not stop thinking about it.

저는 거기에 대한 생각을 멈출 수가 없었어요.

What happens to all these returned clothes?

그 모든 반품 의류는 어떻게 되는 걸까요?

So I came home and researched.

그래서 집에 와서 조사해 보았지요.

And I learned that every year,

four billion pounds of returned clothing ends up in the landfill.

That's like every resident in the US did a load of laundry last night

그것은 마치 미국인 전체가 지난밤에 한 짐의 빨래를 했는데

and decided to throw it in the trash today.

오늘 쓰레기로 버리겠다고 결정해버린 것과 비슷합니다.

I was horrified.

저는 충격을 받았습니다.

I'm like, "Of all people,

이런 생각이 들었죠.

"그 누구보다 내가 이것을 막는 데 도움을 줄 수 있어야 해."

I should be able to help prevent this."

(Laughter)

My job is to find solutions to logistical issues like these --

제 직업이 이와 같은 물류 문제의 해결책을 찾는 것인데도

not create them.

그런 문제를 만들면 안 되잖아요.

So this issue became very personal to me.

그래서 이 문제는 저에게 매우 개인적인 문제가 되었습니다.

저는 말했습니다. "있잖아요? 우리가 이것을 해결해야 합니다."

I said, "You know what? We have to solve this."

And we can, with some of the existing systems we already have in place.

그리고 우리는 이미 가동 중인 몇 가지 현재 시스템으로 할 수 있습니다.

And then I started to wonder: How did we get here?

I mean, it was only like six years ago when a study recommended

that offering free online returns would drive customers to spend more.

We started seeing companies offering free online returns

to drive more sales and provide a better experience.

판매가 늘어나고, 더 나은 제품 경험을 제공한다는 걸 알 수 있었습니다.

What we didn't realize

우리가 깨닫지 못했던 것은

is that this would lead to more items being returned as well.

그러면 반품되는 양도 늘어나게 된다는 사실이었죠.

미국에서만 해도, 기업들은 3500억 달러의 판매 손실을 봅니다.

In the US, companies lost $351 billion in sales

in 2017 alone.

2017년 한 해에만 말이죠.

Retailers are scrambling to recover their losses.

소매 매장은 그 손실을 만회하려고 부단히 애쓰고 있습니다.

They try to place that returned item online to be sold again,

그들은 온라인 반품된 것을 진열해서 다시 팔려고 하거나

or they'll sell it to a discount partner

할인판매 협력 업체에게 넘기려 할 겁니다.

or a liquidator.

아니면 매장정리 업자에게 넘기죠.

Basically, if companies cannot find a place for this item

기본적으로, 회사가 이 물품을 처리할 방법을 찾을 수 없다면

quickly and economically,

빠르고 경제적인 방법이 없다면

its place becomes the trash.

그것이 갈 곳은 쓰레기장뿐입니다.

Suddenly, I felt very guilty for being that shopper,

갑자기 제가 그런 소비자였다는 것에 큰 죄책감이 느껴졌습니다.

somebody who contributes to this.

그런 문제에 일조했다는 사실에요.

Who would have thought my innocent shopping behavior

생각이나 했을까요.

저의 순진한 쇼핑 행위가 자신에게 손해가 되고

would be hurting not only me,

but our planet as well?

우리 지구에도 피해를 준다는 걸요.

And as I thought about what to do,

그리고 무엇을 할까에 대해 생각하면서

I kept thinking:

계속 이런 생각이 들었습니다.

Why does the item have to be returned to the retailer in the first place?

왜 그 반품된 물품이 우선 소매업자에게 돌아가야 하지?

What if there was another way,

다른 방법이 있지는 않을까?

a win-win for everyone?

모두에게 득이 되는 방법은 없을까?

What if when a person is trying to return something,

만약 누군가 반품하려고 할 때

it could go to the next shopper who wants it,

소매업자가 아니라 그 물품을 원하는 다른 구매자에게 갈 수 있으면 어떨까?

and not the retailer?

What if, instead of a return,

만약 "반품"이라는 용어 대신에

they could do what I call a "green turn"?

제가 표현하는 식으로 '친환경 순환'으로 부르면 어떨까?

Consumers could use an app to take pictures of the item

소비자가 앱을 사용하여 그 물품의 사진을 찍고

and verify the condition while returning it.

그 물품이 반품될 때의 상태를 확인해줄 수 있겠죠.

Artificial intelligence systems could then sort these clothes by condition --

그러면 인공지능 시스템이 옷의 상태에 따라 분류합니다.

mint condition or slightly used --

양호한 상태 또는 약간 중고로 분류해서

and direct it to the next appropriate person.

다음 적절한 사람에게 가게 할 수 있습니다.

Mint-condition clothes could automatically go to the next buyer,

양호한 상태의 옷은 자동으로 다음 구매자에게 보내지고

while slightly used clothes could be marked down

약간 중고인 옷은 살짝 가격 인하되어

and offered online again.

다시 온라인에서 판매될 수 있죠.

The retailer can decide the business rules

소매업자는 사업 규정을 정할 수 있습니다.

on the number of times a particular item can be resold.

특정한 물품의 재판매 가능한 횟수를 정해두는 거죠.

All that the consumer would need to do is obtain a mobile code,

소비자가 해야 할 일은 모바일 코드를 받고

take it to the nearest shipping place to be packed and shipped,

그 물품을 근처 배송지에 가져가서 포장하고 배송하는 것입니다.

and off it goes from one buyer to the next,

그러면 그 물품은 한 구매자로부터 다음 구매자에게로 출발합니다.

not the landfill.

매립지가 아니라요.

Now you will ask,

그러면 여러분은 이렇게 물을 거예요.

"Would people really go through all this trouble?"

"사람들이 정말 이 모든 수고를 하려고 할까요?"

I think they would if they had incentives,

보상이 주어지면 할 거라고 생각합니다.

like loyalty points or cash back.

회원 혜택 포인트나 현금으로 돌려 받는다면 말이죠.

Let's call it "green cash."

그걸 '친환경 현금'이라고 부르면 어떨까요.

There would be a whole new opportunity to make money

돈을 벌 완전히 새로운 기회가 생길 것입니다.

from this new customer base looking to buy these returns.

반품된 물건을 구매하려는 이 새로운 고객층으로부터 말이죠.

This system would make a fun thing like shopping

이 시스템은 쇼핑의 즐거움을 정신적 경험으로 만들 것입니다.

a spiritual experience

that helps save our planet.

우리 지구를 살린다는 정신적 경험이죠.

This is doable

이것은 실행될 수 있습니다.

and would probably take six months to weave some of our existing systems

아마 6개월 정도면

and run a pilot.

Even before any of these logistical systems are in place,

each of us shoppers can act now,

if every single adult in the US made a few small changes

to our shopping behavior.

Take the extra time to research and think --

Do I really need this item?

before making a purchase.

구매 전에 그걸 생각해보세요.

And if every one of us adults in the US

미국의 모든 성인 한 명 한 명이

returned five less items this year,

한 해에 5개 물품을 덜 반품하면

we would keep 240 million pounds of clothes out of the landfill.

11만 톤의 의류를 매립장에 버리지 않아도 됩니다.

Six percent reduction, just like that.

그것만 해도 6%를 줄일 수 있죠.

This environmental problem that we have created

우리가 만들어 낸 이 환경 문제는

is not thousands of years away;

수천 년 후의 일이 아닙니다.

it's happening today,

지금 일어나는 문제이고

and must stop now to prevent growing landfills across the globe.

전 세계적으로 매립지가 늘어나는 걸 막으려면 지금 멈추어야 합니다.

I want to leave my daughter and my daughter's daughter

저는 저의 딸과, 그 딸의 딸에게

a better and cleaner place than I found it,

제가 살던 곳보다 더 낫고 더 깨끗한 곳을 물려주고 싶습니다.

so I have not only stopped overordering,

그래서 저는 과다 주문을 중지했을 뿐만 아니라

I recycle religiously as well.

또한 착실하게 재활용까지 합니다.

And you can, too. It's not difficult.

Before we fill our shopping carts and our landfills

with extra items that we don't want,
