Okay, in this presentation,

I'm going to be putting the right side of your brains

through a fairly serious workout.

You're going to see a lot of imagery,

and it's not always connected to what I'm talking about,

so I need you to kind of split your brains in half

So I am one of those people

with a transformative personal story.

Six years ago,

after 20 years in graphic design and typography,

I changed the way I was working

and the way most graphic designers work

to pursue a more personal approach to my work,

with only the humble attempt

My current work

in a way that has so taken me by surprise

that I still frequently wonder

what in the hell is going on.

대체 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 놀라곤 하죠.

And I'm slowly coming to understand

that the appeal of what I do

may be connected to why I do it.

These days, I call myself a graphic artist.

So where my work as a graphic designer

Now, this is heresy

So I exist somewhat outside of the mainstream

I tend to be interested in more ethereal qualities,

So I have a particular imaginative approach to visual work.

The things that interest me when I'm working

I'm going to give you a couple of examples of how my brain works.

This is a piece that I did for

The Guardian newspaper in the U.K.

They have a magazine that they call G2.

And this is for their puzzle special

in 2007.

And puzzling it is.

정말 알쏭달쏭하죠.

I started by creating a series of tiling units.

And these tiling units, I designed

specifically so that they would contain

그 모양 안에 글자들을 부분적으로

parts of letterforms within their shapes

포함하게끔 제가 디자인한 것이죠.

so that I could then

join those pieces together

to create letters and then words

within the abstract patterning.

But then as well, I was able to

just flip them, rotate them

And as you can see, it's extremely difficult to read.

But all I have to do is

fill certain areas of those letterforms

and I can bring those words out of

I'm also interested in working with

unusual materials

and common materials in unusual ways.

So this requires figuring out how to

get the most out of something's innate properties

and also how to bend it to my will.

So ultimately,

my goal is to create something unexpected.

To this end, I have worked in sugar

for Stefan Sagmeister,

3번이나 TED 강연을 했던

three-time TED speaker.

And this project began essentially

on my kitchen table.

I've been eating cereal for breakfast

all of my life.

And for that same amount of time,

I've been spilling sugar on the table

and just kind of playing with it with my fingers.

by putting the sugar down on a white surface

and then manipulating it to get

the words and designs out of it.

Recently, I've also made some

최근엔 소위 교양있는 바로크식 테두리를

rather highbrow baroque borders

교양없는 파스타로

out of lowbrow pasta.

만들기도 했습니다.

And this is for a chapter that I'm doing in a book,

그리고 이것은 어떤 책의 한 장을 위한 디자인입니다.

and the chapter is on honor.

경의(honor)라는 주제를 다루는 장이죠.

So it's a little bit unexpected,

but, in a way, it refers

to the macaroni art

that children make for their parents

or they make in school and give to their parents,

I'm very interested in wonder,

in design as an impetus to inquiring.

To say I wonder is to say

I question, I ask.

And to experience wonder is to experience awe.

So I'm currently working on a book,

which plays with both senses of the word,

The world is full of wonder.

But the world of graphic design,

So I'm using my own writings

When we look at works like this,

we tend to associate them with children's literature.

There's an implication that ornamental graphics

But I really hope to have the opportunity

This book is taking rather a long time,

but I'm nearly done.

For some reason, I thought it would be a good idea

And this is it -- just to give you and me a moment to catch up.

So I do these valentines.

또 저는 발렌타인 카드도 만듭니다.

I've been sending out valentines

저는 2005년부터 상당히 많은 사람들에게

on a fairly large scale since 2005.

발렌타인 카드를 보내기 시작했죠.

These are my valentines

이게 제가 2005년과

from 2005 and 2006.

2006년에 만든 카드들입니다.

And I started by

처음엔 간단하게 했죠.

doing just a single image like this

이런 그림 하나를 가지고

and sending them out to each person.

똑같이 모두에게 보냈으니까요.

But in 2007,

그런데 2007년에 저는

I got the cockamamie idea

제 메일링 리스트에 있는 모든 사람들에게

to hand-draw each valentine

손으로 일일이 카드를 만들어 주자는

for everyone on my mailing list.

어이없는 아이디어를 떠올리고 말았죠.

I reduced my mailing list to 150 people.

저는 카드를 보낼 150명을 추려냈습니다.

And I drew each person

그리고 각 사람에게

their own unique valentine

특별한 발렌타인 카드를 만들어

and put their name on it

이름을 적고,

and numbered it and signed it and sent it out.

번호를 매긴 후 사인을 해서 보냈죠.

Believe it or not, I devised this

못 믿으시겠지만 저는 이것을

as a timesaving method.

시간을 절약할 방안으로 생각해 냈습니다.

I was very busy in the beginning of that year,

and I didn't know when I was going to find time

to design and print a single valentine.

And I thought that I could kind of do this piecemeal

as I was traveling.

It didn't exactly work out that way.

There's a longer story to this,

but I did get them all done in time,

and they were extremely well received.

Last year,

I took a more conceptual approach to the valentine.

I had this idea that I wanted people

to receive a kind of

자신들의 우편함안의

mysterious love letter,

파편을 발견하는 것처럼 느끼게

like a found fragment in their mailbox.

I wanted it to be something

that was not addressed to them

보내는 사람도,

or signed by me,

받는 사람도 누구인지 불분명하게 만들어서

something that caused them to wonder

what on Earth this thing was.

And I specifically wrote

four pages that don't connect.

There were four different versions of this.

And I wrote them

so that they begin in the middle of a sentence,

end in the middle of a sentence.

And they're on the one hand, universal,

so I avoid specific names or places,

but on the other hand, they're personal.

So I wanted people to really get the sense that

they had received something that could have been

정말 본인에게 쓴 것일지도 모르는 연애편지를

a love letter to them.

And I'm just going to read one of them to you.

"You've never really been sure of this,

but I can assure you that this quirk

you're so self-conscious of

the collecting of moments with the hope for preservation

and at the same time release.

모으는 순간, 순간들.

Impossible? I don't think so.

불가능하다고요? 전 그렇게 생각지 않아요.

I know this makes you embarrassed.

제가 이런 말을 하면 창피해 하시겠죠.

I'm certain I can see you blushing.

얼굴이 붉어지는 게 눈에 선하네요.

But I just have to tell you because

하지만 전 꼭 말하고 싶어요, 왜냐면

sometimes I hear your self-doubt,

and it's so crushing to think

So Valentine's Day

is coming up in a couple of days,

and these are currently arriving

in mailboxes all around the world.

This year, I got, what I really have to say

올해 저는, 정말 훌륭하다고밖에 표현할 길이 없는

is a rather brilliant idea,

to laser cut

그건 바로

my valentines

이미 쓴 크리스마스 카드를

out of used Christmas cards.

레이저로 잘라 발렌타인 카드를 만드는 것이었죠.

So I solicited friends

그래서 전 친구들에게 부탁해

to send me their used Christmas cards,

이미 사용한 크리스마스 카드들을 모았습니다.

and I made 500 of these.

그리고 이런 것들을 500장 만들었죠.

Each one of them is completely different.

각각의 것이 모두 완전히 다릅니다.

I'm just really, really thrilled with them.

전 그저 이것들을 보면 정말 정말 감격스러워요.

I don't have that much else to say,

그 이상으로 더 이상은 할 말이 없습니다.

but they turned out really well.

I do spend a lot of time on my work.

And one of the things that I've been thinking about recently

is what is worth while.

과연 무엇이 정말로 가치있는 일인지 하는 것입니다.

What is it that's worth spending my time on

과연 내 시간을 소비할 가치가 있으며

and my life on in this way?

인생을 투자할 가치가 있는 일은 무엇일까요?

Working in the commercial world,

상업적 세상에서 일을 하는 것은,

this is something that I do have to struggle with at times.

가끔씩 제가 어려움을 겪는 부분 중 하나입니다.

And yes, sometimes I'm swayed by money.

때로는 저도 돈에 의해 이리저리 흔들리곤 하죠.

But ultimately, I don't consider that a worthy goal.

하지만 전 궁극적으로 돈이 가치있는 목표라고 생각지 않습니다.

What makes something worthwhile for me

제게 있어 가치있는 것은

is the people I work for or with,

제가 함께 일하는 사람들이나

the conditions I work under

일을 하는 조건들,

and the audience that I'm able to reach.

그리고 제가 다가갈 수 있는 대중들입니다.

So I might ask: "Who is it for?"

"What does it say?"

and "What does it do?"

You know, I have to tell you, it's really difficult

with these unbelievably brilliant minds,

And it's very, very common

for designers and people in the visual arts

to feel that we're

not contributing enough,

or worse, that all we're doing is

is extremely important in society.

Just in the way that I'm inspired

by books

잡지들, 그리고 일상 생활 속의 대화들과

and magazines of all kinds,

영화들에서 영감을 얻었던

conversations I have, movies,

바로 그러한 방법으로요.

so I also think,

또한 저는

when I put visual work out there into the mass media,

제가 시각적인 작품을 대중매체에 공개했을 때

work that is interesting, unusual,

흥미롭고, 독특하고,

intriguing,

매력적이고

work that maybe opens up that sense

사람들의 마음에 무언가

of inquiry in the mind,

호기심을 유발시키는 그런 작품은

that I'm seeding the imagination of the populace.

대중의 마음 속에서 상상력의 씨앗이 된다고 생각합니다.

And you just never know who

그 씨앗을 받아들이는 사람들 중

is going to take something from that

어느 누가 그것을 싹틔워

and turn it into something else,

무언가로 성장시킬지 모르는 일이죠.

because inspiration

영감이라는 것은

is cross-pollinating.

꽃의 수분과도 같은 것입니다.

So a piece of mine

그러니까 제 작품이

may inspire a playwright

한 극작가에게 영감을 줄 수도 있고,

or a novelist or a scientist,

소설가나 과학자를 감동시킬 수도 있죠.

and that in turn may be the seed

그러면 그것이 또 한 의사나

that inspires a doctor

자선운동가,

or a philanthropist

또는 베이비시터에게

or a babysitter.

씨앗이 될 수도 있는 겁니다.

And this isn't something that you can quantify

그리고 이것은 양을 따지거나

or track or measure,

행적을 살피거나 측정을 할 수 있는 것이 아닙니다.

and we tend to undervalue things in society

우리는 우리가 사회속에서 측정할 수 없는 것들을

that we can't measure.

낮게 평가하는 성향이 있습니다.

But I really believe

그렇지만 저는

that a fully operating, rich society

제대로 굴러가는 풍족한 사회에

needs these seeds coming from all directions

이러한 씨앗들이 많이 필요하다고 믿습니다.

and all disciplines

모든 방향으로부터, 모든 수단을 통해

in order to keep the gears of inspiration

영감과 상상력의 원천을

and imagination

흐르게 하고, 순환시키고, 자라게

flowing and cycling and growing.

하기 위해서 말입니다.

So that's why I do what I do,

이것이 제가 지금 하는 일을 하는 이유이고,

and why I spend so much time and effort on it,

제가 거기에 많은 시간과 노력을 들이는 이유이며,

and why I work in the commercial, public sphere,

또 제가 순수 예술의 고립되고 사적인 공간이 아니라

as opposed to the isolated, private sphere

상업적이고 공적인 공간에서

of fine art:

일하는 이유입니다.

because I want as many people as possible

왜냐하면 저는 가능한 한 많은 사람들이

to see my work, notice it, be drawn into it,

제 작품을 보고, 주목하고, 빠져들기를,

and be able to take something from it.

또 사람들이 그 안에서 무언가를 얻어 가기를 원합니다.

And I actually really feel that it's worthwhile

그리고 전 이 일에 이렇게

to spend my valuable

제 귀하고 한정된 시간을 할애할

and limited time on this Earth

가치가 충분히 있다고

in this way.
