Dogs have interests.

It's always sort of struck me as really a scary thought

It's a difficult choice, right?

Rear end, owner. Rear end wins.

I mean, you lose.

You cannot compete with the environment,

So, when we train, we're always trying to take into account

Now, I'm here largely because

there's kind of a rift in dog training at the moment

that -- on one side, we have people who think that you train a dog,

number one, by making up rules, human rules.

We don't take the dog's point of view into account.

So the human says, "You're going to act this way, damn it.

We're going to force you to act against your will, to bend to our will."

Then, number two, we keep these rules a secret from the dog.

And then number three, now we can punish the dog

for breaking rules he didn't even know existed.

So you get a little puppy, he comes. His only crime is he grew.

When he was a little puppy, he puts his paws on your leg --

And you go, "Oh, there's a good boy."

You bend down, you pat him -- you reward him for jumping up.

His one mistake is he's a Tibetan mastiff, and a few months later,

he weighs, you know, 80 pounds.

Every time he jumps up, he gets all sorts of abuse.

So, this whole dominance issue -- number one,

Male dogs are very serious about a hierarchy,

Of course, female dogs, bitches, on the other hand,

have several bitch amendments to male hierarchical rule.

The number one is, "I have it, you don't."

And what you will find is a very, very low-ranking bitch

will quite easily keep a bone away from a high-ranking male.

So, we get in dog training this notion of dominances,

Dogs get so abused.

these are the three species which are so abused in life.

And the reason is built into their behavior --

Like, "Oh, I'm sorry you had to beat me. I'm really sorry, yes, it's my fault."

They are just so beatable,

그들은 너무나 쉽게 굴복할 뿐입니다.

and that's why they get beaten.

The poor puppy jumps up, you open the dog book, what does it say?

가여운 강아지가 뛰어오릅니다, 당신은 개 훈련 서적을 펼치지요, 책에는 뭐라고 써 있습니까?

"Hold his front paws, squeeze his front paws,

"앞발을 쥔다, 앞발을 꽉 쥔다,

stamp on his hind feet, squirt him in the face with lemon juice,

뒷다리를 밟는다, 개의 얼굴에 레몬즙을 쏜다,

hit him on the head with a rolled-up newspaper,

돌돌 만 신문지로 머리를 때린다,

knee him in the chest, flip him over backwards."

Because he grew?

개가 자랐다는 이유로?

And because he's performing a behavior you've trained him to do?

그리고 그렇게 하게끔 훈련받은 대로 행동했기 때문에?

This is insanity.

I ask owners, "Well, how would you like the dog to greet you?"

And people say, "Well, I don't know, to sit, I guess."

I said, "Let's teach him to sit."

And then we give him a reason for sitting.

Because the first stage

is basically teaching a dog ESL.

I could speak to you and say, "Laytay-chai, paisey, paisey."

Go on, something should happen now.

Well, I've got news for you.

The dog doesn't speak English, or American, or Spanish, or French.

So the first stage in training is to teach the dog ESL,

English as a second language.

And that's how we use the food lure in the hand,

and we use food because we're dealing with owners.

My wife doesn't need food -- she's a great trainer,

much better than I am.

I don't need food, but the average owner says,

"Puppy, sit."

Or they go, "Sit, sit, sit."

They're making a hand signal in front of the dog's rectum for some reason,

like the dog has a third eye there -- it's insane.

You know, "Sit, sit."

No, we go, "Puppy, sit" -- boom, it's got it in six to 10 trials.

Then we phase out the food as a lure,

and now the dog knows that "sit" means sit,

and you can actually communicate to a dog

in a perfectly constructed English sentence.

"Phoenix, come here, take this, and go to Jamie, please."

And I've taught her "Phoenix," "come here," "take this," "go to"

그리고 전 개에게 '피닉스', '이리 와', '이거 물어', '가 봐'와

and the name of my son, "Jamie."

아들 이름 '제이미'가 뭔지 알려줍니다.

And the dog can take a note,

개가 기억하게 되면,

and I've got my own little search-and-rescue dog.

나만의 작은 탐색 구조견이 생기는 것이지요.

He'll find Jamie wherever he is, you know,

개는 제이미가 어디 있든 찾아낼 것입니다, 그러니까,

wherever kids are, crushing rocks by a stream or something,

아이가 어디에 있든, 급류나 뭔가에 떠내려가 바위 틈에 끼어있든,

and take him a little message that says,

"Hey, dinner's ready. Come in for dinner."

So, at this point, the dog knows what we want it to do.

Will it do it?

Not necessarily, no.

As I said, if he's in the park and there's a rear end to sniff,

The dog lives with you, the dog can get you any time.

At the moment, he's in the park, and you are competing

with smells, and other dogs, and squirrels.

So the second stage in training is to teach the dog to want to do

what we want him to do, and this is very easy.

We use the Premack principle.

Basically, we follow a low-frequency behavior --

one the dog doesn't want to do --

by a high-frequency behavior, commonly known as a behavior problem,

That will then become a reward for the lower-frequency behavior.

Yes, we put "sniff butt" on queue.

So now all of these distractions that worked against training

And what we're doing, in essence, is we're teaching the dog, kind of like --

And I can imagine this dog, you know,

saying, "Wow, my owners, they are so incredibly easy to train.

They're like Golden Retrievers.

골든리트리버 같잖아.

All I have to do is sit, and they do everything.

내가 앉기만 하면 전부 다 해주니 말이야.

They open doors, they drive my car, they massage me,

문도 열어주고, 차에도 태워주고, 주물러주기도 하니,

they will throw tennis balls,

게다가 테니스공도 던져주고,

they will cook for me and serve the food.

내가 먹을 요리도 해서 갖다바치겠는걸.

It's like, if I just sit, that's my command.

이를테면, 앉기만 하면 그게 명령하는 거로군.

Then I have my own personal doorman,

그러면 전속 수위에,

chauffeur, masseuse, chef and waiter."

운전기사에, 마사지사에, 요리사와 웨이터 노릇까지 해주는군."

And now the dog's really happy.

And this, to me, is always what training is.

So we really motivate the dog to want to do it,

such that the need for punishment seldom comes up.

Now we move to phase three, when now --

there's times, you know, when daddy knows best.

아빠가 대장일 때가 있습니다.

And I have a little sign on my fridge, and it says,

전 냉장고에 작은 글귀를 붙여놨습니다.

"Because I'm the daddy, that's why."

"왜냐면 난 아빠니까, 그게 다야."

Sorry, no more explanation. "I'm the daddy, you're not. Sit."

죄송합니다, 더 이상의 설명이 없군요. "난 아빠야, 넌 아빠가 아니고, (그러니까) 앉아."

And there's times, for example,

그리고 예를 들자면 이런 경우도 있습니다.

if my son's friends leave the door open,

the dogs have to know you don't step across this line.

This is a life-or-death thing.

생사가 걸린 문제니까요.

You leave this, the sanctity of your house,

개가 안전한 집을 떠나 문 밖을 나서면

and you could be hit on the street.

길에서 차에 치일 수도 있습니다.

So some things we have to let the dog know,

그러니까 개에게 알려줘야 하는 거지요.

"You mustn't do this."

"이런 건 하면 안돼."

And so we have to enforce, but without force.

강제로 그렇게 해야 하지만, 무력을 쓰지 말아야 합니다.

People here get very confused about what a punishment is.

여기 모인 여러분은 처벌의 의미에 대해 매우 혼동스럽겠지요.

They think a punishment is something nasty.

대개 처벌이라고 하면 뭔가 끔찍한 것을 떠올립니다.

I bet a lot of you do, right?

여러분도 거의 다 그렇게 생각하실테고요, 안 그런가요?

You think it's something painful, or scary, or nasty.

처벌은 어쨌거나 아프고, 아니면 무섭거나 끔찍한 거라고 생각하시겠죠.

It doesn't have to be.

꼭 그렇지만은 않습니다.

There's several definitions of what a punishment is,

처벌의 정의에는 여러 가지가 있습니다.

but one definition, the most popular, is:

하지만 가장 보편적으로 알려진 정의에 따르면

a punishment is a stimulus that reduces the immediately preceding behavior,

such that it's less likely to occur in the future.

It does not have to be nasty, scary or painful.

처벌이 꼭 끔찍하고, 무섭거나 아픈 것이어야 할 필요는 없습니다.

And I would say, if it doesn't have to be, then maybe it shouldn't be.

그리고 제가 말씀드리고 싶은 것은, 그럴 필요가 없다면 그러지 말아야 한다는 것입니다.

I was working with a very dangerous dog about a year ago.

한 1년 전인가, 아주 위험한 개를 훈련시킨 적이 있습니다.

And this was a dog that put both his owners in hospital,

이 개 때문에 주인은 물론,

plus the brother-in-law, plus the child.

처남, 아이까지 병원 신세를 졌지요.

And I only agreed to work with it if they promised it would stay in their house,

저는 개를 집 안에서 키우고

and they never took it outside.

절대로 밖에 내보내지 않겠다는 약속을 해야만 개를 훈련시키겠다고 말했습니다.

The dog is actually euthanized now,

그 개는 사실 지금은 안락사로 죽었습니다.

but this was a dog I worked with for a while.

A lot of the aggression happened around the kitchen,

so while I was there -- this was on the fourth visit --

we did a four and a half hour down-stay, with the dog on his mat.

And he was kept there by the owner's calm insistence.

When the dog would try to leave the mat,

The dog broke his down-stay 22 times in four and a half hours, while she cooked dinner,

because we had a lot of aggression related towards food.

The breaks got fewer and fewer.

You see, the punishment was working.

The behavior problem was going away.

And a lot of my friends train really neat animals,

Your head now is 100 yards away, sailing through the air, OK?

This is crazy.

정신 나간 짓이죠.

So, where do we go from here?

자, 이제 어떻게 할까요?

We want a better way.

주인은 더 나은 방법을 원합니다.

Dogs deserve better.

개도 더 나은 대접을 받아야 마땅하고요.

But for me, the reason for this actually has to do with dogs.

It has to do with watching people train puppies,

and realizing they have horrendous interaction skills,

horrendous relationship skills.

Not just with their puppy, but with the rest of the family at class.

그저 강아지에 대해서만 그런 것이 아니고, 가족 구성원들과도 그렇더군요.

I mean, my all-time classic is another "come here" one.

제 말은, 어디서든 통하는 고전적인 말은 "이리와"라는 것이죠.

You see someone in the park -- and I'll cover my mic when I say this,

공원에서 어떤 사람을 보게 됩니다. 지금은 마이크를 가리도록 하지요.

because I don't want to wake you up -- and there's the owner in the park,

주무시는 분을 깨우고 싶지는 않으니까요. 공원에 개주인이 있고,

and their dog's over here, and they say, "Rover, come here.

개가 이 쪽에 있습니다. 주인이 말하지요. "로버, 이리와.

Rover, come here. Rover, come here, you son of a bitch."

로버, 이리와. 로버, 이리와. 이 개자식."

The dog says, "I don't think so."

개는 말합니다. "아닌데."

(Laughter)

I mean, who in their right mind

그러니까, 제정신이 박힌 사람이라면

would think that a dog would want to approach them

그렇게 소리를 지르는데 어떤 개가 부르면 올 거라고

when they're screaming like that?

Instead, the dog says, "I know that tone. I know that tone.

Previously, when I've approached, I've gotten punished there."

I was walking onto a plane --

this, for me, was a pivotal moment in my career,

and it really cemented what I wanted to do

the notion of how to teach puppies in a dog-friendly way

to want to do what we want to do, so we don't have to force them.

주인이 원하는 것을 개가 하게끔 하지만 강요할 필요는 없는 것입니다.

You know, I puppy-train my child.

아시다시피, 저는 제 아이도 훈련시킵니다.

And the seminal moment was, I was getting on a plane in Dallas,

이 세미나에 참석하려고 달라스에서 비행기를 타고 있었지요.

and in row two was a father, I presume, and a young boy about five,

두번째 줄에 아마 아버지인 것 같은 사람이 있었고, 한 다섯 살 쯤 되어 보이는 남자아이 하나가

kicking the back of the chair.

좌석 뒤를 발로 차고 있더군요.

"Johnny, don't do that."

"조니, 그러지 마라."

Kick, kick, kick.

차고, 차고, 또 차고.

"Johnny, don't do that." Kick, kick, kick.

"조니, 그러지 말래도." 차고, 차고, 또 차고.

I'm standing right here with my bag.

전 바로 옆에 가방을 가지고 서 있었지요.

The father leans over, grabs him like this and gives him ugly face.

아버지는 아들 쪽으로 몸을 굽히더니 이렇게 손을 움켜쥐고 험상궂은 얼굴을 해보였습니다.

And ugly face is this --

그 험상궂은 얼굴은 이런 모양이었지요.

when you go face-to-face with a puppy or a child,

강아지나 아이와 직접 얼굴을 맞대고

you say, "What are you doing! Now stop it, stop it, stop it!"

이렇게 말할 때가 있죠. "뭐 하는 거야! 하지 마, 하지 마, 하지 말래도!"

And I went, "Oh my God, do I do something?"

전 생각했죠. "맙소사, 내가 뭘 어떻게 해야 하나?"

That child has lost everything --

아이는 모든 것을 잃고 맙니다.

that one of the two people he can trust in this world

아버지는 아이가 세상에서 가장 믿을 만한 두 명 중 한 명이었는데 말이죠.

has absolutely pulled the rug from under his feet.

완전히 믿는 도끼에 발등 찍힌 격입니다.

And I thought, "Do I tell this jerk to quit it?"

저는 생각했지요. "저 남자에게 그만두라고 말할까?"

I thought, "Ian, stay out of it, stay out of it, you know, walk on."

그러다가 생각합니다. "이안, 그냥 모른 척 하자. 모른 척 하자고, 알잖아, 다른 데로 가자."

I walked to the back of the plane,

저는 비행기 뒷편으로 갔지요.

I sat down, and a thought came to me.

자리에 앉으니 또 생각이 밀려왔습니다.

If that had been a dog, I would have laid him out.

개한테 저렇게 했다면 때려눕혔을텐데.

(Laughter)

If he had kicked a dog, I would have punched him out.

그 작자가 개를 발로 찼다면 저는 주먹을 날렸을지도 모릅니다.

He kicked a child, grabs the child like this and I let it go.

그는 애를 발로 차고, 이렇게 손을 쥐었는데 전 모른 척 했지요.

And this is what it's all about.

이게 제가 말하려고 하는 것입니다.

These relationship skills are so easy.

이런 식으로 관계 맺는 기술은 너무나 쉽지요.

I mean, we as humans, our shallowness when we choose a life-mate

제 말은, 우리 인간은 인생의 반려동물을 선택할 때

based on the three Cs -- coat color, conformation, cuteness.

3C, 그러니까 코트 색깔, 모양, 귀여운 정도를 기준으로 삼을 정도로 얄팍하다는 것입니다.

You know, kind of like a little robot.

작은 로봇을 고르듯 말이죠.

This is how we go into a relationship, and it's hunky-dory for a year.

이것이 우리가 관계를 시작하는 방법인데, 처음 한 해 동안은 즐겁게 지냅니다.

And then, a little behavior problem comes up.

그러다가 작은 행동문제들이 나타나기 시작합니다.

No different from the dog barking.

아니오, 개가 짖는 것과는 다릅니다.

The husband won't clear up his clothes,

남편은 자기 옷을 세탁하지 않을 것입니다.

or the wife's always late for meetings, whatever it is, OK?

아니면 부인이 늘 모임에 늦거나요, 문제가 뭐든 말입니다, 아시겠어요?

And it then starts, and we get into this thing,

문제가 생기기 시작하면 이런 것에 익숙해지고

and our personal feedback -- there's two things about it.

개개인의 반응으로는 두 가지가 나타납니다.

When you watch people interacting with animals or other people,

동물이나 타인과 상호관계를 맺는 사람을 지켜보면

there is very little feedback, it's too infrequent.

개개인의 반응행동은 미비하고, 드물게 나타납니다.

And when it happens, it's bad, it's nasty.

하지만 그 반응은 불쾌하고 끔찍하지요.

You see it's especially in families, especially with spouses,

특히 가족, 배우자,

especially with children, especially with parents.

자식, 부모에 대해서는 더합니다.

You see it especially in the workplace,

직장에서도 심한데

especially from boss to employee.

상사가 직원을 대할 때 그렇지요.

It's as if there's some schadenfreude there,

남의 불행이 나의 기쁨이라고 생각하는 것처럼요.

that we actually take delight in people getting things wrong,

다른 사람의 일이 잘못되었을 때 우리가 기쁨을 느끼는 이유는

so that we can then moan and groan and bitch at them.

우리가 그들에게 앓는 소리를 하거나, 욕을 하며 화낼 수 있기 때문인거죠.

And this, I would say, is the biggest human foible that we have.

그리고 이것이야말로, 제 생각에는 인간이 가진 가장 큰 약점입니다.

It really is.

정말입니다.

We take the good for granted, and we moan and groan at the bad.

인간은 선을 당연한 것으로 생각하고, 침대에 누워 신음하고 고통스러워합니다.

And I think this whole notion of these skills should be taught.

저는 이러한 기술의 전체적인 개념을 가르쳐야 한다고 생각합니다.

You know, calculus is wonderful.

미적분학이 멋지다는 것은 모두 아시죠.

When I was a kid, I was a calculus whiz.

저는 어릴 때 미적분학 전문가였습니다.

I don't understand a thing about it now, but I could do it as a kid.

지금은 하라면 못 하겠지만, 어릴 때는 할 수 있었지요.

Geometry, fantastic. You know, quantum mechanics --

기하학도 환상적입니다. 그리고 양자역학도 말이지요.

these are cool things.

전부 멋진 것들입니다.

But they don't save marriages and they don't raise children.

하지만 그런 것으로 결혼을 하고 애를 키울 수는 없지요.

And my look to the future is,

그리고 미래에 대한 저의 생각은,

and what I want to do with this doggy stuff, is to teach people

제가 가진 애견 훈련 기술을 가지고, 사람들을 가르치는 것입니다.

that you know, your husband's just as easy to train.

남편은 훈련시키기 쉽다는 것, 아시죠.

Probably easier -- if you got a Rottie -- much easier to train.

어쩌면 더 쉬워질 수도 있습니다. 로티라는 남편이 있으면 훈련시키기 한결 쉬워진다는 말입니다.

Your kids are easy to train.

자식들도 훈련시키기는 쉽습니다.

All you've got to do is to watch them,

자식이 하는 행동과 말을 지켜보고 있다가,

to time-sample the behavior, and say, every five minutes,

5분마다 이렇게 묻는 거지요.

you ask the question, "Is it good, or is it bad?"

"잘했는가, 잘못했는가?" 스스로에게 물어보세요

If it's good, say, "That was really neat, thank you."

좋은 것이라면, 이렇게 말합니다. "정말 착하구나, 고맙다."

That is such a powerful training technique.

이것이야말로 가장 효과좋은 훈련 기술입니다.

This should be taught in schools.

학교에서도 이렇게 가르쳐야 합니다.

Relationships -- how do you negotiate?

인간관계, 어떻게 협상할 생각이니?

How you do negotiate with your friend who wants your toy?

네 장난감을 갖고 싶어하는 친구와 어떻게 협상할 거니?

You know, how to prepare you for your first relationship?

맨 처음 인간관계에 대해 어떤 준비를 할 생각이니?

How on earth about raising children?

자녀 양육은 대체 어떻게 준비해야 합니까?

We think how we do it -- one night in bed, we're pregnant,

우리가 어떻게 하는지 생각해봅시다. 하룻밤 침대에 누웠고, 임신했지요.

and then we're raising the most important thing in life, a child.

그리고 인생에서 가장 중요한 것을 키우게 됩니다. 바로 자식이지요.

No, this is what should be taught -- the good living, the good habits,

아니오, 가르쳐야 하는 것은 선한 삶, 좋은 습관입니다.

which are just as hard to break as bad habits.

나쁜 습관을 없애는 것 만큼이나 힘든 일입니다.

So, that would be my wish to the future.

그것이 앞으로 제가 바라는 희망사항입니다.

Ah, damn, I wanted to end exactly on time,

아 이런, 시간을 정확히 맞춰서 끝내고 싶었는데 말이죠.
