We are all much more likely than any of us would like to admit

to miss what's right in front of our eyes.

And in fact,

we're sometimes most likely to turn away from things

precisely because of the threat that they represent to us,

in business, life and the world.

So I want to give you an example from my world, economic policy.

So when Alan Greenspan was head of the Federal Reserve,

his entire job was to watch out for problems in the US economy

and to make sure that they didn't spin out of control.

So, after 2006,

when real estate prices peaked,

more and more and more respected leaders and institutions

started to sound the alarm bells

about risky lending and dangerous market bubbles.

As you know, in 2008 it all came tumbling down.

Banks collapsed,

global stock markets lost nearly half their value,

millions and millions of people lost their homes to foreclosure.

And at the bottom,

nearly one in 10 Americans was out of work.

So after things calmed down a little bit,

Greenspan and many others came out with a postmortem and said,

They called it "a black swan."

Except it wasn't always such a surprise.

For example, my Manhattan apartment nearly doubled in value

in less than four years.

거의 2배가 되었습니다.

I saw the writing on the wall and I sold it.

So, a lot of other people also saw the warning,

spoke out publicly

and they were ignored.

So we didn't know exactly what the crisis was going to look like,

not the exact parameters,

but we could all tell

that the thing coming at us was as dangerous, visible and predictable

The black swan lends itself

to the idea that we don't have power over our futures.

And unfortunately, the less control that we think we have,

the more likely we are to downplay it

or ignore it entirely.

And this dangerous dynamic masks another problem:

that most of the problems that we're facing

are so probable and obvious,

they're things that we can see, but we still don't do anything about.

So I created the gray rhino metaphor

to meet what I felt was an urgent need.

To help us to take a fresh look,

with the same passion that people had for the black swan,

but this time, for the things that were highly obvious,

highly probable, but still neglected.

매우 가능성 있지만 여전히 무시당하는 것들을 나타냅니다.

Those are the gray rhinos.

회색 코뿔소들이죠.

Once you start looking for gray rhinos,

회색 코뿔소를 찾기 시작하시면

you see them in the headlines every day.

매일 헤드라인에서 찾으실 수 있으실 겁니다.

And so what I see in the headlines is another big gray rhino,

제가 헤드라인에서 발견하는 것은 또 다른 큰 회색 코뿔소,

a new highly probable financial crisis.

발발할 가능성이 높은 새로운 경제위기입니다.

And I wonder if we've learned anything in the last 10 years.

So if you listen to Washington or Wall Street,

you could almost be forgiven for thinking that only smooth sailing laid ahead.

But in China, where I spend a lot of time,

the conversation is totally different.

The entire economic team,

all the way up to president Xi Jinping himself,

talk very specifically and clearly

about financial risks as gray rhinos,

and how they can tame them.

Now, to be sure, China and the US

분명히 중국과 미국은

have very, very different systems of government,

which affects what they're able to do or not.

정부가 할 수 있는 것과 없는 것에 영향을 줍니다.

And many of the root causes for their economic problems

그리고 경제 문제들의 근원의 대부분이

are totally different.

But it's no secret that both countries have problems

with debt, with inequality and with economic productivity.

So how come the conversations are so different?

You could actually ask this question,

but about just about everyone.

The auto companies that put safety first

and the ones that don't bother to recall their shoddy cars

until after people die.

리콜하지도 않는 회사들에게요.

The grandparents who, in preparing for the inevitable --

피할 수 없는 그날을 준비하시는 조부모님들에게요.

the ones who have the eulogy written,

추도사를 미리 써놓고

the menu for the funeral lunch.

장례식 점심 메뉴를 골라놓은 분들요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

My grandparents did.

제 조부모님들이 그러셨어요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And everything but the final date chiseled into the gravestone.

그리고 사망날짜 외에 모든 것을 묘비에 새겨 놓으셨어요.

But then you have the grandparents on the other side,

한편 다른 쪽 조부모님들은

who don't put their final affairs in order,

그들의 마지막을 정리하지 않고

who don't get rid of all the junk

they've been hoarding for decades and decades

and leave their kids to deal with it.

So what makes the difference between one side and the other?

Why do some people see things and deal with them,

and the other ones just look away?

So the first one has to do with culture, society,

the people around you.

If you think that someone around you

is going to help pick you up when you fall,

you're much more likely to see a danger as being smaller.

And that allows us to take good chances, not just the bad ones.

For example, like risking criticism

when you talk about the danger that nobody wants you to talk about.

Or taking the opportunities that are kind of scary,

so in their own way are gray rhinos.

So the US has a very individualist culture -- go it alone.

미국에는 혼자서 한다는 개인주의적 문화가 있습니다.

And paradoxically,

this makes many Americans much less open to change

and taking good risks.

좋은 위험을 택하지 않게 합니다.

In China, by contrast,

people believe that the government is going to keep problems from happening,

which might not always be what happens, but people believe it.

반드시 그렇지는 않지만 그래도 사람들은 그렇게 믿습니다.

They believe they can rely on their families,

그들은 가족에게 기댈 수 있다고 믿어서

so that makes them more likely to take certain risks.

어떤 위험을 감수할 가능성이 더 높습니다.

Like buying Beijing real estate,

베이징 부동산을 사거나

or like being more open about the fact that they need to change direction,

방향을 바꿔야 할 것이라는 사실에 더 개방적이고

and in fact, the pace of change in China is absolutely amazing.

중국에서 변화의 속도는 사실 대단합니다.

Second of all,

두 번째로

how much do you know about a situation,

상황에 대해 얼마나 알고 있는지와

how much are you willing to learn?

얼마나 배울 용의가 있는지입니다.

And are you willing to see things even when it's not what you want?

여러분이 원하는 것이 아니더라도 있는 그대로 볼 용의가 있으시나요?

So many of us are so unlikely

우리들 중 아주 많은 이들은

그냥 잊었으면 하는 것들에 주의를 기울이지 않을 확률이 아주 높습니다.

to pay attention to the things that we just want to black out,

we don't like them.

우리가 그것을 싫어하기 때문이죠.

We pay attention to what we want to see, what we like, what we agree with.

우리가 보고 싶은 것, 우리가 좋아하는 것, 우리가 동의하는 것만 보려합니다.

But we have the opportunity and the ability

하지만 우리에게는 이 사각지대를

to correct those blind spots.

고칠 기회와 능력이 있습니다.

I spend a lot of time talking with people of all walks of life

저는 많은 시간을 각계 각층의 사람들과

그들 삶과 태도 속의 회색 코뿔소에 대해 말하는 데 보냅니다.

about the gray rhinos in their life and their attitudes.

And you might think

여러분이 생각하시기에

that the people who are more afraid of risk,

who are more sensitive to them,

더욱 민감한 사람들은

would be the ones who would be less open to change.

이를 바꾸는데 덜 개방적인 사람들일 것이라 보시기 쉽습니다.

But the opposite is actually true.

하지만 사실은 정반대입니다.

I've found that the people

제가 찾아낸 것은

who are wiling to recognize the problems around them

그들 주변의 문제들을 인식하고

and make plans

계획을 세우는 분들은

are the ones who are able to tolerate more risk, good risk,

더 많은 위험, 좋은 위험을 감당할 수 있고

and deal with the bad risk.

나쁜 위험을 해결한다는 것입니다.

And it's because as we seek information,

우리가 정보를 찾기 때문에

we increase our power to do something about the things that we're afraid of.

우리가 두려워하는 것들에 대해 무언가를 할 힘을 키우죠.

And that brings me to my third point.

이로써 제 세번째 요점으로 넘어가게 되는데요.

How much control do you feel that you have

여러분 삶의 회색 코뿔소에 대해

over the gray rhinos in your life?

얼마나 통제할 수 있다고 생각하시나요?

One of the reasons we don't act

우리가 행동하지 않는 이유들 중 하나는

is that we often feel too helpless.

종종 우리가 너무 무력하다고 느끼기 때문입니다.

Think of climate change, it can feel so big,

기후 변화를 생각해보세요. 너무 크게 느껴지시죠.

that not a single one of us could make a difference.

우리 중 누구 하나도 변화를 일으킬 수 없을 것만 같이요.

So some people go about life denying it.

그래서 일부는 이를 부인하며 살아갑니다.

Other people blame everyone except themselves.

다른 사람들은 그들을 제외한 모두를 탓하며 살아갑니다.

Like my friend who says he's not ever going to give up his SUV

중국에서 화력발전소 건설을 중단할 때까지

until they stop building coal plants in China.

본인의 SUV 자동차를 포기하지 않을 것이라는 제 친구처럼요.

But we have an opportunity to change.

하지만 우리에겐 변화를 일으킬 기회가 있습니다.

No two of us are the same.

우리들 중 그 누구도 똑같지 않죠.

Every single one of us has the opportunity to change our attitudes,

우리 모두 각자는 태도를 바꿀 기회를 가지고 있습니다.

our own and those of people around us.

우리 자신과 또 주변 사람들의 태도 말입니다.

So today, I want to invite all of you

그래서 오늘 저는 여러분 모두가

to join me in helping to spark an open and honest conversation

저와 함께 여러분 주변에 있는 사람들과

우리 세계의 회색 코뿔소들에 대해

with the people around you,

정직하고 열린 대화를 시작하는 것을 도와주셨으면 합니다.

about the gray rhinos in our world,

and be brutally honest about how well we're dealing with them.

또 우리가 잘 대처하고 있는지에 대해 잔인할만큼 정직하시기를요.

I hear so many times in the States,

미국에서는 이런 말을 너무나 많이 들었습니다.

"Well, of course we should deal with obvious problems,

“우리는 물론 당연한 문제들을 해결해야 하죠.

but if you don't see what's in front of you,

그런데 앞에 있는 것을 볼 수가 없다면

you're either dumb or ignorant."

멍청하거나 무지한거죠.”

That's what they say, and I could not disagree more.

이런 말에 저는 전혀 동의하지 않습니다.

If you don't see what's in front of you,

여러분 앞에 있는 것을 보지 못한다고

you're not dumb, you're not ignorant,

멍청하거나 무지한 것이 아닙니다.

you're human.

그저 사람일 뿐입니다.

And once we all recognize that shared vulnerability,

우리 모두가 가진 그 취약성을 모두가 인식하게 된다면

that gives us the power to open our eyes,

그 인식이 우리에게 눈을 뜨고

to see what's in front of us

우리 앞에 있는 것을 보고

and to act before we get trampled.

넘어지기 전에 행동할 힘을 줄 것입니다.
