I grew up white, secular and middle class

That meant watching fireworks on the Fourth of July,

But by the time those traditions got to me,

they were hollow, commercial enterprises,

which just left me feeling empty.

So from a relatively young age,

I found myself looking to fill an existential hole,

to connect with something bigger than myself.

There hadn't been a bar mitzvah in my family in over a century,

so I thought I'd take a shot at that --

그래서 제가 한 번 해보려고 했죠.

only to be devastated when my one encounter with the rabbi,

a really tall, godlike figure with flowing white hair,

정말 키가 크고, 신과 같은 모습에 흰머리가 풍성한 분이었죠.

consisted of him asking me for my middle name

제 중간 이름을 알려 달라고 하셨어요.

so we could fill out a form.

신청서 빈칸을 채워야 했거든요.

Yep, that was it.

네, 그게 끝이었어요.

(Laughter)

So I got the fountain pen,

그래서 만년필을 받았죠.

but I didn't get the sense of belonging and confidence

하지만 여전히 제가 찾고 있던 소속감이나 어떤 확신을

I was searching for.

얻을 수가 없었어요.

Many years later,

세월이 흐르고 나서

I couldn't bear the thought of my son turning 13

제 아들이 어떤 성년식도 없이

without some kind of rite of passage.

13살이 되는 걸 참을 수 없었어요.

So I came up with the idea of a 13th birthday trip,

그래서 13세 생일 축하 여행을 가기로 했어요.

and I offered to take Murphy anywhere in the world

머피에게 이 세상 어디든 특별하게 생각하는 곳으로

that had meaning for him.

A budding young naturalist who loved turtles,

he immediately settled on the Galapagos.

And when my daughter, Katie, turned 13,

she and I spent two weeks at the bottom of the Grand Canyon,

where Katie learned for the first time that she was powerful and brave.

Since then, my partner, Ashton, and lots of our friends and relatives

have taken their kids on 13th birthday trips,

with everyone finding it transformative for both the child and the parent.

I wasn't brought up saying grace.

제 부모님은 식전기도를 하지 않았어요.

But for the last 20 years,

we've been holding hands before every meal.

It's a beautiful bit of shared silence

that brings us all together in the moment.

Ashton tells everyone to "pass the squeeze,"

So recently, when my family asked me

if I could please do something with the more than 250 boxes of stuff

that I've collected over a lifetime,

my ritual-making impulse kicked in.

I started wondering if I could go further than simple death cleaning.

혹시 단순한 "죽음 청소" 말고 뭔가 더 할 수 없을지 궁금해졌죠.

"Death cleaning" is the Swedish term for clearing out your closets,

"죽음 청소"란 스웨덴에서 온 말인데 죽기 전에 옷장을 싹 치우고

your basement and your attic before you die,

지하실이나 다락방의 짐도 싹 치우는 걸 말해요.

so your kids don't have to do it later.

자녀들이 나중에 치울 필요가 없도록 말이죠.

(Laughter)

I pictured my children opening up box after box

제 아이들이 상자들을 여는 모습을 상상해 봤어요.

and wondering why I'd kept any of that stuff.

"이런 걸 대체 왜 놔두신 거지?" 라고 궁금해 할 거예요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And then I imagined them looking at a specific picture

그리고 특별한 사진을 찾아내는 모습도 상상해봤어요.

of me with a beautiful young woman,

저와 아름다운 아가씨가 찍힌 사진을 발견하고

and asking, "Who on earth is that with Dad?"

"이 여자는 대체 누구야?" 라고 궁금해하는 거죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And that was the aha moment.

그 순간 좋은 생각이 팟! 떠올랐어요.

It wasn't the things I'd saved that were important;

중요했던 건 제가 모아놓은 물건들이 아니라

it was the stories that went with them that gave them meaning.

물건에 특별한 의미를 주는, 그 물건에 담긴 이야기였죠.

Could using the objects to tell the stories

이 물건들을 이용해서 거기 담긴 이야기를 나누는 것이

be the seed of a new ritual,

새로운 의식이 될 수 없을까?

a rite of passage -- not for a 13-year-old,

특별한 의식, 13살 생일을 위한 것이 아니라

but for someone much further down the road?

훨씬 더 오래 산 사람을 위한 의식인 거죠.

So I started experimenting.

그래서 실험을 시작했어요.

I got a few dozen things out of the boxes,

상자에서 물건을 여러 개 꺼내서

I put them about in a room,

방 하나에 쭉 놓아두고

and I invited people to come in

사람들을 그곳으로 초대했죠.

and ask me about anything that they found interesting.

그리고 궁금한게 있으면 뭐든지 물어보라고 했어요.

The results were terrific.

결과는 아주 놀라웠어요.

A good story became a launching pad for a much deeper discussion,

좋은 이야기 하나가 훨씬 더 깊은 주제에 관한 토론으로 이어졌죠.

in which my visitors made meaningful connections

이런 이야기는 손님들 각자의 삶과 의미있게 연결되기 시작했어요.

to their own lives.

Derrius [Quarles] asked me about a Leonard Peltier T-shirt

데리우스는 저에게 레너드 펠티어 티셔츠에 관해 물었죠.

that I'd worn a lot in the '80s,

제가 80년대에 즐겨 입던 옷이에요.

that, sadly, is still relevant today.

Our conversation moved quickly,

from a large number of political prisoners in American jails,

to Derrius wondering about the legacy

of the Black Liberation Movement of the '60s,

and how his life might be different if he'd come of age then,

또 만약 그 시대에 태어났다면 삶이 어떻게 달랐을지 궁금해했어요.

instead of 30-odd years later.

지금처럼 30몇 년 뒤가 아니라요.

At the end of our conversation,

우리 대화가 끝날 때 쯤

Derrius asked me if he could have the T-shirt.

데리우스는 티셔츠를 가져도 되냐고 물었어요.

And giving it to him felt just about perfect.

티셔츠를 주고 나니 뭔가 완벽한 느낌이 들었어요.

As these conversations established common ground,

이런 대화로 우리는 서로 공감대를 형성했어요.

especially across generations,

특히 세대를 넘나들면서 말이죠.

I realized I was opening a space

저는 서로에게 정말 중요한 일을

for people to talk about things that really mattered to them.

함께 이야기할 공간을 제가 만들었다는 걸 깨달았어요.

And I started seeing myself with a renewed sense of purpose --

그리고 새로운 목적 의식을 갖게 됐죠.

not as the old guy on the way out,

인생의 막바지에 다다른 노인이 아니라

but as someone with a role to play

앞으로 나아갈 역할을 맡은 한 사람으로서요.

going forward.

When I was growing up,

제가 어릴 때는

life ended for most people in their 70s.

평균 수명이 70대 정도였어요.

People are living far longer now,

지금은 훨씬 기대 수명이 길죠.

and for the first time in human history,

그리고 인류 역사상 처음으로

it's common for four generations to be living side by side.

4세대가 함께 살 수 있는 세상이 됐어요.

I'm 71,

저는 71세입니다.

and with a bit of luck,

약간 운이 좋다면

I've got 20 or 30 more years ahead of me.

앞으로 20~30년을 더 살 수 있죠.

Giving away my stuff now

제 물건을 남에게 주고

and sharing it with friends, family, and I hope strangers, too,

친구나 가족, 가능하면 낯선 사람과도 이야기를 공유하게 되는 것이

seems like the perfect way to enter this next stage of my life.

제 인생의 다음 단계로 진입하는 완벽한 방법이 될 것 같아요.

Turns out to be just what I was looking for:

a ritual that's less about dying

죽어가는 것에 대한 의식이라기 보다는

and more about opening the door

인생의 새로운 문을 여는 의식이에요.

to whatever comes next.
