Music has always been a big part of my life.

To create and to perform music

connects you to people countries and lifetimes away.

It connects you to the people you're playing with,

to your audience

and to yourself.

When I'm happy, when I'm sad,

楽しいとき 悲しいとき

when I'm bored, when I'm stressed,

I listen to and I create music.

When I was younger, I played piano;

子供の頃にピアノを始め

later, I took up guitar.

後にギターを 弾くようになりました

And as I started high school,

高校生になると

音楽は私のアイデンティティの 一部となりました

music became a part of my identity.

I was in every band,

バンドというバンドに加わり

I was involved with every musical fine arts event.

音楽のイベントには みんな参加しました

Music surrounded me.

It made me who I was,

and it gave me a place to belong.

居場所を与えてくれたのです

Now, I've always had this thing with rhythms.

私はリズムというものに ずっと惹かれていました

I remember being young,

小さな頃

I would walk down the hallways of my school

学校の廊下を歩きながら

and I would tap rhythms to myself on my leg with my hands,

よくリズムを 取っていたものです

脚を手で叩いたり 歯を鳴らしたりして

or tapping my teeth.

It was a nervous habit,

神経質な癖ですけど

私はいつも神経質だったんです

and I was always nervous.

I think I liked the repetition of the rhythm --

リズムの繰り返しが 好きだったんだと思います

it was calming.

落ち着いたんです

Then in high school,

それから高校の授業で

I started music theory,

音楽理論を習い始めましたが

and it was the best class I've ever taken.

それは私にとって 最高の授業でした

We were learning about music --

音楽について 知らなかったことを色々学びました

things I didn't know, like theory and history.

理論とか 歴史とか

It was a class where we basically just listened to a song,

その授業では基本的には ただ曲を聴き

talked about what it meant to us

and analyzed it,

and figured out what made it tick.

Every Wednesday, we did something called "rhythmic dictation,"

and I was pretty good at it.

Our teacher would give us an amount of measures

and a time signature,

and then he would speak a rhythm to us

and we would have to write it down with the proper rests and notes.

And I loved it.

The simplicity of the rhythm --

リズムのシンプルさ

a basic two- to four- measure line --

簡単な２〜４小節のものでありながら

and yet each of them almost told a story,

それぞれが物語を 語っているようで

like they had so much potential,

すごく大きな可能性があって

あとやるべきなのは メロディを加えることだけです

and all you had to do was add a melody.

Rhythms set a foundation for melodies and harmonies to play on top of.

リズムが作る基礎の上で メロディやハーモニーが戯れます

It gives structure and stability.

リズムが構造と安定性を 与えるのです

Now, music has these parts --

音楽には

リズムと メロディと ハーモニーがあって

rhythm, melody and harmony --

just like our lives.

まるで私たちの人生のよう

Where music has rhythm,

音楽のリズムにあたるのは

we have routines and habits --

日課や習慣です

things that help us to remember what to do and to stay on track,

すべきことを思い出させ

物事が順調に進むようにします

and to just keep going.

気付かないかもしれませんが

And you may not notice it,

but it's always there.

それはいつでも そこにあるのです

And it may seem simple,

それ自体はシンプルで

it may seem dull by itself,

退屈に見えるかもしれませんが

but it gives tempo and heartbeat.

それがテンポと拍を 与えてくれるんです

And then things in your life add on to it,

それから その上にくる 人生の物事があって

giving texture --

風合いを加えます

that's your friends and your family,

友達であったり 家族であったり

and anything that creates a harmonic structure in your life

自分の人生や歌に

調和した構造を作り出すもの

and in your song,

like harmonies,

ハーモニー

cadences

カデンツ

and anything that makes it polyphonic.

何であれ多声的にするもの

And they create beautiful chords and patterns.

それが美しい和音や パターンを生み出します

And then there's you.

それから自分がきます

You play on top of everything else,

すべての上で奏でるんです

on top of the rhythms and the beat

リズムやビートの上で—

because you're the melody.

自分というのはメロディだから

And things may change and develop,

物事は変化し 展開するかもしれませんが

どんなことをしようとも

but no matter what we do,

we're still the same people.

自分というのは 同じ人間なんです

Throughout a song melodies develop,

but it's still the same song.

No matter what you do,

the rhythms are still there:

リズムはずっとそこにあるんです

the tempo and the heartbeat ...

去ってしまうまでは

until I left,

and I went to college

大学に行くと

and everything disappeared.

すべて消えてしまいました

When I first arrived at university,

最初に大学に行ったとき

I felt lost.

迷子になったように感じました

And don't get me wrong -- sometimes I loved it and it was great,

時には楽しいこともあり 素晴らしかったんですが

but other times,

そうでないときには

I felt like I had been left alone

取り残されたように感じました

to fend for myself.

自力でどうにか やっていくようにと

It's like I had been taken out of my natural environment,

自分にとって自然な環境から 連れ出され

and put somewhere new,

何か新しい

where the rhythms and the harmonies

リズムもハーモニーも

and the form had gone away,

形式もない場所で

and it was just me --

ただひとり

silence and my melody.

沈黙と 自分のメロディがあるだけ

And even that began to waver,

それさえも揺らぎ始めました

because I didn't know what I was doing.

自分で何をやっているのか 分からなかったから

I didn't have any chords to structure myself,

自分に構造を与える和音も

or a rhythm

テンポを知るための

or a beat to know the tempo.

And then I began to hear all these other sounds.

And they were off-time

and off-key.

And the more I was around them,

the more my melody started to sound like theirs.

And slowly I began to lose myself,

like I was being washed away.

But then the next moment --

I could hear it.

And I could feel it.

感じることができたんです

And it was me.

それは私でした

And I was here.

私がそこにいたんです

And it was different,

違ってはいても

but not worse off.

悪くなっていたわけではなく

Just changed a little.

ただ少し変わっていました

Music is my way of coping with the changes in my life.

音楽は私が人生の変化と 折り合う方法です

There's a beautiful connection between music and life.

音楽と人生の間には 美しい繋がりがあります

It can bind us to reality

現実と繋げると同時に

at the same time it allows us to escape it.

現実から逃れられるようにも してくれます

Music is something that lives inside of you.

音楽は自分の中に 生きているものです

You create it and you're created by it.

自分が音楽を作り 音楽が自分を作るのです

Our lives are not only conducted by music,

人生は音楽に 導かれるだけでなく

they're also composed of it.

音楽で作られもするんです

So this may seem like a bit of a stretch,

but hear me out:

どうか最後まで聞いてください

music is a fundamental part of what we are

音楽は私たち自身と

and of everything around us.

Now, music is my passion,

but physics also used to be an interest of mine.

物理にも興味がありました

And the more I learned,

学べば学ぶほど

the more I saw connections between the two --

音楽と物理に 繋がりがあるのが分かりました

especially regarding string theory.

とくに超弦理論には

これは沢山ある理論の １つに過ぎませんが

I know this is only one of many theories,

but it spoke to me.

私に訴えるものがあったんです

So, one aspect of string theory, at its simplest form, is this:

超弦理論というのは すごく単純に言うと こうです

物質を作っているのは 原子であり

matter is made up of atoms,

which are made up of protons and neutrons and electrons,

原子を作っているのは 陽子と中性子と電子で

which are made up of quark.

それを作っているのがクォーク

And here's where the string part comes in.

変わっているのはその先です

This quark is supposedly made up of little coiled strings,

このクォークというのは 小さな螺旋状の弦からできていて

and it's the vibrations of these strings that make everything what it is.

その弦の振動によって すべてのものは決まっているのです

Michio Kaku once explained this

ミチオ・カクが 「宇宙入門」の講義の中で

in a lecture called, "The Universe in a Nutshell,"

where he says,

"String theory is the simple idea

that the four forces of the universe --

In this lecture, he goes on to explain physics

as the laws of harmony between these strings;

chemistry, as the melodies you can play on these strings;

and he states that the universe is a "symphony of strings."

These strings dictate the universe;

they make up everything we see and everything we know.

They're musical notes,

but they make us what we are and they hold us together.

So you see,

everything is music.

When I look at the world,

I see music all around us.

When I look at myself,

I see music.

And my life has been defined by music.

I found myself through music.

私は音楽を通して 自分を見いだしました

Music is everywhere,

音楽はどこにでもあり

and it is in everything.

すべての中にあります

And it changes and it builds

音楽は変化し 高まり

弱まります

and it diminishes.

But it's always there,

でも音楽はいつもそこにあり

supporting us,

私たちを支え

connecting us to each other

互いを結び合わせ

and showing us the beauty of the universe.

宇宙の美を見せてくれます

So if you ever feel lost,

だから道を見失ったときには

stop and listen for your song.

立ち止まって 自分の音楽に耳を傾けてください
