It began with one question:

If Africa was a bar, what would your country be drinking or doing?

I kicked it off with a guess about South Africa,

which wasn't exactly according to the rules

because South Africa's not my country.

But alluding to the country's continual attempts

しかし 数十年にも渡る アパルトヘイトによる荒廃の後に

to build a postracial society

人種差別のない社会を構築しようと たゆまぬ努力を

after being ravaged for decades by apartheid,

続けている南アフリカに言及して こうツイートしました

I tweeted, #ifafricawasabar South Africa would be drinking all kinds of alcohol

#もしアフリカがバーなら 南アフリカは全種類のお酒を飲んで

and begging them to get along in its stomach.

「胃の中で皆うまくやってね」と 願うでしょう

And then I waited.

それから 待ってみました

And then I had that funny feeling where I wondered if I crossed the line.

私は「やりすぎたかな」と なんだか落ち着かなくなり

So, I sent out a few other tweets about my own country

自分の国と 馴染みのある国々に関するツイートを

and a few other African countries I'm familiar with.

他にも いくつか送信してみました

And then I waited again,

そうして再び待ちました

but this time

でも今度は

I read through almost every tweet I had ever tweeted

自分の全てのツイートに ざっと目を通しました

to convince myself,

納得する為に―

no, to remind myself that I'm really funny

いえ ダメ押しをする為です ―本当に面白いんだって

and that if nobody gets it, that's fine.

誰も分かってくれなくても それはそれで良いと思いました

But luckily,

しかしラッキーな事に

I didn't have to do that for very long.

そんなに 長く待たずにすみました

Very soon, people were participating.

間もなく 皆がツイートして来たのです

In fact, by the end of that week in July,

実際 ７月のその週の終わりまでには

the hashtag #ifafricawasabar

ハッシュタグ #IfAfricaWasABar が

would have garnered around 60,000 tweets,

集めた約６万のツイートは

lit up the continent

大陸を輝やかせ

and made its way to publications all over the world.

世界中に広まっていったのです

People were using the hashtag to do many different things.

To poke fun at their stereotypes:

To criticize government spending:

To make light of geopolitical tensions:

with serious anger management issues.]

To remind us that even in Africa

アフリカには 存在を忘れられた

there are some countries we don't know exist:

who nobody really knows but is always in the pictures.]

And also to make fun of the countries that don't think that they're in Africa:

And to note the countries that had made a big turnaround:

that comes with no money and no transport but leaves drunk, happy and rich]

お金も何もない女の子だったけど 飲んでハッピーでリッチになった ]

But most importantly,

しかし 何より重要なことは

people were using the hashtag to connect.

このハッシュタグを使って 皆が繋がっていたのです

People were connecting over their Africanness.

自分のアフリカを超えたところで 繋がっていました

So for one week in July,

７月の１週間

Twitter became a real African bar.

ツイッターは 本物の「アフリカのバー」になりました

And I was really thrilled,

本当にワクワクしました

mainly because I realized that Pan-Africanism could work,

汎アフリカ主義って こういうことかも と気づいたからです

that we had before us, between us, at our fingertips

私達の前、私達の間、私達の指先には プラットフォームがすでにあり

a platform that just needed a small spark

あとはほんの小さな火花だけで 私達の中にある

to light in us a hunger for each other.

My name is Siyanda Mohutsiwa,

I'm 22 years old

22歳で

and I am Pan-Africanist by birth.

生まれながらの汎アフリカ主義者です

Now, I say I'm Pan-Africanist by birth

さて そう断言するのも

because my parents are from two different African countries.

両親がアフリカの 異なる二つの国の出身だからです

My father's from a country called Botswana in southern Africa.

父はボツワナという ドイツよりほんの少し大きな

It's only slightly bigger than Germany.

アフリカ南部の国の出身です

This year we celebrate our 50th year of stable democracy.

今年 民主化50周年を祝っており

And it has some very progressive social policies.

非常に進歩的な政策を持っています

My mother's country is the Kingdom of Swaziland.

母はスワジランド王国―

It's a very, very small country, also in southern Africa.

同じアフリカ南部にある とても小さな国の出身で

It is Africa's last complete monarchy.

そこはアフリカ最後の 完全な君主国家です

So it's been ruled by a king and a royal family

王と王室によって 伝統に基づき

in line with their tradition,

非常に長い間

for a very long time.

支配され続けてきました

On paper, these countries seem very different.

制度だけ見ると この二つの国は 大変異なっています

And when I was a kid, I could see the difference.

子どもの頃 私は 両国の違いに気づいていました

It rained a lot in one country, it didn't rain quite as much in the other.

一方の国では雨が多いのですが もう一方はそれ程ではありません

But outside of that, I didn't really realize

しかしそれ以外には 両親が違う国の出身という事が

why it mattered that my parents were from two different places.

何故 重要なのかを 本当には分かっていませんでした

But it would go on to have a very peculiar effect on me.

それは私に とても独特の影響を与え続けました

You see, I was born in one country

私は一方の国で産まれ

and raised in the other.

もう一方の国で育ちました

When we moved to Botswana,

家族でボツワナに引っ越した時

I was a toddler who spoke fluent SiSwati

私はスワジ語を流暢に話し 他の言葉は

and nothing else.

話せない子どもでした

So I was being introduced to my new home,

そこで自分の新たな故郷や

my new cultural identity,

新たな文化的アイデンティティに

as a complete outsider,

完全な他所者として 引き合わされました

incapable of comprehending anything that was being said to me

家族や国に言われていること 私が取り組むべき伝統など

by the family and country whose traditions I was meant to move forward.

何も理解することが出来ないまま―

But very soon, I would shed SiSwati.

しかし間もなく 私はスワジ語を捨てました

And when I would go back to Swaziland,

スワジランドに戻ると

I would be constantly confronted by how very non-Swazi I was becoming.

スワジ人でなくなっていく自分との 葛藤が絶えませんでした

Add to that my entry into Africa's private school system,

それに加えて 生徒の 「アフリカらしさ」をなくすことが目的の

whose entire purpose is to beat the Africanness out of you,

私立学校に入学したことにより

and I would have a very peculiar adolescence.

私は非常に特異な 思春期を送りました

But I think that my interest in ideas of identity was born here,

しかし私の「アイデンティティという 概念への興味」はここで生まれたと思います

in the strange intersection of belonging to two places at once

一度に２つの場所に属する 奇妙な交差点で―

but not really belonging to either one very well

どちらかに 完全に属するという訳でもなく

and belonging to this vast space in between and around simultaneously.

I became obsessed with the idea of a shared African identity.

「アフリカ全体に共通する１つのアイデンティティ」 という概念に取り憑かれるようになりました

Since then, I have continued to read about politics

以来 政治、地理、 アイデンティティに関する

and geography and identity and what all those things mean.

本を読みあさり それらが意味することを調べ続けました

I've also held on to a deep curiosity about African philosophies.

同時に アフリカの哲学に関する 深い興味を持ち続けていました

When I began to read,

本を読み始めた時

I gravitated towards the works of black intellectuals

黒人知識層の活動に 惹きつけられました

like Steve Biko and Frantz Fanon,

スティーブ・ビーコや フランツ・ファノンといった人達です

who tackled complex ideas

彼らは植民地独立運動や 黒人の社会意識といった

like decolonization and black consciousness.

複雑な問題に 取り組んでいました

And when I thought, at 14, that I had digested these grand ideas,

I moved on to the speeches of iconic African statesmen

私はアフリカの象徴的な政治家の スピーチを聞く事にしました

like Burkina Faso's Thomas Sankara

and Congo's Patrice Lumumba.

コンゴのパトリス・ルムンバです

I read every piece of African fiction that I could get my hands on.

また入手可能な限りのあらゆる アフリカのフィクションを読みました

So when Twitter came,

ツイッターが利用可能になった時

I hopped on with the enthusiasm of a teenage girl

私は10代の少女の熱狂とともに そこに飛び込みました

whose friends are super, super bored of hearing about all this random stuff.

友人たちは 延々と続く私の話を聞くのに 心底うんざりしていたのです

The year was 2011

2011年のことでした

and all over southern Africa and the whole continent,

南アフリカ全土とアフリカ大陸では

affordable data packages for smartphones and Internet surfing

スマホやネットサーフィンをするのに 手頃なデータプランが

became much easier to get.

手に入れやすくなったので

So my generation, we were sending messages to each other on this platform

私たちの世代はこのプラットフォームで メッセージを送り合いました

that just needed 140 characters and a little bit of creativity.

わずか140文字とほんの少しの 創造力さえあれば良いのですから

On long commutes to work,

長い通勤の間や

in lectures that some of us should have been paying attention to,

集中しなければならないはずの 講義中や

on our lunch breaks,

ランチの休憩時間などに

we would communicate as much as we could

私達は出来るだけ沢山 やり取りをしました

about the everyday realities of being young and African.

アフリカの若者であるという 日々の現実についてを

But of course, this luxury was not available to everybody.

しかし勿論 この贅沢品を誰もが 入手出来る訳ではありませんでした

So this meant that if you were a teenage girl in Botswana

つまり もし皆さんがボツワナの 10代の少女で

and you wanted to have fun on the Internet,

インターネット上で 楽しみたいとしたら

one, you had to tweet in English.

１つ 英語でツイートしなければなりません

Two, you had to follow more than just the three other people you knew online.

２つ オンラインで知り合いの３人だけを フォローするだけではダメなのです

You had to follow South Africans, Zimbabweans, Ghanaians, Nigerians.

南アフリカ、ジンバブエ、ガーナ、 ナイジェリアの人をフォローしなくては

And suddenly, your whole world opened up.

そうすると 突然世界が開けるのです

And my whole world did open up.

私の世界も本当に開かれました

I followed vibrant Africans who were travelling around the continent,

私は大陸を旅して巡る アフリカ人たちをフォローしました

taking pictures of themselves

彼らは自分たちの写真を撮り

and posting them under the hashtag #myafrica.

ハッシュタグ #MyAfricaをつけて 投稿していました

Because at that time,

なぜかというと 当時は

if you were to search Africa on Twitter or on Google

ツイッター、Google あらゆるソーシャルメディアで

or any kind of social media,

「アフリカ」と検索すれば

you would think that the entire continent was just pictures of animals

大陸中どこでも 動物の写真や リゾートホテルでカクテルを飲む

and white guys drinking cocktails in hotel resorts.

白人の画像しか出てこないような 状態でした

(Laughter)

（笑）

But Africans were using this platform

しかしアフリカ人たちは このプラットフォームを使うことで

to take some kind of ownership of the tourism sectors.

観光の分野において ある種の所有権を獲得しました

It was Africans taking selfies on the beaches of Nigeria.

それはナイジェリアのビーチで 自撮りするアフリカ人だったり

It was Africans in cocktail bars in Nairobi.

ナイロビのカクテルバーにいる アフリカ人でした

And these were the same Africans that I began to meet

それは私自身が大陸中を旅して

in my own travels around the continent.

出会うようになった アフリカ人と同じでした

We would discuss African literature, politics, economic policy.

私達はアフリカの文学、政治、 経済政策について議論し合いました

But almost invariably, every single time,

しかし殆ど決まって いつも

we would end up discussing Twitter.

最後にはツイッターの議論になりました

And that's when I realized what this was.

その時 私はこれだと思ったのです

We were standing in the middle of something amazing,

私達は何か素晴らしいものの ど真ん中に立っている気分でした

because for the first time ever

何故なら その時初めて

young Africans could discuss the future of our continent in real time,

アフリカの若者達がリアルタイムで 自分達の大陸の未来を

without the restriction of borders, finances and watchful governments.

国境、財政、監視の厳しい政府などの 制約を受けずに議論する事が出来たからであり

Because the little known truth is

あまり知られていないのですが

many Africans know a lot less about other African countries

アフリカの多くの人々は 全体的に 欧米人よりも遥かに

than some Westerners might know about Africa as a whole.

アフリカの事を知らない という現実があったからです

This is by accident,

これは偶然に

but sometimes, it's by design.

しかし時折 故意に起こっていました

For example, in apartheid South Africa,

例えば 南アフリカの アパルトヘイトの下

black South Africans were constantly being bombarded

南アフリカの黒人は 「黒人に支配された国は

with this message that any country ruled by black people

どこも失敗に向かう」 というメッセージを

was destined for failure.

常に投げつけられていました

And this was done to convince them

黒人にこう納得させる為に 政策は実行されました

that they were much better off under crushing white rule

「黒人の自由な国家の下よりも

than they were living in a black and free nation.

Add to that Africa's colonial, archaic education system,

さらに アフリカの植民地時代の 旧態然とした教育制度が

which has been unthinkingly carried over from the 1920s --

1920年代から 何も考えずに引き継がれたままでした

and at the age of 15, I could name all the various causes

15歳のとき 私は過去200年に ヨーロッパで起きた戦争の

of the wars that had happened in Europe in the past 200 years,

あらゆる様々な原因を 言う事が出来ましたが

but I couldn't name the president of my neighboring country.

隣国の大統領の名前は言えませんでした

And to me, this doesn't make any sense

私にとってそれは おかしなことなのです

because whether we like it or not,

何故なら 好むと好まざるとに拘わらず

the fates of African people are deeply intertwined.

アフリカの人々の運命は互いに 深く絡み合っているからです

When disaster hits, when turmoil hits,

災害が襲い混乱が生じた時

we share the consequences.

その結果は我々にも波及します

When Burundians flee political turmoil,

ブルンジ人が 政治の混乱から避難する際には

they go to us,

私達の国や

to other African countries.

他のアフリカの国々にやって来ます

Africa has six of the world's largest refugee centers.

アフリカには世界規模の 大きな難民避難所が６つあります

What was once a Burundian problem

かつてはブルンジの 問題であったものが

becomes an African problem.

アフリカの問題となるのです

So to me, there are no Sudanese problems

私にとってはスーダンの問題や 南アフリカや

or South African problems or Kenyan problems,

ケニアの問題など 存在しません

only African problems

それは皆アフリカの問題なのです

because eventually, we share the turmoil.

結局 私達が混乱を 分かち合っているからです

So if we share the problems,

私達が問題を共有し合うなら

why aren't we doing a better job of sharing the successes?

うまく成功を共有し合って行こう ではありませんか

How can we do that?

どうやってやれるのか？

Well, in the long term,

そうですね 長期的に

we can shoot towards increasing inter-African trade,

アフリカ大陸内の 貿易を増やすことを狙っていきましょう

removing borders and putting pressure on leaders

境界を取り除き 指導者に圧力をかけ

to fulfill regional agreements they've already signed.

既に署名された地域協定を 実現させるのです

But I think that the biggest way for Africa to share its successes

しかしアフリカが成功を共有する為の 最も重要な方法は

is to foster something I like to call social Pan-Africanism.

言うなれば「社会的汎アフリカ主義」を 促進する事です

Now, political Pan-Africanism already exists,

政治的な意味での汎アフリカ主義は 既に存在しています

so I'm not inventing anything totally new here.

ここで私は全く新たなものを 考案しているのではありません

But political Pan-Africanism

しかし政治的汎アフリカ主義は

is usually the African unity of the political elite.

常にアフリカにおける 政治エリートの集団です

And who does that benefit?

それが誰の為になるのでしょうか？

Well, African leaders, almost exclusively.

そうです ほぼアフリカの指導者の為だけです

No, what I'm talking about

そうではなく 私が話しているのは

is the Pan-Africanism of the ordinary African.

一般的なアフリカ人や 私のようなアフリカの若者にとっての

Young Africans like me,

汎アフリカ主義の事です

we are bursting with creative energy,

私達は創造的なエネルギーと 革新的な考えで一杯なのです

with innovative ideas.

私達は創造的なエネルギーと 革新的な考えで一杯なのです

But with bad governance and shaky institutions,

しかし悪しき統治や 当てにならない組織があると

all of this potential could go to waste.

その可能性の全ては 無駄になるでしょう

On a continent where more than a handful of leaders

ほんの一握りの指導者が

have been in power longer

人口の大多数の年齢よりも長い期間

than the majority of the populations has been alive,

勢力を持ち続ける大陸に於いては

we are in desperate need of something new,

新たな何か、機能する何かが

something that works.

渇望されています

And I think that thing is social Pan-Africanism.

それが 社会的汎アフリカ主義だと思うのです

My dream is that young Africans

私の夢はこうです 境界や状況のせいで アフリカの革新が

stop allowing borders and circumstance to suffocate our innovation.

息を止めるような事態を アフリカの若者たちがもう許さないこと

My dream is that when a young African comes up with something brilliant,

私の夢はアフリカの若者が 素晴らしい何かを思いついた時に

they don't say, "Well, this wouldn't work in my country,"

こう言わない事です 「んー それは自分達の国では無理だ」

and then give up.

そうやって諦めに入るからです

My dream is that young Africans begin to realize

私の夢はアフリカの若者が 気づき始める事です

that the entire continent is our canvas, is our home.

アフリカ全土は私達のカンバス 私たちの故郷なのだと―

Using the Internet, we can begin to think collaboratively,

インターネットを使って私達は共同で 考え始める事が出来ます

we can begin to innovate together.

一緒に革新し始められるのです

In Africa, we say, "If you want to go fast, you go alone,

アフリカでは こう言います 「早く行きたければ一人で行け

but if you want to go far, you go together."

しかし遠くへ行きたければ 一緒に行け」と

And I believe that social Pan-Africanism is how we can go far together.

社会的汎アフリカ主義は いかに一緒に 遠くへ行けるかだと思っています

And this is already happening.

そしてそれは既に始まっています

Access to these online networks has given young Africans

これらのオンラインネットワークに アクセスすれば

something we've always had to violently take: a voice.

無理に奪い取らねばならなかった声を アフリカの若者達に届けられるでしょう

We now have a platform.

今 私達にはプラットフォームがあります

Before now, if you wanted to hear from the youth in Africa,

それ以前は アフリカの若者の声を聞きたければ

you waited for the 65-year-old minister of youth --

65歳の青少年担当大臣から 伺っていたのです

(Laughter)

to wake up in the morning,

彼は朝目覚めると

take his heartburn medication

まず胸やけの薬を飲み

and then tell you the plans he has for your generation

若い世代向けに用意した 20年前と変わらぬプランを

in 20 years time.

語るのです

Before now, if you wanted to be heard by your possibly tyrannical government,

今までは 何とかして 暴君のような政治の事を訴えたければ

you were pushed to protest, suffer the consequences

抗議運動を強いられ その影響を被り

and have your fingers crossed

どこかの欧米の新聞が

that some Western paper somewhere might make someone care.

自分達に気づいてくれますようにと 祈るしかありませんでした

But now we have opportunities to back each other up

しかし今 私達は これまでにない方法で

in ways we never could before.

互いを支え合う機会が 持てるようになりました

We support South African students

私達は馬鹿高い学費に抗議し

who are marching against ridiculously high tertiary fees.

デモ行進をする 南アフリカの学生達や

We support Zimbabwean women who are marching to parliament.

議会までデモ行進する ジンバブエの女性達や

We support Angolan journalists who are being illegally detained.

不法に勾留されたアンゴラの ジャーナリスト達を支援しています

For the first time ever,

これまでで 初めて

African pain and African aspiration

アフリカの痛みや切望は

has the ability to be witnessed

それを最も切実に 訴えられる人々によって

by those who can empathize with it the most:

証言出来るものになっています

other Africans.

それは他のアフリカ人です

I believe that with a social Pan-Africanist thinking

１人の社会的汎アフリカ主義者が

and using the Internet as a tool,

インターネットをツールにし 考えながら

we can begin to rescue each other,

私達は互いを 救済し始められるようになり

and ultimately, to rescue ourselves.

最終的には自分達自身を 助けるのだと信じています
