It began with one question:

But alluding to the country's continual attempts

after being ravaged for decades by apartheid,

and begging them to get along in its stomach.

And then I waited.

그리고 기다렸습니다.

And then I had that funny feeling where I wondered if I crossed the line.

그런데 제가 선을 넘은 건 아닐까 하는 이상한 기분이 들기 시작했습니다.

So, I sent out a few other tweets about my own country

그래서 우리나라에 대한 트윗을 몇 개 더 썼습니다.

and a few other African countries I'm familiar with.

제가 잘 아는 다른 아프리카 국가들도 몇 개 같이요.

And then I waited again,

그리고 또 기다렸습니다.

but this time

I read through almost every tweet I had ever tweeted

to convince myself,

no, to remind myself that I'm really funny

and that if nobody gets it, that's fine.

But luckily,

I didn't have to do that for very long.

Very soon, people were participating.

In fact, by the end of that week in July,

would have garnered around 60,000 tweets,

lit up the continent

and made its way to publications all over the world.

People were using the hashtag to do many different things.

To poke fun at their stereotypes:

To make light of geopolitical tensions:

with serious anger management issues.]

To remind us that even in Africa

아프리카에도 우리가 아직

there are some countries we don't know exist:

존재하는 줄도 모르는 나라가 있다는 걸 일깨워주기 위해서도요.

who nobody really knows but is always in the pictures.]

And also to make fun of the countries that don't think that they're in Africa:

And to note the countries that had made a big turnaround:

that comes with no money and no transport but leaves drunk, happy and rich]

But most importantly,

people were using the hashtag to connect.

People were connecting over their Africanness.

So for one week in July,

Twitter became a real African bar.

And I was really thrilled,

mainly because I realized that Pan-Africanism could work,

that we had before us, between us, at our fingertips

My name is Siyanda Mohutsiwa,

I'm 22 years old

and I am Pan-Africanist by birth.

모태 범아프리카주의자입니다.

Now, I say I'm Pan-Africanist by birth

모태 범아프리카주의자라고 말하는 이유는

because my parents are from two different African countries.

제 부모님이 다른 아프리카 국가 출신이시기 때문입니다.

My father's from a country called Botswana in southern Africa.

아빠는 아프리카 남부의 보츠와나 출신이십니다.

It's only slightly bigger than Germany.

독일보다 약간 더 큰 나라입니다.

This year we celebrate our 50th year of stable democracy.

올해는 안정적인 민주주의의 50주년을 축하하는 해입니다.

And it has some very progressive social policies.

매우 급진적인 사회 정책들도 있습니다.

My mother's country is the Kingdom of Swaziland.

제 어머니의 조국은 스와질란드입니다.

It's a very, very small country, also in southern Africa.

남아프리카에 있는 매우 작은 나라입니다.

It is Africa's last complete monarchy.

아프리카의 마지막 전제군주국이었어요.

So it's been ruled by a king and a royal family

in line with their tradition,

for a very long time.

On paper, these countries seem very different.

And when I was a kid, I could see the difference.

It rained a lot in one country, it didn't rain quite as much in the other.

But outside of that, I didn't really realize

why it mattered that my parents were from two different places.

But it would go on to have a very peculiar effect on me.

You see, I was born in one country

저는 태어난 국가와 자란 국가가 다릅니다.

and raised in the other.

When we moved to Botswana,

우리 가족이 보츠와나로 이사왔을 떄

I was a toddler who spoke fluent SiSwati

저는 시스와티어를 잘하는 아기일 뿐이었습니다.

and nothing else.

So I was being introduced to my new home,

저는 완전히 외부인인 채로

my new cultural identity,

as a complete outsider,

incapable of comprehending anything that was being said to me

by the family and country whose traditions I was meant to move forward.

But very soon, I would shed SiSwati.

And when I would go back to Swaziland,

I would be constantly confronted by how very non-Swazi I was becoming.

Add to that my entry into Africa's private school system,

whose entire purpose is to beat the Africanness out of you,

and I would have a very peculiar adolescence.

But I think that my interest in ideas of identity was born here,

in the strange intersection of belonging to two places at once

but not really belonging to either one very well

and belonging to this vast space in between and around simultaneously.

I became obsessed with the idea of a shared African identity.

저는 아프리카인의 공통적 자아에 빠져들었습니다.

Since then, I have continued to read about politics

그 때부터 정치와 지리, 자아와 이것들의 의미에 대해

and geography and identity and what all those things mean.

끊임없이 읽기 시작했습니다.

I've also held on to a deep curiosity about African philosophies.

아프리카 철학에 대해서도 깊은 호기심을 가졌습니다.

When I began to read,

읽기를 시작했을 때 저는 흑인 지성인들의 글에 끌렸습니다.

I gravitated towards the works of black intellectuals

like Steve Biko and Frantz Fanon,

탈식민지화와 흑인 의식처럼

who tackled complex ideas

복잡한 사상에 대해서 쓴

like decolonization and black consciousness.

스티브 비코와 프란츠 파농같은 지성인들의 글에요.

And when I thought, at 14, that I had digested these grand ideas,

14살에 위대한 사상들을 다 이해했다고 생각했을 땐

I moved on to the speeches of iconic African statesmen

부르키나파소의 토마스 상카라나 콩고의 파트리스 루뭄바같은

like Burkina Faso's Thomas Sankara

상징적인 아프리카 정치인의

and Congo's Patrice Lumumba.

연설로 옮겨갔습니다.

I read every piece of African fiction that I could get my hands on.

구할 수 있는 아프리카 소설은 전부 다 읽었습니다.

So when Twitter came,

그래서 트위터가 생겨났을 때

I hopped on with the enthusiasm of a teenage girl

이런 중구난방의 소재에 대해 듣는 걸 지루해하는 친구를 가진

whose friends are super, super bored of hearing about all this random stuff.

여느 십대 소녀와 같은 열성으로 동참했습니다.

The year was 2011

그 때가 2011년이었습니다.

and all over southern Africa and the whole continent,

남아공 전체와 아프리카 전 대륙에서

affordable data packages for smartphones and Internet surfing

스마트폰과 인터넷 검색을 위한

적당한 가격의 데이터 요금제를 쓰는 게 더 쉬워졌었습니다.

became much easier to get.

So my generation, we were sending messages to each other on this platform

그래서 140자와 약간의 창의력만 필요했던 이 공간에서

that just needed 140 characters and a little bit of creativity.

제 세대는 서로 메시지를 주고받았습니다.

On long commutes to work,

출근길에도,

in lectures that some of us should have been paying attention to,

집중해야 하는 수업시간에도

on our lunch breaks,

점심시간에도

we would communicate as much as we could

젊은 아프리카인으로 사는 현실에 대해

about the everyday realities of being young and African.

최대한 많이 이야기했습니다.

But of course, this luxury was not available to everybody.

물론 이런 사치가 모두에게 허용된 건 아니었습니다.

So this meant that if you were a teenage girl in Botswana

보츠와나에 사는 십대 소녀는

and you wanted to have fun on the Internet,

인터넷에서 놀고 싶으면

one, you had to tweet in English.

첫째로 영어로 트윗을 올려야했고

Two, you had to follow more than just the three other people you knew online.

둘째로는 온라인상에서 아는 사람들을 세 명 이상 팔로우해야 했습니다.

You had to follow South Africans, Zimbabweans, Ghanaians, Nigerians.

짐바브웨인, 가나인, 나이지리아인, 남아공인을 팔로우해야 했습니다.

And suddenly, your whole world opened up.

그러면 한 순간에 세계가 눈 앞에 열렸습니다.

And my whole world did open up.

제 세계도 열렸습니다.

I followed vibrant Africans who were travelling around the continent,

저는 아프리카 대륙을 여행하면서 자신의 사진을 찍어서

taking pictures of themselves

'#내아프리카'를 달아서 올라는

and posting them under the hashtag #myafrica.

활기 넘치는 아프리카인들을 팔로우했습니다.

Because at that time,

왜냐하면 그 당시엔

if you were to search Africa on Twitter or on Google

아프리카를 구글이나 트위터나 소셜미디어에 치면

or any kind of social media,

동물 사진이나

you would think that the entire continent was just pictures of animals

호텔 리조트에서 칵테일을 마시는

and white guys drinking cocktails in hotel resorts.

백인들 사진밖에 안 나왔거든요,

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But Africans were using this platform

하지만 아프리카인들은 이 공간을

to take some kind of ownership of the tourism sectors.

관광 분야에 대한 주인의식을 갖는 데 쓰고 있었습니다.

It was Africans taking selfies on the beaches of Nigeria.

나이지리아 해변에서 아프리카인이 찍은 셀카였고

It was Africans in cocktail bars in Nairobi.

아프리카인이 나이로비의 칵테일 바에서 찍은 사진이었죠.

And these were the same Africans that I began to meet

제가 아프리카를 여행하면서 만난 사람들이 모두

in my own travels around the continent.

이런 사람들이었습니다.

We would discuss African literature, politics, economic policy.

우리는 아프리카의 문학, 정치, 경제정책에 관해 토론했스비다.

But almost invariably, every single time,

하지만 언제나 트위터 이야기는

we would end up discussing Twitter.

꼭 하게 되었습니다.

And that's when I realized what this was.

그 때 저는 이게 뭔지 깨달았습니다.

We were standing in the middle of something amazing,

우리는 무언가 굉장한 것의 한가운데에 서 있었습니다.

because for the first time ever

역사상 처음으로

young Africans could discuss the future of our continent in real time,

아프리카 청년들은 대륙의 미래에 대해 실시간으로 논의할 수 있었으니까요.

without the restriction of borders, finances and watchful governments.

국경이나 돈, 정부의 감시가 주는 제약 없이 말이죠.

Because the little known truth is

일부 서양인들이 아프리카 전체에 대해

many Africans know a lot less about other African countries

아는 것보다 많은 아프리카인들이 훨씬 더 아프리카 국가들에 대해

than some Westerners might know about Africa as a whole.

적게 알고 있다는 사실을 사람들은 모르고 있기 때문입니다.

This is by accident,

우연일 수도 있지만

but sometimes, it's by design.

어떤 경우에는 의도된 걸 수도 있습니다.

For example, in apartheid South Africa,

black South Africans were constantly being bombarded

with this message that any country ruled by black people

was destined for failure.

And this was done to convince them

that they were much better off under crushing white rule

than they were living in a black and free nation.

Add to that Africa's colonial, archaic education system,

거기에다 1920년대부터 맹목적으로 이어져 온

which has been unthinkingly carried over from the 1920s --

아프리카의 구식 식민지 교육까지 있었습니다.

and at the age of 15, I could name all the various causes

15살 때 저는 지난 200년간 유럽에서 일어났던

of the wars that had happened in Europe in the past 200 years,

전쟁의 원인을 모두 댈 수 있었지만

but I couldn't name the president of my neighboring country.

옆나라의 대통령 이름은 몰랐습니다.

And to me, this doesn't make any sense

저는 이게 이해가 되지 않았습니다.

because whether we like it or not,

우리가 좋든 싫든

the fates of African people are deeply intertwined.

아프리카인들의 운명은 깊숙히 얽혀 있으니까요.

When disaster hits, when turmoil hits,

재난이 닥치거나 혼란스러워지면

we share the consequences.

우린 같은 결과를 맞게 됩니다.

When Burundians flee political turmoil,

부룬디인들이 정치적 혼란에서 피난을 가게 되면

they go to us,

우리에게 오거나 다른 아프리카 국가로 갑니다.

to other African countries.

Africa has six of the world's largest refugee centers.

아프리카에는 세계에서 가장 큰 난민 수용소가 6개 있습니다.

What was once a Burundian problem

한때 부룬디인들만의 문제였던 것이

becomes an African problem.

아프리카 전체의 문제가 되죠.

So to me, there are no Sudanese problems

그래서 제겐, 수단의 문제나

or South African problems or Kenyan problems,

남아공의 문제나, 케냐의 문제라는 건 없습니다.

only African problems

아프리카의 문제만 있을 뿐이죠.

because eventually, we share the turmoil.

결국에는 혼란을 같이 겪게 되니까요.

So if we share the problems,

그러니까 우리가 문제를 같이 안고 있다면

why aren't we doing a better job of sharing the successes?

성공을 공유하는 일은 왜 잘 못하고 있는 걸까요?

How can we do that?

어떻게 해야 잘 할 수 있죠?

Well, in the long term,

장기적으로는

we can shoot towards increasing inter-African trade,

간아프리카 무역을 증대시키는 걸 목표로 삼을 수 있습니다.

removing borders and putting pressure on leaders

국경을 없애고 이미 체결된 지역 간 협약을 이행하라고

to fulfill regional agreements they've already signed.

지도자들에게 압력을 넣는거죠.

But I think that the biggest way for Africa to share its successes

하지만 제 생각에 성공을 공유하는 가장 큰 방법은

is to foster something I like to call social Pan-Africanism.

제가 범아프리카주의라 부르는 걸 함양시키는 것입니다.

Now, political Pan-Africanism already exists,

정치적 범아프리카주의는 이미 존재합니다.

so I'm not inventing anything totally new here.

그렇기 때문에 제가 완전히 새로운 걸 만드는 건 아닙니다.

But political Pan-Africanism

하지만 정치적 범아프리카주의는 대부분

is usually the African unity of the political elite.

정치 엘리트의 아프리카적 연합입니다.

And who does that benefit?

그게 누구한테 이득일까요?

Well, African leaders, almost exclusively.

거의 독점적으로 아프리카의 지도자들에게만입니다.

No, what I'm talking about

제가 말하는 건

is the Pan-Africanism of the ordinary African.

평범한 아프리카인들의 범아프리카주의입니다.

Young Africans like me,

저 같은 아프리카의 청년들은

we are bursting with creative energy,

창의적 에너지와 혁신적인 발상이 넘쳐납니다.

with innovative ideas.

But with bad governance and shaky institutions,

하지만 잘못된 통치와 불안정한 기관으로는

all of this potential could go to waste.

이 모든 가능성이 버려집니다.

On a continent where more than a handful of leaders

소수의 지도자가 다수의 인구가 살아있던 것보다

have been in power longer

더 오랫동안 집권한

than the majority of the populations has been alive,

아프리카 대륙에서 우리는

we are in desperate need of something new,

새로운 것이 절실하게 필요합니다.

something that works.

효과가 있는 무언가가요.

And I think that thing is social Pan-Africanism.

제가 보기엔 그게 사회적 범아프리카주의입니다.

My dream is that young Africans

제 꿈은 아프리카의 청년들이

stop allowing borders and circumstance to suffocate our innovation.

국경과 주변의 상황이 우리의 혁신을 가로막게 놔두지 않는 겁니다.

My dream is that when a young African comes up with something brilliant,

제 꿈은 아프리카의 청년이 무언가 기발한 것을 생각해냈을 때

they don't say, "Well, this wouldn't work in my country,"

"내 나라에서는 안 먹힐 거 같은데."라고 말하고

and then give up.

포기하지 않는 것입니다.

My dream is that young Africans begin to realize

제 꿈은 아프리카의 청년들이 전 대륙이 우리의 도화지이자

that the entire continent is our canvas, is our home.

집이라는 걸 깨닫기 시작하는 겁니다.

Using the Internet, we can begin to think collaboratively,

인터넷을 통해서 우리는 협동적으로 생각할 수 있습니다.

we can begin to innovate together.

같이 혁신을 이룰 수 있습니다.

In Africa, we say, "If you want to go fast, you go alone,

아프리카에는 이런 말이 있어요. "빨리 가고 싶으면 혼자 가라.

but if you want to go far, you go together."

하지만 멀리 가고 싶으면 같이 가라."

And I believe that social Pan-Africanism is how we can go far together.

저는 사회적 범아프리카주의가 함꼐 멀리 가는 방법이라 생각합니다.

And this is already happening.

이건 이미 일어나고 있습니다.

Access to these online networks has given young Africans

온라인 네트워크에의 접근성이 젊은 아프리카인들에게

something we've always had to violently take: a voice.

언제나 폭력을 통해 쟁취해야만 했던 걸 주었습니다. 목소리입니다.

We now have a platform.

우리에겐 이제 공동 공간이 있습니다.

Before now, if you wanted to hear from the youth in Africa,

예전에는 아프리카 청년들의 생각을 듣고 싶으면

you waited for the 65-year-old minister of youth --

65세의 청소년장관을 기다려야 했습니다.

(Laughter)

to wake up in the morning,

장관이 아침에 일어나서

take his heartburn medication

속쓰림 약을 먹고

and then tell you the plans he has for your generation

앞으로의 20년에 대해 젊은 세대를 위해 갖고 있는 계획을

in 20 years time.

말해줄 때까지요.

Before now, if you wanted to be heard by your possibly tyrannical government,

예전에는 압제적인 정부에 내 말을 들려주고 싶으면

you were pushed to protest, suffer the consequences

시위에 나가서 그에 따른 결과에 고통받고

and have your fingers crossed

어떤 서양의 신문회사가

that some Western paper somewhere might make someone care.

글을 실어주기를 바래야 했습니다.

But now we have opportunities to back each other up

하지만 이제 우리는 전에 없던 방식으로 서로를

in ways we never could before.

지지해 줄 수 있는 기회가 있습니다.

We support South African students

고등전문학교의 터무니없이 비싼

who are marching against ridiculously high tertiary fees.

수업료에 반대하며 시위하는 남아공 학생들을 우리는 지지합니다.

We support Zimbabwean women who are marching to parliament.

국회로 거리행진하는 짐바브웨 여성들을 우리는 지지합니다.

We support Angolan journalists who are being illegally detained.

불법감금당한 앙골라 기자들을 우리는 지지합니다.

For the first time ever,

생전 처음으로

African pain and African aspiration

아프리카인의 고통와 염원을

has the ability to be witnessed

그것에 가장 공감하는 사람들인

by those who can empathize with it the most:

다른 아프리카인이 목격할 수 있습니다.

other Africans.

I believe that with a social Pan-Africanist thinking

사회적 범아프리카주의의 사고와

and using the Internet as a tool,

인터넷을 도구로 활용함으로써

we can begin to rescue each other,

우리가 서로를 구할 수 있고

and ultimately, to rescue ourselves.

궁극적으로는 스스로를 구할 수 있다고 생각합니다.
