There are three words that explain why I am here.

तीन शब्द हैं जो बताते है मै यहाँ क्यों हूँ।

They are "Amy Krouse Rosenthal."

वो हैं "एमी क्राउस रोज़न्तॉल"।

At the end of Amy's life,

एमी के अंत में,

hyped up on morphine and home in hospice,

जो कि मॉर्फ़ीन अौर हॉस्पिस

देखरेख में बीते,

the "New York Times" published an article she wrote

"न्यूयॉर्क टाइम्स" ने एमी का एक अनुच्छेद प्रकाशित किया

for the "Modern Love" column on March 3, 2017.

जो उसने "मॉर्ङन लव" पत्रभाग के लिए, मार्च 03, 2017 में लिखा था।

It was read worldwide by over five million people.

ये दुनिया-भर में 50 लाख लोगो द्वारा पढ़ा गया।

The piece was unbearably sad,

अनुच्छेद असहनीय उदासीन,

ironically funny

and brutally honest.

While it was certainly about our life together,

निश्चित ही यह हमारे साथ जीवन के बारे में था,

the focus of the piece was me.

It was called, "You May Want to Marry My Husband."

इसका शीर्षक था "आप मेरे पति से शादी करना चाह सकते हैं"।

It was a creative play on a personal ad for me.

यह मेरे लिए एक रचनात्मक निजी विज्ञापन था ।

Amy quite literally left an empty space for me to fill

एमी, सचमुच में, मेरे भरने के लिए एक खाली जगह छोड़ गयी

with another love story.

एक दूसरी प्रेम कहानी से।

Amy was my wife for half my life.

एमी मेरे आधे जीवन के लिए मेरी पत्नी रहीं।

She was my partner in raising three wonderful, now grown children,

वे 3 बेहतरीन ,अब बड़े, बच्चो का पालन-पोषण करने में मेरी साथी थीं,

and really, she was my girl, you know?

वे सच मे, मेरी थी। आप जानते हैं,

We had so much in common.

हम मे, बहुत-कुछ समान था।

We loved the same art,

the same documentaries, the same music.

Music was a huge part of our life together.

And we shared the same values.

We were in love,

हम प्यार मे थे,

and our love grew stronger up until her last day.

Amy was a prolific author.

एमी एक शानदार लेखक थी।

In addition to two groundbreaking memoirs,

दो अभूतपूर्व संस्मरण के अलावा,

she published over 30 children's books.

उसने 30 बच्चों की पुस्तकें प्रकाषित करीं।

Posthumously, the book she wrote with our daughter Paris,

She was a self-described tiny filmmaker.

She was 5'1" and her films were not that long.

Her films exemplified her natural ability to gather people together.

उसकी फिल्में लोगों को इकट्ठा करने की उसकी प्राकृतिक क्षमता का उदाहरण देती थी ।

She was also a terrific public speaker,

talking with children and adults of all ages

all over the world.

Now, my story of grief is only unique in the sense of it being rather public.

However, the grieving process itself was not my story alone.

Amy gave me permission to move forward, and I'm so grateful for that.

Now, just a little over a year into my new life,

I've learned a few things.

I'm here to share with you part of the process of moving forward

through and with grief.

But before I do that, I think it would be important

to talk a little bit about the end of life,

because it forms how I have been emotionally since then.

Death is such a taboo subject, right?

Amy ate her last meal on January 9, 2017.

She somehow lived an additional two months

without solid food.

Her doctors told us we could do hospice at home

or in the hospital.

They did not tell us that Amy would shrink to half her body weight,

that she would never lay with her husband again,

and that walking upstairs to our bedroom would soon feel like running a marathon.

Home hospice does have an aura of being a beautiful environment to die in.

घर मे शुश्रुषा करना मरने के लिए एक सुन्दर वातावरण होता है ।

How great that you don't have the sounds of machines beeping

कितना बढ़िया, कि आपके पास मशीनों की बीप की आवाज़ नही होगी

and going on and off all the time,

जो कि हर समय चलती रहती है,

no disruptions for mandatory drug administration,

अनिवार्य दवा प्रशासन

में कोई व्यवधान नहीं

home with your family to die.

घर, अपने परिवार के साथ, मरने के लिए।

We did our best to make those weeks as meaningful as we could.

हमने अपनी पूरी कोशिश की उन हफ्तों को सबसे सार्थक बनाने के लिए।

We talked often about death.

हमने अक्सर मृत्यु के बारे मे बात की।

Everybody knows it's going to happen to them, like, for sure,

but being able to talk openly about it was liberating.

We talked about subjects like parenting.

I asked Amy how I could be the best parent possible to our children in her absence.

In those conversations, she gave me confidence

उन बातचीतो मे,उसने मुझे आत्मविश्वास दिया

by stressing what a great relationship I had with each one of them,

and that I can do it.

आैर मै ये कर सकता हूँ।

I know there will be many times

मै जानता हूँ एेसा कई बार होगा

where I wish she and I can make decisions together.

जब मै चाहूंगा वाे आैर मै एक साथ निर्णय लें।

We were always so in sync.

हम हमेशा बहुत ताल-मेल में थे।

May I be so audacious as to suggest

क्या मैं सुझाव दे सकता हूं

that you have these conversations now,

कि आप ये बातचीत अभी करें,

when healthy.

जब आप स्वस्थ हैं।

Please don't wait.

As part of our hospice experience, we organized groups of visitors.

हमारे धर्मशाला अनुभव के हिस्से के रूप में हमने आगंतुकों के समूहों का आयोजन किया।

How brave of Amy to receive them, even as she began her physical decline.

We had a Krouse night,

her parents and three siblings.

Each told beautiful stories of Amy and of us.

Amy made an immense impact on her loyal friends.

But home hospice is not so beautiful for the surviving family members.

लेकिन घर मे हॉस्पिस परिवार के बाकी लोगो के लिए सुंदर नही होता।

I want to get a little personal here and tell you that to this date,

मै यहाँ थोड़ा निजी होना चाहता हूँ आैर बताना चाहता हूँ कि आज तक,

I have memories of those final weeks that haunt me.

मेरे पास उन अंतिम हफ्तों की यादें है जो मुझे परेशान करती है।

I remember walking backwards to the bathroom,

मुझे याद है बाथरूम की तरफ पीछे चलना,

assisting Amy with each step.

हर-एक कदम पर एमी की मदद करना।

I felt so strong.

मै शक्तिशाली महसूस कर रहा था।

I'm not such a big guy,

मै इतना बड़ा आदमी नहीं हूँ

but my arms looked and felt so healthy compared to Amy's frail body.

लेकिन मेरी बांह एमी की नाज़ुक देह से बहुत मज़बूत दिख अौर महसूस हो रही थी।

And that body failed in our house.

और वह देह हमारे घर में विफल हुई।

On March 13 of last year,

पिछले साल 13 मार्च को,

my wife died of ovarian cancer in our bed.

मेरी पत्नी हमारे बिस्तर पर डिम्बग्रंथि के कैंसर से मर गई।

I carried her lifeless body

मैं उसका निर्जीव शरीर ले गया

down our stairs,

सीढ़ियों से नीचे,

through our dining room

हमारे भोजन कक्ष से

and our living room

आैर हमारी बैठक से

to a waiting gurney

प्रतीक्षा करते स्ट्रेचर तक

to have her body cremated.

उसके अंतिम संस्कार के लिए।

I will never get that image out of my head.

मै उस छवि को अपने सिर से कभी बाहर कर पाऊगा।

If you know someone who has been through the hospice experience,

अगर आप किसी ऐसे व्यक्ति को जानते हैं जो ऐसे अनुभव से गुज़रा है,

acknowledge that.

उससे सहानुभूति रखें।

Just say you heard this guy Jason

बस कहना कि आपने इस आदमी जेसन को सुना है

talk about how tough it must be to have those memories

कि यह कितना कठिन होगा उन यादों को रखना

and that you're there if they ever want to talk about it.

और तुम वहाँ हो अगर वे कभी इसके बारे में बात करना चाहते हैं।

They may not want to talk,

but it's nice to connect with someone living each day with those lasting images.

लेकिन किसी के साथ जुड़ना अच्छा लगता है हर दिन उन स्थायी छवियों के रहने के साथ।

I know this sounds unbelievable, but I've never been asked that question.

मुझे पता है यह अविश्वसनीय लगता है, लेकिन मुझसे वो सवाल कभी नहीं पूछा गया ।

Amy's essay caused me to experience grief in a public way.

एमी के निबंध ने मुझे सार्वजनिक तरीके से दुःख का अनुभव कराया।

Many of the readers who reached out to me wrote beautiful words of reflection.

मेरे पास पहुंचने वाले कई पाठको ने चिंतन के सुंदर शब्द लिखे।

The scope of Amy's impact was deeper and richer

एमी के प्रभाव का दायरा गहरा और धनी था

than even us and her family knew.

इतना कि दोस्त आैर परिवार को भी नही पता था।

Some of the responses I received helped me with the intense grieving process

मुझे प्राप्त कुछ प्रतिक्रियाओं ने तीव्र शोक प्रक्रिया मे मेरी मदद करी।

because of their humor,

उनके हास्य की वजह से,

like this email I received from a woman reader

जैसे कि यह ईमेल जो मुझे एक महिला पाठक से मिले,

who read the article, declaring,

जिसने लेख पढ़ा, घोषित किया

"I will marry you when you are ready --

"जब आप तैयार हों तो मैं आपसे शादी करूंगी--

(Laughter)

"provided you permanently stop drinking.

"बशर्ते आप स्थायी रूप से पीना से छोड़े।

No other conditions.

कोई अन्य शर्तें नहीं।

I promise to outlive you.

मै वादा करती हूँ आपसे

ज्यादा जीने का।

Thank you very much."

Now, I do like a good tequila, but that really is not my issue.

अब, मुझे एक अच्छी टकीला पसंद है, लेकिन यह वास्तव में मेरा मुद्दा नहीं है।

Yet how could I say no to that proposal?

I laughed through the tears when I read this note from a family friend:

"I remember Shabbat dinners at your home

and Amy teaching me how to make cornbread croutons.

Only Amy could find creativity in croutons."

केवल एमी क्रूटॉन मे रचनात्मकता ढूंढ सकती है।

(Laughter)

On July 27, just a few months after Amy's death,

27 जुलाई को, एमी की मौत के कुछ महीनो बाद,

my dad died of complications

मेरे पिता जटिलताओं से मर गए

related to a decades-long battle with Parkinson's disease.

पार्किंसंस रोग की, जो एक दशक से चल रही थी।

I had to wonder: How much can the human condition handle?

मुझे आश्चर्य करना पड़ा: मानव हालातों को कितना संभाल सकता है?

What makes us capable of dealing with this intense loss

and yet carry on?

Was this a test?

Why my family and my amazing children?

Looking for answers, I regret to say, is a lifelong mission,

but the key to my being able to persevere

is Amy's expressed and very public edict

Throughout this year, I have done just that.

I really am sad a lot of the time.

I often feel like I'm kind of a mess,

In Japanese Zen, there is a term "Shoji,"

There is no separation between life and death

other than a thin line that connects the two.

Birth, or the joyous, wonderful, vital parts of life,

and death, those things we want to get rid of,

are said to be faced equally.

In this new life that I find myself in,

I am doing my best to embrace this concept as I move forward with grieving.

In the early months following Amy's death, though,

I was sure that the feeling of despair would be ever-present,

that it would be all-consuming.

Soon I was fortunate to receive some promising advice.

One friend in particular who had also lost her life partner kept repeating,

I didn't even know what she was talking about.

How was that possible?

But because Amy gave me very public permission

to also find happiness,

I now have experienced joy from time to time.

From observing that my deck had sun beating down on it on a cold day,

stepping out in it, laying there,

इसमे बाहर कदम रखना,लेटना

the warmth consuming my body.

गरमाहट मेरे शरीर मे जाती हुई महसूस करना।

The joy comes from my three stunning children.

खुशी मुझे मेरे 3 लाजवाब बच्चो से मिलती है।

There was my son Justin,

मेरा बेटा जस्टिन,

texting me a picture of himself with an older gentleman

मुझे अपनी फोटो एक उम्र मे बड़े सज्जन के साथ भेजता है

with a massive, strong forearm and the caption, "I just met Popeye,"

जिसकी भारी ,मज़बूत बाँह थी आैर अनुशीर्षक था, "मै अभी पोपाय से मिला,"

with a huge grin on his face.

चेहरे पर एक विशाल मुस्कराहट के साथ।

(Laughter)

(हँसी)

There was his brother Miles, walking to the train

उसका भाई माइल्स, ट्रेन की तरफ जाते हुए

for his first day of work after graduating college,

नौकरी के पहले दिन, कॉलेज से ग्रेजुएट होने के बाद,

who stopped and looked back at me and asked,

रुकता है आैर मेरी तरफ देख के पूछता है,

"What am I forgetting?"

"मै क्या भूल रहा हूँ?"

I assured him right away, "You are 100 percent ready. You got this."

मैंने उसे तुरंत आश्वासन दिया, " तुम 100 प्रतिशत तैयार हो।"

And my daughter Paris,

और मेरी बेटी पेरिस,

walking together through Battersea Park in London,

साथ - साथ चलते हुए लंदन में बैटरसी पार्क से,

the leaves piled high,

the sun glistening in the early morning on our way to yoga.

I would add that beauty is also there to discover,

and I mean beauty of the wabi-sabi variety

सुंदरता से मेरा मतलब दोषयुक्त भी,

but beauty nonetheless.

लेकिन फिर भी सुंदर।

On the one hand, when I see something in this category, I want to say,

"Amy, did you see that? Did you hear that?

It's too beautiful for you not to share with me."

On the other hand,

There is beauty in the simple moments that life has to offer,

a way of seeing that world that was so much a part of Amy's DNA,

like on my morning commute,

I have the most amazing family that loves and supports me.
