What is up with us white people?

I've been thinking about that a lot the last few years,

and I know I have company.

people of color have been asking that question for centuries.

But I think a growing number of white folks are too,

I was raised to be that sort of person.

I was a little kid in the '60s and '70s,

Now, I would say, I'm still in recovery from that early impression.

I got into journalism

in part because I cared about things like equality and justice.

For a long time, racism was just such a puzzle to me.

Maybe I was puzzled because I wasn't yet looking in the right place

Have you noticed

that when people in our mostly white media

report on what they consider to be racial issues,

what that usually means is that we're pointing our cameras

the rise of Donald Trump

and the discovery that a solid majority of white Americans

would embrace or at least accept

such a raw, bitter kind of white identity politics.

This was all disturbing to me as a human being.

As a journalist, I found myself turning the lens around,

"And oh, by the way -- this could get uncomfortable."

I had seen almost no journalism that looked deeply at whiteness,

but, of course, people of color and especially Black intellectuals

One of the first questions I asked was,

Science is clear.

We're all related,

Some people walked out of Africa into colder, darker places

and lost a lot of their melanin,

some of us more than others.

But genetically, we are all 99.9 percent the same.

There's more genetic diversity within what we call racial groups

There's no gene for whiteness or blackness or Asian-ness

or what have you.

So how did this happen?

How did we get this thing?

How did racism start?

I think if you had asked me to speculate on that,

in my ignorance, some years ago,

I probably would have said,

and they found each other strange.

I guess I'll just go ahead and jump to the conclusion

that since you're different

that you're somehow less than me,

and maybe that makes it OK for me to mistreat you.'"

Right?

Is that something like what we imagine or assume?

And under that kind of scenario,

it's all a big, tragic misunderstanding.

But it seems that's wrong.

First of all, race is a recent invention.

It's just a few hundred years old.

Before that, yes, people divided themselves

by religion, tribal group, language,

things like that.

But for most of human history,

people had no notion of race.

In Ancient Greece, for example --

the Greeks thought they were better than the other people they knew about,

They just thought that they'd developed the most advanced culture.

So they looked around at the Ethiopians,

but also the Persians and the Celts,

and they said, "They're all kind of barbaric compared to us.

Culturally, they're just not Greek."

And yes, in the ancient world, there was lots of slavery,

but people enslaved people who didn't look like them,

and they often enslaved people who did.

Did you know that the English word "slave" is derived from the word "Slav"?

Because Slavic people were enslaved by all kinds of folks,

I put that question to another leading historian,

I didn't expect he would answer the question

in the form of one person's name and a date,

as if we were talking about the light bulb.

But he did.

He said, in his exhaustive research,

he found what he believed to be the first articulation of racist ideas.

And he named the culprit.

This guy should be more famous,

His name is Gomes de Zurara.

Portuguese man.

Wrote a book in the 1450s

in which he did something that no one had ever done before,

according to Dr. Kendi.

He lumped together all the people of Africa --

a vast, diverse continent --

and he described them as a distinct group,

Never mind that in that precolonial time

some of the most sophisticated cultures in the world were in Africa.

Why would this guy make this claim?

Turns out, it helps to follow the money.

First of all, Zurara was hired to write that book

by the Portuguese king,

slave traders --

slave traders tied to the Portuguese crown

Zurara invented both blackness and whiteness,

because he basically created the notion of blackness

through this description of Africans,

and as Dr. Kendi says,

Other European countries followed the Portuguese lead

in looking to Africa for human property and free labor

and in adopting this fiction

بەکارهێنانی ئەم درۆیە

about the inferiority of African people.

کە گوایە خەڵکی ئەفریقا کەمترن.

I found this clarifying.

ئەمە ڕوونکردنەوەیەکی باشبوو بەلامەوە.

Racism didn't start with a misunderstanding,

ڕەگەزپەرستی بە هەڵەتێگەشتن دەستیپێنەکرد،

it started with a lie.

بە درۆیەک دەستیپێکرد.

Meanwhile, over here in colonial America,

لەهەمان کاتدا، لێرە لە ئەمریکای سەردەمی داگیرکاریدا،

the people now calling themselves white got busy taking these racist ideas

خەڵکەکەی ئێستا بەخۆیان ئەڵێن سپی سەرقاڵی وەرگرتنی ئەم بیرۆکە ڕەگەزپەرستانە بوون و

and turning them into law,

ئەیانکردن بە یاسا،

laws that stripped all human rights from the people they were calling Black

and locking them into our particularly vicious brand of chattel slavery,

هەموویانی ئەبەستەوە بەم جۆرە کۆیلایەتییە تایبەتەی کۆیلایەتی موڵکداری خۆمان، و

and laws that gave even the poorest white people benefits,

یاساکانی تەنانەت سوودی هەبوو بۆ هەژارترین سپی پێستەکانیش،

not big benefits in material terms

but the right to not be enslaved for life,

the right to not have your loved ones torn from your arms and sold,

and sometimes real goodies.

The handouts of free land in places like Virginia

پاداشتی بەخشینی زەوی بێبەرامبەر لە شوێنەکانی وەک ڤێرجینیا

to white people only

بۆ تەنیا خەڵکی سپی پێست

started long before the American Revolution

ماوەیەکی زۆر پێش شۆڕشی ئەمریکی دەستیپێکرد و

and continued long after.

ماوەیەکی زۆر دوای ئەوەش بەردەوام بوو.

Now, I can imagine

ئێستا، ئەتوانم بیهێنمە بەرچاوم

there would be people listening to me -- if they're still listening --

خەڵکێکی زۆر ئەبێت گوێملێگرن -- ئەگەر هێشتا گوێبگرن --

who might be thinking,

کە لەوانەیە بیربکەنەوە،

"Come on, this is all ancient history. Why does this matter?

"وازبێنە، ئەمە هەمووی مێژووی کۆنە. چی گرنگییەکی هەیە؟

Things have changed.

هەموو شتێک گۆڕاوە.

Can't we just get over it and move on?"

ناتوانین ئیتر واز لەو شتانە بێنین؟"

Right?

وانییە؟

But I would argue, for me certainly,

بەڵام من واناڵێم، بەدڵنیاییەوە بۆ من،

learning this history has brought a real shift

فێربوونی ئەم مێژووە گۆڕانکارییەکی ڕاستەقینەی هێناوە

in the way that I understand racism today.

لە شێوەی تێگەشتنم بۆ ڕەگەزپەرستی ئەمڕۆ.

To review, two quick takeaways from what I've said so far:

بۆ ئەوەی پیاچوونەوە بکەین، بۆ دوو وانەی ئەو شتانەی تا ئێستا وتوومە:

one, race is not a thing biologically,

یەکەم، ڕەچەڵەک بابەتێکی زیندەوەرزانی نییە،

it's a story some people decided to tell;

چیرۆکێکە هەندێک کەس بڕیاریانداوە بیگێڕنەوە؛ و

and two, people told that story

دووەم خەڵک ئەو چیرۆکەیان گێڕاوەتەوە

to justify the brutal exploitation of other human beings for profit.

هەتا ڕەوایی بدەن بە بەکارهێنانی مرۆڤەکانی تر بۆ قازانجی خۆیان.

I didn't learn those two facts in school.

ئەو دوو ڕاستییە لە قوتابخانە فێرنەبووم.

I suspect most of us didn't.

پێموابێت زۆربەمان فێرنەکراوین.

If you did, you had a special teacher.

ئەگەر فێربووبێتی، کەواتە مامۆستایەکی تایبەتت هەبووە.

Right?

وانییە؟

But once they sink in,

بەڵام هەر کە تێیئەگەیت،

for one thing, it becomes clear

یەک شت هەیە ڕوونئەبێتەوە

that racism is not mainly a problem of attitudes,

ئەویش کە ڕەگەزپەرستی بەشێوەیەکی سەرەکی کێشەی هەڵوێستەکان نییە،

of individual bigotry.

مێشک تەسکی کەسی.

No, it's a tool.

نەخێر، ڕەگەزپەرستی ئامرازێکە.

It's a tool to divide us and to prop up systems --

ئامرازێکە بۆ دابەشکردنمان و درووستکردنی سیستمەکان --

economic, political and social systems

سیستمە ئابووری، سیاسی و کۆمەڵایەتییەکانی

that advantage some people and disadvantage others.

سوود بە هەندێک ئەگەیەنێت و زیانیش بە هەندێک ئەگەیەنێت.

And it's a tool to convince a lot of white folks

ئامرازێکیشە بۆ قایلکردنی زۆرێک لە سپی پێستەکان

who may or may not be getting a great deal out of our highly stratified society

کە لەوانەیە بایەخێکی ئەوتۆیان نەبێت لە کۆمەڵگا ئاڵۆزەکانماندا و

to support the status quo.

بۆ بەرزکردنەوەی پێگەی خۆیان.

"Could be worse. At least I'm white."

ئەڵێت، "ئەکرا خراپتربێت، هیچ نەبێ سپی پێستم."

Once I grasped the origins of racism,

هەر کە لە بنەڕەتی ڕەگەزپەرستی تێگەشتم،

I stopped being mystified by the fact that it's still with us.

چیتر سەرسام نەبووم بەو ڕاستیەی کە هێشتا لەناومانا ماوە.

I guess, you know, looking back,

پێموابێت ئەزانن، بە تێڕوانین بۆ ڕابردوو،

I thought about racism as being sort of like the flat Earth --

وامئەزانی مەسەلەی ڕەگەزپەرستی بەجۆرێک وەک مەسەلەی زەوی تەختە --

just bad, outdated thinking that would fade away on its own

تەنیا بیرکردنەوەیەکی کۆنی خراپ کە بۆخۆی بوونی نامێنێت

before long.

دوای ماوەیەک.

But no, this tool of whiteness

بەڵام نەخێر، ئەم ئامرازی سپی پێستییە

is still doing the job it was invented to do.

هێشتا ئەو کارە ئەکات کە بۆی درووست بووە.

Powerful people go to work every day,

هەموو ڕۆژێک خەڵکی بەهێز ئەچن بۆسەر کارەکانیان،

leveraging and reinforcing this old weapon

ئەم چەکە کۆنە بەهێزئەکەنەوە

in the halls of power,

لە هۆڵەکانی دەسەڵات،

in some broadcast studios we could mention ...

لە هەندێک ستۆدیۆی پەخش کە ئەتوانین ناویان بێنین ... و

And we don't need to fuss over

پێویستیش ناکات باسی ئەوە بکەین

whether these people believe what they're saying,

کە ئایا ئەم خەڵکانە باوەڕیان هەیە بەو شتانەی ئەیڵێن،

whether they're really racist.

کە ئایا بەڕاستی خۆشیان ڕەگەزپەرستن.

That's not what it's about.

دەربارەی ئەوە نییە.

It's about pocketbooks and power.

دەربارەی جانتای دەست و دەسەڵاتە.

Finally, I think the biggest lesson of all --

لە کۆتاییشدا، پێموابێت گرنگترین وانە ئەوەیە -- و

and let me talk in particular to the white folks for a minute:

با کەمێک بەدیاریکراوی قسە لەگەڵ سپی پێستەکان بکەم:

once we understand that people who look like us

هەر کە تێگەشتین لەوەی ئەو کەسانەی کە لە ئێمە ئەچن

invented the very notion of race

بابەتی ڕەچەڵەکیان داهێناوە

in order to advantage themselves and us,

بۆ ئەوەی سوود بەخۆیان و بە ئێمەش بگەیەنن،

isn't it easier to see that it's our problem to solve?

ئاسانتر نابێت درک بکەین بەوەی کێشەی ئێمەیە و ئەبێ چارەسەری بکەین؟

It's a white people problem.

کێشەی خەڵکی سپی پێستە.

I'm embarrassed to say that for a long time,

ماوەیەکی زۆرە شەرم ئەکەم لە وتنی ئەو قسەیە،

I thought of racism as being mainly a struggle for people of color to fight,

وا سەیری ڕەگەزپەرستیم ئەکرد زیاتر پەلەقاژێی خەڵکی ڕەنگەکانی تر بێت بۆ شەڕکردن،

sort of like the people on the TV screen when I was a kid.

هاوشێوەی ئەو کەسانەی ئەهاتنە سەر تەلەفزیۆن ئەوکاتەی مناڵ بووم.

Or, as if I was on the sidelines at a sports contest,

یان تەماشاکەرێکی دووربم لە پێشبڕکێیەکی وەرزشی،

on one side people of color,

لەلایەک خەڵکی ڕەنگەکانی تر،

on the other those real racists,

لەلایەکی تریش ڕەگەزپەرستە ڕاستەقینەکان،

the Southern sheriff,

سەرۆک پۆلیسەکانی باشووری ئەمریکا،

the people in hoods.

خەڵکە عەبابەسەرەکان.

And I was sincerely rooting for people of color to win the struggle.

لە دڵیشەوە هاوارم ئەکرد بۆ بردنەوەی خەڵکی ڕەنگەکانی تر.

But no.

بەڵام نەخێر.

There are no sidelines.

هیچ شوێنێک نییە بۆ تەماشاکردن.

We're all in it.

هەموومانی تیاین.

We are implicated.

هەموو بەشدارین لە تاوانەکە. و

And if I'm not joining the struggle to dismantle a system

ئەگەر بەشدار نابم لە هەوڵەکان بۆ نەهێشتنی سیستمەکەی

that advantages me,

کە سوود بەخۆم ئەگەیەنێت،

I am complicit.

منیش بەشدارم.

This isn't about shame or guilt.

ئەمە دەربارەی شەرمکردن یان هەستکردن بە تاوان نییە.

White guilt doesn't get anything done,

هەستکردن بە تاوان لەوەی سپی پێستی هیچ شتێک بەجێناهێنێت، و

and honestly, I don't feel a lot of guilt.

هەر بەڕاستی، هەست بە تاوانێکی زۆر ناکەم.

History isn't my fault or yours.

مێژوو تاوانی من یان ئێوە نییە.

What I do feel is a stronger sense of responsibility

ئەوەی هەستی پێئەکەم هەستکردنێکی بەهێزترە بۆ بەرپرسیارێتی

to do something.

هەتا شتێک بکەین.

All this has altered the way that I think about and approach my work

هەموو ئەمە گۆڕانکاری هێناوە بەسەر شێوەی بیرکردنەوەم و نزیکبوونەوە لە کارەکەم

as a documentary storyteller

وەک چیرۆکخوانێکی دیکۆمێنتاری و

and as a teacher.

وەک مامۆستایەک.

But beyond that, besides that, what does it mean?

بەڵام لەسەروو ئەوەوە، لەپاڵ ئەوە، واتای چی ئەگەیەنێت؟

What does it mean for any of us?

واتای چی ئەگەیەنێت بۆ هەموومان؟

Does it mean that we support leaders

واتای ئەوەیە پشتیوانی سەرکردەکان ئەکەین

who want to push ahead with a conversation about reparations?

کە ئەیانەوێت دەست بە گفتوگۆکان بکرێت دەربارەی چاکسازییەکان؟

In our communities,

لە کۆمەڵگاکانماندا،

are we finding people who are working to transform unjust institutions

ئەو کەسانە ئەدۆزینەوە کە کار ئەکەن بۆ گۆڕینی ئەو دامەزراوە ناڕەوایانە و

and supporting that work?

پشتیوانی ئەو کارە ئەکەن؟

At my job,

لە شوێنی کارەکەم،

am I the white person who shows up grudgingly

ئەو کەسە سپی پێستەم کە بە ڕق لە دڵییەوە دەرئەکەوم

for the diversity and equity meeting,

بۆ کۆبوونەوەی هەمەچەشنی و یەکسانی،

or am I trying to figure out how to be a real accomplice

یان هەوڵئەیەم ڕێگایەک بدۆزمەوە هاوکارێکی ڕاستەقینە بم

to my colleagues of color?

بۆ هاوپیشەکانم لە ڕەنگەکانی تر؟

Seems to me wherever we show up,

لەوە ئەچێت واباشتر بێت بۆ هەر کوێیەک چووین،

we need to show up with humility and vulnerability

پێویستە بە سادەیی و هەناسەساردییەوە خۆمان دەرخەین و

and a willingness to put down this power that we did not earn.

ئامادەش بین بۆ دانانی ئەم هێزەی کە بەدەستی خۆمان پەیامان نەکردووە.

I believe we also stand to benefit

باوەڕیشم وایە سوودمان پێئەگات

if we could create a society

ئەگەر کۆمەڵگایەک درووست بکەین

that's not built on the exploitation or oppression of anyone.

کە بنیات نەنرابێت لەسەر بەکارهێنان یان سەرکووتکردنی هیچ کەسێک.

But in the end we should do this,

بەڵام لە کۆتاییدا پێویستە ئەمە بکەین،

we should show up,

پێویستە دەرکەوین،

figure out how to take action.

بزانین چی باشە بیکەین.

Because it's right.

چونکە ئەوە کارە ڕاستەکەیە.
